This was made with the original set but it didn't quite fit with the other comic. But I still wanted to try and include it somehow.

maria and tick were way cuter than i anticipated. then we have good ol' tim still holding a grudge for the ratatouille incident. despite everything he still wants tick onii-san to notice him 😔

here's a compilation of doodles i made after finishing volume 7 of Baccano! had a lot of fun drafting these up, so i went back and colored everything. Ronny is a funny guy. showing up to the function and just kicking back. thanks man. knew we could count on you.

Hi Itsu! For Infinite Blue it's basically just Mystic Messenger because I hadn't really played any VNs/otome games before MM 😅

In general relevant storytelling inspirations for me are Tim Burton/Henry Sellick, Studio Ghibli and anime series like Full Metal Alchemist, Fruits Basket, Baccano, Cowboy Bebop, and Monster.

Writing wise it's a bit all over the place, but I love whimsical stuff like Howl's Moving Castle (the book), mysteries like Agatha Christie novels, and horror like from good old Steven King. I do enjoy genre hopping, both in reading and writing.

Music is also a huge inspiration! Thanks for the question :)

i'll start off with my regular disclaimer that i generally tend to make these posts based purely on vibes and while i may not be correct in my assignments (only time will potentially tell) i generally am doing my best based on what i've seen on you/your blog.

that said, the very first character that popped into my mind for you was maiza avaro --- an alchemist from the 1700s who bears the burden of knowing how to make the liquor of immortality and the guilt of knowing that he essentially caused the deaths of many of his colleagues BECAUSE of this immortality. for the bulk of the story, which is set in the 1930's, maiza generally tries to put distance between himself and this past, but he's still pretty haunted by it since one of the people who died because of his choices was his somewhat-estranged younger brother (also because the demon he summoned to GET immortality is just kind of, like, sitting there chillin with him). anyway, just based off the fact that you write and enjoy caleb this was my most logical leap of character enjoyment.

i do like to give a few bonus "maybe, maybe not" assignments though that are less based in actual reasoning and more based on just potential vibes. anyway, those are: czeslaw meyer, mark wilmens, nile, and maybe tim.

Crowley Fact Sheet

Name: Dire Crowley Role: Headmaster Age: unknown Height: 185cm (taller than Vil/Idia/Crewel, same height as Leona, shorter than Sebek) Homeland: Unknown Hobby: Traveling Favorite food: Wild game meat

According to the official fanbook Crowley’s first name, Dire, has been retconned to be pronounced as “Dia” in order to be closer to “Diablo”, the name of Maleficient’s bird in the original Sleeping Beauty movie. I also came across a fan theory that the name “Crowley”, might be both a reference to Diablo and to early 20th century English occultist, magician, poet and painter Aleister Crowley, but this is unconfirmed.

Crowley hires the player to fill the role of “beast master” and keep Grim in check after being impressed by the player’s ability to goad Ace, Deuce and Grim into working together to take out a monster in the prologue of the game. In return, the player is permitted to live in the abandoned “Ramshackle” dormitory on campus.

While Crowley insists that he is still searching for a way to send the player back to the world from whence they came (claiming that it is all he thinks about when he sleeps and eats), it is difficult to tell how much effort he is actually putting towards this goal.

Crowley has explained that he likes shiny objects like gems and precious metals, and thus the mirrors that he carries about on his person.

In other voice lines he says that he wipes down the frames of the portraits of the Great Seven in his office everyday, watches Spelldrive tournaments on television late at night and that he does not like spicy food.

He has also said that, “To create whatever magic you wish to produce, you need imagination. Some mages say that they practice drawing and writing in order to strengthen their ability to make their imaginations more concrete”.

Crowley often meets with Trein for tea, but has said that Lucius makes him uncomfortable and he is not very good with cats. Despite this apparent camaraderie with Trein, he was once ten seconds late to a meeting and Trein lectured him for ten minutes as punishment.

He says that while he greets every student he sees every morning, sometimes they ignore him, but he doesn’t mind as it is part of being an adult.

He often leaves difficult situations and problems up to the school’s students to handle rather than facing them himself, claiming that it is to cultivate their independence; the students, by and large, do not trust him as a result.

Crewel describes Crowley as being very busy and always hurrying off to deal with one issue or another, but it is unclear what he is actually up to most of the time. It is commented during the Halloween event that he seems to have secrets that he would prefer the police not know about.

He seems to have a soft-spot for money, receiving a portion of Azul’s profits from Mostro Lounge and—according to Jamil—arranging for Kalim’s belated enrollment in the school in exchange for large monetary donations from Kalim’s father.

On the other hand, in the Port Fest event half of the profits earned by the student food stalls are donated to Crane Port, and Crowley arranges for the remaining half to be divided amongst the students themselves (at Azul’s request).

Crowley's voice actor Miyamoto has been voice acting since before many of us were born. He was inspired by a favorite TV show to become a teacher, but failed to acquire a teaching license.

In a 2014 interview he said, ‘I would love to play a villain or eccentric role that is far removed from myself, like Tim Curry in "The Rocky Horror Show’.”

He is the voice of adult Simba in the Japanese-language-dub of Disney's The Lion King, the voice of Soma Ayame in the original release of Fruits Basket, Roger Smith in The Big O, Hubb Lebowski in WOLF'S RAIN, Jean Croce in GUNSLINGER GIRL, Maiza Avaro in BACCANO! and other characters in over 170 other anime series, OVAs and video games.

ahh baccano, one of my old faves. I will answer as anime/light novel

My rating (1-10) anime: 7/10 - super fun and the dub and music choices are excellent, but the anime lost a lot of character depth and the dialogue sounds a bit stupid. the action and animation was good for 2007 but the off-model shots in the ova bring it down. light novel: 9/10: I can't rate the novels accurately because I've been in love with it for so many years but I always found the plots, character arcs, writing style, originality, impeccable structure and planning, and illustrations magnificent. I used to do a yearly reread but I lost steam a while ago. must say the portrayal of samsa was awful in both versions and in general narita has no idea what he's talking about when he tries to address antiblack racism in america. besides that, his treatmenf of racism in the novels overall feels very shallow and awkwardly done to me. but I do love his enthusiasm for mob movies and stuff, it really shines through and I always enjoyed his perspective and portrayal of new york. to the extent that I got excited in hs when we visited the city, lol. ah I miss my baccano liveblogging years

My favourite character: chane, claire, jacuzzi, nice, and firo/really hard to choose between all the incredible characters but my favorite character for only her novel appearance is ennis, and my favorite novel-only characters are probably rail (nonbinary traumatized scarred arsonist rly hit me) and nile (heart eyes)

My least favourite character: poet is rly annoying :/ christopher without fail is deeply hateful but only in his first appearance? after his first book he's fine. also I do not like novel firo lmao he's a better character with a lot more depth but he's a homophobic misogynist and he pisses me off. tim is boring. also renee fuck her. anime ladd is even worse than novel ladd and that's saying something

The character I think I’d be friends with: everyone would be friends with isaac and miria :) otherwise...hard to say. I'll go with nile because he's very straighforward and sincere like I hope to be and also he's very hot. oh and niki :( niki my girl. and chane and ennis too!

The character I think I won’t hit off with: FIRO. actually most of them tbh everyone is off the walls ad I would be afraid for my life

My favourite episode/scene: RAIL TRACER REVEAL/*googles novel titles* Grand Punk Railroad obvs, The Slash, Crack Flag is slightly messy but struturally brilliant, uhh for scenes I don't remember too many specifically but anything with claire and chane just makes me melt even tho they are slightly problematic. end of grand punk railroad with jacuzzi too! the anime got some of the greatest scenes from the novels in imo

Whose clothing style I like best: anyone in the 1930s arc plus monica. I LOVE 1930s style especially with the caps I think they're so neat. nothing in the 2000s I really disliked that arc. it contains every trope I hate for married couples and for romantic plots. even though I think it was rly well done and I love illness and the Reveal is Very Good

Times I watched it (and if I would again): 5 or 6 times?/ at least 5. idk if I'd watch the show again I kind of have it memorized and I like the novel plot more. I will definitely read the novels again we're just waiting on those last two books.

for anyone reading, I want to note that the baccano anime is extremely gory and contains depictions of torture, including child torture, fantasy cannibalism, child abuse, and gun/knife violence*

the light novels contain all these, plus fictional cults that abuse children, suicide, references to sexual assault and child sexual assault as backstory, and joking references to incest (thanks, 2002) - this is not comprehensive, it's been a few years. it's an intense series so stay safe if you're interested. I think a lot of the assault and cult topics are used for shock value tbh.

Favorite anime: Haikyuu!! I love it! (Although Mob Psycho 100 holds a special place in my heart!)

Least favorite anime: I wouldn't say I exactly have a least favorite as if it doesn't interest me I just don't watch it, but when I was first getting into anime when I was around 16/17 it was because my friend was showing me a bunch of series that were popular then. We watched season 1 of Attack on Titan, we watched a few anime movies, we watched Fruits Basket, but I remember she made me watch two shows I really didn't like at all: Hetalia (we watched the movie and I thought the concept of countries as people was really interesting but the actual execution was kind of... Offensive and just surface-level stereotypical humor when it could have been so much more interesting), and another one which I've literally never seen since but there was this robot girl? I can't remember anything else or what it was called but it was very strange

Last anime you watched: I just finished Run With The Wind! (And I'm still super emotional about it :'( )

Favorite anime movie: Ohhhh it's so hard to pick! I don't think I can say just one! For a few years The Girl Who Leapt Through Time was my favorite; then I watched Perfect Blue and I'm a big thriller/horror fan so I loved that! But then I also love Your Name and 5 Centimetres Per Second and The Place Promised in Our Early Days and just about every Ghibli film! (I recently watched the English dub of The Cat Returns with my brother and we were crying laughing when we realized the king of the cats was Tim Curry, I don't think I've ever laughed so hard at a film!) If I had to pick one I guess I'd go with Howl's Moving Castle but I would feel like I'm betraying so many other great movies!

Anime you cried hardest at: Okay, so I've watched a ton of sad anime like Your Lie in April and Anohana and A Silent Voice buuuut they never made me cry, and I think it's because I knew they were going to be sad going in (either because they'd been advertised that way or because someone recommended them to me and told me they'd cried watching them). Having said that, I bawled at Your Name because going in I knew nothing about it other than the basic premise of body-swapping and expected a full on, light-hearted romantic comedy throughout, and even though it wasn't that sad I was not anticipating the emotional punches at all!!! In terms of non-movies, one that made me well up a little recently was A Place Further Than The Universe, again because I went into it only knowing it was about a group of girls who want to go to Antarctica and did not expect some of the more emotional scenes! (Side note: Ever since I watched it, I've been getting loads of adverts for trips to Antarctica come up on my phone and laptop, so if anyone wants to get a ragtag team together and go off to the South Pole hmu)

Your comfort anime: Asides from Haikyuu it's probably Naruto (the original series, not shippuden) or Ouran High School Host Club, they were two of the first anime I watched by myself and they both feel very nostalgic for me, occasionally I go back and watch a few episodes just for fun!

Favorite anime character: dhjdjsbdhe this is too hard! Pretty much every Haikyuu character? If I had to say one it would be Bokuto! I feel like Akaashi is the character I relate to the most, and I would love a best friend who is as exuberant and fun as Bokuto! His enthusiasm is excellent and I'm trying hard to be more like that! I also love Rock Lee from Naruto, again pretty much every character from Mob Psycho 100, oh and also I liked a lot of the characters in Baccano and Durarara, I can’t believe I haven’t mentioned those animes yet but those are other favorites of mine! Also Haruhi from Ouran High School Host Club and the main trio from Samurai Champloo! I’m sure there are loads of others I’ve forgotten but yeah!

Shojo or shonen: Shonen by far (nothing against shojo, I do like some, it's just that like 90% of the shows I like are shonen)!

If you could shift into an anime universe, which one: I mean, I don't want to die so that rules out a significant portion! Probably a Ghibli universe so my food can look like that 😊🍲 or maybe Run With The Wind, I'd love to go back to university (I mean, I technically am at university but everything is still closed... Would love to go back and join as many societies as I could, although I'm not sure about a running club)!

So basically I've seen a good mix of things. I love animated things, anything that is funny, stupid, or has a good story. I grew up on Disney, Cartoon Network (Adult Swim), and Nickelodeon. I didn't have cable so a lot of what I watched was on the weekends at my nana's or when we would record tapes and brought them home. We owned so many movies, and honestly I'll never grow up so anything meant for kids, I probably have seen or currently watch. If it's even somewhat popular or trendy then I try it out and see if I like it. Even with some of these I watched I didn't like them all (I know, shame on me).

I'll give you the basics of me, as best I can. I am opinionated, but not really into politics. I never really grew out of my childhood, I am easily entertained, meme's are a simple joy of mine, and I love to watch old vines. I was introduced to YouTube by Oni, and she started me off with the best: NigaHiga, = 3 (Ray William Johnson), Anna Akana, and eventually Markiplier, and so on I grew my own likes; VizziePop, Collegehumor, Buzzfeed, Pewdiepie, Boyinaband, Prince E, TheOdd1sout, Jaiden Animation (Oni's find), FailArmy, so on and so forth. I like astrology, and my sign is Tauras. I loves food, cooking and baking is a side hobby, and I'm into all the nerdy stuff like reading, drawing, role play, and gaming.

Notes for YP’s release of Vol 6

With the YP translation of 1933 <First> The Slash - Cloudy to Rainy- out, I’ve gone through and compiled some notes on the release. Originally posted on Reddit. Under the cut due to length.

(Disclaimer: I'm working off the electronic version for Kindle rather than the physical copy, since I won't have access to the physical copy for three days. If anyone in the meantime notices significant typos in the physical copy, share via a comment).

We already knew from the summary that Yen Press was going to write Larvae as the singular Larva, so the two main points of interest going in were whether or not they'd spell the name of Tick's younger brother as Tack (the fan-translation name, closer to the romaji) or Tock (in-step with the traditional English onomatopoeia).

Here to report that they've translated the younger Jefferson's name as Tock, which is surprising to probably no one. @sean-gaffney

Also, they've written Adele as Adele, not Adelle (which wasn't the main fan-translation name, but was used here and there by fans back in the day). I am relieved.

Whereas the fan translation of the character list describes Dallas as simply "trash," he gets two words in the Yen Press translation: "human scum." Heh.

I don't think I pointed this out in my brief write-up of notes for the volume four release, but Yen Press doesn't italicize Tick's elongated/drawled words, it just stretches them out a bit. So "yeees. I'll do my beeest" rather than, "Yeees. I'll do my beeest."

The fan-translation has Tick more formally refer to his step-father as "father," but here Yen Press just has him use the more informal "dad" instead. "Dad's aaall washed up" rather than "Father's aaall washed up." I'm not entirely sure how I feel about this yet; I did like the formal "father" since it implies respect, which is a small but characterizing point the narrative wants us to understand about Tick. He loves his stepfather, but his stepfather doesn't love/care about him. Using a term that inherently carries respect helped to reinforce that, I think.

On the other hand, the more informal "dad" can similarly come across as more affectionate, I suppose. And, well, I guess I'm okay either way. After all, the main thing that conveys Tick's feelings is that he's using father/dad rather than "my stepfather" or something like that. He fully sees the clockmaker as a parental figure.

(Although...Tock/Tim does refer to the clockmaker as "Dad" too, so that tempers that last point.)

Tock's pet Jimmy is described as a "white rat" in this, rather than a guinea pig (which is what the fan-translation used).

So, in the Prologue: Only Child section, the fan-translation had Maria refer to her grandfather as "grandpa." The YP translation straight up has her use Abuelito, and I'm curious to know if the Japanese wrote out Abuelito in katakana or if it just used the Japanese term. She does use abuelita later on in the fan-translation, which I would normally take to mean that abuelita was specifically spelled out in katakana. I may not *know* Japanese, but I can check the raws to look for katakana I can read, at least.

Funnily enough, Maria's grandfather uses an American idiom in the YP translation: "They get smeared with blood and fat, and they lose their edge before you can say Jack Robinson." That idiom's very American. I wonder if the translation should just be taken as a liberal one here.

Maria actually uses amigo and amiga when referring to people in the YP translation, by the way. I mention this only because the fan-translation for this novel doesn't made the gender distinction and uses 'amigo' in all instances. Also, the 'amigo' and 'amiga' terms aren't italicized in the YP translation.

Dallas' thoughts/dreams prior to waking up in the SoHo hideout are italicized in the YP translation. They weren't in the fan-translation. Italicizing them makes a lot of sense.

One thing that I've noticed thus far with YP translations of Baccano! is that they're a little more conservative when it comes to using swear words/vulgar language than the fan-translations are, and I was wondering how they'd write Dallas "Human Scum" Genoard, coarse as he can be.

...Well, he calls Ennis a "bitch" in the YP translation as he does the fan-translation, but calls Firo a "punk" instead of "fucker." (Also, he describes Isaac and Miria as the "cake eater" and the "skirt" in the YP novel. Amazing). Dallas has a "hit list" in the YP translation rather than a "shit list," the latter term I was admittedly quite amused by in the fan translation.

I guess the main thing in the end is whether or not the coarse, disrespectful tone Dallas uses comes across in the YP translation as it did in the fan-translation, and - yeah, it does. Sure, the vulgar language is a lot more scaled back in the YP translation, but the general language definitely still paints him as crass and insulting.

Yeah, looks like YP may be having Maria use a little more Spanish than the fan-translation: she says "Lo Siento, amigo" to Luck in Chapter 1 in the official translation (O.T). but just "I'm sorry, amigo" in the fan translation (F.T).

So when Miria insults Firo in Japanese (touhenboku) and later hopes he is kicked in the head by Yagyo-san, the F.T. takes the time to actually provide translation notes for both words. The O.T. doesn't. This was the case for the older novels, too, and I still think that's a shame. Translation footnotes never did anyone harm.

From the O.T., presented without comment: "Miria laughed happily, her eyes sparkling at her beau's bright idea."(Bolding mine)

Oh, okay, so take these two lines from the F.T.:

(Isaac, on the Genoard manor) "It looked pretty much like my house from the outside, so I had no idea it'd be this great inside!" (Miria) "Ah... You're right! It did look just like home!"

Verus the O.T...:

(Isaac) "It didn't look much different from my folks' house on the outside, so I didn't realize it was such a nice place!" (Miria) "Oh... M-me too!" (Jacuzzi) "Huh? ...I-Isaac, Miria... Y-your families' houses...?"

Well. So the O.T. makes it more explicit that Miria's home was just as fancy as Isaac's was...and the implication that Isaac's home life growing up miiiiight not have been the best is more direct here, too.

Fan translation readers, you know how a plot point of 1933 was that Isaac and Miria wanted Firo to pay by having him literally say uncle? Bizarrely enough, the O.T. is translating the whole "say uncle" phrase as "say gyafun" instead. Directly. I mean, the phrase is 'explained' by Isaac in the text, at least...

When Maria enthuses to Tick about her love of slashing things, she uses the word "slash" in the F.T. versus "cut" in the O.T..

In the F.T. Tim just refers to Huey as "Huey," but in the O.T. he uses "Mr. Huey" instead.

Ronny's catchphrase continues to be translated as "well, never mind" instead of "Well, no matter" and I continue to be in pain.

Tick's sitting up on the floor when he grabs Dallas' wrist, by the way. It wasn't as clear whether he was recumbent on the floor or sitting in the F.T., but the O.T. makes it clear.

Nice's smoke bomb produces a white smokescreen in the F.T., but the O.T. describes the smoke as "murky gray."

The Linking/Connecting Chapter starts off with italics for Tim's thoughts unlike the F.T.. Again, the italics are appropriate.

That's about it for the main notes. There are a couple of passages whose translations I'll contrast in a separate comment, and I may end up editing this main post if I think of/come across more to add, but that's it for now.

On a personal note, Narita says in the July 2004 afterword that Jin Shinonome's four-panel manga Four-Panel Jackhad dealt with Baccano! (as a parody/joke content) in page 29 of the home page issue of Dengeki, and that the 1933 story is actually a continuation of that. Narita says this:

So those of you who read the Dengeki home page probably caught this, but…this story includes the continuation of a four-panel manga drawn in Jin Shinonome’s Four-Panel Jack, published in the home page issue 29. That’s right: I’m treating all information drawn in that Four-Panel Jack as fact. Ha-ha-ha, well, you know, he toyed with my story, and I couldn’t just let that lie, so this time, I toyed with his work, as payback. Thank you very much, Jin Shinonome, and also, I’m very sorry.

And so he'd asked his chief editor, “In the next Baccano!…could I maybe treat those four-panel jokes as if they were actual fact, not jokes?”

Now I need to find that manga in question. That's quite important. I had no idea that Vol 6 was partially inspired off something like that, because the fan translation didn't translate the afterword.
