@desertreak, and @silverwilddesign 2023
For various reasons mortality influenced a lot of the work I made in 2023, at times I planned shoots unrelated to just to give myself a break. But everything was leading up to this shoot. The concept of what gets left behind on earth was very present in my mind. I think the first element I knew I needed was the cholla skeleton, then I thought how interesting it would be to pair that with seashells from the Salish Sea, the tulle was a textural choice that was rooted in funeral veils. But those are just objects, @desertfreak and @silverwilddesign were the final piece to this project, they were more than what you see in the images, they were true collaborators helping build this entire concept.

Two photos I took during winter of '21. I love the magical light and the texture in these. Shot on Tmax 100 35mm film.

Snow story {digging through the archive}
Digging through the archive, film I've developed, scanned and left waiting. It was one of the drives through the countryside my father and I take every December. Here, a spring water pool in a middle of a village. December 2011.
Taken with borrowed Fujica G690BL medium format 6×9 film camera, its EBC Fujinon S 100mm F3.5 lens, on Kodak T-Max 100 Professional film. Developed in Kodak Xtol, 1+1 dilution. Scanned with Canon CanoScan 8800F flatbed scanned, using VueScan.

No. 11 Veronica 2024
I’ve always rejected the thought of having a style, I know some who really fret about not having one but for me I’ve always just done what interests me most and then do it the best way I know how. Maybe I do have a style, if so then it is inherent and unintentional. With all that having been said, for nearly 7 years I suppose if I’m known for anything it’s possibly as the photographer with the disco ball. Honestly I had no idea when I bought this thing in the winter of 2018 that I would still be shooting with it or that I’d have used it as often as I do. Veronica reached out to my this summer about shoot my Disco in the desert series which I have affectionately branded Valley Fever. Aside from the first hour of this shoot, in which I took us up the road in the wrong direction only to walk back down the same road to where we started, now hotter, sweatier, and already a little exhausted. After this however we turned Tanque Verde into our own Studio 54. This all turned out better than my wildest expectations. Veronica absolutely embodied this project and it shows, but I’m most grateful for her patience with me hiking back out of the canyon when I had to stop and sit multiple times, and for the extra water she had in her car after mine had been fully depleted.

Emily @sunflower-spirit at a park south of Ypsilanti, MI in early spring 2021. Photographed with Kodak Tmax100 35mm film. She looks so witchy particularly with the ancient knotted tree in the other picture!

Here is a crop to show how much detail 35mm Tmax 100 film has. I scan at over 5000dpi to achieve 36 megapixels of digital resolution, just slightly overshooting the film's approximate 34 megapixels of fully analog granular detail.
