Constructive Criticism & The AO3 Comment Box

Seven years ago (almost to the month), I wrote a post about how to give Constructive Criticism - because I was tired of seeing friends get beaten down by criticism on their fics that had never heard the word ‘constructive’. 

I have passionately defended the idea that authors should NEVER get Concrit on fanfic unless they specifically ask for it - and that is a hill that I, as an author, will die on. 

Two and a half years ago - when I created the Fandom Playhouse Discord server, I updated all of my (at the time) 550 or so fics to have a specific set of notes at the bottom. 

Comments and Criticism welcome!

After a rather spirited discussion yesterday about the nature of constructive criticism, and I walked away from the conversation frustrated and upset (as did the other party), a point I’d made, and a question they had asked me stuck with me. 

Why WAS I asking for criticism? 

During the conversation, I’d had a glib answer, and dismissed the question.  But when my entire point circled around the fact that the AO3 comment box between two internet strangers who do not know each other is pretty much the WORST DAMN WAY to have a productive ConCrit discussion... why was I doing it? 

I didn’t have a good answer.

Pride as an author, maybe?  That I was willing to hear feedback, good or bad on my fics. 

An invite to haters, so they left other authors alone?  Because I would (and have) punch back if they came in with anon hate on my fics. 

Those are shitty answers.  I don’t have anything to prove to anyone, and I do this for fun, in my free time, and don’t plan on making massive edits based on feedback anyway.  So... why do I have it on my fics? 

Well.  Starting tomorrow, I won’t.  I’m going to do the work of replacing “Comments and Criticism welcome!” with “Comments and Keysmashing welcome!” on 632 fics.

At the end of the day, AO3 is an archive, not a writing workshop.

The comment box is anonymous - whether you have an account or not.  So is the writer alias.  The author doesn’t have the ability to detail precisely what kind of feedback/criticism would be useful to them for improvement.  The commenter has no way of knowing how to provide feedback in a way that will actually help the author improve.

Authors - if you’re looking for ConCrit to get better - put out a call for a beta so you can work together on something.  I’ll happily help you find one. 

Commenters - if you’re looking to provide feedback - offer your services as a beta to folks who might be looking for help!  A good beta is worth their weight in gold.

tl;dr - The Ao3 comment box is one of the worst possible vehicles for a concrit discussion that actually helps (and I have 11 years worth of posting fics on Ao3 to confirm this, lol).  We should stop (collectively) trying to use it as one.

Top 3 stupidest comments I've ever gotten on my fics:

- the hate comment I got on a 600 word gift fic saying there wasn't enough plot in it then ended with "but you'll get better as you keep practicing" as if this was baby's first fic, who then told me I had an inflated ego when I told them where to go

- the person who gave me grief about Ryou being 16 in philosophy because there's smut in it, implying I'm doing something bad/wrong/immoral for using the canon ages

- the time someone commented "guess I'll die waiting for an update" on absurdities because GUESS WHAT I FINISHED IT BITCH.

i spent almost a full day. that's- that's honestly wild. i think my 'latest' feat was 10k in 8hrs? so, it's not that far off huh. but genuinely, 35.7k in a month is crazy. where was this kind of commitment when i needed it for events lmao. there is 5 more months left of the year. that's going to be some crazy stats. though, i suppose it's not that crazy since i don't really edit or really think while typing? but like, it's still crazy, but not crazy crazy. right? but like, also, this is how i write most of the time? even my 'edited' fics are mostly grammar checks while the body stays mostly the same. is that good? is that bad? i have absolutely no idea

in my current stage as a writer, i don't know if i should be more deliberate with my wording or if i should stop thinking and just get to writing. i feel like i'm in a weird in between, and it's honestly... eh? that's the best way to explain it. not good, not bad, just unsure. like, i know i can do better, probably? that's always something to aim for, right? to be better

which, probably should be something i should think about because i feel like my writing is very stale and similar? but then i don't want to perfect my craft because it's supposed to be fun, but also i want to get better at it, but also i don't, but then i do. and it's honestly a cycle of i don't know what to do. fun fact, actually, these limbo thoughts are the exact reason i have not gotten a beta. i think i did it once? but it was, i don't know, not a beta where i learnt anything new? not saying it was bad, but ehhhhh. it just was. i don't know. one day maybe i'll get someone to beta my work and see what happens, until then, i will continue to hoard my editing (not for this account though lmao no editing here)

consistently writing for (i will just say a month) has been interesting, honestly. the people who know me know that i'm not consistent at all. and i would've probably quit this, or not even started had it not been for a friend just enabling me. it's an odd, yet rewarding experience for sure. for now, i guess, it's just a matter of seeing how long this goes for

aside from that, i do have to push myself to write different characters. i tried on the last couple days, but it's hard to step out of a comfort zone, i guess. this circles back to earlier. by now, i probably should be better at character voice and such, but i don't feel like i have it down. mostly smalletho, but even ranchers. people say they are fun, i've had people say they like it, some even said it's their favourite interpretation. but there is always a wall of separation, in a sense. i'm the first to say 'characterize the blorbo however you want to characterize them'. but the doubt comes every now and then

on the other hand, i wouldn't mind writing the same blorbos over and over. but i know i can't do that, because that will just speed up burnout. to be honest, though, it's just a matter of balance, which is something i'm not particularly good at. but we cope, we push on. it is what it is, and that's fine sometimes

anyways lol i wrote almost 600 words in who knows how long. i like my ramblings. here is to more writing days 🥂

Silence. It’s one of those things that feels inescapable, all-encompassing, yet void. I’ve lived most of my life in silence, but I remember what it was like before. The world used to be lively and joyous, but then silence wrapped its cold dead hands around me. It hasn’t let go yet, and I’m not sure it will. 

I think I miss music the most. Music was something that brought so much color to my life. Each moment could be marked by a song. I used to listen to music with my family. We would all sing and dance together and just have a good time. I can’t do that anymore. I’m alone in the silence.

What I crave is the sound of people. The everyday hustle and bustle. Passing conversations, laughter, crying, fighting, and joy. Joy has a sound and you don’t even realize that until you no longer hear it. The sound of someone’s slowing breath when you hug them. That’s joy. The sound of playful banter during a game. That’s joy. There is no joy anymore because it’s only me, the earth, and my dear enemy: silence.

At this point, I’m just waiting for death to take me like silence did. It’s already taken everyone else in this dull world. Why not me? Why did I have to be the last man standing?

As a child, you fantasize about what it would be like to be the last person on Earth. You would raid the grocery stores and eat whatever you wanted. You would live in the nicest house in your neighborhood and steal the biggest TV from Walmart. You could do whatever you wanted whenever you wanted. The thing you fail to realize when you’re a kid is that when everyone is gone, your life becomes bleak and lonely. Not only that but there is no one working so nothing works. I don’t have electricity or running water anymore. All the laptops and phones I could find ran out of power a long time ago. For a while, I was listening to the few records I could find, but I listened to them so much that they got worn and don’t work anymore. I’m so desperate to hear anyone’s voice. To feel anyone’s embrace, even death’s. But no. Death isn’t merciful. It left me in the hands of its sister, silence.

Next time you find yourself imagining being the last man standing, remember that you will never hear or see your family again. Remember that you will never go on a trip with your friends again. Remember that everything you rely on will stop. Not as fun as you had hoped, huh? That first week is fine. You get to live out that childhood fantasy of eating sweets for every meal and taking everything you ever wanted from the store. After that, the reality of it all starts to sink in. You hope and pray that someone will walk through that door. You don’t care if all they do is yell at you for doing something wrong, you just want to see someone. Hear someone. 

I guess if someone is reading this then maybe I wasn’t the last man standing after all. I’m sorry for leaving you alone, but I can’t stand to be in the company of silence anymore. It’s driving me insane. I can’t even hear my own voice. The narrator in my head died along with everyone else. If death won’t come to me on her own, I’ll bring her to me. I hope you don’t share my fate. I’ll be waiting for you on the other side.

hi everyone. guess who started a new semester of uni and was slapped in the face with 5pm classes <- me. lowkey been wiped, but ! i've got a couple of updates in terms of writing stuff:

my indecisive ass decided to write all the remaining 600 followers events into small drabbles, which will be released soon enough. i'll tag anyone who sent a specific ask in the replies, but. yes.

i'm also still working on that leech b'day fic sobs please bear with me, i promise it'll be worth it :'))

Weekly Writing Update #104 (June 30th, 2024)

Quick update, I'm doing my best to finish everything up before Forbidden Door starts so I can be a silly, lazy little wrestling fan for the rest of the night. Survived plumbing-mania the last week, and did get some writing in, so it's not all bad, I guess. Have to still start writing my charity fic, but that shouldn't take too long once I get moving on it. It's next on the list after I finish this… one top secret project I've been working on >.> I also have some drawing I need to finish up, so the week ahead hopefully will give me the time to do so. Around the 4th of July, anyway. So hope everyone enjoys Forbidden Door and I'll catch you next week with more word counts and rambling.

Life and interest update ramble that no one asked for: General

And I'll probably make more for a while on a variety of topics

So I've been having, not necessarily stressful, but stress induced couple of days. It's hard for me to pinpoint but I think it's me getting overwhelmed with things. Partly my fault because of dumb decisions I've made for the past couple of weeks, and it's called going through the Youtube comment section.

But that's not necessarily the worst thing. It's more of, me deciding to air out opinions abt online celebrities in twitter dot com more than anything 'cause stans are some of the weirdest people on earth and one of them tried using my age as a gatcha for telling them off for being parasocial about a bunch of people's relationship. But anw, that doesn't really bother me anymore 'cause the twitter side of that fanbase just proved themselves to be the worse kind of fans for literally trying to emotionally manipulate their CC.

BUT, other than that, I guess it's also the reminder that I'm running out of time.

Earlier this year I wanted to get myself "prepared" for coming back to school. I took another leave to take care of my sister this time. Around last year's April she almost died after a fatal allergic reaction to an antibiotic. It left her severely disabled so I had to help her out.

In effort of trying to "prepare" myself I tried doing "productive" things like drawing, gardening, language learning, or generally cleaning up more. Which honestly, not that bad. I always considered gardening as one of my healthy hobbies. Doing more art is important for my field in the future. Generally doing other chores like putting my clothes away and cleaning up make-up brushes will be beneficial for me in the long run. I tried relearning french although it was very little like idk colors and numbers and such, but it's honestly barely anything.

But by the time it hit April I just got burned out ? And I thought, okay I'll be more productive by May. But would you look at that? It's already the end of May. And I haven't picked up a stylus, pencil, gardening sheers, or even downloaded duolingo. (Although I also have theories regarding this part of the year 'cause my mood tend to start shifting around this period)

But other than those things, I also tried writing again around those months 'cause writing has been such a struggle for me for the past few years for some reason. Like I use to write a lot but it just got difficult for me. And I NEED to get good at writing in general, fiction or non-fic, because I'll need it for college. But hey, last night I was able to write 600+ in one session over a fictional piece and I consider that a win.

Another thing that should've been something considered productive that I've been putting off was signing myself up for a comprehensive psychological evaluation. It was something I should've considered earlier in the year but the idea of leaving the house to go to Manila was always troubling for me at that time. For the past year I could barely leave the house so I could look after my sister. It wasn't really that bad. I'm fine with staying around the proximity of our house. But this year she has improved a lot and could even go to the bathroom by herself. But even then, I kept holding it off and now June's coming around the corner.

I think it's partly because I have this mindset of "I'm better compared to last year since I don't want to die anymore" but even then I still have OCD symptoms. I also still have really bad anxiety from time to time and I tend to get paranoid too. All of this is bad and are still problems that do bother me every other day. And honestly, out of everything "productive" I need to do before the semester starts, this should have been at the top of the list.

So I should probably get to it within the weekend, at least. And not get distracted with other things. I really really need to do that.

“Over my dead body will I sign up for Tinder,” you warn as you sit next to Natasha, offering her a glass of wine. “I just don’t see this working at all.” Particularly setting the age range to 40+. You grab the stem of your glass, welcoming the dry taste of the drink. “If you do change your mind” she says as she gives you a plate of pirozhki, “I know what we can add in your profile to stand out.” Natasha nudges your arm after she sees you roll your eyes.

Later that night with your third glass now empty, you finish up your profile. 72 hours until approval.

Natasha sees your text. If I don’t reply in the next forty minutes call 911. Just when you’re about to grab the doorknob you feel Nat approach you, that dead set look in her eyes, unblinking. You think you hear some words in Russian. Shit. Pulling out your phone you click on the app, handing the device to her. She finally blinks, but you remain still, any attempt to read her face is useless and it feels like the minutes drag.

“I guess you didn’t need any help weeding out profiles. After all, I did suggest the wrong site.” Her smugness would infuriate you if Natasha wasn’t on full overprotective mode. “Are you sure you don’t want me to wait for you?” You shake your head. “Just text me once you’re done. Alright?” The reassuring squeeze of her hand on your shoulder quelling your nerves for a moment.

Until you meet him.

You’re aware how deceptive photographs can be, you’ve studied it, worked with it, played with it, seen how hard is it to get that good shot underneath the harsh lighting and the motion of the subject. But this? It can’t be replicated by a composition of pixels. He gets up from his chair when he sees you, a small smile playing on his lips, eyes not quite matching his expression.

“Hi,” you say, smile beaming, hands cold. You’re fucked.

He greets you back and grabs your hand gently, placing a kiss to your knuckles. You try to take a deep breath as you both sit. Calm down, he will not see through you.

“This is your first time.”

The hammering of your heart picks up again. You’re about to say some excuse about your supposed excitement when he continues…

“It is mine as well.”

“Oh thank God” you blurt out in relief. “It seemed like you’ve done this before.” Helmut’s eyes soften. “I fear I am not that well-versed with online dating.” You chuckle. “Trust me, you were not missing out. You’re lucky if you have an actual person reply and show up. Let alone if they match with their profile.” He leans closer, the scent of vetiver and cedarwood drawing you in. “My good fortune struck today then. I’m more than pleased to have you here.” There it is, that glint in his eyes. “I would say the same about you as well” you assure him. As the conversation continues you’re able to take your time to notice the things you missed before in your anxious state. To get yourself acquainted with the sound of his voice, that measured tone when he speaks, his accent adding a slight roughness to it. To think of what else that voice can do.

“Is my offer still good?” his fingers hover on the leather bound book. You mouth a yes as he slides the book to you, an envelope peeking from the pages. As your digits count each bill he retrieves the book, adding more “for the inconvenience of startling you.”

This time your smile is relaxed and his finally catches up with his eyes.

Does Bing gē Have Descendants in ‘The Untold Tale?’

This topic has come up a few times since The Untold Tale takes place in the PIDW universe (post-Bingge vs Bingmei extra), I figured I might as well compile and archive my official answer here for me to refer my AO3 readers to in the future for convenience’s sake. I hope everyone doesn’t mind. :) I’m always happy to answer questions!

TL;DR

Q: Will we see Bing gē having fathered children with his harem of 600 or so wives in TUT?

A: For TUT, the answer is a definite “no.” There were a lot of factors which’d contributed to my decision. I’ll try to explain my reasoning down below.

Context

In PIDW, it is canon that Luo Binghe has a bountiful number of descendants with his harem of 600-or-so wives. It is a detail that has been mentioned even in ch1 of SVSSS and in ep1 of the donghua.

I like to plan things ahead of time. So from very early on, I knew this would be something I would have to decide on whether or not to address when I’d finally decided to expand TUT from just a prologue into a full-blown story. And after contemplating it, I decided against adding children into the story. It is because 1) it would make the situation more complicated, and 2) it would take TUT in a different direction that wouldn’t be fun for me to write.

I’m a very decisive writer, meaning when I make my mind up about something, chances are I won’t change my mind. This is because I would have already planned it into my plot outline, which means changing a decision would require me to change other details in the other chapters I have planned for that story. (I’m typically not a spontaneous writer; I try not to write spontaneously because when you’re a writer who rotates through multiple WIPs with different characters across different genres or writing styles, you inevitably have writer’s block because you probably won’t remember all the ideas or the direction you had whenever you return back to a different WIP. To reduce this shortcoming, it helps me personally to have a plot outline. This way I can return to any WIP, read my notes and then transcribe them into legible paragraphs, find a way to transition between the story beats I have to hit for that chapter, and then eventually post the final draft to AO3 when I feel it’s ready.)

Having made a decision, I knew I had to set it up in TUT and give a “reasonable explanation in-story.” Hence, in ch2, we see:

Basically the set-up is TUT takes place post-Bingge vs Bingmei, but between “the third or fourth book” of the hypothetical PIDW webnovel series aka before Airplane wrote the fanservicey chapters where the luckier of LBH’s wives give birth to children during the harem drama plots and the children are probably rarely, if ever, mentioned again in the story as a lot of stallion novels tend to do.

Contrarian Tendencies

You know the saying: Monkey see, monkey do? In my case, it’s monkey see, monkey do not do.

A little fun fact about me as a writer: if I have already seen a fanfic where someone has already written a concept or idea into their story, chances are I will just avoid it entirely in my own stories. I don’t know why this aversion exists, but I’m assuming it’s because of my counterculture hipster inclinations and an intrinsic fear of plagiarism which has been beaten into all of our skulls since adolescence. There’s nothing wrong with being inspired by other people’s works. Technically everything’s been done before in writing so, as a writer, a good rule of thumb is to always try to give it your own unique spin on things. So for me, my brain somehow interpreted this a step further. This is a reason why I try to avoid reading stories from whichever fandom my WIP is from during the writing process of updating a fic, because this is how I get influenced. Once I see an idea or interpretation from another fanfiction, it influences me to not want to write it into my own. This is a very strong unconscious impulse for me. I guess this is just the neurons in my brain’s thinking that this way, it won’t be something my readers will have read before and the story idea will come across as different or fresh, and mine. In a way this is also how I show respect for fanfiction writers in the same fandom—by being inspired to not be inspired, ha. I like to think every story in the world serves a niche audience, so seeing a diverse range of originality and interpretations in a fandom is a good thing. This is also how I feel when I am able to identify certain popular tropes or depictions or patterns in a fandom; 99% of the time, it makes me feel a compulsion to “go against the grain” or write the opposite. For example, you have no idea how long it took me to come around the idea of incorporating the fanon “A-Yuan” into TUT. However cute it is, the moment it dominated the fandom (well, “dominated” is an exaggeration; it’s more like I’ve seen enough, especially in the Original LBH/ SY | SQQ tag), my gut reaction was to nope out of using it. But after seeing a lot of comments in my inbox with readers affectionately calling SY “A-Yuan,” I’d contemplated it for a long time and it wasn’t until ch4 that I decisively decided that yes, I can have Bing gē calling SY “A-Yuan” in TUT—but it has to be at the right moment for maximum dramatic and emotional impact. (See this thread that started it all. And this is the small sneak peek I wrote where LBH will call SY that for the first time.) <- This is the rare 1% where I actually conformed to what’s popular.

In this case, when I finally decided to expand the prologue into a full-blown story, coincidentally I had just recently read a good Binggeyuan (Bingyuan) fanfic which featured a kidnapped Shen Yuan interacting with Bing gē’s harem and LBH’s children/descendants. I’d liked their portrayal and even thought the children were cute. <- However, with me having reading this, the problem came up: I felt the familiar stubbornness in me rearing its head. So knowing myself, if I had included children, it is very likely the direction that I would have gone down for TUT would have been the opposite. To further complicate matters, you have to keep in mind the kind of writer I am. I tend to like grounding stories with a semblance of realism, no matter if the genre is pseudohistorical fantasy, romance, sci-fi, etc. And this writer has seen and read quite a few harem and palace intrigue Chinese dramas/ premises.

For further context, in those types of “historical” C-dramas^, in that sort of environment which fosters scheming, competition, jealousy, etc, it is almost expected to see heirs aka children aka descendants harmed along with the women. Innocent parties are often victims in these sorts of cutthroat premises, to underscore the underlying message the show or novel wishes to present. (See Ruyi’s Royal Love in the Palace. See Yanxi Palace. See The Legend of Haolan. See Nirvana in Fire. See The Rebirth of the Malicious Empress of Military Lineage. Etc.) And me being me, this would be the direction I would take. Remember, while TUT is meant to emulate a legitimate danmei C-novel reading experience in a fantasy world, I do drop pseudohistorical and cultural Easter eggs into the story. So trust me when I say you would not like the direction TUT would have gone down in, had I made LBH have children with his harem. I mean, theoretically yes, we could’ve seen endearing children characters from me, but you would have also seen me addressing a lot of the baggage that comes with (see Comment III Excerpt down below).

The situation with dissolving Bing gē’s harem is already complicated enough. As his romance with Shen Yuan develops, I didn’t want to have an additional headache thinking about how to address the issue of LBH having children already. Divorces in a pseudohistorical context is already a heavy topic—even more so when it’s divorces with children in the mix. Naturally I will still have SY and LBH eventually discuss the matter of legitimate heirs since LBH will essentially become the Sacred Ruler of all Three Realms and it’s a traditional precedent for an emperor to bed his empress, noble consort, and imperial concubines until he has his heirs (plural, because the rate of mortality was high in ancient China). In TUT’s case, at that point in the story SY will remind LBH that he’s essentially an immortal sovereign so there isn’t any need for an heir unless he wishes to retire. Furthermore, he will inform LBH that he could set a new precedent since he’s already different from the other emperors from history (with him being of half-Heavenly Demon and half-human cultivator lineage); as long as LBH is fully aware of all perspectives of the situation, he doesn’t necessarily need to conform to all traditions if this is something he really feels strongly about. But this future conversation(s) is likely the extent of it.

But wait, you say, what about a certain someone who’s going to be transmigrated as an imperial crown prince? Isn’t he going to be in that sort of vicious upbringing? <- Yes. But that’s an entirely seperate matter. In a way, since I’ve decided Bing gē will not have had any children or descendants in TUT, with Airplane, this now presents an opportunity for me to show the consequences of being one of the many children of an emperor with a harem of women vying for one man’s attention—and the power struggle that’d ensue in this kind of environment. It’s an interesting What-If parallel, if you think about it.

Because of seeing comments that have asked me for my thoughts on whether or not I will include LBH’s children, I’ve had so much fun seeing theories thrown around: from LBH’s blood parasites being able to control conception, to someone’s headcanon about LBH being a hybrid and all that entails scientifically (think: mules). I will say in TUT, it’s more the former since in PIDW he’s supposed to have descendants; we’re pretending Bing gē doesn’t have any yet (and now definitely won’t, especially after having heard SY’s “prophecy”) because he subconsciously does not want children due to certain fears, trauma, etc. And his Heavenly Demon’s “blood parasites” (blood manipulation) is a convenient story device to explain why no wife has gotten pregnant yet.

I hope this explanation makes sense! Mainly I just wanted to have this archived on tumblr so that I have this post to refer to moving forward.

On a side note: especially since ch4 had been posted, quite a few people have actually mentioned they’ve read my replies to other comments and/or I have seen different people having hopped onto other readers’ comment threads (for example, imagine my pleasant surprise when I saw a reader you lovely person, you helpfully jumping in to respond to another reader’s questions about TUT, and their answers were actually aligned with what I would’ve answered!), so it’s always such a thrill whenever I see this level of engagement happening. I can’t explain why, but seeing this happening is just so cute to me. It really makes this writer feel so warm and fuzzy inside!

i thought i would answer this publicly since a lot of people are still asking! First of all, thank you sooo much for your kind words, and I'm so happy you're liking BTR!! <3 Another update will be there soon, I'm just working on a few other projects right now :-D

So--this is going to be a long-winded answer, and I'll start at the beginning. Basically, when I first put the books up, I kept the link private and had people DM me for access. I also made it clear over and over that they were set to at-cost and I was not making a profit. I also ran a whole-ass charity raffle that raised $600 for Random Acts and spent a bunch of my own money buying and mailing the raffle prizes.

If someone DMed to request the link who had no followers or was brand new, I even asked for references to try and assure they were well-intentioned. Seems excessive (I know many thought it was), but there's history in the Destiel fandom of OUR OWN (and even well-known fellow authors *cough*) leading takedown and hate campaigns (including lies and slander) over profitless printed fic.

Either way, consider that even WITH these precautions in place, the links were reported and my account got bombed. Yes, someone DMed me, pretended to be my friend, talked to me, and manipulated my feelings just to report the links. Love this fandom!

Fortunately, there weren't any consequences for me, and not wanting those haters to win, I made a new acct and put them all back up, but obviously, giving out the link isn't an option. I was doing individual orders for a bit (I created a quote, sent a SS, the person paypaled me, I put the order thru), but there was so much interest that i wound up spending several hours a DAY coordinating and submitting each individual order, often times for people who were...less than patient about it. Again, for no profit. I just couldn't keep it up.

I wish there was a safe way for me to distribute the link again, but I don't want my new account deleted, and clearly, these no-life-having losers can't just scroll by. I also am not going to do the thing where I provide access to the PDFs for people to upload themselves, as a google drive can just as easily be reported, and I'm not risking my entire Drive. I'm also not comfortable with sharing the HD cover artwork done by artists who are not me in a PDF that people could do any number of things with.

Got put in the mood to do this the other week, and after trawling through all my AO3 bookmarks/FFN favourites, and then the archives themselves because I’m terrible and forget to save fics, here are a bunch of my personal favourites.  As always, only complete fics feature (there are many fantastic ongoing ones, but I’m lazy and don’t like having to update fic statuses).

This list is also long.  100+ fics long.  So it’s under a cut to save everyone’s sanity.  There’s also a spreadsheet version of it that I’ll make available if you wanna search by character/genre/universe etc.

Ratings are all using AO3′s Gen/Teen/Mature, so for FFN “K+” fics, I shoved them in either Gen or Teen, depending on my personal opinion.  Likewise, genres are done using FFN’s method for conciseness, so AO3 ones I just kinda guessed.  Only the major characters are listed.

how many works do you have on Ao3?

Discounting podfic on which I’m listed as a co-author, 24.  My concept writing doesn’t go to AO3 and the vast majority of my Narnia fic was never cross-posted there.  (Or reposted there, actually, I think most of it pre-dates the AO3.)

what’s your total Ao3 word count?

1,050,810.  oh, huh, I didn’t actually realize I’d passed the one million word mark (probably with Crown).

what are your top 5 fics by kudos?

all of these ended up being Star Wars, which is not a huge surprise.  Morning will probably reach Dirt in the next couple of updates, I’d guess.

Immutable, or, Five Times Obi-Wan Kenobi Compromised His Jedi Ethics for Anakin Skywalker -- this is not the oldest Star Wars fic on there, but I think it’s the second oldest. people just really like 5 times fic.

Wake the Storm - did you know that when I started Wake I assumed it was a very niche trope in what was, at the time, a pretty dead fandom? the kudos count on Wake actually outnumbers Gambit by more than 1600 kudos, so the number of people who go from Wake to Gambit is a lot lower than you might think.

Queen's Gambit - a significantly lower kudos count than Wake or Immutable.  Gambit’s such a weirdo of a story, tbh, I can’t be surprised by anything about Gambit anymore.

On the Edge of the Devil's Backbone - about 600 kudos less than Gambit, so less difference between Gambit and Backbone than between Wake and Gambit.

Dirt in the Machine - another older fic.  I’d rewrite this one if I cared enough to do so, because it’s not at my current standards (Immutable isn’t either, for that matter) and I kind of wince every time I get comments on it.  this is the first one of the top five to have below 1K kudos.

do you respond to comments, why or why not?

I’ll usually respond to direct questions, but I very, very seldom respond to comments in general.  This is an old standing policy of mine that’s now more than a decade old -- it used to be I’d wait twenty-four hours before responding, then I’d respond right before the next chapter went up, and for a while I’d only respond to comments on the first few chapters of a story.  Now I just mostly do not.  The reasons for this are: (1) many, many years ago, I lost my temper pretty badly at a comment on a fic of mine (this was pre-AO3, this was back in my LJ days), and after that I moved to the “wait twenty-four hours” response so I didn’t say anything without thinking about it, (2) I do go back and reread comments but I hate rereading my own responses, (3) I prefer to know the comments numbers on my fic are all from actual comments and not from me saying “thanks for reading!”, (4) I can’t take that kind of responsibility for answering every single comment, man.

(I can’t really remember before that.)  Maybe Backbone, because it ends on that pretty upbeat “yay team we’re going to be rebels now!” note.  or Devil’s in the Details (other side part 1), though I don’t really want to consider it a finished fic even though it’s technically finished; it has another “yay team we’re back together (minus Ezra)” ending.  I tend to end on complicated and reasonably open endings, not like...happy endings.

what’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

probably Gambit for the “everything is super fucked up” factor and also the fact that I never wrote the sequel. plus it ended with the entire Wake trio split up in a whole new universe, plus back in the Gambitverse Amidala not able to go back to Naboo, Ahsoka shunned, Palpatine’s new empire, Rex trapped in the Gambitverse, etc.

do you write crossovers?

I did in my Narnia days. I don’t anymore. Working in widespread fandoms like Star Wars or the MCU is basically like writing crossover fic within the same universe, anyway.

have you ever received hate on a fic?

*hysterical laughter*

...yes. yes I have. it’s the reason every time I get a comment notification on Gambit or Wake I freeze in absolute terror. people HATE Wake and Gambit.  I hate to say never, but I will probably never write those characters or in that series again.

do you write smut? if so, what kind?

not really?  I’ve done relatively non-explicit sex but it’s not something I’m super comfortable writing, especially in recent years. I’m much more likely to do a fade to black.

have you ever had a fic stolen?

I think Gambit got scraped once when it was still in progress and my response was something along the lines of “good luck, bro,” given the whole “still in progress” thing.

have you ever had a fic translated?

I’ve gotten a couple of translation requests but I can’t recall if anything’s ever been translated.  (Or if I responded to them...I know a few I forgot to respond.)

have you ever co-written a fic before?

Yes, back in my Narnia days.  Some SW concept writing and that ended so badly that I’ll never co-write again.

what’s a wip that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

gods, Dust in the Air, my Narnia Last Battle AU.  Back when I started it in 2008 or so I didn’t have the self-control or discipline I do now, even if I had a lot of the worldbuilding ability and the ability to conceive of if not execute long plot arcs, and I broke off more than I could chew.  If I ever went back to it I’d probably have to do a complete rewrite and it has the unique problem among my WIPs of being the last major fic I wrote in present tense -- I now write exclusively in past tense.  The bones of the story are good, I’d just have to go back to the bones and not just pick up where I left off.

what are your writing strengths?

Plot, worldbuilding/environment, action.  I also do genuinely think I’m very good at characterization too, but I think they’re all inter-related.  (Except the action, that’s me alone.  I love writing action and I generally get a lot of compliments on my action scenes.)  look, I know it’s conceited, but I’m good and I know I’m good, and I’m good in a pretty well-rounded way for the genre I write.

what are your writing weaknesses?

brevity. can’t do it.

honestly, there are others, but I don’t write stories where they’d come up.  I think I have a tendency to get to bogged down in dialogue in a way that I’ve never quite solved.  I also let my emotions take over too much and not in the good fannish way, in the “I’m having a fucked up relationship with canon or fandom and it’s affecting my ability to work” way.

what are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

please stop having your Asgardians speak Latin for magic, man, that’s my feeling on it.

okay, my feelings on it for me -- I’ve sprinkled bits and pieces of Huttese, Twi’leki, and tee-tiny bits of other stuff here and there in fic.  I’d not be comfortable doing more than that because the only other language that I really feel comfortable doing anything significant in is Latin, and even then I’d hesitate. also, like, Latin! not a language that comes up in the fandoms I write in.  even then, like -- any extended dialogue should be intelligible to the audience, and I don’t expect my audience to be able read anything other than English; I’d rather just say “they switched to Twi’leki to say” or something similar.

what was the first fandom you wrote for?

like, online? Harry Potter. for things that I didn’t post online because I didn’t know what fic was yet? probably either The 10th Kingdom or The Mummy.

what’s your favourite fic you’ve written?

On the Edge of the Devil’s Backbone.  I think it’s the best thing I’ve ever written, I think it’s the most tightly plotted, I think it’s got the best worldbuilding, I think it’s remarkably consistent thematically, and it was, at the time, a fic that I was very devoted to finishing or dying trying, because I was going through it at the time and some of it was connected to the fic.

Do you have any tips for getting more hits/kudos/comments/more attention in general for fics on AO3?

I don’t really know how I did it with Fractures. 

I guess I would say:

- Update consistently. If you write multiple chapters before publishing the first one on Ao3, save the others, don’t just post them all at once.

- Utilize the tags. Figure out good tags that people will want to look through. This is also true for relationships. Tags like “Zuko is an Awkward Turtleduck” and “Ozai is an Asshole” are always good ones, but also try to inclue more unique ones, as well, to give possible readers an idea of what your story is about.

- Write a good description. Seriously, this is one of the biggest things. Write just enough to get them interested, but don’t reveal too much. Just set up the story idea. If you’re going for a multichapter fic, write a slightly longer description. A one-shot description, though, can be short, sweet, and to the point. Don’t make your description too long. No one wants to read that.

- If your chapters are going to be short, try to publish more of them in the beginning in a small period of time. Most readers don’t want to click on a work with only 600 words that’s listed as chapter 1/?. Try to start your readers off with a good amount of content, so that they’ll get invested and be more willing to stick around.

- It’s always good to advertise your fics through things like Tumblr, too. Just post the link and the description, ask people to check it out and tell you what they thought. Try to spread it around a bit. Open asks so people can ask questions or clarification, and so that you can more easily engage with your readers outside of comments and chapter postings.

- Respond to comments, at least in the beginning. If you go back into the first chapters of Fractures, I used to respond to every comment. I don’t do this anymore, but it’s a good way to connect to your first readers, who often are the ones that will stick around, and who can also help spread the word about your fic.

- Don’t be ashamed to beg for comments. You are doing this for free. You want to have fun, you want to get feedback, and you want to make people have a good time. Go ahead, beg for the comments in the notes at the end. Surprisingly, it gets you a lot of comments from people.

- Be engaged and active in the fandom. Like I said before, take and answer asks. Post things. Reblog things if you don’t have any asks in your inbox. Go ahead and advertise. Everyone’s here in the fandom together.

- Don’t be discouraged when you don’t pick up traction in the beginning, because most likely, it’s not going to happen. Just keep writing. The more you do, the more people will click on it, and the more content they’ll have to read, and the more they’ll be connected on a deeper level to your story, and so on and so forth. Even if you get 10 kudos after working for days on your first chapter, just nod and write the next one. You’ll get there. It’ll be hard, but you will.
