I love that Nightwing has files on how to take down all of his friends and they're okay with it, because it's a reasonable point to be made and because he trusts his team to tell them about it. I love that this is one of those crystal clear examples of Dick taking the things Batman does and doing them better, that he's not Batman Lite, but instead that he's Better Than Batman, that's the whole purpose of Nightwing's character, that's everything that Bruce wanted for him, to be the kind of Bat that Bruce sees himself as too damaged to be.

Complete Teen Titans Reading Guide -

This is mostly a passion project of mine about The Titans! The general consensus I have seen on this website is that their history is confusing and people don’t know where to start so …. This guide includes ALL pieces of Titans Media.

Even the ones that just include some of the core members on different teams because I want to and related series. I want to be as through and complete on this as possible.

(I dont include the JL: No Justice and ODYSSEY JL(2018) thing when they were taking on their role or something mind numbing along those lines because… its JL & i didn’t really care and frankly who does ? But it’s before the tom taylor titans run so I wanted to preface with that. )

Just to start this is all my opinion and you can really begin wherever you feel like it if you want to !

TEEN TITANS (1966)

before you read the Teen Titans (1966) series you should read

- Brave and The Bold ( 1955) #54 and #60 if you want to read right from the start chronologically!

- Showcase #59 before Roy joins the team

The Original Team of the TEEN TITANS was a series that ran through the 60’s beginning in 1966 - 1973 and had a comeback in 1976. It had 53 issues.

The original series consisted mostly of Robin ,Wonder Girl , Kid Flash and Aqualad with many a cameo from other teens.

You can either read the OG Series but its completely optional it’s pretty outdated and silly but it’s a fun ride even then. In my opinion its best to leave for after you have been endeared to the character’s.

NEW TITANS

By this point they remembered that “hey these guys aren’t teens anymore ” and thus renamed it to NEW TITANS . This series started off well enough and quickly devolved into arguably one of the worst runs I ever read.

New Titans #81 is part of War Of The Gods and Annual 7 is part of Armageddon 2001 ( don’t bother ) annual 8 is part OF YET ANOTHER EVENT . Again don’t bother.

It’s pretty much highly recommend giving it up at #70 regardless.

The last decaying remains of New Titans walks on like a zombie on acid but by #100 all of the original new teen titans crew is gone ( well most Mirage Donna as a Darkstar ect are still there ) and leave to be replaced by an all new government sponsored Titans team lead by Roy Harper. It feels important enough to point out !

Theres a secret origins annual someone told at me about on twitter so ? Theres that too I suspect its the Secret Origins Annual Vol.2 #3 but I will read to see if not.

NT ended with a whole 11 annuals. A lot of crossovers and dip ins to be read side along Donna also shows up in darkstars alot and Kory in Omega Men and Cosmic odyssey its a whole thing none of its obligation.

Ok so I am aware that they aren’t strictly Titans series (it happens after NT ends) BUT PLEASE TAKE a minute to read

The Arsenal Special!! Its a short single issue and BRILLIANT !! It informs a-lot of his character later on as well as of course the actual Arsenal Miniseries.

ALSO THE TEMPEST (1996) a absolute must read also informs basically everything about Garth and arguably his best story ever … just take a minute and read these if you want !!

Lotta important stuff happens to Kory in Final Night #1 so thats there too!

(Theres also Kyles GL run which features Donna heavily when they were dating or DC Girl Frenzy Donna Troy special #1 or the whole 1996 NW run but they are more complicated and I am getting a bit off track) thats a whole another comic reading guide 😭.

Ok so in the 90’s DC decided to start the TT from scratch ( huh see how long this’ll last )

This all new team was comprised of 4 half alien teens and a freshly deaged Atom. It didn’t last very long and while I am VERY fond of it (look at my @ and pfp ) AGAIN you don’t HAVE TO read it ( PLEASE DO). Either way I am putting it in the red.

Around this time Infinite Crisis happens. A LOT of titans die and I feel as though you kinda have to read it ESPECIALLY for 1 death that will be very relevant and talked about. Also WW3 happens after and the titans are ALSO there and yet another one is killed though no one ever mentions it again.

POST - OYL TT 2003

Ok so I basically consider post OYL TT ‘03 to be a totally different team because… well it is . All of the NTT crew leave and are replaced by a handful of cameos and eventually like Rose Wilson and Kid Devil and because at this point half of the YJ gen is well…dead . It was pretty dire at this point though I find the character interactions endearing. This series remains like that until N52.

They have crossovers with Red Robin aswell as Wonder Girl Vol.2 .

If you know what happens in that book well you know that Roy ends up relapsing and going down a much darker mindset.

N52 . POST FLASHPOINT ERA.

The N52 was bad isnt a particularly outrageous statement but IT WAS EXTREMELY bad in relation to the Titans. Bluntly put none of it ever happened and the only titans ( TEEN TITANS ACTUALLY) that had ever existed were the TT2003 guys . Just them. Fab Five never existed. NTT never existed.And all of the other og TT guys were …… WALLY never existed. Donna was a one note villain Garth was a baby I think… Dick was …. There I guess.. ROY was a dumbed down alcoholic with no purpose other than to gawk at how cool and oh and ahh at Jason Todd . ( KORY …… truly just awful what happened to her ).

They have 2 series . Read at your own peril they’re better if you pretend that the characters aren’t supposed to be … like the characters that they are . ( scott lobbell shouldn’t of been allowed to touch a pen ) Raven isnt as bad as she could’ve been so I will give it that. But Lobell is a sexual harasser so if you are going to read it try and 🏴‍☠️.

You know 99% of all Nightwing fan’s problems can be fixed by literally allowing Dick to grow past his previous editorial decisions and allow him to explore new friend groups, new love interests and create his own unique family. That way we continue the trend of Dick growing into a better more stable person while looking back fondly on the stepping stones that got him there.

This constant relying on stories, love interests and side characters that debuted like 20-30 years ago has got to end. It’s literally turning the fandom into something so toxic that even I considered leaving Nightwing. Pandering to nostalgia gets you nowhere. Let Hollywood show you how well pandering is looking for them! The MCU was successful because of NEW content!

Both Marvel and DC have a history of their best content being content that is new and novel. Batman didn’t get popular until he underwent multiple major changes. The Batman today isn’t the same Batman as he was 20-30 years ago. So why is it that Nightwing is the character where he has to repeat his greatest hits instead of growing past it.

We say we want Nightwing to be Alist and that we want Nightiwng to be up there with Superman or Spider-Man, but then at the same time we don’t allow him to have any other friends, stories or love interests outside the titans or Batfam. And now it’s become a war between both franchises. Dick can’t even get stable elseworld content. He was with both Kory and Babs in Future state, main continuity and in DCAU all so they can appease the fandoms. It’s ridiculous.

Young justice was a breath of fresh air before that got overtaken by fandom demands. You know for all the problems the Batman Arkham Games had, it probably for me had one of the better representations of Dick because he simply got to be Dick Grayson. No ties to anyone but Batman and Robin. That’s what I want. I want more of Dick Grayson being free from restraints and making his own content away from titans and batfam. I don’t want Titansfam or Batfam. I want Nightwingfam.

Idc if Dick has to join another franchise to do it. Idc if DC has to start his own editorial to do it. I just want them to DO IT! It’s so sad to see a once great character with so much potential become the laughing stock of the entire community all because writers, editors and fans can’t behave and care more about their head canons and fanfics than they do good content.

Summary:

Gar is like a blessing. He doesn’t seem to notice the shiny parts of Vic, not until it really counts—when there’s wires sticking out, something shoved through Vic like it was nothing, when he’s in danger. And even then, he treats them like any other part of the body, like a wound is a wound and it doesn’t matter that it’s not flesh, but technology.

When he asks, Gar tells him about Cliff Steele, and shrugs like it’s nothing. “I’m just used to robot guys, I guess,” he says, flippant like he’s not the first person Vic has met who didn’t recoil at the sight of him.

Vic manages a laugh, his eye—his real eye, his human eye—stinging.

Nightwing rant

I just want Nightwing solo. Is that too much to ask for? And by solo I mean I want him to be somewhere where it's only him. Like, if its in Metropolis that's cool. Like if he joins the Green Arrow franchise, that's cool. I want his love interest to either be from another franchise, his own mythos or hell Ill even accept a completely new franchise for him to be involved with. I want his mythos to be unique to him. I want his stories to be about his villains and side characters. I dont want Dick to share everything with Batfam or Titansfam. I want just Nightwing doing his own thing with characters that we watch him grow with that matter to him that won't be erased by the next writer. I want consistency. I want him with the same love interest for 40 years, like Lois and Clark. I want him to get iconic storylines and villains.I want Nightwing’s mythos to matter the way Batman’s does.
