do you know any shrimp scientists? if yes can you ask them why thor amboinensis are apparently referred to as sexy shrimp. because what

I looked into this, and it turns out the answer is basically that these shrimp sway sexily (?) whilst they walk or feed. You be the judge.

Thor amboinensis or Squat Shrimp

Squat shrimp, yes also known as sexy shrimp, lives amongst the corals of the Indo-West Pacific and Atlantic Ocean. It's believed they get their nick-name from their abdomen which is raised above their heads. They have a commensalistic relationship (beneficial for both organisms) with the coral they live on; the shrimp eats the mucus and detritus from the coral, and the coral gets a personal cleaner!

4th of August 2024: Blunt-tentacled Anemone

Let’s dive back down underwater, in order to look at the Blunt-tentacled Anemone (Telmatactis cricoides). They can be found off the coast of Morocco, specifically in the Canaries and Cabo Verde, but also across the Mediterranean [1].

One of their main identifying features is their club-shaped tentacles, of which they have around 24-96 [2], but beyond that they may actually vary a lot. They can be only a few centimetres in diameter all the way up to 20, with the latter being most prominent in the anemones from the Canaries [3], while those near the Chafarinas Islands near the Spanish Mediterranean tend to be more consistently around 6 cm [4]. They can also have a wide variety of colours, most commonly being a golden brown, pink, or reddish-brown [3].

Blunt-tentacled anemones are seldom found alone, as one study found that 86% had some form of crustacean living in or near them. The most common of these was the (I am not making up this name) Sexy Shrimp (Thor amboinensis), who was able to navigate in and around the Blunt-tentacled Anemone without triggering their feeding reaction. Oftentimes the Sexy Shrimp were alone, but in one instance 18 occupied a single Blunt-tentacled Anemone [5].

There appears to have been an expansion of the habitat of the Blunt-tentacled Anemone in recent years, with more and more of them being found near the Spanish Mediterranean coast. This is likely due to climate change, making temperate waters more tropical and thus more appealing for them to reside in [2].

Squat shrimp/ Sexy shrimp (Thor amboinensis)

The squat shrimp or sexy shrimp is a species of shrimp found across the Indo-West Pacific and in parts of the Atlantic Ocean. It lives symbiotically on corals, sea anemones and other marine invertebrates in shallow reef communities. Thor amboinensis is a small shrimp growing to a length of about 13 mm.

The sexy shrimp (Thor amboinensis) gets it’s common name because it is often observed shaking its tail in a raised position. They look a little bit like they are twerking. The tiny invertebrate inhabits several species of anemones and corals in the Indo-West Pacific, feeding on detritus and dead tentacle tissue. The host provides safety from predators and food, while the shrimp provides cleaning services to the host.
