Day 12 - Jan 12 - Vienna

fuck I’m tired

Woke up at 4am

But someone was up being SO loud at 2am

Left the hostel

Got an email the bus is delayed 40 mins

So I stayed at the hostel another 45 mins

Got on the bus and some girl was in my seat so I sat next to her and I somehow fell asleep the entire ride. Luckily we had wifi!!

Vienna is CLEAR SKIES and SUNNY - what a wonderful surprise 😊

I felt cruuuusty when I got to the hostel. It was so warm, so the fact that I was wearing so much, I was sweating and just felt gross. I paid, dropped off my stuff, changed, and started walking.

My only plan today was to go to the Natural History Museum and then see the other stuff. First stop - coffee. I had noted Cafe Museum or Phil in my notes so I went to Phil only to find that it was CLOSED. But I had saw Cafe Museum when I was walking Naschmarkt, so I went there. It’s a well reviewed Austrian restaurant/cafe, but I just got a slice of cake called the Mozart torte and a melange, a Viennese coffee consisting of a long pour espresso and foamed milk. Basically a cappuccino? Idk. It was delicious and the server was so nice. We made some conversation about my travels and he mentioned he had been to Sweden 5x and loved it, he loved the Nordic countries.

I felt caffeinated and happy after that, so I walked to the Karlskirche church and the fountain wasn’t on so I just tooo some quick photos. From there, I just started walking into the city center to see the churches, library, monuments, and kohlmarkt (big walking street with lots of designer stores). It was gorgeeeeoussss. I died 😭

After I saw everything I bookmarked, I decided to book it to the Accenture office, but when I got there, I realized they didn’t have any visible sign that said it was the office and I didn’t wannna go inside sooo on to the next place! I went to these stairs that I marked. They were just stairs. Like slightly nicer but nothing like the SF stairs. Silly Daisy.

From there, I walked to the Beethoven House, which idk what it was, but if I remember correctly, this was where he lived when he studied at the university?? Idk, but I walked by the university lmao

After that, I started looking for the NHM - my phone was on like 5-10% battery this whole time, and I had to pee, so this was a tad bit stressful. There’s a lot of construction going on around the city so it was a little confusing to navigate. Also idk if this is a permanent thing or bc there’s construction, but they have these thick pipes or tubes that they’ve hung above ground, like probably at the height of a one story building?? Idk what it’s transporting like air or plumbing or what but I’m like bruh this is so ugly, is it bc the city is too old to dig underground?? Idk

Anyways, I bought my ticket to the NHM and once I looked at the map I realized, this doesn’t include city history and idk why I assumed it would, but Prague blended it’s natural history and city history together so for some reason I made the same assumption?? But it’s still a cool museum and THIS ONE HAS DINOSAURS. YAYYYY

After the museum, I wandered around Brudgarden and the town center area until I slowly made my way up to Cafe Landtmann.

(Disclaimer: I don't play with the Terrain cards, feels better without 'em.)ġ: Legendary Asia - Kinda my favorite just because there's nothing that annoys me, and all the twists are simple good ones. It doesn't feel like the fairest version, but it always makes me smile. you live in japan??? when did you move there lol and are you asian? (sorry if this sounds weird im just planning on moving and i want to know around what age you moved and if you were alone)

Not anymore haha :D I moved to japan in 2012 (year after the tsunami), and I worked there for 4yrs on a teaching visa and got to do some pretty bitchin’ stuff while on contract xD I wasn’t alone, it was a huge freakin’ group of us from the Los Angeles consulate flying out together, like nearly a plane-full (it was a government job and the application took about a year to process and had multiple stages including interviewing at the embassy in LA with U.S. and japanese officials).

And NOPE! I am a slice of lightly-toasted whitebread with blonde hair past my buttcheeks! xD So if you’re asking about being stared at, you don’t gotta worry :) I’m something of a walking spectacle and I never felt particularly stared at. I lived in Fukui prefecture (SUPER countryside like I met old people who’ve never left the prefecture and also never saw a foreigner before O_O) and I always felt like I was at home it was awesome. I’m a big nordic woman too and I often went to the onsen and also never got stared it (or i am TOTALLY oblivious so idk... we went back last year and it was normal as ever). I LOVED it tho, I plan to retire there lord willing. Guess which apartment was mine AHAHAHA Also this is where I used to ride my bike. Cherry blossom season was fuckin’ bomb yo.

But yeah moving there was my first time out of the country, my first time on an airplane, and my first time living alone. I was 26 and a total shut-in but this isn’t about my traumatic childhood AHAHHA but i wish i WISH i’d known about the program and moved out of country sooner, like early twenties, i feel so cheated.

I will absolutely talk anyone’s ear off about my experience in japan or give advice about moving abroad (including how to file your taxes and what areas to avoid and how i almost beat the shit out of a pervert harassing my kouhai outside a pachinko parlor xD) if anyone would like any advice :) I lived in both japan and australia, on different visas, am a freakin’ master of knowing what essentials to pack, and also what apps you might wanna download for either of those countries etc etc, and i’ve flown a considerable shitton and know when is cheap to buy (both plane tickets and currency). And my thoughts are a little scattered at the moment but like I know a lot of job options and visa conditions and shit, and just like, programs people might be interested in in terms of living abroad or even just getting out of state, so feel free to ask either on PM or however :) I’m a well-traveled resource and I pick up skills and certifications like stank on... a buffalo idk lololol! :D

Day 2 - Walk 22km per day and dance the night away to balance out the pains-au-chocolat

Have you ever felt anxious? I did today. The ticket registration at our home metro station, Campo Formio, was not working so we did not register our tickets. I never ever use public transportation without a ticket in Riga, and in Paris, after hearing many horror stories about security guards, cameras and big penalties for riding without a ticket, I was scared until the very last moment until we saw the light of day in Monmartre. All turned out well so I think I can now shyly say that I actually managed to use the Paris metro for free.

Accidentally we arrived in Monmartre at the time for the catholic mass. It was an amazing experience. Three priests, the choir singing and people praying - it is not something you get to see in such a popular landmark. And when you see so many people praying there at the same time, it’s magical. 

Afterwards Paris surprised us with its distance again. You can easily walk back to the Centre Pompidou, the to Sciences Po, then to Jardin Tuilleries and then come back home to the 13th arrondissement without even getting completely exhausted. I have never walked so much around Riga because everything feels further there. Here it’s easy. 10 minutes walk and you have another landmark in front of you. Maybe that is the booster needed to walk. Altogether yesterday we walked 22.2km, which is not a crazy amount, I would like to walk even more, but my legs still do not feel tired. I’m wondering when that will happen.

Although I had been at Centre Pompidou a few years ago, I remember it quite different. To be frank, I remember only me not enjoying it very much and having huge queues there. This time we managed to buy the tickets in 3min time and then walk through all expositions in like 2 hours time. A bit of a rush but it was still a great visit.

However, la Tour Eiffel played me very well. From Monmartre you cannot see la Tour Eiffel, I thought it was more to the right than the view includes (as it also turned out to be in the end). When we were walking at the sightseeing platform at Centre Pompidou, I couldn’t find the Tour Eiffel either so I started to brag that “the myth that you can see the Eiffel Tower from any spot in Paris is complete bullsh*t”. Well, in the case of Centre Pompidou it wasn’t true, because you can see it from there. Furthermore, you can see it very clearly. Nothing is far in Paris, that is the key. If you can see it (and you can) you can walk there.

After going back to the school and seeing many unfamiliar faces, we went to Jardins Tuilleries to meet my roommate Sorina’s Moldovan friends who are studying in Lyon. Not only they were amazing people to talk to (they are aware of history of Latvia and of our language group, which is not a usual thing for such small country as Latvia) but they showed as the Musée de l’Orangérie. It is a quite small but very concentrated art gallery full with both classic and well-known painting as well as beautiful artworks that cover the whole room. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not an arts guru as my mates seemed to be, but everything was very enjoyable and that’s the most important part.

When we got home, we started to prepare for the Boat Party that Sciences Po was organizing. We could have started getting ready an hour later because the party started 40 minutes later than expected. Everyone was standing outside of the boat and mingling among themselves while serious guards were standing before the entrance. While waiting for the impossible to happen (or the party to start) we managed to meet several Taiwanese and American students, a Finnish student, a Romanian student, and so many more people that it was a great exchange. The party can start later if we can meet new people anyway.

Usually people from the other side of the globe simply do not know where Latvia is and I am aware of such situations. A fun thing happened when I tried to explain to two French students in English where Latvia was. When I mentioned the Baltic States, I heard one of them whispering to the other that I am from the USA. When I corrected her in French and said that I’m from Lettonie, they understood immediately. And why wouldn’t they - as it turned out, one girl’s mom was from Poland. And we’re almost neighbors.

Actually that is so funny whenever you meet a person from Europe, especially Nordic Europe, you already feel like you’ve met a neighbor. Finland, Norway, everything counts. They know where you come from, maybe they have even visited your country, and you feel like you have met someone who’s at least coming from the same side of the globe.

However, the older I get, the less I enjoy club-like parties (good luck, Marta, enjoying the one you are going to tonight haha). It’s so crowded, you cannot even communicate with people, you just have to dance with people jumping on your feet and bumping into your head. C’est la vie at a big university. And don’t even think about knowing the people you see! I’m kiiiinda missing my SSE Riga parties where you know everyone and you greet with everyone. Here it’s none. 800 Bachelor exchange students and even more French students. What can I expect, of course, but I miss knowing people. But probably the best parties will be more fun since I will know more people and (hopefully) they will also not feature 400 people on a small boat. Imagine the biggest SSE Riga party and put it on the “Vecrīga” yacht. That’s what you get. Many people, big mess and no opportunity to talk to anyone or to dance in a bigger space. Luckily everyone was understanding about the lack of space and it was possible to have fun up until 3pm until we both got really tired. And the taxi driver offered us chewing gum. I am still not sure whether we were stinking or he was simply nice but that’s left to rest unknown.

Ticket to Ride has a ton of expansions, each adding not only a new map but new gameplay elements.

Each works essentially the same as the base game. Pick up cards or place cards. But new twists are added. In Great Britain you must invest in technology in order to enter certain parts of the map. Some European maps require you to build tunnel and ferry routes. In Pennsylvania you acquire stocks in different railroads as you build. Nordic Countries is specifically for 2-3 players.

God Morgen from Trondheim, Oslo. A solid 10 & 1/2 hour sleep after being awake for almost 48 hours.

Yesterday, I took the train from Oslo to Trondheim. I refused to sleep on the train because it was undeniably the most scenic train ride I have been on yet. The moment I stepped outside after the 6 & 1/2 hour ride, I was so thankful that I came prepared with winter clothes. An average of 50F, wet, humid, cold and rainy. Not my typical vacation destination but my goodness is it beautiful. Canals throughout the town that have colorful buildings towering down the waterways, overlooking the collections of boats that line the banks. A fisherman's town.

Upon arriving, I quickly made my way to the ticket counter to reserve a train for the small town of Bodo, another 700km North in the Arctic Circle. Unfortunately, the trains were sold out for the day, meaning I had to find a place to sleep. Vermund, the billeter, mentioned there were trains leaving the next day, Friday. I told him I'd be back after I did a little bit of planning. 20 minutes later, the trains were full until Sunday. Woah. Okay then, reserve a seat for me please on Sunday and I'll be there.

Although I was prepared for the weather, I was exasperated from being awake for so long. I have had this burning desire to camp and fish in the nordic, primitive country of Norway but the timing just wasn't right. I swallowed my pride and searched for an AirBnB and found the cheapest and most comfortable rate I could find; and to my surprise, I found one quite simply. Marielle, she responded within two minutes or less. She gave me directions to her home and how to get there on the bus. (ooo, now I get to learn how to take the bus system).

*Side note: My uncle traveled around the world in the 90's and early 2000's. We were talking about how he traveled before cell phones. As much as I DO NOT rely on my phone in the states, it is truly my life line when traveling. In reality, I will survive without it, but my goodness does it make everything easier.*

Back to say hi to Vermund. "How do I purchase a bus ticket?"

His response, "You need to download the application. Here let me help you." I asked, "I cannot just pay on the bus?"

"No, you need this application. It's what all the locals use"

Okay then! Well, the application doesn't like any of my credit or debit cards, doesn't use paypal and no one accepts cash... I guess the bus is free for me. If someone does regulate it, I am more than willing to pay in cash and show them the problem with my phone.

All in all, phones are necessary today. How interesting.

Upon arriving to Mariell's home, I almost missed getting off the bust at the LAST stop because I fell asleep on the bus. I was so tired I didn't even want to go get food but I knew that my sleep would feel richer if I had warm food in my belly. The weather was still cold, rainy, windy. She opened the door with a big smile and welcomed me into her warm, clean home. Her, her daughter, Moon, and female cat, Pablo, were all nestled on the couch watching some television special about the legacy of "Prince". I felt like a piece of homeless trash walking into a family home, dirty, stinky, tired, hungry and a little defeated because I didn't have the energy to find camping. But they didn't seem to mind or even notice.

Mariell brought me to my room for the night, her other daughters bedroom; who is out of town with her father for the summer in Nepal (How fucking cool). Walking into the bathroom, I saw 10+ medals for running. Marielle just runs herself around the world (How fucking cool). This mother who is alone with her daughter just welcomed her home to me less than 2 hours ago to some foreign stranger, yes we both have good reviews that are posted publicly and can read one another's...but again, how fucking cool!

After bathing, I reluctantly went to into town to grab some food and dozed off on the ride there and back. The first restaurant i walked into was FANCY. Fresh herbs growing in a green house inside the dining room. I wanted to eat the air it smelled so good. Fuck it, the menu looked divine but the host wanted me to sit in the basement because the bar is for drinking, not eating.. Well, I'm not spending $100+ to sit in a cold, dark, basement.. After wandering around for 20 min or so I stepped into a little Vietnamese restaurant. Okay, white rice and veggies... Note to self, it is possible to screw up vegetables. Just eat something local...
