Legend Two: Cicada Theory
Hiya chooms! This Chapter is also available on AO3 now! HERE!
All I wanna say is that I highly recommend you listen to this song while reading! It really has the vibe and soundscape I was going for for this story! The song is titled "A quick one before the eternal worm devours Appalachia" ------------🚹💖--------------- The fiery dry summers of Night City are always deadly for those that can not afford to stay cool. Around this time of year, Shizuo had always seen blow flies swarming the mummified dried corpse of some poor soul with only a box for a home and a garbage bag for a blanket, or children crying as their chrome nearly cooked the ends where metal meets flesh. How the hell can the bugs survive this heat? No matter how the heat escalates every year, he hears the humming of the cicadas. Agonizingly loud, as if they’re screaming from being cooked alive in their own shells.
Sitting at the monorail stop, sweat pools on the cyborg’s brow. His breath heavy as he bounces his leg in his seat. What skin he has left under his trench coat suffers as the heat from his cybernetics distorts the air with a constant rising wave that only adds to the burn of the afternoon sun. The vents hum as intricate parts inside his mechanisms consume solar energy, pumping his heart alive and filling his lungs with air. The process is silent to most passing by, but in the canals of Shizuo’s ear, the vibrations are a constant humbuzz; reminiscent of the fluorescent hum of a corpo office, however not as temperature controlled.
“Hot as fuckin’ hell..” He mumbles under his breath, teeth grinding the cigarette between them. A cicada on the torrid metal awning above him screams as a baby cries in its mother’s arms. The advertisements are blaring, almost fading into one another with not a moment of silence to process them. Even the breeze from the wind is hot and dry, no escape from the other irritants overwhelming Shizuo’s senses.
His leg bounces faster. The clicking of the joints makes noise. The creak of the bench as he begins to gently rock; trying anything to find solace from the building irritation, but falling short. Finding a grip on the bench beside him, the cyborg’s hand crushes the metal like dough in his fist. Before he can lift it from its bolts, the monorail finally arrives. An oasis in the desert of noise, come to take him home.
It’s honestly not much quieter there. White noise pours from his only fan in the sweltering night. It only circulates the heat as Shizuo lies sprawled over the mattress in his studio apartment. Cicadas on his window panels rattle and scream as they molt their carapace, emerging soft and pliable. He stares at the carcases through the skylight as exhaustion begins to take him, only for his eyes to peel open once again hearing the humming from his insides; ever present and inescapable. The only thing left is to curl into himself and pray for sleep to cut through the constant whirr. It always does eventually, giving way to visions of the subconscious.
_+-=_
The cicadas whirred on light poles on a hot and dry summer day. Shizuo and his younger brother Kasuka found themselves playing in some junk yard after wandering a bit too far into Pacifica. Kasuka kicked the ball just a little too far around the corner of a heap of tires, and the large metal feet of a cyberpsycho halted the ball in it’s tracks and crushed it flat. A multitude of shining red eyes froze Kasuka in place as Shizuo turned the corner just in time for the barrels of a gatling gun to rise to his brother’s head. In the flap of a cicada’s wing, their lives changed. A push to save a life. A hail of bullets, tearing white hot through flesh, soldering it on contact. An arm displaced, blood spattering the dusty blacktop.
Kasuka watched it all as his brother’s body was blown away, though all he could hear were the screams of cicadas.
Shizuo only saw the world in blurry flashes, felt the tubes and wires in his neck as he briefly awoke in the hospital feeling nothing from the shoulders down. When he came back to consciousness, horror overtook him as he saw his body in the mirror. Sleek black and gray steel and carbon fiber replaced all flesh and most of his bone from the bust down. A body he didn’t ask for, that he was forced to have. He would have rather died protecting Kasuka, but he was forced to live. Forced to shed his human skin for a walking life support system.
_+-=_
It’s another hot morning in Night City as Ziggy Q’s voice greets all its residents through the radio. It jars Shizuo awake in the very same position he fell asleep, sweat soaking his pillow. A cold shower and a cigarette is all he needs before going out for a walk to his fixer for work.
Running low on cash again, guess I’ll get Tom on the hollo.. As he walks and negotiates on the phone, he passes a sun dried corpse and takes a glance. He sees every individual he passes clearly in the crowd, flesh mixing with multi-colored metal, style over substance. They were flesh once, born like he was, and changed. Shedding skin to replace with chrome.
Everyone sheds their flesh in Night City, molting like cicadas.

Synchronicity
Aviva froze in her tracks. Of all the things she had expected to see nestled among the newly constructed buildings and stalls covering the labyrinth of boardwalks that was Crescent Lake, this particular tent had not been one of them. She was so convinced she’d hallucinated that she actually rubbed her eyes and looked again. It had been an excruciatingly exhausting few days and it would not have surprised her to discover her mind playing tricks. Yet there it stood, sun-faded and drab, blessedly familiar amongst the strangeness. She set off toward it, her pace increasing with each step; by the time she threw open the tent flap, she was nearly at a run.
“Mae!”
It was just the same as she remembered: richly patterned rug covering the wooden planks beneath, a pile of pillows at the centre with a cut-glass lamp hanging above, altar standing at attention in one corner, the air heavy with ink and incense. An otherworldly oasis amid the bustle of the village outside. But the person who jumped and turned to greet her was not Mae.
“Oh!” Aviva stopped short of throwing her arms around the figure. “I’m sorry. I thought--”
“No no,” the woman replied even as she shied away from the almost-hug, her dark eyes wide and startled. “It's alright. You're, ah, you're not wrong, this is Mae’s tent. You found it!” She wiggled her fingers in awkward celebration. She was petite even for an Elf, almost childlike, her slight figure hidden by an oversized blue shawl. Her scalp, shaved clean but for a dark mop of hair at the crown, was a mural of intricate black linework extending in elegant tendrils down her neck and disappearing into the collar of her tunic. “Are you a client?” she asked, then paused, squinting for a moment until realisation struck. “Wait, are you... You’re Lux! The Hero of Light!”
“Aviva,” the Tiefling responded without thinking, starting at how easily her given name rose to her lips. Halei, Elerian and Cid all used it, but she had not realised how reaccustomed she had become to hearing it -- and how much she had missed it. “I’m a client and a friend. Is Mae here?”
The Elf’s expression fell. “No. Not right now. She’s…” She trailed off, a brief internal debate playing across her face, then she sighed, her slender shoulders sagging. “In truth, I haven't seen her in some time. She just disappeared one day. Left everything set up--” she waved a hand at the tent around her, “--and vanished, about a year ago.” She looked up at Aviva, trying her best not to seem hopeful. “Have you seen her? In your travels?”
Aviva shook her head, a quiet sadness creeping into her heart. “No. But I have a feeling I know where she is.”
“You do?” The Elf cocked her head, long ears twitching. “You… don’t sound happy to say that.”
“No,” Aviva answered honestly, “I’m not. But if it helps, I don’t think any harm has come to her.” She offered a small smile. “I think she’s okay.”
The Elf folded her arms as if against a chill, her gaze dropping from Aviva to the altar in the corner. “She was Called, wasn’t she?”
Aviva opened her mouth, then closed it again, unable to hide her shock. “Yeah,” she said finally. “I think she was.” She chewed her lip. “How do you know about the Calling?”
“She told me.” The Elf sat heavily on a large cushion, gesturing for Aviva to join her on the pile of pillows. “She’d been having weird dreams for awhile. She said she could feel something… tugging at her, whispering in the back of her mind. She started to get irritable, snapping at me and at clients, and started to draw this round six-spoked sigil in her sketches--”
“What did you do with those sketches?” Aviva leaned toward the smaller woman, her voice suddenly deadly serious. “Do you still have them?”
“I-- I burnt them, after she left.” The Elf looked nervous. “They were making me uncomfortable. They felt… I dunno, wrong. Is that bad?”
Taking a deep breath, Aviva softened. “No. That was probably the best thing you could have done. The forces of Chaos are doing everything they can to tear the world apart, sowing fear and madness wherever they touch. Anything you can do to combat that, even something as seemingly insignificant as burning their sigil, helps.”
“Well, that’s why we’re all here, right?” The corner of the Elf’s mouth quirked into a lopsided smile. “To do what we can to help you on your quest.”
Aviva huffed, her eyes following the patterns on the rug at her feet. “Yeah.” Their quest. Their grand bloody destiny. Everyone in Crescent Lake, putting themselves in danger to help her merry band. “I’m sorry Mae’s not here,” she murmured. “Truly. Are you two…?”
The Elf frowned in curious confusion, then shook her head with a chuckle. “No, nothing like that. I’m her apprentice-- ah, was,” she corrected herself sadly. Then she held out her hand. “I’m Aesuithiel. Mae always called me Su.”
With a smile, Aviva shook her hand. “That’s a beautiful name.” She paused, tracing the root of a familiar word. “Means ‘birdlike’, yeah?”
“You speak Elvish!” Su sounded impressed.
“Surprisingly useful language,” Aviva grinned. She glanced around the tent as an idea began to form in her mind. “Are you set up to work?”
Su spread her arms wide. “Yes, absolutely. Are you interested in something? I’m not as fast as Mae, so it will take a bit longer and probably hurt a bit more, but it would be an honour to tattoo a Hero of Light.”
Aviva shook her head quickly. “Please, no. I don’t want to be a Hero of Light today. It’s fucking exhausting.” She smiled softly. “I want something for me. I need something for me.” A wave of anxiety stopped her words. She looked at Su, watching her with the same gentle focus she always saw in Mae, and she exhaled slowly. “The past few days have been… really hard. I mean, we knew they’d be trying, but… not like this, not for me. I feel like I’ve been torn open. These wounds are so deep and so old that I can’t remember a time they weren’t there, but they’re open all the way to the surface now and they’re bleeding and raw and I can’t stop screaming. But I need to heal. I’ve been burned to cinders and I need to rise from those ashes. If I want to take care of the people I love, I need to take care of myself. So I need something that will remind me of that.”
“From the ashes,” Su murmured, nodding to herself. “I think that’s where we can begin. Where were you thinking?”
“Here.” Aviva spread a palm against her chest. “I have a small piece here--” she pressed her fingers into her sternum, “--but the space above is entirely open.”
“I can work with that. Do you pray?”
“Yeah.”
Su tilted her head toward the altar. “Why don’t you take a few minutes while I start to get something sketched out? Meditate, take a nap; do what feels right for the time being.”
With a nod, Aviva rose from the pillows and stepped around them to kneel in front of the low table, taking in the mingled scents of incense and dried herbs. She would do whatever was needed to protect those dearest to her heart, but first she needed to ensure she could include herself among that number. The small statue of a nondescript deity greeted her impassively, and for the first time, she took in its smooth expression and neutral posture. “I never did ask,” she said, peering over her shoulder at Su, “who is this idol supposed to be?”
Opening her sketchbook, the Elf smiled. “Whoever you need it to be.”
* * *
“Hey, friend. Welcome back.”
Conscious but deeply disoriented, Aviva sat up and rubbed her eyes. Incense and ink and dappled light. Mae’s tent. “Was I asleep?”
Su nodded. “For a little while. How are you feeling?”
“Ready.” Aviva stretched, cracked her back and turned to face the Elf, still seated on her cushion. “How’s it coming?”
“Perfect timing, actually; I’m just about… done.” Holding her pencil between her teeth, Su turned the sketchbook around and held it up for Aviva to see.
Aviva stared at the drawing for a long time, turning it over in her mind, one hand moving to her chest; when she spoke again, she found her mouth had gone dry. “Yeah.”
“Okay.” Su removed the pencil from her mouth and set it on the low table beside her, followed by the sketchbook. “Let’s get you set up. Remove your top, please.” Aviva did as instructed, unbuckling her belt and slipping her kurta over her head, and Su smiled as the creeping vines, swirling music and other inked designs revealed themselves on her arms. She peered at the runes adorning the Tiefling’s sternum. “‘The sacred from the profane.’ That’s a powerful charm.”
“You speak Infernal?” It was Aviva’s turn to be impressed.
“Mae,” Su answered simply. “Do you need to cover up?”
Aviva snorted. “Funny story. I had kidnapper-assassins come after me while my dajyr and I were sleeping in a tavern in Pravoka; in their attempt to save us, the entire rest of our crew ended up seeing us stark naked and covered in blood. Very little fazes me when it comes to skin anymore.”
Su barked a surprised laugh. “I’m fascinated by how blithely you mention kidnapper-assassins. Is that all in a day’s work for you now?”
“Ah… Something like that, yeah.” An embarrassed flush crept across Aviva’s cheeks; she had forgotten such outlandish stories were not common conversation.
“Lie back, then. Let me know if you get cold and I’ll grab you a blanket.” Su fussed with the pillows for a time, tucking them into place to ensure Aviva was as comfortable as possible. Retrieving a small pot of paint and a thin brush from the table, Su brushed the outline of the drawing onto Aviva’s skin, laying out the curves and edges, ensuring symmetry. Once she had finished, she reached under the table and produced a hand mirror. “Placement alright?”
Aviva smiled at her reflection in the glass. “Very.” She still looked tired, as if she hadn’t slept a full night in days, but the despair in the lines of her face had been replaced by something else: determination. She passed the mirror back to Su and spread her hands on her stomach. “Let’s do this.”
With a nod, Su launched into her pre-session spiel. They both knew Aviva was perfectly aware of what was in store, but it was standard for her craft. Tattoos are permanent modifications to the body, she recited with a somewhat wry expression, and cannot be removed by any means short of magic. Inside the tent was a safe space, the modifications a type of transformative ritual, and Aviva’s only responsibilities were to relax, breathe, and listen to her body’s needs. Su would be there to guide her verbally if she wanted it, and to work in quiet if she did not. If she required a break at any point, for water or a snack or to process something that had been drawn to the surface, she needed only to indicate and they would pause. Aviva nodded her confirmation, oddly comforted by the familiarity of the words, if not the voice repeating them. There was no turning back now.
Su dipped her needle in the pot of ink and tapped away the excess. Aviva breathed.
Her heart pounded. Her skin burned. Her mind descended, the pain in her chest reaching its fingers through the darkness into every part of her. It touched the tightening in her lungs, the paralysing fear of death and loss that gnawed at her in nightmares and dreamscapes. It touched the twisting in her stomach, the searing guilt for so often taking her mother's love for granted, the one person who always loved her and now sat in bondage. It touched the tension in her arms, the desperate need to cling to those she loved, to guard their tiny flickering flames against the hurricane of hate and fear that defined her existence. It touched the pressure in her ribcage, where Jaxa’s twisted, monstrous version of love threatened to seep like poison into the cracks in her bones. It touched the disquiet in her legs, that longed for the days she felt wild and free even once she had realised that that freedom came at the cost of truly connecting with anyone. It touched the bitterness in her throat, the hate she bore herself for being a walking open wound, always crying, always needy, for wishing to be the protector and instead becoming the protected…
“Stop,” she whispered.
Instantly, the needle halted and Su’s hands withdrew from her chest. “What do you need?”
Aviva gritted her teeth, brow furrowing above closed eyes. “I don’t want to cry again.”
“Why not?”
“It’s all I’ve been doing for days.” She fought for a measured breath. “I just keep crying and it feels like it’ll never stop. I’m tired of crying.”
“Sometimes it’s what your soul needs,” Su prompted gently.
“It feels weak.”
“You know it’s not.” Tentatively, Su took Aviva’s hand. “You know it’s not.”
“...I know.”
Clinging to the Elf’s little fingers, Aviva covered her eyes with her free hand and sobbed.
* * *
By the time her weeping had eased, she was shivering. She knew her body was not cold, merely experiencing the aftereffects of the receding emotional tide, but she acknowledged the validity of the sensation and accepted the offered blanket with a grateful nod. When she was ready, Su resumed her work. They stopped twice more as waves of tears broke against her shores, but they were smaller now, easier. She accepted that she needed to cry, and she let the ripples come.
Eventually, as her consciousness returned more fully to the present, they began to speak as friends. Su had grown up in Aelfheim, she learned, moving from one poor neighbourhood to another as her parents searched for work. She had always felt a connection to the gods and for a time had considered entering the priesthood, but found hedge magic had always appealed to her more than robes and churches -- much to her father’s disappointment, she noted with a purse of her lips. For years she worked as a street artist drawing portraits for tourists, but getting her first tattoo led her down the path of the body as canvas. She had met Mae at a festival a few summers prior and struck up a conversation about the intricate designs on her tail; the rest, she said, was history.
“It’s over.” Setting down her needle and dipping her cleaning cloth in its bowl of herbal tincture, Su smiled. “You made it through.”
With a heavy groan, Aviva pushed herself up to sitting, letting the blanket fall into her lap. “I feel like I’ve been to the underworld and back.”
“In some ways, you have.” Su pressed the cloth to the fresh ink, carefully wiping away the excess. “Do you need water or a snack?”
“No, thank you. What time is it?”
Su hummed and turned on her cushion to peek beneath a corner of the tent’s window covering. “Early evening?”
“Oh. Oh.” Aviva’s brows rose, then she huffed a soft laugh. “I don’t think I told anyone where I went. I just sort of left on a wander. Reliving my misspent youth, evidently.”
“Will your friends be worried?”
“Nah.” Aviva waved a dismissive hand. “They trust me to take care of myself.” She froze mid-gesture and silently repeated her statement. “...Huh.”
Hiding a knowing smirk, Su slid the mirror from beneath the table. “Your journey, friend. Have a look.”
Aviva’s breath caught in her throat. She had approved the sketch, had watched the image form upside-down on her skin, but seeing it in full flight was something entirely new: a phoenix, constructed of notes and staves and delicate filigree, its body a treble clef, its wings stretching to her collarbones. Su had turned the runes on her sternum into one of the bird’s tails, as if the talisman had always meant to become a part of something larger. It was exquisite, the blackwork somehow vibrant and alive, ringed in the smoky grey outline of its flames. Silently, she nodded.
Reaching beneath Aviva’s arms, Su began to wrap her torso in long strips of clean bandage, rattling off her physical and spiritual aftercare instructions. She helped the Tiefling wriggle back into her kurta and advised her to wear looser clothing for the next few days. Aviva bobbed her head along with Su’s list and refused her offered discount, tipping generously to make up the difference. Finally, she rose, rolling out the stiffness in her spine. “I needed this. You have no idea how much I needed this. Thank you.”
Su flushed, her professional demeanour melting back into the shy, restive Elf Aviva had met just a few hours ago. “You needed this, but I think I needed to be the one to give it to you. So thank you for that.” She paused, and after a moment, she took Aviva’s larger hand in both of hers. “I can tell you don’t often feel like a hero. Whatever you’ve got going on inside of you won’t let you see yourself as special. But you are. I can tell that just from an afternoon working with you. Your spirit is good. Your best is good. You are good. Chaos is going to try and tell you otherwise, but… fuck ‘em. Be the light in the darkness that guides us home, even those we’re worried are lost. They’ll follow you. Be a hero.”
For a long time, Aviva said nothing, stunned into silence by sincerity of the Elf’s words. Then she grinned. “Do you want to get something to eat? I don’t know about you, but I’m suddenly starving.” She softened into a smile and squeezed Su’s hands. “And I’ll never be so rich as to turn away a friend.”
Su considered, then returned the smile. “Yeah. I’d like that.”
(Su was loosely based on my dear friend K, of @glitchinthesystemspiderbyte. She is a very good human and wears absurdly long ear tips when we LARP. The names Mae and Su are stolen from one of @stufflaalikes‘ long form writing projects. Credit where credit is due.)

I am a multi-muse! I’m simply lacking in time management skills to actually get all of my graphics and whatnot update since mushing all of my muses into one blog on top of Noel’s old one.
My URL is an attempt to be Clever and cover many bases at once. Each muse comes with a “pun” of sorts that can play into the main url. Nicholas, Noel, and Daniel are the primary muses, with the others available upon request.
Age of Sail ;; Noel Thomas Mercer - Modern England. (1648-Present).
Born in the middle of the seventeenth century he, was born into the latest era in which a peasant boy could hope to ascend to a gentleman’s title – with the only route of option being that of becoming an officer in the Royal Navy. While born a human, the lack of one of England’s representatives tolled on the Kingdom and required a new one step into Nicholas’ place. Having proven himself to be what constitutes an ideal Englishman - loyal, gritty, fiercely devoted to his King and Country - Noel was granted the life of an Immortal. And he complains about every moment of it.
Age of (chain) Mail ;; Sir Nicholas William Grey - Medieval England/Plantagenet England (1048-1514)
Born in the late 10th century, he came to represent the Kingdom of England under the guidance of the royal family Plantagenet. He served as a personal, immortal bodyguard and advisor to the Kings of England throughout the medieval era until the aftermath of the War of the Roses & the rise of Tudor England left him so disconnected from his kingdom that he could no longer serve. Some say he still haunts the Tower of London to this day, but modern sightings are incredibly rare.
Age of Rail ;; Daniel Aleksander King Hill Fitzroy - Manhattan/New York/The United States of America (1627-Present)
Born and soon orphaned in the Dutch colony of New Amsterdam in the early days of its conception, adopted into the British Empire, he learned and grew with the fledgling colony and developed a right love of the ideas of equality and fairness. He was loyal to the crown and fought desperately to keep order within the colony, to stamp out the Rebellion. However, the will of the People won out, and Daniel found himself growing ever prouder of his People as time went by. America itself went through many tests in its time, questioning what was right and what was fair, the struggle of embodying an entire nation is not an easy task, but the weight has fallen upon his shoulders.
Non-primary muses, in order from most to least developed.
Gabriel Emmanuel Hill, The American Southwest/Deseret/Utah. (Daniel’s son!) Bradley Marion Walker-Rhodes, Appalachia/Tennessee. Rhydian “Rhys” Eurig Mathonwy, Wales Jonàs Immanuel Federer, Switzerland. Noah Jack Martin, Australia. (Noel’s son!) Ferdinand Muyskens, Belgium Thore Taubel, Brandenburg Thiel Joachim Semjezaheit, Prussia Santiago Tercero del Oroitz, Spain. MacKenzie James Hudson, Canada Richard Adlerstahn, Austria Johannes Becker, Steiermark Matthias Andersen, Denmark Special case: Milovar Menowen, Latveria. (Fictional country in Marvel Comics. I’m very undecided if I want to actually have him here???) Please note that my personifications are NOT the Hetalia character - and in most cases (particularly notable with Daniel!) they have almost nothing in common with their Hetalia canon counterpart. My muses are intended to co-exist with Hetalia muses, NOT replace them! Noel is of lower rank than Arthur, but still a representative of England, likewise for Daniel to Alfred. All of my muses have highly specific origins and if needed for comfort, they can pass as representatives of “lower” rungs on the ladder, ie Daniel a representative of New York, Noel is Northern England/Working Class, Noah is Queensland, etc.

[3] Tanya Turner poses on the Facebook account with a horse whip in her hand and a book titled “Pleasure Activism” in the other.[4] Concerns with the age threshold of teaching minors about BDSM, masturbation and other sex while using drugs is raising a lot of eyes.
Tanya Turner - Tanya is a femme, fat, queer, magical pleasure worker, educator, & artist. She was raised in rural Kentucky by a host of witchy women alongside sisters and cousins. A coven-like mountain matriarchy, if you will, on Stoney Fork. Her craft tools are candles, crystals, oils, plants, music, sex toys, tarot, the moon, and instincts of a triple water sign (Cancer Sun - Scorpio Moon & Rising). In 2012, Tanya started this Appalachian sex ed collect called Sexy Sex Ed and co-founded the party podcast known as Trillbillies in 2017. With over a decade of rural organizing practice toward healing, abolition, & liberation, she fantasizes about a whole other world. Tanya lives high on a Kentucky mountaintop with lots of plants, a steamy hot tub, and several furry familiars You can join her coven at patreon.com/HaintT.[5]
Many questions are rising regarding the need to introduce the topic of masturbation to toddlers. In the video Turner explains that when her nephews were able to talk, she starting to talk with them about masturbation.[6] She does state that the ability to explore one’s body does need to be in a consensual way. Some are asking if this is a self admission to grooming.
Caitlin Cummings – Caitlin Cummings is a 23 year old radical queer mountain woman that grew up in the hollers of Vicco, KY. She grew up always hearing about the injustices of the world and wanting to do things to help. She is currently working on a degree in Human Services where she plans to expand her sex ed work to help people understand the with proper sex ed and body love, you can heal in a lot of different ways, as she has herself. She’s worked with All Access EKY through Appalshop making media to raise awareness about reproductive Healthcare issues in Appalachia. Caitlin has volunteered with different organizations through her college life including WMMT’s Girls Rock Camp in Whitesburg, KY which is a camp made to empower girls, gender non-conforming, and trans youth with music, self-expression, and self-love, as well as The Cottage, a child abuse advocacy center that handles cases of child abuse in ages one to seventeen years old. She’s also volunteered with The New Opportunity School for Women which is a program out of Berea, KY that helps women in Appalachia with educational, financial and personal circumstance in their life. Caitlin loves her plants, social justice and good food.[7]
Larah Helayne – Larah Helayne is an eighteen year old musician, songwriter, and activist, based in Mount Sterling, Kentucky. Growing up in the Appalachian foothills, Larah’s life and work have been greatly impacted by the magnificence of the mountains. Their songs and activism reflect both the beauty and struggles of living in Eastern Kentucky, while weaving in the story of her own wild and wonderful life. Larah places great value and focus on the rich musical heritage of her home, especially in regards to banjo, dance calling, and protest songs. As a young, nonbinary queer in Appalachia, Larah strives to use their songs, voice, and life to fight for human rights and systematic change in the region, through music, community, organizing, and nonprofit work. Larah founded their school’s first Gender Sexuality Alliance, “Open Light,” which now has over 45 members. They are proud alumni and intern of Girls Rock Whitesburg, and a member of the Family Folk Week Steering committee at Hindman Settlement School. Larah is a sex educator with Sexy Sex Ed, and spends time co-facilitating sex education workshops for fellow Appalachian youth.[8]
Kirstyn Ooten – Kirstyn is a young, fat, differently-abled, queer community organizer and college student from southern West Virginia. She works as a VISTA in Charleston, and works with kids! She has always dreamt of a space where fat folks are appreciated, normalized, and safe, so she created it. Kirstyn led West Virginia’s first Body Positive Party in 2019, and that has led her into a world of fighting for inclusivity for people like her. She has also worked with Planned Parenthood to secure period products for students across southern WV. Although Kirstyn has take a step back in the last 6 months to focus on health, she is back and better than ever! She uses the same techniques from the Sexy Sex Ed platform in her daily job, and is very passionate about sexuality education. Kirstyn loves all things plants and body love![9]
The next steps for this group are yet to be determined. Will conservatives rise enough questions regarding the group to cause an investigation to take place? These are just a few of the questions that are going through the minds of many people who are asking their selves if Sexy Sex Ed Inc. crossed the line.

Scrapbook 2021 | Part II
For anyone that’s new to this, this is how I keep track of all of the things I enjoy and/or create throughout the year. I have literally been doing this since I had a livejournal. I think the first one was 2011? Maybe? In which case, woohoo, ten years of scrapbooking!
It’s a nice little snippet of my life and helps to organize my brain.
A reminder:
Normal font - Indifferent/Neutral Italicized font - Enjoyed bold font - Loved with an asterisk* - All time favorite (bracketed titles) - Re-watches/Re-reads strikethough - Disliked
Goals are: read 80 books (as of today, i am at 31 books, which sounds not great but goodreads assures me that it’s only 1 book behind schedule), finish five video games (at two at the moment... mostly because I keep dragging my feet on actually finishing P5R), write more than 20 fics (at... 6) or something larger than 20k (negative), and write either an original short story or start a novel (i have started plotting for the novel? does that count?)

Stress Relief by spqr | Loki | Loki/Mobius | 3.5k | “Let me read you something,” Loki says. He rifles through the pages, clears his throat, and Mobius puts a hand over his eyes because he knows what’s coming before Loki even reads the first word—“Pēdīcābō ego vōs et irrumābō—“

“The moral crisis of poverty amid vast wealth is inseparable from the injustice of systemic racism, ecological devastation, and our militarized war economy.” by Rev. Dr. William Barber II, March 30, 2020. (complete text below)
***
The United States is the wealthiest nation in the history of the world, yet millions of American families have had to set up crowdfunding sites to try to raise money for their loved ones’ medical bills. Millions more can buy unleaded gasoline for their car, but they can’t get unleaded water in their homes. Almost half of America’s workers—whether in Appalachia or Alabama, California or Carolina—work for less than a living wage. And as school buildings in poor communities crumble for lack of investment, America’s billionaires are paying a lower tax rate than the poorest half of households.
This moral crisis is coming to a head as the coronavirus pandemic lays bare America’s deep injustices. While the virus itself does not discriminate, it is the poor and disenfranchised who will experience the most suffering and death. They’re the ones who are least likely to have health care or paid sick leave, and the most likely to lose work hours. And though children appear less vulnerable to the virus than adults, America’s nearly forty million poor and low-income children are at serious risk of losing access to food, shelter, education, and housing in the economic fallout from the pandemic.
The underlying disease, in other words, is poverty, which was killing nearly 700 of us every day in the world’s wealthiest country, long before anyone had heard of COVID-19.
The moral crisis of poverty amid vast wealth is inseparable from the injustice of systemic racism, ecological devastation, and our militarized war economy. It is only a minority rule sustained by voter suppression and gerrymandering that subverts the will of the people. To redeem the soul of America—and survive a pandemic—we must have a moral fusion movement that cuts across race, gender, class, and cultural divides.
The United States has always been a nation at odds with its professed aspirations of equality and justice for all—from the genocide of original inhabitants to slavery to military aggression abroad. But there have been periods in our history when courageous social movements have made significant advances. We must learn from those who’ve gone before us as we strive to build a movement that can tackle today’s injustices—and help all of us survive.
In the aftermath of the Civil War, African Americans who had just escaped slavery joined with white allies to form coalitions that won control of nearly every southern legislature. These Reconstruction-era political alliances enacted new constitutions that advanced moral agendas, including, for the first time, the right to public education.
During the Great Depression, farmers, workers, veterans, and others rose up to demand bold government action to ease the pain of the economic crisis on ordinary Americans. This led to New Deal policies, programs, and public works projects that we still benefit from today, such as Social Security and basic labor protections.
Pushed by these movements, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt even called in 1944 for an economic bill of rights, declaring: “We cannot be content, no matter how high that general standard of living may be, if some fraction of our people—whether it be one-third or one-fifth or one-tenth—is ill-fed, ill-clothed, ill-housed, and insecure.”
During what I like to call the “Second Reconstruction” over the following decades, a coalition of blacks and progressive whites began dismantling the racist Jim Crow laws and won key legislative victories, including the Civil Rights Act, the Voting Rights Act, and the Fair Housing Act.
With each period of advancement has come a formidable backlash. This is how we find ourselves today, in the year 2020, with levels of economic inequality as severe as during the original Gilded Age a century ago. Since the Supreme Court’s 2013 Shelby decision, Americans have had fewer voting rights protections than we did fifty-five years ago, while thanks to the earlier Citizens United ruling, corporations can invest unlimited sums of money to influence elections.
In response to fair tax reforms, the wealthy have used their economic clout to slash their IRS bills, cutting the top marginal income tax rate from more than 90 percent in the 1950s to 37 percent today. In response to the hard-fought wins of the labor movement, corporate lobbyists have rammed through one anti-worker law after another, slashing the share of U.S. workers protected by unions nearly in half, from 20.1 percent in 1983 to just 10.5 percent in 2018.
Decades after Depression-era reforms, Wall Street fought successfully to deregulate the financial system, paving the way for the 2008 financial crash that caused millions to lose their homes and livelihoods. And the ultra-rich and big corporations have also managed to dominate our campaign finance system, making it easier for them to buy off politicians who commit to rigging the rules against the poor and the environment, and to suppress voting rights, making it harder for the poor to fight back.
Our military budgets continue to rise, now grabbing more than fifty-three cents of every discretionary federal dollar to pay for wars abroad and pushing our ability to pay for health care for all, for a Green New Deal, for jobs and education, and infrastructure, further and further away.
In short, the official measure of poverty doesn’t begin to touch the depth and breadth of economic hardship in the world’s wealthiest nation, where 40 percent of us can’t afford a $400 emergency.
The wars that those military budgets fund continue to escalate. They don’t make us safer, and they’ve led to the deaths of thousands of poor people in Afghanistan, Syria, Somalia, and beyond, as well as the displacement of millions of refugees, the destruction of water sources, and the contamination of the environments of whole countries.
The only ones who benefit are the millionaire CEOs of military companies, who are getting richer every year on the more than $350 billion—half the military budget—that goes directly to their corporations. In the meantime 23,000 low-ranking troops earn so little that they and their families qualify for food stamps.
Key to these rollbacks: controlling the narrative about who is poor in America and the world. It is in the interest of the greedy and the powerful to perpetuate myths of deservedness—that they deserve their wealth and power because they are smarter and work harder, while the poor deserve to be poor because they are lazy and intellectually inferior.
It’s also in their interest to perpetuate the myth that the poverty problem has largely been solved and so we needn’t worry about the rich getting richer—even while our real social safety net is full of gaping holes. This myth has been reinforced by our deeply flawed official measurements of poverty and economic hardship.
The way the U.S. government counts who is poor and who is not, frankly, is a sixty-year-old mess that doesn’t tell us what we need to know. It’s an inflation-adjusted measure of the cost of a basket of food in 1955 relative to household income, adjusted for family size—and it’s still the way we measure poverty today.
But this measure doesn’t account for the costs of housing, child care, or health care, much less twenty-first-century needs like internet access or cell phone service. It doesn’t even track the impacts of anti- poverty programs like Medicaid or the earned income tax credit, obscuring the role they play in reducing poverty.
In short, the official measure of poverty doesn’t begin to touch the depth and breadth of economic hardship in the world’s wealthiest nation, where 40 percent of us can’t afford a $400 emergency.
In a report with the Institute for Policy Studies, the Poor People’s Campaign found that nearly 140 million Americans were poor or low-income—including more than a third of white people, 40 percent of Asian people, approximately 60 percent each of indigenous people and black people, and 64 percent of Latinx people. LGBTQ people are also disproportionately affected.
Further, the very condition of being poor in the United States has been criminalized through a system of racial profiling, cash bail, the myth of the Reagan-era “Welfare Queen,” arrests for things such as laying one’s head on a park bench, passing out food to unsheltered people, and extraordinary fines and fees for misdemeanors such as failing to use a turn signal, and simply walking while black or trans.
We are a nation crying out for security, equity, and justice. We need racial equity. We need good jobs. We need quality public education. We need a strong social safety net. We need health care to be understood as a human right for all of us. We need security for people living with disabilities. We need to be a nation that opens our hearts and neighborhoods to immigrants. We need safe and healthy environments where our children can thrive instead of struggling to survive.
With the coronavirus pandemic bringing our country’s equally urgent poverty crisis into stark relief, we cannot simply wait for change. It must come now.
America is an imperfect nation, but we have made important advancements against interconnected injustices in the past.
We can do it again, and we know how. Now is the time to fight for the heart and soul of this democracy.

Meet: the Silver Canary!
Before the war, Martin Goldberg was a West Virginia vigilante going by the moniker of the Silver Canary - defender of good, light against the darkness. Although he originally fought the typical low-lifes and alleyway thugs, he soon turned his righteous gaze to the problems that plagued the working class - corrupt bosses (that is to say, all of them), strike breakers, heartless corporations, and the automation that threatened to replace every job in West Virginia. He took his name from the idiomatic canary in the coal mines that dotted his home state - in the fight against evil, the Silver Canary was on the front lines and would be the first to fall when things got too bad to go on.
Tales of his exploits eventually reached the writers of Hubris Comics, who attempted to spread the Silver Canary’s story to the people of Boston and beyond, changing his name to the Silver Shroud to protect his identity. However; propaganda laws forced the writers to defang his ideals and adventures - his fight against automated workers and strike breakers, for example, was turned into a pulpy fight against the Mechanist and his army of robots.
As his last act of defiance, Goldberg broke into Vault Tec University and altered many of the future residents of Vault 76 from wealthy executives who could buy the title of “America’s best and brightest” to certain locals who he hoped would embody this concept - including, ultimately, himself.
25 years later, Goldberg emerged from Vault 76 into a ruined Appalachia. One fraught with dangers to overcome before rebuilding. One that, some day soon, may need the Silver Canary to rise again.

(Almost) all my Fallout OCs
because I can
Casey Lee Loomis
Location: Appalachia, Vault 76, Forest Region
Age: 35
Casey is outgoing, hyperactive, a social butterfly and sexual liberated little minx. He entered Vault 76 with his parents at the age of 10. (Rumor had it that Casey had his way paid but Casey passed the examinations fairly and properly) However, he never performed exceptionally in the vault career programs and was remained childish in personality in the close-knit village environment. Life was comfortable in the vault and the outside it seemed a million years away. Romantically, he had multiple partners. Bordem, a perpetual need for attention, and raging hormones had him starting his exploration at 15 with the vaults library intern and he experimented from then thereon. He married the head physician, Robert Covington, at 29. They separated at Robert’s request one month before Reclamation Day and left Casey stunned and hurt.
The Vault doors opened in late October, Casey left alone and met Nate Cortez mid-November by sheer accident. Being his first human interaction outside the Vault, Casey sticks to this half-feral man like Wonderglue and regales him with cheerful word vomit day and night. One way or another, they spend the rest of their lives together. They rejoin the Brotherhood in the west and eventually abandon it for a life similar to what they had in Appalachia. Casey leaves behind his two children and their mother.
Canonically, Casey kills Robert early 2103 out of unexplored hurt and rage then conceals the crime in the nearby river.
Senior Scribe Grise

Location: Commonwealth, Prydwen, Citadel
Age: 38 (yikes)
Grise is a cryptic, zealous, and eclectically perverse snake of a man whose sees both his existence and eventual death as plights of a martyr. He is a direct descendant of Casey Lee Loomis but, as with the entirety of his family line, has disowned his name. Grise is the last in a long line of scribes with little over 150 years of generational dedication to the cause. He has no children or spouse.
He’d always been an outspoken fundamentalist and loyal Maxson-line supporter, earning him the chance to join the transport party that escorted the young Maxson to the highly-respected Lyons. At the Citadel, he faded int the background of a well-established hierarchy, slowly making a name for himself by fair means, waiting all the while the day the young Maxson might take control.
His slow descent into madness began after Squire Maxson’s encounter with the Deathclaw. Feeding off the buzz over this seemingly impossible victory, he discreetly shared his views on the dynamic purity of the Maxson line and its necessity for a successful future. Under the cover of back-door think tanks turned sermons and coded radio chatter, the Cult of Maxson grew. Grise did not directly influence any political maneuvers but cultivated a volatile environment.
His views of Arthur Maxson had gone from respected prince to indomitable diety, unable to see Arthur Maxson’s true moral code and regards the Elder’s distaste for him as a test of loyalty and passion.
Anita Stallworth
Location: Appalachia, The Mire, Cranberry Bog, Watoga
Age: 39
Anita is confident, sharp-witted, hard-boiled by necessity, and hungry for control of her future. She was born in Maryland but moved with her family to West Virginia while she was still young. Appalachia was an up and coming area that attracted her family with its scenic landscape and lively political circle. The bombs dropped when she was fourteen and home alone. Her father was away on “business” and her mother was having spa treatments done at Whitesprings. Neither one was heard from again.
While ransacking her mansion, members of the Free States found, took her in and raised her into young adulthood at Harpers Ferry. Despite her dispel of them, she grew to respect their tenacity but hated the isolationist life. She left them for an exhaustive journey to investigate Whitesprings for info about her mother and found the place clean and empty. After that, she spent a decade wandering in and out of Appalachia, mostly sticking to the Mire and Cranberry Bog, assisting the various groups for a quick cap and never committing to any one creed. She worked as a hired gun at Fort Defiance until orders got too expensive for their taste.
Out to find the next bigger and better thing that might give her the edge, She finds her way into the Enclave after Robert(who is supposed to be dead but I can have AUs okay) has already established his position and quickly rises past him in rank to General. She remains in power with Enclave.
Robert Covington
Location: Appalachia, Vault 76, Enclave Bunker, transient
Age: 47
Robert is cold, analytical, immensely reserved about his predilections, and cares more for prestige and security than anything. He entered the vault at 21, not entirely finished with medical school but flash trained at the last minute by VTU for the role of Physician in Vault 76. His parents: Mother being an investment broker and father a steel mogel with a military contract, did not make the cut for entry. Leaving them behind, and their constant pressure for acceptance, was a small relief to Robert.
In the vault, he was private and kept to himself in downtime. Interacting briefly with others only at social events and holidays. An occasional drink and rare sweet were his small pleasures, along with old westerns and jazz music. Casey and he met by way of a routine eye exam with Casey complaining of poor vision. Casey’s impulsive energy, bold speech, and flash-bulb eyes attracted and excited him. Going against his limited morals and instead of recommending Casey’s to another doctor, he forged records to reflect necessary medical treatment to allow for extended private time and constant access to his patient, much to Casey’s enjoyment. At the peak of their secret affairs, he placed Casey on a homebound quarantine with access restricted only to himself. The Overseer caught wind of the quarantine by word of mouth and demanded an explanation as to why the quarantine was not reported. When she seemed unconvinced by his excuses and suspicious “records”, he attested that Casey and himself were in love and feared they’d be judged too harshly for their relationship. She believed him only after speaking with Casey directly but, only barely so.
To keep up appearances, Robert remained with Casey as a husband for six years until a month before Reclamation Day, considering Casey a liability to his survival in the wasteland. Canonically, he is killed by Casey within a year. Nonconically, he joins the Enclave after failing to be a successful wasteland doctor with Nate as a hired bodyguard and becomes Anita Stallworths personal chew toy.
Horace Beaufort
Age: 58
Horace is an ex-resident of vault 51. How he managed to escape the vault continues to be a matter of discussion and debate. I speculate that his role in the vault was to stir the pot or take advantage of chaos. He killed several of his fellow vault dwellers before leaving the said vault.
His prewar life was not glamorous. He enlisted young and was dishonorably discharged for fighting a fellow soldier in a bar. He called it “working out their differences” and they called it misconduct. The whole thing became a monkey he let sit on his back his whole life and refused to come back from. He saw pockets of brief jail time for more public disturbances and drunken disorderly, “dabbled” in drugs and tried his hand at married life. He has two adult children he barely knows and an ex-wife that hates his guts.
A post-vault world led him into an equally unglamorous attempt at raider life. He fell in with the Gourmands for a brief period as a “hunter”. He abandoned them all as the gangs began feuding. Somewhere in there, he met his best friend, Duke. @avaleon
He now lives in the forest region in an old shack selling old armor and eating anyone that happens to come around when he is hungry. Did I forget to mention he is a cannibal?
Milo Orson

Location: Commonwealth, Spectacle Island
Age: 36
Milo is career-minded (Elder Maxson’s favorite flavor of solider), a dry-humored freelance mercenary turned passionate Knight. His hobbies include killing undesirables on and off the clock and building secluded settlements for R&R.
While Paladin Danse had tank-like capabilities, Milo was more stealthy and the two complemented each other’s styles to make for a powerhouse two-man team. Sharing similar past times, the men enjoy each others company outside the battlefield at Milo’s personally designed Spectacle Island settlement for fishing, sparring, reading, and in-depth discussions. Milo designed and built a top floor suite for the Elder in the Airport, complete with its own shooting range and full bathroom. The Elder politely refused the gift and repurposed it for storage.
Despite his odd and indirect advances, Milo was the mastermind and main supporter of a black-body-suited shadow squad that gained Elder Maxson’s approval. Unofficially consisting of Paladin Danse, Knight-Commander Alton, Elder Maxson himself, and Senior Scribe Grise, this squad was loosely inspired by and created to emulate the disbanded Lyons Pride. The mission remained constant: eliminating hostiles seemingly overnight when no other squad would prevail. The shadow squad was titled Purity Control.
Senior Scribe Grise was forcibly removed from the squad after being caught taking night watches on missions just to stare at the Elder while he slept.
Vance Ainsley Alton

Location: Commonwealth, Citadel, Prydwen
Age: 38
Vance A. Alton is fiercely loyal, gentle in all things but war, cautiously private and confident in his skills as a soldier. He is a second generation Brother that has three constant loves: his Elder, his parents, and jogging.
Full bio here.
Jacob or “Jay”

Location: Commonwealth, Prydwen, Sanctuary
Jacob is somewhere between a blown fuse and a Furby with dying batteries that cheerfully declares your impending death from the closet you tried to suffocate it in. He is immensely charismatic and flawlessly disarming with the best of intentions. Until you have something he wants, of course.
After surviving the end of the world to wake up childless, spouseless, and alone, he became numb to consequence and moral choice. Joyfully, he played all factions against each other, bringing them together at the Battle of Bunker Hill at the cost of lives, intelligence, valuable resources, and relationships. He was commanded to choose his loyalties and he chose the Brotherhood for it’s unapologetic adherence to its duty to humanity. He attempted to continue relations with the Minutemen and lost their respect after participating in the killing of innocents in the attack on the Institute. He became Elder Maxson’s first Sentinal and drinks with Proctor Teagan in his downtime. As a side project, he oversaw the creation a tavern just outside the airport with the Brotherhood reaping benefits from the small economy that surrounds it.
Jelly”

Location: Commonwealth, The Castle
Jelly is known only as thus and was previously married to Jacob. She is trusting and fair in her judgments and has a strong sense of justice for both the human and nonhuman. She survives the cryogenics unbeknownst to Jacob and joins the Minutemen after the fall of the Institute and the Brotherhood assumes control of the Commonwealth. Provoked to rage and hurt by their narrow-minded views, she attacks the Prydwen single-handedly, separate of any faction or companion. She massacres the entirety of the ship, sparing only children, and takes the Captain’s hat and Elder’ s Jacket as trophies. She is appointed the new general of the Minutemen and wears her trophies boldly as proof of her conquest. She finds new love and comfort with Preston and long-lasting friendship in Curie and MacCready.

GET FAMILIAR: Weeks of July 22 and July 29, 2019

COMING SOON: Tyler Childers
Release Title: Country Squire (LP)
Release Date: Friday, August 2, 2019
What To Expect: 28-year-old Kentucky native Tyler Childers has been masterfully blending elements of bluegrass, country, and folk music together for nearly a decade now. He grew up in a blue-collar town located in the heart of coal country, and he began writing his own music at the age of 13 after singing in the church throughout his early years. He experienced massive commercial success in 2017 with his breakthrough album, Purgatory, which was produced by the legendary Sturgill Simpson and released under Amoeba Music on the Hickman Holler label.
Following the release of Purgatory, Rolling Stone even went so far as to dub him “the 21st Century Voice of Appalachia,” and the rising star has even bigger plans in store for 2019 with the release of his next full-length album titled Country Squire. He’s put out two singles from the record so far, “House Fire” and “All Your’n,” and both tracks show a more refined side to the traditionally raw nature of Childers’ voice. He has also delivered visuals for each of the two songs and the themes of the videos seem to be loosely connected, perhaps hinting that the album will possess a cohesive theme of its own. Whatever the case may be, one thing is for certain, - Childers is primed to build upon his status as the new King of Bluegrass when Country Squire comes out Friday, August 2nd.
Don’t miss Tyler Childers at The Anthem on December 13th, snag your tickets now!

LOCAL LEGENDS: YBN Cordae
Release Title: The Lost Boy (LP)
Release Date: Friday, July 26, 2019
What To Expect: For the past 12 months, YBN Cordae has been the undisputed hardest working MC from the DMV. He’s scored cosigns from the likes of Dr. Dre, H.E.R., and Logic as well as snagging a Chance The Rapper feature on “Bad Idea,” the nostalgia-inducing lead single from his upcoming project, The Lost Boy. After joining the emerging “internet rap clique” YBN collective in early 2018, Cordae blew onto the scene with his poignant remix of Eminem’s classic “My Name Is” and the somewhat controversial “Old n****s,” a song that was made in response to J. Cole’s “1985 - Intro to ‘The Fall Off’” and one that comments on the older generations’ perceived lack of respect for the young rappers trying to make a name for themselves in the modern era of hip-hop.
The Lost Boy will serve as Cordae’s first solo full-length effort (he and the rest of the YBN crew dropped YBN: The Mixtape back in late 2018) and the album’s first offerings have been nothing short of fantastic. The aforementioned “Bad Idea” is great in its own right, but true hip-hop heads should give the album’s other single, “Have Mercy,” a spin ASAP if they want to see Cordae’s songwriting talents and masterful wordplay on full display. The young Marylander uses the song’s chorus to ponder aloud:
“I don't know where I'm goin' (Huh) But I hope I'm on the right path Life'll hit you with a light jab Mike Tyson, strike back”
They’re potent lyrics that grapple with some of the more pressing issues facing a young star trying to make his own way in the world, and it utilizes a patented Cordae metaphor to help make it digestible and relatable for the listener. Amazingly, the PG County product is still less than three years removed from his days of roaming the halls of Westlake High School in Suitland, but that hasn’t slowed him down from becoming one of the most prolific pound-for-pound lyricists in the game at the moment. Cordae and the YBN boys are slowly becoming a force to be reckoned with the likes of which we haven’t seen from a rap collective in some time.

WILD CARD: Burna Boy
Release Title: African Giant (LP)
Release Date: Friday, July 26, 2019
What To Expect: Before one can fully understand the enigma that is Burna Boy, one must understand the subtle distinction between Afrobeat and Afrobeats. Afrobeat is the “sound of brass and percussion blending big-band bravado with traditional Nigerian yoruba, highlife, jazz and funk” (HuffPost) that was pioneered in Lagos, Nigeria by the legendary musician Fela Kuti. The modern “Afrobeats is both the evolution and in many ways antithesis of its prefixed forebear. Having slowly emerged over the past several years, it exists in diametrical opposition to all Kuti and his movement stood for, a mutated spawn in flat cap and British accent.” Now, enter Burna Boy, the Nigerian native at the forefront of the Afro-Fusion revolution currently sweeping the globe. He’s directly connected to the original sounds of the movement (his maternal grandfather actually managed the great Fela Kuti), and he’s acutely aware of the influential nature of his music and the staying power it holds with listeners. When asked by Billboard about his thoughts on the surging popularity of the Afrobeats genre, he claims, “everything started from Africa, and so music started from Africa. It’s all going to come back to its roots eventually. When you hear our music, it resonates in the soul.”
“Most Americans don’t even understand what I’m saying in my records, but they pick up on the vibe, the vibration,” says Burna in the same interview. Put simply, whether it be mellowed-out tunes like his smash-hit “Ye” or spirited bops like “Pull Up,” the lead single from his upcoming project, African Giant, he makes music that you feel. Burna and his team, which is lead by his mother and manager Bose Ogulu, were looking to capitalize on his current virality by announcing that African Giant would be dropping a mere two weeks before its release date. It’s a risk that most artists wouldn’t be willing to take, but what’s the point of drawing out a rollout when “there are more eyes on me,” as Burna coyly told Billboard. Be on the lookout for the project when it drops this Friday, July 26th, and don’t sleep on Burna as he continues to dominate the global charts.

The King and I
Until September 29, 2018

But when the Princess of France and her entourage arrive, it isn’t long before the all-male ‘academe’ have broken every one of their self-imposed rules. Shakespeare’s boisterous send-up of all those who try to turn their back on life is a dazzling parade of every weapon in the youthful playwright’s arsenal, from excruciating cross-purposes and impersonations to drunkenness and bust-ups. It’s a banquet of language, groaning with puns, rhymes and grotesque coinages“
Dance Nation

Whilst the event may have a slightly improvised air, the family is determined to make the best of its time together. As they attempt to focus on the traditional festivities, fears of the past and pressures of the future seep into the reunion and the precariousness of their position becomes increasingly evident.”
The Village
September 7, 2018; Theatre Royal Stratford East
“The Village transports the Lope de Vega’s Spanish play, Fuenteovejuna to contemporary India. It’s a powerful story of community and solidarity, and the lengths a person will go to protect themselves from tyranny. In Jyoti’s village, life is simple. People work and sing while living off the land. And finding a partner is far from her mind. She’d much prefer a delicious meal. Things are happy until the Inspector and his men come back to town. But when the tyrannical Inspector has his eye on Jyoti and he commits unspeakable acts against the village, everyone is pushed to breaking point. Will Jyoti dare turn him down despite what it may mean for her village?”

I love when things just … click. I love that feeling. I chase it. Hunt it. Throw myself into research waiting for that moment. Nothing refills the empty well like that moment.
I remember the exact moment Book 1’s title revealed itself. When I first read the phrase and the click echoed in my head. I paused and slowly opened my laptop and renamed the folder of messy chapters “The Butcher Bird.”
Here I am again.
I already slowly opened my notebook and wrote “The Rain Crow” in the cover. Each letter more certain than the one before and precise despite the pounding in my chest.
I knew it when I read it. I knew it but I didn’t write it and then - then - this song popped up on my writing mix.
Click.
Even the album name connects to a huge recurring theme/image. It’s there. It’s all there in front of me. And once again I am hungry for it. So hungry.

Jamil Apostol introducing a new studio single: Good Light
May 2022 - Jamil Apostol is an artist and songwriter who loves to connect with people through tuneful melodies and thoughtful lyrics. His musical style could be described as a combination of folk influences and easy-listening vibes. However, there is also an incredibly powerful healing quality to his sound, which makes it all the more special and engaging. His most recent studio single, “Good Light,” is a very inspiring song. This release reflects Jamil’s penchant for adventures on the road, as he proudly considers the whole world his home! He actually has travelled internationally as well, including visiting countries such as India, Guatemala, and Hawaii, on a quest to search for genuine connection and true celebration.
This particular song was written while he was in Oregon, right after a Native American elder told him to remember “Nikh Lakaii,” which translates to “Good Light,” hence the title of the track.. The artist was raised in Kentucky and Nevada, but he decided to spent the past eight years and counting living a rather nomadic lifestyle, going wherever fate might take him and soaking in a whole world of experiences and ideas. “Good Light” begins with a soothing acoustic guitar arpeggio, rich and delicate in its simplicity, but also very articulate. Jamil’s vocal style is direct, but also very soothing and understated, at times reminiscent of vocalists such as Elliott Smith, Damien Rice and Conor Oberst, only to mention a few.
The track features a refreshingly simple and earnest arrangement, diving deeper into the roots of the indie-folk genre. What truly stands out about this song is that it feels like a genuine portrait of Jamil as an artist and person: it’s exactly the kind of sound that comes to mind when you think of someone who has experienced moving from place to place and living life to the absolute fullest, regardless of where he might be at any given time. There is something truly special about the honesty that drives Jamil’s music, and allows a much deeper connection with the audience. Even people who are new to the indie-folk world would easily connect with the artist’s genuine personality and vibe.
This one is most definitely going to be right up your street if you are a fan of artists such as Sufjan Stevens, Francis Moon, Bright Eyes, Daughter, Rising Appalachia, and more.
Find out more about Jamil Apostol, and listen to “Good Light” as soon as it’s out on digital streaming services! The single will also come with a matching music video, expected to drop on Youtube soon.

Lead and Roses contains four short stories and one novella that further explore the irradiated wasteland of the 23rd century, framing the events of The Last Girl Scout. Good hunting, stalkers.
****
The past lies like a nightmare over the world.
Following up her debut novel, The Last Girl Scout, award-winning author Natalie H. Ironside presents a new collection of tales exploring the irradiated post-apocalypse of the 23rd century and the worlds we’ve built up from the ashes. Spanning genres including queer slice-of-life, military adventure, and horror, the five tales in this collection are sure to have something fun for all lovers of the post-apocalypse, whether they’re fans of The Last Girl Scout or just fans of the genre.
This collection includes:
Stories: Two women stand on the edge of oblivion and dare to believe in a future.
The Last American: A red star is rising over southern Appalachia, and one man has the courage to remain true to God and embody the spirit of Old America against the godless communist hordes. It goes about as well for him as you’d expect.
The White Goddess: A group of scientists set out to explore the wasteland and come face-to-face with the pernicious refusal of the past to die.
Werewolf: A boy who became a stormtrooper chasing dreams of heroism discovers that being a man of action doesn’t quite live up to expectations.
That’s a Christmas to Me: A woman struggling with her faith, her identity, and her dark and troubled past finds some small shred of redemption and learns an important lesson about motorcycle safety. (Originally published as a Patreon exclusive for the 2020 winter holiday season)
If you like queer post-apocalyptic adventure fiction, you should read "Lead and Roses" (out now! wow!)
