So as mentioned in my previous post about this bingo, my birthday is next month. And for that occasion I wanted to host another bingo! Like my last bingo in October 2021, this one will have moodboards to the squares. You don’t have to use them, but they’re there for inspiration, and can also be used in your fics as a “cover” if you’d like 🥰 I’m gonna have the moodboards up before the bingo starts on Monday 17th of January 😅

here are some rules:

1. It’ll start on January 17th and ends on February 17th at Midnight (Norwegian time)

Western Influences on Japanese Culture

Did you know that Japan was originally an isolated nation? However, that drastically changed on 8 July 1853, when US Commodore Matthew Perry’s squadron of four ships arrived at Tokyo Bay, marking the start of Japan opening up to the Western world. The Meiji Restoration (明治維新, meiji ishin) of 1868 would later accelerate the modernisation and westernisation of Japan. The Western culture was widely promoted throughout this island country, eventually leading to the blending of the Japanese and Western cultures. 

Literature

The introduction of Western literature to Japan had a significant impact on Japanese literature. Literary scholar Tsubouchi Shōyō’s critical essay Shōsetsu Shinzui emphasised on realism rather than didacticism while novelist Futabatei Shimei’s book, Ukigumo, the first Japanese modern novel, was written in colloquial instead of classical Japanese literary language.

Notably, Sōseki Natsume (夏目 漱石) and Haruki Murakami (村上 春樹), both prominent novelists in Japan who have published many critically-acclaimed books, have their works influenced by the West.

Hailed as the greatest writer of the Meiji Era, the author of the novel ‘I am a Cat’ firsthand witnessed the modernisation of Japan. The pain and solitude of the Japanese caused by modernity would become the main theme of Sōseki Natsume’s works, such as his masterpiece ‘Kokoro’.

The works of contemporary Japanese literature author Haruki Murakami are celebrated both locally and internationally. The writer himself has an immense interest in the Western culture which is evident in his novels beloved by many. Bohemian writer Franz Kafka is said to be one of his sources of inspiration.

Fashion

Kimonos are widely known to be traditional Japanese garments. Western fashion was first adopted for military uniforms. In the emperor’s court, a mandate to wear Western garments was passed for men in 1972 and for women in 1886. By 1890, although men wore suits, only noble women or wives of diplomats wore Western attire. Kimonos would still be commonly worn in the early Meiji period, though with Western accessories. It was only post-World War Two when there was a major transition to Western-style clothes due to heavy influence by America. Western clothing are referred to as yōfuku (洋服).

Above is a picture of the Glover House, the oldest wooden Western-style building in Japan built by Scottish merchant Thomas Glover who moved to Nagasaki, Japan. This marvellous building is located in Glover Garden, an open-air museum. 

In the late 19th century, Japan rapidly assimilated Western architecture forms and structural technology into their buildings, giving rise to European-style buildings constructed out of reinforced bricks, and the usage of steel-reinforced concrete later in the Taishō era (大正).  

Tokyo Station (東京駅), built between the Meiji and Taishō eras, is in fact deemed to be legendary for its European-style architecture which was designed by Tatsuno Kingo (辰野 金吾). The architecture style of this red-brick building is noted to be Neo-Baroque. This majestic ceiling currently found in the station is actually a restored version of the original that was damaged during the war.

Anime/Manga/Games

Well-known examples of Japanese pop culture include anime, manga and games. 

Take anime for example. It is undeniable that many have drawn inspirations from Western culture. We now have anime with Western names, in Western settings and even adapted from Western lores!

Overall

Eternals was generally fun to watch as a non-Marvel fan. The main storyline leaves you with questions which are answered as the plot moves along. The pacing was good and did not feel too long. 

Characters

Sersi. She has the power to change elements of objects. This could have been used in so many occasions, in so many more effective ways. Could she control the element to become anything she wished it to be? 

Ikaris. He is difficult to read. What are his true intentions? Where did he go when he knew the secrets. Also his powers are truly comic book-esque. Lasers from eyes! Flying vertically!

Kingo was a scene stealer.

Gilgamesh. He the loveable character. The contrast and relationship between him and Thena was interesting. 

Makkari and Druig pairing was cute. More please!

Phastos. His backstory was good.

Sprite looks like Newt from Maze Runner (Thomas Brodie-Sangster) from some angles. 

Quirks

The cast are really pretty. I wish they would give a Sersi more character. We did not get to see much of what she was thinking and her perspective.

The Bollywood references were really fun to watch from the dance sequence to the movie posters Kingo was in for over all those years.

The comedic relief portions were good at certain points.

Why name it uni-mind. It sounds terrible. All that comes to mind is Megamind. It is basically a hive mind or collective intelligence.
