hey this may be a stupid question, but it's already been a long time since ive read trk so i don't remember everything properly, so can you explain to me why exactly ganseys behavior in the book is seen as problematic??

hey! don’t worry, there are no stupid questions in my book. in fairness, it’s not about gansey’s behaviour in trk, it’s about his behaviour throughout the whole series. most of his problematic actions all come down to the same basic flaw: self-centeredness. for all that gansey is a generous and loving person, he can’t help but make everything about himself. he is driven by anxiety to define his place in the world beyond his privilege, yet he is blinded by that very same privilege - a bad combination, and one that leads him to show very little empathy for the people he loves.

like many teenagers, he’s looking for affirmation from his friends... but then resents them for not giving it, while failing to see that (most of) his friends are dealing with traumatic issues. when his friends reject his input - because it is not what they need or want at the moment - gansey always, always takes it personally. at no point does he try to ask himself, okay, if this isn’t what my friends need, then what do they need from me and how can i be a better friend? instead, he goes straight into self-pity mode, complaining that his friends reject his support and walk away from him. thing is... it’s not real support if it only makes him feel better and not them.

i don’t really have the time to write an extensive meta on all of the interactions where gansey’s lack of empathy comes into play, but here’s a list of just the most glaring ones in the series, in no particular order:

gansey consistently tries to pay for adam’s way and persuade him to move in with him, even though adam has told him multiple times that he is uncomfortable with it because independence is key to his sense of self as an abuse survivor. sometimes he does this even when he’s fully aware that it will start a fight. despite that, adam is usually the one apologizing, at least on page

notably in trb there’s a scene where gansey tries to get adam to move in with him, but when adam asks what’s going to happen if gansey leaves henrietta - is adam just supposed to drop out of aglionby and follow him? - gansey doesn’t reassure him that’s not gonna happen. he just says adam will have to start again at a new school. 

as i said above, this is not true support because it helps gansey feel better without inconveniencing him, but it is not what adam wants. if gansey wanted to support adam, he’d at least promise he would stay in henrietta for their final year of high school, instead of expecting adam to follow him around the world.

when adam rejects that offer and says he’ll stay in the trailer park, gansey takes it incredibly personally and his first response is to victim-blame adam for his abuse, saying things like: “you let your dad pound the shit out of you. you’re as bad as [your abusive mother]. you think you deserve it.” when adam still refuses to move in, and tells him, rightfully so, that gansey doesn’t know what it’s like for him, gansey follows that up with “don’t pretend you have anything to be proud of”. this is past mean and straight into cruel.

adam is the one who apologizes after this fight. let that sink in.

when thinking back on ronan’s suicide attempt, it is strongly implied in the text - and was made explicit in deleted scenes - that gansey appears to have taken ronan’s suicide attempt not just as a traumatic event, but as a slight against him, and is always vaguely guilt-trippy when it comes up (i.e. you promised me you wouldn’t get suicidal again)

gansey does illegal things on ronan’s behalf, multiple times, without ever wondering if this is what ronan wants, see: bribing school officials to keep ronan in school when ronan explicitly wants to drop out, because staying in school is what gansey thinks he should do. even if gansey’s heart was in the right place (i believe in staying in school), he is essentially involving ronan in illegal dealings against his will.

gansey is happy to share his search for glendower with the others, and delegate tasks to them (adam especially) as long as they do things his way. when adam acts against one of his decisions, gansey is absolutely unable to let that go. and while i understand that he is hurt by the breach of trust, because adam went behind his back, his language is telling: “i did tell him that we were to wait, right?”. you don’t “tell” your friends what they “are to do”. that’s not an equal relationship. 

this is also seen in the way gansey acts with ronan in more of a parental role, actively ordering him about. you know there is a problem when an outside character refers to ronan as “gansey’s dog” and neither gansey nor ronan disagree with this.

there’s the infamous hospital scene in trb, too, which has been excellently analysed in this meta post by @bleachersmp3 and @mericatblackwood, but i’ll say a few words about it anyway

in this scene, adam has just been beaten into losing his hearing. he has just come out of the hospital, bruised and traumatised, and has been told he will now have a permanent disability as a result of his abuse. he is now also homeless, because by pressing charges against his father to protect ronan, he has ensured his parents will kick him out for good. so he is forced to move into monmouth - something we have been told from the start of the book he absolutely did not want, because it was critical to his sense of self not to depend on gansey’s wealth. so, he’s bitter about it.

and okay, that’s not entirely fair, because it wasn’t gansey’s fault. but if your friend had just undergone such horrific trauma, surely you would be a little lenient, and understand they’re not being objective atm, right? well, not gansey. instead, gansey launches into a tirade at him: “what is your problem, adam? [...] is there something about my place that’s too repugnant for you? [...] I’m sick of tiptoeing around your principles!”

when adam snaps at him that he’s being condescending by using highbrow words (we can assume that this is a discussion they’ve had before, because adam tries to get gansey to use more everyday words multiple times in the book, especially when it’s clear that blue doesn’t understand something, so it’s something gansey already know adam finds condescending), gansey goes straight to victim-blaming again, this time with a classist twist thrown in: “i’m sorry your father never taught you the meaning of repugnant. he was too busy smashing your head against the wall of your trailer while you apologized for being alive.”

gansey does not apologize at any point after this fight. 

when adam sacrifices himself to cabeswater - which he does explicitly to stop whelk from murdering one of them and save gansey - gansey takes it as a slight against him, because it goes against what he told adam to do, and sadly asks adam “why? was i so awful?”, showing he has completely misunderstood adam’s reasons. adam tells him, and not for the last time: “it was never about you”.

it clearly doesn’t sink in bc they have the same discussion in the dream thieves, when gansey again asks him why did he go to cabeswater against his orders. he does this in an emotionally manipulative way, too - implying that ronan and blue both think badly of him while gansey has been defending him so adam owes him. adam again tries to tell him “it wasn’t about you”, which gansey refuses to believe, and reminds adam that the glendower search “belongs” to him. adam replies that if gansey wants adam’s help - which gansey relies upon frequently, as it seems like adam is assigned a very large share of research and coming up with ideas - he needs to treat him as an equal

after the fight, when adam has a mental breakdown due to the combination of stress, ptsd, and magically-induced hallucinations, and is found wandering along a highway, clearly dissociating and undergoing amnesia, gansey is still so bitter about their fight that he contemplates leaving him behind in dc, so that “adam will have to apologize for once” (for once???)

consider all this emphasis gansey puts on how much adam betrayed his trust; consider that gansey then spends nearly two books seeing blue behind adam’s back (starting in tdt, through bllb, and halfway through trk)

consider that despite the fact adam takes the reveal gracefully and thanks gansey for his honesty, when adam later in trk is honest with gansey about his feelings for ronan, gansey’s immediate reaction is to assume adam is using ronan as a sexuality experiment and warns him not to break ronan’s heart, because ronan is just so fragile and adam is just so cold

consider that the only basis gansey has for making this assumption is that “adam has hurt him (gansey) so many times before”, but never stops to think about his own responsibility in their disagreements, or whether he ever hurt adam 

as you can see, the vast majority of these are in the first two books, with the exception of the “shovel talk” in trk. i would like to say gansey grows over the series, but i think unfortunately it’s more to do with the fact that starting with bllb, the plot is split between gansey/blue and adam/ronan, so gansey just doesn’t get as many interactions with adam and ronan (he’s still bribing school officials on ronan’s behalf though, including selling monmouth which at the time is where ronan is also living). 

gansey isn’t a bad person, and doesn’t (always) mean badly. he does love his friends. unfortunately, his refusal to see things from anyone’s perspective but his own makes him a toxic friend on a great number of occasions.

10 Dance Vol. 6 Special Edition overview

Volume 6 of the 10 Dance manga was released in Japan on March 18th, 2021. As with volumes 4 and 5, there are both regular and special editions available. In this post, I will provide an overview of the release, including observations on changes that were made to the chapters compared to how they were printed in the magazine, plus summaries and select scans of content from the special edition booklet.

It is often the case that when chapters come out in the manga magazines, they aren't always fully polished, and since I became highly familiar with this run of chapters from the summaries I made, several things immediately jumped out at me as I went through the book. First of all, though chapter 29 was split into two parts and released in subsequent months in the magazine, these two halves were combined into one chapter, with no indication they had ever been separate. I assume that they were always intended to be one chapter, but since the full chapter was not completed before the deadline (and it was a month when 10 Dance was being given the cover image, so not possible to delay its release), it was simply split over two months instead.

For visual changes, the most common alteration was scenes that originally had little or no screentone having it added in:

There were also some instances of either slight panel redraws, or complete replacements with new panels. None of these were from particularly important scenes, so it could just be Inouesatoh or someone on her team didn't like the look of the original panels and wanted to change them. The following example has a bit of both, with Suzuki in the upper left corner being replaced, and his eyes being redrawn in the lower panel:

Personally, the most amusing addition I noticed was when Max was thinking about throwing a party. Originally, we didn't see what he was envisioning, but in the volume, an addition has been made in the background: the New Year's piece Inouesatoh drew with sexy men dressed as cows, except now they're bunnies!

As for dialogue, it appeared to be almost the same in both versions throughout. Some minor exceptions include a spot I found where the dialogue was put in a different order, swapping Sugiki’s lines between this panel and his first line on the following page (in addition to another altered panel example):

As well as in this shot of Suzuki describing how they tug at the thread that connects them through their dance. Whereas before it put the word “dance” next to the part about tugging on the thread to specify what was meant by that, it was deleted in the volume. And while it was originally described as “affirming that we’re connected”, this was also tweaked a bit to be, “affirming our connection”.

There were a couple instances of character names being different from when they appeared earlier in the story. In this volume, two characters who were last mentioned back in volume 2 (Lucas Calvo, one of the champions at the table in Blackpool, and Deeks, who Ernie said hated Sugiki because he "stole" his girlfriend), either from typos or intentional changes, weren't the same as before. Lucas' last name was written with a 'g' sound (ガルボ) instead of a 'c' (カルボ), and this change carried over to the volume. On the other hand, Deeks' (ディクス) name got transposed as Disc (ディスク) in the magazine, but was fixed in the volume.

There was a typo that unfortunately made it through to the volume (but could perhaps be fixed in future printings). In chapter 34, when Norman is testing Suzuki's skills, he flashes back to Sugiki taking the national title from him several years earlier. The text in this scene, written in English, incorrectly states that Suzuki won the championship, rather than Sugiki.

The volume also includes the usual additions that are not present in the magazine, such as the under the cover flap comic, and Inouesatoh’s notes about each chapter.

The cover flap comic (which looks very much like a sketch, compared to previous ones that have had more complete art), features the Shinyas during a practice session earlier on in the series in December, where Suzuki complains that Sugiki’s Latin just isn’t sexy. Sugiki suggests that he can practice being sexy by wiggling his butt around to write a message in the air. Suzuki worries that if he starts writing out “love” or something, he’ll have to run away and escape. Sugiki gets started, and Suzuki calls out each letter that he can make out from his elegant butt bouncing. After figuring out he’s written “M-E-R-R-Y”, Suzuki guesses that he’s writing “Merry Christmas”. Sugiki gets mad that he said it aloud before he finished writing his message, and says he’s going to leave. Suzuki says, “Wait, I love you,” as narrative text says that this somehow turned into a love story in one panel.

And here are some tidbits I found interesting/amusing from the chapter notes:

She thinks readers who are fans of pecs will like Saichi.

She’s not sure if readers will love Max or hate him, but she personally likes him (sorry Sensei, I kinda hate him lol)

As of chapter 32, a portion of the art is now done digitally.

The epic “last dance” scene from 33 was something that she had planned since the beginning of the series, and it ended up being 8 times the cost for a typical chapter.

Special edition booklet:

The special edition comes with a 48 page hardcover booklet that includes a variety of different extras, divided into 8 sections called “heats”.

Heat 1 is a newly drawn, 12 page parody manga. Back in September 2020, Inouesatoh put out a request on Twitter for fans to send in their suggestions for an erotic side story. Putting the characters in a high school setting was the most requested scenario, so she chose this idea as the basis for the story. The title is “And All That Jazz” (the premise makes this somewhat confusing to summarize, so keep in mind that I’ll mostly be describing their actions based on the soul rather than the body, but will use quotation marks if it’s about other characters and who they think they’re addressing. It’ll all make sense, I promise...I think :P)

(The title page actually depicts the ending of the story, so I’ll come back to it later). It starts with Suzuki narrating his introduction, saying that he’s a transfer student to the Standard Academy. He really doesn’t get along with a guy named Sugiki, but for some reason, the two have now switched bodies with each other. Sugiki opens his shirt and inspects his new physique in front of other students, as Suzuki yells out asking what the hell he’s doing to his body. They look at themselves wearing each other’s expressions, Sugiki seeming surprised his mouth can gape open like that, and Suzuki wondering what happened to his body’s facial expression muscles. The bell rings and Sugiki heads off to class, as Suzuki is baffled that he can act so calm about this.

Sugiki perfectly reads a passage aloud in English class, something everyone (including the teacher, who looks like Norman) find unusual coming from “Suzuki”, as they wonder where his usual hearts are. Suzuki makes the decision to enjoy living as Sugiki for a bit, and is shown getting flirty with several girls. He notes that the more serious personality in his regular body is also strangely popular, though with a very different crowd.

A student named Alberko (Alberto in a girl’s uniform) shows up and says that “Sugiki” was supposed to have lunch with her(?) today. Suzuki says that he thought Alberko was going out with Dorou (a masculine alteration to Dolores’ name). Ernie and Suzuki watch as his harem falls apart with Alberko running amok. Ernie comments that both “Sugiki” and that transfer student have been acting weird all week, and he asks if something happened. Suzuki internally reflects back to one week earlier, when he was relaxing in bed in the infirmary. Sugiki comes in and accuses him of skipping class, and Suzuki tells him to mind his own business. He thought this would turn into one of their usual fights, but he can’t believe that actually happened instead...

After school, Sugiki asks Suzuki if they can go home together today. As they’re walking, Suzuki asks if Sugiki realizes what it was that made them switch places, and Sugiki says he does. Suzuki says that in that case, they know how they need to fix it, and they should go over to his house. Sugiki asks for clarification of whose house exactly he means by that.

As they start to get undressed, Suzuki says that he always thought his mom and sisters were annoying, but after a week apart he really misses them. Sugiki promises that he’ll make sure he can see them soon. Suzuki claims that he’ll be the one making Sugiki come, and Sugiki asks how he can talk like that when he was the one who looked like he was about to cry when Sugiki first touched him in the infirmary.

Sugiki peeks into Suzuki’s pants and wonders if he won’t get hard unless he touches him. Suzuki thinks it’d be weirder if he could get hard while looking at his own face, and wonders if Sugiki has AI in his crotch or something (Sugiki contends that it’s not his body). They fool around with each other until they finish, and Suzuki wonders why they didn’t change back yet. Sugiki suggests that maybe it needs to be just like the last time to count as a complete set, when they went at it until they fell off the bed, so both agree that they need to go for one more round. This then ties back to the title page, where they’ve finally managed to get back into their old bodies, but have now sprouted cat ears and tails.

Heat 2 of the booklet is 8 pages long, and contains short comics and illustrations that were not previously included in the volume releases. The comics include “How to 10 Dance”, a one-page comic with the Shinyas demonstrating the tango. Their privates end up touching, and Sugiki seems highly amused, gleefully asking Suzuki how it feels. Suzuki says that he was the one who got all bent out of shape over that back in volume 1, and tells him to lay off the sadist mode since they’re not dancing Latin right now. The second comic is “2nd Step”, and shows a glimpse of how the Shinyas were with each other after Suzuki gave the go-ahead for kissing. In fact, Sugiki ends up kissing him so much that Suzuki’s lips get sore and swollen. Sugiki then tries to kiss his neck as an alternative, but Suzuki’s not having it. The third comic depicts Suzuki’s first time in a public bath, where he realizes that Japanese people aren’t fully shaved everywhere like he is. Some of the old guys talk to him and slap their balls with their towels, and Suzuki, seeming a bit confused, gives his own balls a slap, too. After the comics are a selection of illustrations that were never used in the volumes, including this one from a Real 10 Dance event in 2018:

Heat 3 is 18 pages, and contains a variety of colored versions of both chapter covers and scenes from the manga, a couple of which I’ll share below:

Heat 4 includes 3 pages of insight from the professional dancers who consult for the manga, in which they explain the moves shown in specific panels.

Heat 5 is a single page look at Inouesatoh’s work space.

Heat 6 is 3 pages worth of advertisements that have been used to promote the series, including things like ads that were posted in subway stations:

Heat 7 is a single page look at the storyboard for chapter 1 of the manga.

Heat 8 is a single page showing the covers for foreign editions of the manga (Taiwanese, Korean, North American, and French).

Finally, there’s one last page with a thank you message from Inouesatoh, including an absolutely precious illustration of the Shinyas in happier times.

And that’s that! This really is an incredible release, and I’d definitely recommend picking up the special edition if you can. CD Japan offers direct international shipping, and I’ve also seen that Kinokuniya lists it as “available to order” currently (though they don’t appear to have stock on hand, so might take longer).

By any chance have you seen RWBY Volume 7? What are your thoughts?

I have watched it and I will gladly share my thoughts!

However, I would like to make clear that I am more a casual viewer than a hardcore fan, so I have surely missed many details.

Personally, I have really enjoyed volume 7 and it is one of my favourite volumes so far. I have especially liked it because of two characters I ended up loving for completely opposite reasons. These characters are Ironwood and Penny.

I love Ironwood because he is a character who passes the majority of the season walking in perfect equilibrium between being a possible ally and a possible antagonist. At one point he seems to grow in the right direction, but immediately later he regresses and ends the season as a full fledged villain.

All in all, Ironwood keeps exhibiting a contradictive behaviour throughout all the volume. He wants to tell the world the truth and has informed a small group of people he claims to trust. This seems to be almost in opposition with Ozpin who has kept even his most trusted comrades in the shadows about important truths. However, Ironwood’s ambition to tell the world is in conflict with him being too scared to share the information with people he has to work together with. This is a contradiction with which Ironwood will fight for the whole season and against which he will eventually lose.

Ironwood, just like Lionheart before him, loses to fear. However, he does so in a completely different way than the late headmaster. Lionheart was so scared to die that he betrayed Ozpin and allied himself with Salem. Ironwood does not want to switch sides and he wants to stop Salem like everyone else. However, his wish to do so makes him obsessive and paranoic. In short, Lionheart did not fight his fear, while Ironwood fights it too much and would want for it to disappear. The point, however, is that fear will never completely disappear and human beings must learn to live with it. This is why symbolically Salem can’t be killed. It is because fear can’t be conquered with simple might and prowess. However, this is what Ironwood is trying to do. He refuses to admit that he is scared and keeps trying to suppress his fear and to make it vanish by gaining more and more control and this of course backfires spectacularly until in the end Ironwood completely loses control.

He loses the leader of the Ace Op who died because of a fight which was avoidable. He loses the support of people like RWBY, JNR and Oscar who were genuinelly trying to help him. He loses the alliance with Robin and the rest of Atlas and finally he loses both Penny and the Winter Maiden. At the end of the volume Atlas is divided with two groups fighting each other while they should overcome their respective differences and work together. Ironwood’s paranoia, inability to face fear and to trust others are the reasons of this. It is probable that he will become more and more isolated and will be left behind by more of his own comrades in the next volume.

All in all, he is a very tragic character and it is very sad to see him spiral out of control especially after he has shown the potential for growth when he accepted to tell Robin and Atlas. That moment led to several conflicts being solved and made so that two of Salem’s most trusted agents could be neutralized. The moment Ironwood really starts facing his insecurities and fear and opens up to others he is rewarded, but his fear blinds him and does not let him realize the positivity of the results obtained. A leader should be able to make of the people around him a strength, but Ironwood does the opposite and ends up seeing others as his weakness.

Penny has gone through an almost completely different journey. Penny’s problem is that because of her nature she has been objectified by others since she was born. She has been created with a specific objective in mind aka the idea of building a protector. Penny has been destined to fight and to become Mantle and Atlas agent since before she was born and we have seen how she has been struggling with this and with her lack of freedom since the beginning. Before being accidentally killed by Pyrrha Penny states her plan of running away and during this volume she shows how much she wishes for normal human relationships. In her words she would like to find a way to do both what she wants and what she must.

Throughout the series Penny is constantly referred to as either a weapon or a monster and she ends up a victim to others’ schemes multiple times. Emerald has her killed during the tournament to spread anger and panic. Tyrian basically uses the same trick, but this time Penny is in the role of the perpetrator. At the same time, her boss clearly does not see her as a person and states that Penny is under “his complete control”.

This behaviour is interesting as well and once again shows Ironwood’s contradictive nature and his inability to truly understand the ideals he believes in. As a matter of fact Pietro explains that he created Penny because he wanted a protector with a soul. He even stated that his research was different from the others and that he was surprised it was the one which caught Ironwood’s eye. We do not know why Ironwood preferred Pietro’s ideas over the others, but what we are sure of is that by the time of the volume he has completely lost sight of what he could have potentially seen in that research. As a matter of fact he is suffocating Penny’s soul which is instead trying to emerge. Penny’s ideas and her feelings become more and more apparent throughout the season until they affirm themselves in the finale. Penny does not want to repress her feelings like Ironwood, the Ace Ops and Winter. She wants to affirm them and to fight for them. In the end it is her good heart and her iron body which lead her to the Winter Maiden. She manages to reach her and to receive her powers both because of her human soul and because of her robot body. Because of this, her becoming the Winter Maiden is an affirmation of her personhood and identity. Her new role is also a way to reconcile what she must do with what she wants to do as well.

All in all the volume shows how difficult it is to trust people and how trust is something which needs to be built and maintained. It also shows the futility of trying to repress one’s feelings.

This is especially shown in the fight between the Ace Ops and RWBY. As a matter of fact the Ops are clearly slowed down by her feelings both positive and negative towards RWBY. It’s clear, thus, that throughout the season the two groups have grown fond of each other and the sudden antagonism between their members leads to different kinds of feelings in the Ops.

Elm and Harriet reacts with anger and a sense of betrayal, while Marrow shows indecisiveness and a lack of resolutions. All these emotions clearly disturb the Ops’ performance.

To be more specific Elm’s anger disturbs her teamwork with Vine. As a matter of fact she lashes out at him and projects on him her sense of frustration. This is in contrast with Blake and Yang’s teamwork. This specific confrontation shows how much Yang and Blake’s relationship and closeness has grown throughout the season and how much they complement each other even more than the Vine and the Elm of the fable.

Harriet’s anger and hotheadness leads her to relentlessly attack even when she can’t move her arms and in the end she loses because of her own speed just like the hare of her fable.

Finally, the way Marrow loses is similar to what happens to the protagonist of The Dog and its Reflection. As a matter of fact  the dog of the fable is running away with meat in its mouth, but at one point it sees its own reflection in the water. The dog thinks that the meat in the mouth of its reflection is bigger than its and opens the mout to take it, but lets go of its trophy in the process and loses it. Marrow ends up doing something similar since he uses his semblance against Weiss, but has to let go of her in order to use it again against her Knight. All in all, the motif of reflections in Marrow’s fable is interesting when combined with Weiss’s own motifs since her character song is called Mirror Mirror.

All in all, it is as if the confrontation underlines how Weiss and the Knight are nothing, but two different aspects of the same person, two manifestations of who Weiss is. Marrow can’t properly face both as he can’t face his own contradictions and indeciveness, while Weiss is making progress in accepting who she is, her own different sides and in reconciling them. This is why she was not fazed when she was stopped by Marrow and could easily keep on fighting with her Knight. Marrow can’t face his own reflection, while Weiss is becoming more and more able to face hers.

All in all the Ace Ops insist on keeping one’s own feelings in check, but this makes them vulnerable when their feelings become explosive because they are not able to properly control them and to channell them.

Adding to what I have said about Weiss I think that in the next volume she should have a more prominent role since this is her country and where her family is. I was also surprised at how easily Weiss’s father was taken care of. All in all Weiss had already grown strong enough to win against him, so I am wondering if the real struggle for her will be about bringing her whole family back together. As for now her family is a mess with her mother being passive, her brother probably acting as a jerk to attract Weiss’s attention and Winter working with Weiss’s enemy. Weiss’s development as for now has been about growing distant from his father’s mentality and influence, so it is possible that what is being asked of her now is to bring the rest of her family back together, so that it can be rebuilt.

These are my major thoughts as for now. Other than these I liked Oscar’s development, Robin and I keep loving Neo and hoping for her to be given more depth. I am also curious to see if something interesting will develop with Mercury and Emerald, but they were not present in this volume.

  Did you know that The Ancient Magus’ Bride anime has OVAs (a three part series known as The Ancient Magus' Bride: Those Awaiting a Star)? If you want more content with Chise without reading ahead in the manga, I recommend them wholeheartedly. They’re fantastic. They center around Chise’s childhood. They’re a love letter to reading… and an affirmation of life.

I know a lot of people who were socially awkward growing up. In fact, one of those people was me. I was socially awkward growing up. I didn’t know many people my age outside of elementary school. Inside of elementary school, the friends that I did have were few. The friends I had were the kinds of people that got along with everybody, regardless of what I liked or did. I wasn’t sporty or daring enough to fit in with the rest of the boys, and I wasn’t into the interests or hobbies that most of the girls seemed to care for. I felt isolated, lonely from my peers. I sought ways to distract myself from that alienating discomfort. One method cropped up that felt like a sure-fire success at least half of the time: books, reading.

In no way am I trying to claim that my childhood was anywhere as bad as Chise’s. I can make parallels though.

The Ancient Magus’ Bride: Those Awaiting a Star is a 3-part OVA series that acts as prequel to the events of the main story. That said, the actual prequel part takes place in a flashback well into the main show by the protagonist, Chise Hattori. It features a new character (plus some extra context) that isn’t introduced to viewers until several episodes in the main anime later. These incidental spoilers aside, The Ancient Magus’ Bride OVAs are absolutely worth a watch for: (1) anyone impatient waiting for the show’s next episode or (2) curious enough to learn more about the characters -- all without reading ahead in the manga. They’re, in fact, anime-original. They center around Chise’s childhood -- a childhood alluded to in quick-and-brief snapshots in the main story, and illustrated in full graphic reels during the OVAs. It’s great, it’s tragic, and it’s ultimately uplifting.

While a sleigh beggy little kid, Chise is harassed by magical, malicious beings invisible to others. She reacts to them like how any normal kid would: in abject terror. They scorn her for her inability to open up to them, or otherwise find her too troublesome to manage. Those kinds of chronic experiences of child abuse throughout your formative years aren’t recipes for a healthy self-esteem or social life. In these specific episodes of being bullied and abandoned, she stumbles into a magical library stewarded by a kindly host. The Magician of the Forest, Riichi Miura, assures her that the monsters won’t come after her inside and offers her access to the library’s many books.

Initially, as a sanctuary from the monsters, and finally, as a refuge from her other troubles, she gets sucked in, reading voraciously.

When Chise reads these books, she gets sucked into the worlds they illustrate with words. In one way, The Ancient Magus’ Bride OVAs are a love letter to reading. Combined with a bit of imagination, the texts we encounter through reading can transport us to somewhere fantastical, somewhere fun, somewhere.. else. Reading allow us to travel to those places different -- places that aren’t the real, immediate, and painful ones we are intimate with. Chise intimates as much when Riichi comments on the visible progress she’s made reading the library’s contents. The worlds of these books allow her to forget her own miserable one. But there’s a danger in losing yourself to this escapism. Reality tends to strike hard despite your best efforts to avoid it.

The events that unfold for the library and its magician are like a bittersweet fairy tale. Having grown fond of Chise, Riichi considers inviting her to stay with him, forever. He ultimately rejects it, believing Chise has much more to live for, literally. Fate intervenes, in concurrence with Riichi’s determination and regardless of Chise’s intentions. The monsters outside find an opening and flood into the library. Riichi attempts to protect Chise from being attacked. The library is ransacked into ruin, and Riichi suffers a fatal wound. His corporeal form fades away like fairy dust. Chise’s safe spaces are taken away from her. She believes that she’ll never be without misery.

Such a bitter conclusion to this tale might suggest a bitter end to Chise specifically, and a bitter fate broadly for the socially awkward. Chise as a child had a hard time expressing herself coherently to others, and only ever truly opened up in any articulate way when she was able to finally let her guard down and trust someone -- a luxury that she’ll never get to enjoy until many years later. The journey introduces a self-ethnographic dimension where both autobiography and ethnography force us into a relationship of pertaining symmetry between Same versus the Other, Subjectivity versus Alterity, Individual versus Collective, Subject versus Object. Consequently, this generational event is mirrored in the act of walking performed by his mother Ana and sister Ana who go on a pilgrimage via emblematic routes as a metaphor for Mother Africa and the Diaspora. The route covers places such as the Musée de l’Homme (France) and the maximum-security prisons La Santé (France) and Saint-Gilles (Belgium). A ritual performance that combines aspects of the sacred and the profane when his mother Ana prays for the afflicted souls of genocide victims. The act condemns the colonial violence imposed by Belgian King Leopold II to secure the appropriation of the Congo. To the same extent, the pamphlets provide a sort of aesthetics of emergency in the artist’s own words: to burst open the headstone and cut the king’s throat with an arrow soaked in GOLDEN FROG poison. —– with an arrow from the Pre-Columbian people EMBERA::: kill the king before he arrives in CONGO. 

Within this performance context, we have the series Santos de Minha Mãe [My Mother’s Saints] made-up of food products inside resin blocks that feature the names of saints that safeguard requests for family protection and amulets to protect the body against danger. Nazareth also reclaims different forms of resistance used by enslaved people, such as Black brotherhoods and sisterhoods. It refers both to a history of agricultural technologies linked to a colonial logic of commodities and the commercialization of faith. His visual discourse presents art collecting as a critical practice. The processes of ordering objects evoke the collections of cabinets of curiosities that later became ethnographic museums, tangentially to values of aesthetics, art and science.

In the field of anthropology, the invention of photography anticipated its scientific use in studies on evolution, anthropometry and material culture. This led to the selection, classification and hierarchy of the cultural Other. Here we can cite the five daguerreotypes of a Borun woman and young man captured by E. Thiesson in Paris (1844), which belong to the Musée de l’Homme. The records of these dehumanised bodies that were exhibited under a mechanical gaze are confronted by his mother’s human gaze. This is not only Ana’s gaze; it is combined with Nazareth’s, re-signifying the place of science, annihilation and slavery in the re-elaboration of the subjectivity of these two people photographed, conjuring up a family history. The meaning of the exhibition becomes polysemic when connected to the voids and confrontations of the everyday experiences of hegemonized bodies.

The place of technology as politics of destruction and restitution of narratives is challenged in another series that uses black and white photography and printing on cotton paper to show images collected on the Internet. This materiality refers to agricultural technologies and social division of labour, as well as to cotton trading routes within a colonial history that entailed the transplantation of science from African people to the colonies during the Diaspora. The souls of anonymous people are captured at the same time these images are diluted by the fading of a collective social memory. It is a sort of shadow projecting an absence. Yet, it is one that paradoxically reveals a presence that is anterior to Ana and Nazareth. The photographic records are disrupted with white circles made of efun (a type of chalk used in Afro-Brazilian rituals). These circles are used in liturgical activities and refer to the re-establishment of balance by reclaiming a new voice for these hegemonized narratives.

In another work, Nazareth examines the political technology of bodies when he approaches the issue of the imprisonment of Black men in penal institutions. They are the drivers of the exercise of violence as a programmed and selective erasure of these selves. These relations appear in placards with the names of maximum-security prisons contrasting with the relationship between colonial powers and their colonies: La Santé (France), Saint-Gilles (Belgium) and Kabare (Congo). Most importantly, the African prison is not a native institution, but a colonial remnant of body control. Crime becomes a tradable Black product. The experience of walking as an aesthetic form also appears in the performance (Mendes Wood DM Brussels, April 24th 2019) where the anonymous bodies of non-white immigrants perforate bags of flour and sweep the white powder into circles. The object of art is intertwined into the everyday life in the brutality of the white circle. Concrete geometric order. The daily ritual manifested in contemporary art. White circles associated to efun as a liturgy that re-organises a history interwoven with colonial violence and trauma.

Nazareth’s artistic propositions create a journey where aesthetic acts produce urgent epistemologies to invest against the marks of colonial cartographies. This appears in the duality of the circle that evokes the mathematical thought of Ancient African and 8th century Islamic geometry. The circle of African tradition contrasted to the rationality of Western art’s concrete art circle. Modernism. Post-Modernism. The performance and labour gesture of forming the circle. The political context of neoliberal capitalism that perpetuates inequalities.

The tensioning of these cartographies and the re-affirmation of community voices are re-elaborated in the dismantling of colonial traps through the use of technologies to control and intervene on individuals by articulating the planned annihilation of collectivity.

This first secret may be liken as one foot in the door to this bulletin, so to speak.  You and me may ask, apart from food intake, why is exercise advocated as a solution for weight loss too?  The answer is, exercise raises your metabolism, allowing your body to burn up the excess fat. That is why, beginners are encouraged to exercise often, in small doses. I refer to this as ‘maintenance exercise’ such as taking 30-minute walks daily, and even doing housework every day. 

BUT THEN, WHY ARE FITNESS PROFESSIONALS also promoting eating for weight loss?  This second question is that if we do eat more, then logically we must exercise extra to burn off the unwanted calories so we can enjoy ourselves to eat more! Agree or not?

Underscoring that secret well, we now shall proceed to the secret of selecting high energy food! Shall we? SECRETS NO. 2. YOU MUST SELECT FOOD THAT SERVE AS A HIGH OCTANE FUEL.

 You may have heard the phrase, ‘Food for fuel’. Well, that is just what it means.  It is a subtle ploy to encourage better eating habits and correct bad ones. Oddly enough, the lack of exercise is often not even mentioned as a more likely cause of the scales tipping over.  Truly, it’s nearly always just a matter of eating more of such food than what your body needs and ‘poof’ your weight disappear over time.  Personally, I believe there is a huge difference between petroleum grade RON92 and RON97. If you want more power, better fuel efficiency and a cleaner engine, then RON97 is a fuel but it costs more. Get my drift? THE SAME PRINCIPLE APPLIES TO FOOD, and quality food does cost more. Compare, for example, burger and fries to a light pasta and side salad. Both give about the same amount of energy in calories, but only one encourages better performance from the body. To say the least!

By the way, are we still on the same page or rather on the same screen, if you are then let’s go full speed ahead? Alright?

SECRETS NO. 3. YOU CAN MORE PREFERABLY EAT MORE SUCH AS SIX MEALS A DAY 

You guess it right! There are only two occasions when I actually do that when I’m on holiday, and during the three days of Chinese New Year! Otherwise, most of us can’t actually eat six meals a day. That is just too much food. That idea was coined years ago by bodybuilders on training. Their type of training requires eating a whole chicken daily, and up to a dozen eggs. But what does it really mean total six meals a day? 

OUR ENERGY LEVEL HAVE HIGHS AND LOWS throughout the day, and this is usually caused by .our fluctuating calories our body requires.  And maintain a steady blood sugar level because we never allow ourselves to go hungry. Waiting too long between meals, or having irregular mealtimes, often results in those familiar moments of lethargy we feel throughout the day when your blood sugar levels begin to crash.

One moment please! Below is not just another secret but one that you should seriously read and follow! Agree?

SECRETS NO. 4. YOU MUST EAT MORE FOOD THAT IS INFLATED WITH AIR

 No matter how you cut and dice it, the fact remains that when you incorporate air into foods it actually puffs them up. “Because airy foods are bigger, they trick your brain into thinking you’re eating more,” says Barbara Rolls. Recently, I've started to order a side dish, like roasted Brussels sprouts or grilled asparagus, from the a la carte selections as a healthy option to ward off hunger pangs and pace myself during the meal. At home, my wife will throw together a quick salad with greens, cherry tomatoes, and a little olive and balsamic vinegar or snack on roasted veggies from the previous night's dinner. Honestly, this would surely help you take the edge off my hunger, so you don't overeat when dinner is served.

 Let's do a quick recap with this paragraph. Least we forget. Any problem with that?
