I have Soo many things to say about Alina Starkov but today I just wanna ask wtf was her character arc supposed to be????

Like every other book she's continuously losing a part of herself/something/someone close to her......

Shadow and bone: she loses mal and the meek girl she was with him for the first half of the book. Then she loses her place in the little palace as Sun summoner. Then she "loses"/sacrifices the stag and control over her powers for a bit.

Siege and storm: she loses her "peace" with mal. The she loses "herself" but it's vaguely empowering?? Loses mal all over again but this time we cheer! Then finally she loses her role in the second army because Sasha takes over.

Cut to ruin and rising: loses her powers and hair color, the former for a hot minute only and then loses Nikolai and then at the end of it was finally supposed to lose mal once and for all but instead loses HER POWERS!!!

Anyway, dear reader, my point is Alina Starkov is the biggest loser to ever lose and I love her for it

The thing making me Feral about Judith Deuteros today is like. Her absolutely unfortunate attempt to declare martial law at Canaan House was the only thing she had to contribute. She is the ranking Cohort officer in this situation (she thinks) and like that's IT. In practical terms she's the weakest player there and she knows this; never mind the illest anime ill girl in the whole Seventh House and the three simultaneous greatest necromancers of their generation and Abigail Pent (at whom she is in any case strenuously not looking), Isaac could punt her through a wall. Silas is good enough at his terrible job that an actual Lyctor had to punch him out and then orchestrate that situation with the keys just to make ABSOLUTELY certain no one would ever listen to him. Judith is a competent melee support necromancer when in an actual melee. Judith can hold her own against Camilla Hect at ceiling chess even with a high fever, but Camilla and Palamedes and Ianthe are also there. Judith's cavalier is the glory of the Second House and their ability to work together is like... it's fine. It's professional. It's good. This is what peak performance looks like. It's fine. They're fine. Everything's fine. The hardware on her uniform is the only thing that's supposed to matter that she has and no one else does, that's ALL she has that she can imagine leveraging to get them out of here, and the way that works when your dad is the Fleet Admiral is that they give you everything you ask for and then you spend the rest of your life scrambling to earn it and she's not even very good at that. She has the charisma of drywall (affectionate/despairing) and all she can do to assert authority is fall back on the Cohort playbook and holy fuckballs did no one else in this bar actually care about that even BEFORE people started dying and all she does is completely discredit the actually pretty reasonable option of pulling together and trying to get out of this. And then Camilla Hect happens in front of everyone. And then the situation is REALLY losing cabin pressure and it's glorious last stand o'clock and her glorious last stand turns ugly and squalid and doesn't even help and she doesn't even get to die for it. She's the perfect product of ten thousand years of God needing cultural infrastructure for his genocide run against the rest of the universe, and she doesn't even get to Charge of the Light Brigade her way out. She doesn't get to die senselessly and prove to everyone that the rules don't matter anymore, because no one else ever really believed they did. She's so goddamn doomed by the narrative that it won't even let her die. Corona won't let her die. Blood of Eden won't let her die. MERCYMORN THE FIRST takes time out of a very packed schedule specifically to not let her die, not even long enough to come back wrong, how much more wrong could she get. She's the last kid left in Hamelin and she's opposite day Jackie Yellowjackets and she's a minor war poet and a virgin who can't drive and a wholeass Indelicates song and the most exhausted twenty-two-year-old in the universe and THAT'S ALL BEFORE NT9. every time someone says "an should have been vbs's leader" or "saki should have been leo/need's leader" i want to . slam my head through concrete. oh you missed the point so bad

1. the "leader" thing is kind of really fucking insignificant outside of where each group's story begins and promo materials. it doesn't mean one character is the "main character" of the group. project sekai doesn't HAVE a main character in the first place it's not that kind of story. each individual character is equally important to not only their group's story but the over-arching story of the whole game

2. leo/need's story begins with ichika because she is ultimately the one that brings them all back together. not saki. it is ichika's determination and frankly stubbornness that gets through to shiho and honami. like, saki was literally ready to give up on reconnecting with honami! (out of love and respect for her choices but like) if she was the focus leo/need would have been honami-less!! but ichika refuses to let it go. much like she refused to let go of their friendships throughout all of middle school.

when the story begins, we see ichika burnt out and hopeless. but that's only after years of trying and trying and trying and trying again to reconnect with shiho and later honami. this fandom does not understand ichika's character well . she's not meek and she doesn't back down easily she's not some like... fumbling "girlflop" she's incredibly driven and strong-willed. she lost some of that due to depression and isolation but as of leo/need's most recent arc ender she has pretty much regained her fiery spirit. she's leo/need's lead singer and MC for a reason

3. vivid bad squad's story opens with kohane because she's the only one who hasn't grown up/partially grown up on vivid street. if an or akito had been the "leader" we would have lost the magic of getting to know vivid street and its people and unique culture. it's all average every day life for them, but kohane is experiencing it all for the first time. it's only through her eyes that the audience can understand just how very special vivid street is

4. one more thing: you could say that the "leaders" represent the themes of each group and the general direction of their story arcs. vivid bad squad, among several other things, is all about improvement and growth and overcoming challenges and creating something new and finding a place to call home within a community. who better to represent that but the socially anxious newbie who never felt like she belongs anywhere and would never do anything with her life?

leo/need is about love and the ability to endure all hardships and preserve that love . it's about having a heart big enough to hope for the impossible and the willpower to make it reality. ichika, in all her hard-headed stubborn painfully persistent glory, is perfect for that.

similarly, mafuyu isn't nightcord's leader because nightcord is ultimately about healing. hope. finding a way to make life worth living again. these aren't paths he would have chosen on his own. he gave up on himself a long time ago. as did ena and mizuki, in their own ways. the best person to represent hope is the one who refuses to give up on anyone and stubbornly believes she can save them all

wonderlands x showtime is about moving forward to a brighter future and not letting the past keep you shackled in place. it's also about having lofty dreams and the selfishness to pursue those dreams. both of these things are why emu Isn't wxs's leader; she lacks that selfishness (i'm not using this word in a negative sense btw; i think being selfish can be a good thing. and sometimes being selfless is a bad one) tsukasa (and rui) has, and she often clings to the past.

and as far as more more jump and all their own themes of hope and never giving up go, of course their leader has to be minori. she brought three disillusioned, jaded ex-idols hope and reignited their passion! she's the walking embodiment of hope itself

Like. Ok. I fucking hate atsushi ohkubo I want him dead this is an established fact but it fucking BAFFLES me that mr terminally horny managed to write not only one of the best shounen female protagonists of all time (imo) but also have two female villains that are legitimately well written and threatening and aren’t some stupid “she’s evil because of a man” trope. Like maka? Wonderful protagonist. Love her dearly. Girlflop. Medusa? Literally just evil for the sake of it and incredibly competent and conniving. Arachne? Actually threatening and in charge of a massive organization.

& out of the side characters… Tsubaki has so much depth even if he dropped the ball on exploring her character more. Liz and Patty are both incredibly talented and interesting. Those three are all allowed to exist outside of the male character they’re grouped with. Iirc Marie is literally the only romance obsessed female character and that’s more or less a “I want to start a family and settle down” thing instead of a “I’m a woman so my primary goal in life is finding a man thing.” No we don’t talk about the fucking cat. Fine. Blair is powerful and competent when she’s not being the worst character in the story. I generally try not to think about her. And there are several other female characters in the supporting cast that are fairly well written (jackie, Kim, eruka) or are treated with the same level of respect as the male minor characters even if they’re not fleshed out (naigus, azusa).

It’s so fascinating. Ohkubo is so weird. Man is the world’s leading woman respecting misogynist. Guy who sees women as actual people but chooses to be grossly horny about it anyways. & then he somehow got worse with fire force but I’m not reading that anyways. Not praising him for any of this by the way this is like the bare minimum but it’s just shocking that it’s coming from him of all people.

He really plays up the "benevolent God" act Gatekeep: As a God, everyone is vying for his Favour and he is the one who gets to decide who gets it. He also doesnt share his knowledge of how to become immortal without killing your best friend. Girlboss: Literally made himself God. Never strayed from his ten thousand year old plan of Revenge. Rules an entire solar system and is colonizing more.

Jod is a frequent gaslight and gatekeep, however he falls more under the girlflop the girlboss. All of his plans go wrong but goddamn if he's not trying. Horrible ideas from an even worse person. Whent above gasligting and just straight up wiped his friends memories. Gatekeeping the knowledge of the universe. Had a child he didn't know about for 18 years and only found out cause she showed up dead(she's fine now(mostly)), girlboss move. Had a threesome with two of the gaslit friends, this would be less gross if he wasn't middle-aged. Gatekeeping the planets(I cannot explain this one). Ressurected humanity but also killed a lot of cows(girlboss). Put the soul of the earth in a woman and then put her in prison(but not before killing half of the amigos). Killed entirety of humanity and the whole solar system save a handful of billionaires and their victims, then resurrected the sun and a select handful of humans, wiped their memories, and established a religion in which he is god for over ten thousand years. Also an ex-tumblrina (probably) and goth twitch streamer (definitely).

Killed almost all of humanity, the sun and the solar system and then resurrected some of them deliberately without their memories and didn’t tell them that he killed them in the first place, and also told them that he was god. Renamed his friends after killing and resurrecting them. Set up imbalanced and toxic power dynamics among his inner circle that led to half of them either killing themselves or being killed by the other in each pair in order for half the group to become immortal saints, something he didn’t tell them wasn’t actually necessary to reach that sort of state. Lied to the surviving friends about why the ghosts of the planets in the solar system were hunting them, he told them they were after all of them because of the way they’d become saints which meant they could never go home, but they were actually only ever after him. Also because of this lie he was able to manipulate them into fighting the ghosts and dying in the process, saying that they would kill him which would destroy the sun, when actually they couldn’t kill him and also the ghosts were after just him so everybody would be fine if they just stopped hanging out with him (this is true in a LOT of senses actually). When he decided to get new immortal saints he specifically asked for the heirs of the houses, who were mostly younger in the 16-22 range and therefore easy to manipulate especially after killing their best friend (again, he knows that isn’t necessary and is asking it of a group of teens/young adults). When one of the people who was successful appears to have done it wrong, he pretends to be a mentor or father figure to her face (knowing that that is something extremely important to her) while having one of his surviving original friends try to kill her without her knowing he was behind that. On the girlboss front, I think he kinda thinks he’s a girlboss more than he actually is one, but he’s so good at the gaslight bit he’ll have you believing that too.

Daiba Nana

she isnt stuck in a time loop, the time loop is stuck with her. she beats all of her theater friends in swordplay so she can grant the wish of going back in time to experience her school's play once more. its implied shes done this for YEARS before the series starts. she can and has beaten the entire cast at once (see: wi(l)d-screen-baroque, a song where she sands on top of a moving train while singing a solo song and beating every single one of her classmates). she can and will bend the universe to her will of wanting to be with her friends. also her name translates to big banana and thats enough of a reason for her to win any completion

Ichika becoming hyperfixated on Vocaloid, that being the only thing keeping her going, Rui pushing people away and doing solo shows and inventing... how they love their friends so much and would do anything to keep them from leaving again...

I think Rui would engage in some kind of shenanigans and Ichika would follow along because it's something new and interesting and maybe a bit of her more reckless side she suppressed as a kid is resurfacing and and and I think they would so totally garden together and share flowers and their meanings

Sandy was a person who could easily comprehend herself. The leader kept a cold head at all times as she skateboarded through the hot sands of Treasure Vile.

It was no wonder why she was appointed as leader of the Desert rescue team. Others had envied the vehicle. They pondered; How does she never lose her cool? 

A question that never had an answer attached to it.

Sandy thought it would just stay this way, and she was quite fine with that outcome.

That was until she met a peculiar van. A sweet, kind girl. Everytime the van passed by; Sandy could feel her heart skip a beat. Everytime the van even said remotely hello to her; Sandy felt her face heat up completely, often worrying the ambulance to whatever she was down with a fever.

Everything had changed for her. And this time the leader who had usually a way to comprehend situations with ease;

Couldn't even comprehend herself.

“What do I do!” Sandy cried. “I just completely shut down whenever she even flashes a look at me!” Sandy buried her face into the comfort of her own arms. A metaphorical purple miasma emerged from Sandy, causing Droney to sigh dramatically.

“Jeez, you're such a hopeless romantic sometimes!” Droney shook his head like a disappointed mother, even when he was younger in age. “Get a grip of yourself! You're never going to get a chance with her if you continue sulking.” Droney huffed, placing his hands on his hips.

“Although, Droney could be nicer about that..” Keaton cleared his throat. “He's.. sort of right, sorry.” Keaton rubbed the back of his head sheepishly.

“What do I dooooo..-- Wait, what if she doesn't even like me?!” Sandy slapped her hands on cheeks, panicking over the worst possibilities that could unfold.

“Calm down!” Keaton exclaimed, placing a hand onto her shoulder as comfort. Anything to make the worrywart shut up. “You're not going to get far if you just keep overthinking,” Keaton rubbed his chin, trying to think of a possibility to cheer up the poor girl.

Then, it was almost as if a light bulb shone over his head.

“So why not hint at your feelings for her?!” A sparkle of excitement glimmered in Keaton's beady eyes. “You're such a sweet person, she'll like you for su–”

“Wh-What?!” Sandy (very) loudly yelled at such a daring suggestion, much to Keaton's dismay. “Are you crazy?! That's– way too bold!” Sandy cupped her cheeks. She felt the warmth of her cheeks radiating against her palms.

“C'mon, dude! Get a grip of yourself!” Droney rolled his eyes, groaning. “Sandy, you're our leader!  Surely, you can show signs of wanting a relationship with her?” Droney smugly smiled. “Or.. are you just too much of a scaredy cat to do it, huh?” The young drone mischievously chuckled.

All of Sandy's panic washed away almost immediately. She despised being called a scaredy cat. She felt almost challenged. “No way!” Sandy stood up, glaring daggers at Droney. “Y'know what, fine!” She transformed into her vehicle form, quickly heading off towards the direction of brooms town.

“I'll prove to you that I can do this!!” Sandy shouted proudly. Her voice slowly fading away as she drove further from the two.

“Hey, that work–” Droney was met with a direct slap on the back of his head.

You can do it, Sandy.

Confess your feelings to this beautiful girl, how hard can it be?

You're a leader of a team, there's no need to be scared!

..But what if she doesn't pick those hints up?

“Gosh, what did I bring myself into..” Sandy whined silently to herself as she was getting closer to Broomstown. Now that she was just minutes away from the town, she couldn't help but feel panic inject in her veins.

“No, no!” Sandy shook her head profusely. She can't turn back now! “I got this–”

As soon as Sandy turned up to the port, a very.. very peculiar van called her name.

A van with the cutest siren shaped like an adorable bow, a girl with a smile that was brighter than the sun itself; a true beauty.

“Sandy! Ah, it's been a while!” Amber exclaimed with glee.

Oh my god. 

Ohmygodohmyohmygodohmygod.

Sandy immediately lost the confidence she had just gathered. Her heart raced faster than the fastest police car in town. She felt like her cheeks were set on fire. She gulped, just how was she able to tackle this?

Ah, I know! Just simply say hello back. Sandy thought.

“U-uhm, uh..” Sandy muttered out only stutters. “H-Howdy! Amber, hi!” Was what she managed to spit out.

Sandy silently screamed at herself. She mentally (and physically) cringed at herself at her words. Who in the world says ‘Howdy’? She was the leader of the Desert rescue team, not some cowboy!

“Howdy, huh?” Amber giggled. “Howdy to you, too!” A cheeky smile pulled at her cheeks. She adored to tease Sandy at times, she was overjoyed when she found out there were also other female rescue vehicles out there.

Sandy managed to keep a squeal within her. God, saying she was adorable was an understatement. “Haha,” Sandy sheepishly maneuvered her tire. “I-It's funny, isn't it? She cringed heavily at her stutter. However, she was somehow managing a conversation with the girl of her dreams! Sandy had to admit, she had to pat herself on the back for that.

..Even if the conversation was so painfully awkward for others to bear.

“Soo,” Amber looked to the side, seemingly in thought. “Would you like to go around the town with me? You never had a chance to see what our town's truly like!” Amber smiled warmly.

“W-What?!” Sandy's eyes widened, but she quickly comprehended herself by clearing her throat. “I-I mean, yes! Of course!”

Sandy couldn't believe it. Could this be her chance? It must be! She can't screw this up now, can't she?

“Very well! Then it's settled.” Amber steered herself towards the south gate. “Follow me! I'd love to show you our headquarters! Perhaps we can even hang out there a little, hmm?” She giggled, already driving off.

“A-Ah, wait for me!” Sandy quickly followed suit.

The two drove through the lively forests of Broomstown. Considering spring had already started, flowers were already blooming and full of color at this point of time.

“Woah..” Sandy's mouth was slightly agape. She was so accustomed to the dry environment she had been living in. The sandy dunes were all she knew, so this was a whole new experience for her. “It's really pretty.”

“It's amazing here when it's spring!” Amber transformed, picking off a flower from the ground and bringing it closer to her nose. “They're all so pretty, and smell amazing too.” Amber hummed.

Sandy was more mesmerized by Amber than the most beautiful flower can do. She adored on how sweetly Amber had been rambling about the flowers, it was such an adorable feature. Sandy averted her eyes towards the other line of flowers. They were softly waving through the breezes of the wind.

Most of the flowers were less of color, a contrast to the bright green grass.

Well, one flower stood out.

As on cue, a pink flower stood proudly in the middle. Sandy had noted that the flower was practically overflowing with petals. It was a pretty sight to please one's eyes, Sandy had to say.

This flower seemed so familiar with the girl. Sandy had pondered on the question; The name of this beauty of a flower.

Da..

Dah..

Dahlia!

That's right! Sandy had read in a book about flowers once. Naturally she was curious over flowers, as the only flowers that had ever sprouted in the desert were only flowers growing on cactuses.

Sandy had connected the dots together. The flower reminded her of no other than Amber.

A flashback occured. Sandy had remembered Keaton was once rambling for what felt like the thousands of times about Camp's many travels.

One peculiar time he was talking about how flowers had meanings. A flower may look pretty on the outside, but it has a blossoming personality from the inside. That was the true beauty of a flower.

Ironically, he had also spoken about the meanings of a Dahlia.

A Dahlia symbolized;

Beauty. A factor Amber's looks already had.

Eternal love. Amber's love for everything around her was one of the many things Sandy had adored.

Inner strength. Even in the most dire times, Amber had pushed through. No matter what was thrown at her, she managed to stay on the path of determination.

Dignity. Amber had always kept herself on the right track, she was a gentle soul.

And lastly, kindness. One could theorize Amber had invented the word kindness by how sweet the medic was.

This was her chance. And Sandy gathered the courage by handing this flower to the girl of her dreams.

Amber was about to walk into a further part of the forest, but paused her steps when Sandy called out her name.

“Uhm, Amber!” Sandy's voice trembled. She was nervous, but she wasn't going to give up. “Before we go to the headquarters, I-.. uhm, want to give you something.”

“Oh?” Amber raised an eyebrow, turning to face Sandy directly. “A gift? How lovely!” She clasped her hands together gleefully, excited to whatever Sandy had in store.

Sandy plucked the dahlia from its row. With a seeking feeling in her heart, she gently moved the flower into Amber's hands through the gaps of the medic's fingers.

“It– reminded me of you.” Sandy looked down towards her feet in shame. Was this too cheesy of a gesture?

Although, Amber had thought differently about the gesture. A soft gasp escaped her mouth, but then a slight flustered giggle followed after.

“Sandy.. Do you like me?”

“H-Huh?!” Sandy's head rose up from the ground, her face red as a beet. She waved her hands around, desperately trying to find an excuse to counter Amber.

“Hush, it's okay.” Amber reached one of her hands out, intertwining her fingers with Sandy's. “I like you too.”

Sandy's eyes widened. She didn't speak for what felt like a hot minute. So many thoughts were rushing through her mind, but none of them were able to form a coherent sentence.

“Did you know?” Amber raised a hand towards Sandy's cheek, brushing it softly. “Flower language could say so much more than any word any one has spoken. I knew what you were doing there.” Amber's cheeks were slightly flushed, but a soft loving glimmer reflected in her eyes.

“Amber.. I–” She couldn't believe herself. She had done it. And the girl of her dreams, a girl she thought she could never achieve;

Liked her back.

“Thank you.” Sandy smiled softly. It was a development from the nervous smiles she striked whenever she spoke to Amber.

“No need to thank me. You're the one who gave me this beauty, didn't you?” Amber giggled. “But you're more of a beauty to me!”

“Awh, shucks..” Sandy's cheeks flushed once more. She was surprised anyone had ever said such romantic words to her.

“Now,” Amber lent a hand out. “Shall we? We can't keep them waiting to get to know you better, can't we?”

Sandy stared at Amber's hand for a moment before leisurely placing hers onto it. “Yeah, let's go.”

And now, just like a flower, something had bloomed.

A beautiful relationship blossomed. With this blossoming of a relationship, the two shall now venture through the stages of their newly found life.
