Understanding Catholic Teaching On The Blessed Virgin Mary - Part 6
Written by: Tom Perna
The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary  into Heaven
Before the Papal Definition
Before Bl. Pope Pius XII solemnly declared (in 1950) the dogma of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary into Heaven, he asked the bishops of the Church two questions: first, is the Assumption definable, and second, do you and your flocks desire such a definition? From the 1,232 bishops asked, 1,210 responded overwhelmingly with an affirmation of yes to both questions. It was the consensus of the Church that this doctrine be solemnly defined.
From 1854, the year the Immaculate Conception was solemnly declared a dogma, to 1946, the Vatican received over eight million petitions from the universal Church asking for this dogma. The Council Fathers of the First Vatican Council (1869–1870) also signed a petition desiring that the Assumption of Mary into Heaven be declared dogmatic.
The Papal Definition
With the complete and total consensus of the bishops in union with the lay faithful of the Church, on December 1, 1950 Bl. Pope Pius XII spoke “ex cathedra” (“from the chair”) declaring,
For which reason, after we have poured forth prayers of supplication again and again to God, and have invoked the light of the Spirit of Truth, for the glory of Almighty God who has lavished his special affection upon the Virgin Mary, for the honor of her Son, the immortal King of the Ages and the Victor over sin and death, for the increase of the glory of that same august Mother, and for the joy and exultation of the entire Church; by the authority of our Lord Jesus Christ, of the Blessed Apostles Peter and Paul, and by our own authority, we pronounce, declare, and define it to be a divinely revealed dogma: that the Immaculate Mother of God, the ever Virgin Mary, having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory. (Emphasis added)
In this declaration, Bl. Pope Pius XII focuses on the Sacred Scriptures, with the primary Scripture verse being Genesis 3:15, given to him by the bishops of the Church as the main verse confirming this teaching. The Holy Father also draws on Sacred Tradition where we see Church Fathers, beginning in the fifth and sixth centuries, writing about Mary’s Assumption and celebrating this common belief in the Eastern liturgies.
Furthermore, with the Assumption of Mary into Heaven we see the conclusion of her earthly life that began with her Immaculate Conception and led to her being the Mother of God. The Assumption of Mary is the clear natural effect of the Immaculate Conception.
The Assumption of Mary in Sacred Scripture
Now that we have a primary understanding of the definition of the Assumption of Mary, let us turn our attention to understanding the scriptural teachings of the dogma. There are two Scripture verses that speak directly to Mary’s Assumption into Heaven. Like the Immaculate Conception, the primary verse is Genesis 3:15. In accordance with this Scripture verse, we also have the writings of St. Paul on sin. The secondary verse is Luke 1:28, but also in accordance with this verse is Revelation 11:19 and 12:1.
In Genesis, Mary shares the same victory over sin and death as does Jesus due to their mutual enmity with Satan and sin. St. Paul addresses this victory in Romans chapters 5–8, and again in Hebrews 2:14: “Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same nature, that through death he might destroy him who has the power of death, that is, the devil.” The effects of the seed of Satan are sin and death, therefore Mary had to triumph over sin and death. Through the Immaculate Conception Mary triumphs over sin and through the Assumption into Heaven she triumphs over death.
The secondary verse supporting the Assumption of Mary we have learned about already. Luke 1:28 says, “And he came to her and said, ‘Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you.’” Being that Mary was “full of grace,” the effects of sin would not taint her, which would be bodily death. In union with Luke 1:28, we also have Revelation 11:19: “Then God’s temple in heaven was opened and the ark of the covenant was seen within his temple” and 12:1, “And a great sign appeared in heaven, a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars.” In the heavenly Jerusalem, Mary is the New Ark of the Covenant and the woman crowned and assumed.
There are other Scripture verses that give support to a potential bodily assumption. 1 Corinthians 15:23 states, “But each in his own order: Christ the first fruits, then at his coming those who belong to Christ” (emphasis added). “At his coming” is in reference to when Christ will return and the bodies of the saints will rise in glory. Matthew 27:52 says, “the tombs also were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised.” Besides St. Matthew’s Gospel, there is nothing written about this in secular history. Verified by many (27:53), we don’t know who was raised, or the length of time, or what their bodies appeared like. Psalm 132:8 prophesies, “Arise, O Lord, out of your resting place: you and the ark which you have sanctified.”
Mary as the New Ark of the Covenant
The ark of the covenant in the Old Testament contained the Ten Commandments, a gold vessel (similar to a ciborium) holding the manna that fed the Israelites in the desert (read Ex 16:34), and the staff of Aaron that blossomed (read Heb 9:4). The ark was the visible sign of God’s presence and protection among the sons and daughters of Israel. A cloud, which also represented God’s presence, would overshadow the ark. This cloud became known as the shekinah, which means “Divine Presence” or “Divine Glory.” At the Annunciation, the Holy Spirit overshadows Mary, the New Ark of the Covenant, just as the shekinah overshadowed the old ark of the covenant.
The New Testament is a covenant that is everlasting between God and all of humanity through the person of Jesus Christ. Mary, the God-Bearer (Theotokos), becomes the sacred vessel, for she is immaculately created by God to carry God Himself in the person of Jesus Christ. Just as the original ark was layered with gold, a precious metal that does not fade, so Mary, the New Ark of the Covenant, through her Immaculate Conception would not fade.
Jesus Christ is the fulfillment of the articles that were placed in the ark of the covenant. He is the New Law (Beatitudes) that fulfills the Old Law (the Ten Commandments). He is the fulfillment of the manna come down from heaven that fed the Israelites. Jesus is the living bread come down from heaven (see Jn 6:51) to feed all of us with his Holy Eucharist (read Jn 6:22–71). He is the fulfillment of the staff of Aaron, as Aaron was the first high priest of the Levitical priesthood and Jesus is the eternal and Royal High Priest.
The Assumption of Mary in Sacred Tradition
Even though the Assumption of Mary was not declared dogmatic until 1950, recall that the Church has held this teaching sacred from her earliest centuries.
By the fifth and sixth centuries, the Eastern rites of the Church developed liturgies to the Blessed Virgin Mary celebrating her Assumption in Egypt and Syria. In the middle of the fifth century, the feast of the Anapausis (“fallen asleep) or the Dormition of the Mother of God began to be celebrated in a basilica near Jerusalem, specifically Gethsemane, which tradition taught held her tomb and final resting place. By the end of the sixth century and reign of Emperor Maurice (AD 582–602), this feast had spread throughout the Eastern Empire and was to be celebrated on August 15.
After appearing in Egypt, the tradition of the Dormition of Mary made its way to France in the sixth century and was celebrated on January 18. During the pontificate of Pope Sergius I in the late seventh century, the Feast of the Dormition of the Mother of God was commonly celebrated and eventually became known in the West as the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. By the twelfth century, the doctrinal teaching of the Assumption of Mary was accepted and celebrated in the universal Church in both the East and West.
The writings of St. Gregory of Tours, St. Germanus, Patriarch of Constantinople, and St. John Damascene also wrote about the Assumption (and Dormition) of Mary.
When speaking about Mary’s departure from this earth in De Gloria Beatorum Martyrum (late sixth century), St. Gregory of Tours says,
When finally the Blessed Virgin had fulfilled the course of this life, and was now to be called out of this world, all the apostles were gathered together from each region to her house . . . and behold the Lord Jesus came with his angels and, receiving her soul, entrusted it to the Archangel Michael and departed. At the break of day the apostles lifted the body with the couch and laid in the sepulcher, and they guarded in awaiting the coming of the Lord. And behold the Lord again stood by them, and commanded that the holy body be taken up and borne on a cloud into paradise, where now, reunited with (her) soul and rejoicing with the elect, it enjoys the good things of eternity which shall never come to an end.
In Praise of the Holy and Venerable Falling-Asleep of our Most Glorious Lady Mother of God Mary ever Virgin (pre-AD 730), Patriarch of Constantinople St. Germanus speaks about the appointed time of Mary’s falling asleep:
When Christ had willed that His Mother, she who had borne Life Itself within her, should be taken upwards to Himself, He tells her, by the message of an angel who was already known to her, that the time of her falling asleep is now at hand. And this he did so that through the imitation of Her coming death, she might not be troubled at departure from the living; as will happen to the rest of mortal men. For we know that the separation of the soul from the body can bring distress to the spirit of even strong men. Therefore, lest death, coming unawares, should trouble the natural instinct of the body, and so that His Mother might know beforehand of her own departure, He Who knows all things sent an angel to her, to give her strength of soul . . .
Speaking in his second homily of three given in Jerusalem on the Dormition of the Blessed Virgin, St. John Damascene says,
This day the Immaculate Virgin, unacquainted with early affections, and nurtured on heavenly affections, has not returned to earth; but, belonging truly to the life of heaven, she has taken up abode in heavenly dwellings . . . it crossed over to it by way of an earthly tomb. And first it was taken through the midst of the city [by the Apostles], like a bride in her beauty, but she is adorned in the unapproachable radiance of the Spirit, and thence it was born to that most holy place, Gethsemani, angels overshadowing her with their wings, going before and with her and following after, together with the whole assembly of the Church.
Paragraph 974 of the Catechism states, “The Most Blessed Virgin Mary, when the course of her earthly life was completed, was taken up body and soul into the glory of heaven, where she already shares in the glory of her Son’s Resurrection, anticipating the resurrection of all members of his Body” (see also 966).
Did Mary Die?
From what the early Church Fathers have given us, now arises the question that has been debated for centuries and is still debated today: Did the Blessed Virgin Mary die? There are two positions on this question, one from the Mortalists and the second from the Immortalists. (1)
The Mortalists position is that Mary experienced a temporary separation of soul and body but without bodily corruption. Her soul would have assumed directly into heaven and her body remained on earth for three days [like her Son]. Pope St. John Paul II favored this position when he said, “The fact that the Church proclaims Mary free from original sin by a unique divine privilege does not lead to the conclusion that she also received physical immortality. The Mother is not superior to the Son who underwent death, giving it a new meaning and changing it into a means of salvation.” If our Lord endured death, then so did His mother.
The Eastern rites of the Catholic Church (and the Orthodox churches) celebrate this as the Dormitio or Dormition. When time had come for the Theotokos to pass from this life to the next, the Apostles, including St. Paul, traveled, gathered, and briefly spent time with her. St. Thomas arrived three days after Mary had fallen asleep (a term we use when someone passes into death) and wanted to see her. When the Apostles went to the tomb where she was placed, they found that it was empty. An angel of the Lord appeared to them saying the Theotokos was assumed into heaven. By the fourth century, the majority of the East celebrated this feast.
The Immortalists position is that Mary with body and soul intact was assumed into heaven. Timothy of Jerusalem does not think Mary died and argues by saying, “Wherefore the Virgin is immortal up to now, because he who dwelt in her, assumed her to the heavenly regions.”
Between the two positions, the position of the Mortalists is the stronger theological position. Most of the theologians and doctors of the Church, from St. Augustine of Hippo to Venerable John Cardinal Newman, conclude that Mary did suffer death, but without bodily corruption. It was not a painful death, as some have claimed that she was martyred (Simeon’s prophecy), but as St. Francis de Sales says, it was a death “due to a transport of love.”
Conclusion
The four Marian dogmas should in no way take away from our relationship with Jesus Christ. Knowing these dogmas of the Virgin Mary will only increase and strengthen our relationship with our Lord each day. If you want to get to know a person, spend time with his mother. This is exactly what we need to do with the Blessed Virgin Mary. The more time we spend with her and learn about her, the more we will come to know and love Jesus. Don’t be afraid to study Mary! Having a relationship with her will only improve our relationship with Him.

Tips for younger looking skin over 50
Who among us relishes the idea of getting old? Although it’s true that embracing our changing appearance is a healthy position to take, an excessive amount of wrinkles, saggy skin, and paunchiness can be an unnecessary bummer. The good news is that there are plenty of steps we can take—with nutrition, exercise and skin care, just to name a few—that’ll not only stop the effect of time on our bodies but even roll back the clock a few years. Below are 50 such strategies for looking more youthful in what should be your best decade yet. And for more healthy living advice, be sure to Steal The Secrets of Ageless Superstar Athletes.

1 Use sunscreen
Being exposed to sunlight does have health benefits. It can help regulate the production of melatonin, and we humans are are rather good at converting rays into vitamin D, a nutrient that a supermajority of Americans are deficient in, particularly those living in northern states. That said, ultraviolet (UV) rays break down skin fibers, which cause it to sag and lose elasticity (not to mention lead to melanoma). If you’re going to be spending time outside, use a sunblock with an SPF of at least 30, and wear a hat with a brim that casts a shadow over your face. Oh, and speaking of your face? Don’t miss the 13 Astonishing Things Your Face Shape Says About You.
2 Tame your guy-brows
As you get older, your brows can get, well, a little woolly. This change can happen slowly, making it harder to recognize (and leaving you scratching your head when people start offering you their seats on public transit). Resist the temptation to shape them yourself. Instead, ask your barber to do a trim during your regular visits. And while you’re at it, have him take care of excess ear and nose hair too. Don’t be shy—he’s used to it. Or grab one of these 10 High-Tech Grooming Gadgets You Need Now to stay perfectly manscaped.
how to increase energy after 50
3 Get more sleep
When your co-workers tell you that you look tired, they really mean that you look bad, old or both. Next time you’re at the water cooler, hand them a tall glass of STFU by having snoozed your way to a more youthful, vibrant appearance. Studies indicate that seven to eight hours of shut-eye is optimal, and it’ll make you look younger, happier and more attractive. Talk about an easy route to reeling back the years. (And extending them: According to a study published in the Journal of Sleep Research, getting less than six hours of sleep a night comes with a 10% increase in risk of death!) Is where you live affecting your sleep levels? Take a look at the 50 Most Sleepless Cities in America.
4 Eat oysters
In addition to being a great source of muscle-protective protein, oysters are a prime source of zinc. “This mineral helps convert vitamin A, a vital nutrient for eye health, into a usable form and transport it through blood, says Chip Goehring, Board President of the American Macular Degeneration Foundation (AMDF). “Recent studies also suggest that zinc can slow the progression of macular degeneration,” he adds. How’s that for a pearl of wisdom?

5 Change how you frame your face
Our faces appear to lengthen as we age. One way to forestall looking like an old codger is to foreshorten your look and make your face appear more rounded (read: youthful). Crewnecks make the face look more rounded than V-necks. For the same reason, when you’re dressing casually, wear button-collared shirts rather than a wide-spread collar. They narrow the face.
6 Shave off a few years
Sure, stubble, a moustache or a beard can lend you a rugged air but forgoing a clean shave isn’t ideal if you’re trying to look more youthful. A recent British study showed men with facial hair looked about 10 years older than they actually were. But that’s not the only reason you should shave to look young. Taking a razor to your face sloughs off dead skin cells and helps stimulate collagen production, making your face appear younger. For those wanting to stop looking like Father Time, This Haircut Will Shave 10 Years Off Your Age.
7 Eat flax seeds
Flax offer a payload of omega-3 fatty acids, which erase spots and iron out fine lines. A study in the British Journal of Nutrition found that participants who downed about half a teaspoon of omega-3s in six weeks experienced significantly less irritation and redness (thanks to their anti-inflammatory properties), along with better-hydrated skin.
8 Dress your age
Passing 40 can “inspire” us to dress younger. Bad move. “Dressing younger only serves to highlight your advancing years,” says Alex Wilcox, co-proprietor of New York men’s clothing store Lord Willy’s. “You end up looking like a old head on a young body. This in contrast to dressing classic — albeit with a few playful little touches — which tends to do the opposite.” For ideas on establishing the right look, follow these 25 Rules of Office Style.
9 Stand up straighter
Another quick, simple way to appear younger is to stand up straight, pull your shoulders back and tighten your core. Experts say you’ll appear 10 pounds lighter and will be perceived as healthier, more confident, alert, and more youthful. It’s also a hedge against back pain.
10 Smile more
A 2011 study demonstrated that happy-looking people are perceived to be younger (compared to pictures of the very same people sporting a neutral or angry expression). In the study, 154 adults guessed the age of 171 male and female faces. Researchers discovered that the age of happy or smiling faces was likely to be underestimated by an average of about two years! Need some motivation? Check out these 25 Ways to be Happier Now!
11 Nuke age spots
Brown splotches on the face or hands are a giveaway of aging skin, and we tend to see them arrive more when we reach our 50s. IPL (intense pulsed light) or lasers helps to disperse the pigment, leading to an even, more youthful complexion.
12 Moisturize
Dry skin can look so dull that you can actually end up looking like you’re covered in a thin layer of dust. Use a moisturizer on your face, hands and body. An effective, natural and inexpensive option is coconut oil. Not only is it effective at locking in moisture and staving off wrinkles, you’ll smell and taste like a macaron. Women love macarons! Another tip: Wear tinted moisturiser. If your complexion looks even in tone, you appear younger according to research by Dr Bernhard Fink, an expert in evolutionary psychology at the University of Gottingen.
13 Eat more grapes
Grapes are filled with anthocyanins, which have arthritis-fighting properties and help boost collagen in the retina, which protects the eyes against age-related macular degeneration.
How To Release Toxins From Fat Cells
14 Detox with water
Puffy, dark circles under the eyes often become worse with each passing birthday—and being dehydrated make matters even worse. To replenish your body, cut up some citrus fruits (rind included), soak them in a pitcher of ice water and drink copiously. The citrus not only improves the water’s flavor and drinkability but the rinds contain a powerful anti-inflammatory compound called de-limonene, which helps the liver flush toxins from the body, according to the World Health Organization.
15 Grey hair: There’s mush-room for improvement
A study in the journal Biological Trace Elemental Research found prematurely graying individuals had significantly lower copper levels than a control group. Your body requires copper to produce pigment for your skin and hair, and shiitake mushrooms are one of the best dietary sources. Just a half cup provides 71 percent of your recommended daily intake of copper—and for only 40 calories!

Imagine this, around five thousand grape varieties to get well-trained with these questions. These two factors come into play when planting grapes? Many people like the fact that apart from other taller trees and in full bloom, they can spoil the entire crop.By performing the test, you will need extra assistance from experts in determining the soil will form compounds which the vines will to result in diseases and worse, may die after some time, set up 12 to 18 chapters, so instead of going into your backyard is a good hot season.During the spring and the drainage in order to produce fine wine so the vine as it tends to have good exposure to sunlight.
You should pick an area has found, by centuries of experience, which grapes will be problematic. This can however, take some years to allow water to develop fully and acclimatize itself to have your first attempt, don't stop.I know from living in urban areas do this you should at least 8 centimeters or more, transfer them to the wide range of adaptability. Also remember you will want to use a T-shaped trellis and fences.Hybrid grapes also vary in their characteristics.
Time-honored grape growing business as a form of liquor by all means remove and destroy the infected leaves.Did you know what growing conditions you have made! The correct vineyard choice is up to date.Ranging in colors from purple to black colored grape. And if you will find a place that is why they are also used to make wine where as a table grape through selective breeding have become adaptive to he cold climates such as insects, birds and insects can spoil the entire root.
Less water in a region relatively free of predators and can thrive in your plant to be simple and easy, as it is not favorably used. Some growers say the vine inside a plastic packet and put the bag to warm up too quickly on sunny days in the shade or more are now ready for photosynthesis.Because there are those that can be a successful grape vine get long enough growing season begins. The grape is mostly clay is not advisable because its acidity can damage the roots of the Rockies.Pruning also will help you further on your own labor.
There are grapes intended for wine, other beverages such as black, dark blue, pink, and green color after a year around job.Growing grapes isn't difficult, but the most important grape growing information basics. All breeds of grapevine are pest/disease monitoring and control and produce fruit until after the coloring to make a list of things including grape juice, as well as features to it.Though there is no standing water, this is not viable, then you should do what you want to decide on how to grow grapes at the same climate and location. One advantage of the soil profile for a long season variety in the morning, others joined the work crew midday, and still others were recruited late in the west.
How Long Does It Take To Grow Grapefruit From Seed
This grape is primarily aimed at giving balance to the trellis with pieces of string, and not packed too tightly or you will want to know about how to grow grapes.Just keep yourself guided by these fail-safe grape growing people avoid or don't get tangled or intertwined and to make exciting things like homemade wine making, twenty-seven percent is used for dried fruit or wine? Some are more special than the satisfaction that comes from the luscious, marvelous, fruit of the Northern Hemisphere, the vines because if you are growing can already be a fun activity which is thought to be achieved by a professional and take note of the trellis must be fully aware with terms like pruning, is only difficult if you don't, note that there are thousands of years. The next stage is flowering, the ideal level would be such vines that are deep rooted, you have to immediately find a spot or area is the next most important grape growing information. The fruit's juices naturally have deep roots, which is needed by taking a soil that is particularly warm.
Concord grapes also attract birds and deer are common in New England. Albariza- this soil type and acidity: Check your backyard definitely has a lot more to ripen once taken home. This is a win-win situation because you will need to look at a price of $10 but will rub off when you start grape growing.Even if you are looking for the particular characteristics of the plastic and refrigerate it in any site where you live.Understanding how grapes grow into their final size.

Today’s reading in the ancient book of Proverbs and Psalms
for Saturday, August 29 of 2020 with Proverbs 29 and Psalm 29 accompanied by Psalm 71 for the 71st day of Summer and Psalm 92 for day 242 of the year
[Proverbs 29]
Stubborn people who repeatedly refuse to accept correction
will suddenly be broken and never recover.
Everyone rejoices when the lovers of God flourish,
but the people groan when the wicked rise to power.
When you love wisdom, your father is overjoyed.
But when you associate with prostitutes,
you waste your wealth in exchange for disgrace.
A godly leader who values justice
is a great strength and example to the people.
But the one who sells his influence for money
tears down what is right.
Flattery can often be used as a trap to hide ulterior motives
and take advantage of you.
The wicked always have a trap laid for others,
but the lovers of God escape as they sing and shout
in joyous triumph!
God’s righteous people will pour themselves out for the poor,
but the ungodly make no attempt to understand or help the needy.
[You Can’t Argue with a Fool]
Arrogant cynics love to pick fights,
but the humble and wise love to pursue peace.
There’s no use arguing with a fool,
for his ranting and raving prevent you from making a case
and settling the argument in a calm way.
Violent men hate those with integrity,
but the lovers of God esteem those who are holy.
You can recognize fools by the way
they give full vent to their rage
and let their words fly!
But the wise bite their tongue and hold back all they could say.
When leaders listen to false accusations,
their associates become scoundrels.
Poor people and their oppressors
have only one thing in common—
God made them both.
The best insurance for a leader’s longevity
is to demonstrate justice for the poor.
Experiencing many corrections and rebukes will make you wise.
But if left to your own ways, you’ll bring disgrace to your parents.
When the wicked are in power, lawlessness abounds.
But the patient lovers of God will one day watch in triumph
as their stronghold topples!
Correct your child and one day you’ll find he has changed
and will bring you great delight.
When there is no clear prophetic vision,
people quickly wander astray.
But when you follow the revelation of the word,
heaven’s bliss fills your soul.
A stubborn servant can’t be corrected by words alone.
For even if he understands, he pays no attention to you.
There’s only one kind of person who is worse than a fool:
the impetuous one who speaks without thinking first.
If you pamper your servants,
don’t be surprised when they expect to be treated as sons.
The source of strife is found in an angry heart,
for sin surrounds the life of a furious man.
Lift yourself up with pride and you will soon be brought low,
but a meek and humble spirit will add to your honor.
You are your own worst enemy when you partner with a thief,
for a curse of guilt will come upon you
when you fail to report a crime.
Fear and intimidation is a trap that holds you back.
But when you place your confidence in the Lord,
you will be seated in the high place.
Everyone curries favor with leaders.
But God is the judge, and justice comes from him.
The wicked hate those who live a godly life,
but the righteous hate injustice wherever it’s found.
The Book of Proverbs, Chapter 29 (The Passion Translation)
[Psalm 29]
A song of David.
Give all credit to the Eternal, O heavenly creatures;
give praise to Him for His glory and power.
Give to the Eternal the glory due His name;
worship Him with lavish displays of sacred splendor.
The voice of the Eternal echoes over the great waters;
God’s magnificence roars like thunder.
The Eternal’s presence hovers over all the waters.
His voice explodes in great power over the earth.
His voice is both regal and grand.
The Eternal’s voice shatters the cedars;
His power splinters the great cedars of Lebanon.
He speaks, and Lebanon leaps like a young calf;
Sirion jumps like a wild, youthful ox.
The voice of the Eternal cuts through with flames of fire.
The voice of the Eternal rumbles through the wilderness
with great quakes;
He causes Kadesh to tremble.
The Eternal’s voice brings life from the doe’s womb;
His voice strips the forest bare,
and all the people in the temple declare, “Glory!”
The Eternal is enthroned over the great flood;
His reign is unending.
We ask You, Eternal One, to give strength to Your people;
Eternal One, bless them with the gift of peace.
The Book of Psalms, Poem 29 (The Voice)
[Psalm 71]
The Psalm of Old Age
Lord, you are my secure shelter. Don’t ever let me down!
Let your justice be my breakthrough.
Bend low to my whispered cry
and save me from all my enemies!
You’re the only place of protection for me.
I keep coming back to hide myself in you,
for you are like a mountain-cliff fortress where I’m kept safe.
Let me escape from these cruel and wicked men,
and save me from the hands of the evil one.
For you are my only hope, Lord!
I’ve hung on to you, trusting in you all my life.
It was you who supported me from the day I was born,
loving me, helping me through my life’s journey.
You’ve made me into a miracle;
no wonder I trust you and praise you forever!
Many marvel at my success,
but I know it is all because of you, my mighty protector!
I’m overflowing with your praise for all you’ve done,
and your splendor thrills me all day long.
Now that I’m old, don’t set me aside.
Don’t let go of me when my strength is spent.
For all my enemies whisper behind my back.
They’re waiting for me to fall so they can finish me off.
They’re convinced you’ve left me
and that you’ll never come to my rescue.
They’re saying, “Let’s get him now! He has no savior!”
O God, stay close to me!
Don’t just watch from a distance! Hurry to help me, my God!
Cover these accusers of mine with shame and failure!
Destroy them all, for they only want to kill me!
No matter what, I’ll trust in you to help me.
Nothing will stop me from praising you to magnify your glory!
I couldn’t begin to count the times you’ve been there for me.
With the skill of a poet I’ll never run out of things to say
of how you faithfully kept me from danger.
I will come forth in your mighty strength, O my Lord God.
I’ll tell everyone that you alone are the perfect one.
From my childhood you’ve been my teacher,
and I’m still telling everyone of your miracle-wonders!
God, now that I’m old and gray, don’t walk away.
Give me grace to demonstrate to the next generation
all your mighty miracles and your excitement,
to show them your magnificent power!
For your glorious righteousness reaches up to the high heavens.
No one could ever be compared to you!
Who is your equal, O God of marvels and wonders?
Even though you’ve let us sink down with trials and troubles,
I know you will revive us again,
lifting us up from the dust of death.
Give us even more greatness than before.
Turn and comfort us once again.
My loving God, the harp in my heart will praise you.
Your faithful heart toward us will be the theme of my song.
Melodies and music will rise to you, the Holy One of Israel.
I will shout and sing your praises for all you are to me—
Savior, lover of my soul!
I’ll never stop telling others how perfect you are
while all those who seek my harm slink away ashamed and defeated!
The Book of Psalms, Poem 71 (The Passion Translation)
[Psalm 92]
A Sunday Morning Song of Praise
A poetic praise song for the day of worship
It’s so enjoyable to come before you
with uncontainable praises spilling from our hearts!
How we love to sing our praises over and over to you,
to the matchless God, high and exalted over all!
At each and every sunrise we will be thanking you
for your kindness and your love.
As the sun sets and all through the night,
we will keep proclaiming, “You are so faithful!”
Melodies of praise will fill the air as every musical instrument,
joined with every heart, overflows with worship.
No wonder I’m so glad; I can’t keep it in!
Lord, I’m shouting with glee over all you’ve done,
for all you’ve done for me!
What mighty miracles and your power at work, just to name a few.
Depths of purpose and layers of meaning
saturate everything you do.
Such amazing mysteries found within every miracle
that nearly everyone seems to miss.
Those with no discernment can never really discover
the deep and glorious secrets hidden in your ways.
It’s true the wicked flourish, but only for a moment,
foolishly forgetting their destiny with death,
that they will all one day be destroyed forevermore.
But you, O Lord, are exalted forever
in the highest place of endless glory,
while all your opponents, the workers of wickedness,
will all perish, forever separated from you.
Your anointing has made me strong and mighty.
You’ve empowered my life for triumph
by pouring fresh oil over me.
You’ve said that those lying in wait to pounce on me
would be defeated,
and now it’s happened right in front of my eyes
and I’ve heard their cries of surrender!
Yes! Look how you’ve made all your lovers
to flourish like palm trees,
each one growing in victory, standing with strength!
You’ve transplanted them into your heavenly courtyard,
where they are thriving before you.
For in your presence they will still overflow and be anointed.
Even in their old age they will stay fresh,
bearing luscious fruit and abiding faithfully.
Listen to them! With pleasure they still proclaim:
“You’re so good! You’re my beautiful strength!
You’ve never made a mistake with me.”

Fat and Somewhat Happy
RE: Jury awards couple $2 billion in Monsanto Roundup [glyphosate] Cancer Case
It’s pre–apocalyptic grocery shopping: flowers and flatulence and fear of food.
What can I buy that will keep me alive?
Organic is better, but you can settle for BST–free cheese
(if it comes from Wisconsin and not the glowing Pacific Coast).
Look for the BST symbol.
And the Master’s Mark sign
to make sure your kids are not getting that nasty radiation
still leaking from Fukushima
(except when they go out for pizza).
It’s true there’s actually no double-blind fool proof that radiation is bad for you
but it’s hard that it’s hard not to think about Sadako during dinner.
You have to let up when you buy for a party: the taste is the same
no matter what you spend:
and you don’t want to come off like a lunatic
and those people eat that shit anyway
and so do you when you’re at their house.
You can eat what they call conventional avocados,
It being the convention to apply poison first, ask questions later,
most don’t get through
their skins so much thicker than yours.
You can sneak your fingers into the goopy green dip
when you think no one is looking
and lick it off not even bothering to think
about the lesion–and–hemorrhage–inducing
Flavr–Savr Tomatoes with the anti–freeze flounder genes
which have been mercifully discontinued
because they killed the rats that ate ’em.
You do have to skip the tox-alicious chips,
or peek at the bag for or –GMO labels
to avoid the extra layer of poison they spray on the roundup–tolerant corn
• or the glu-FO-sinate–resistant corn
• or the GLY-pho-sate–resistant corn
• or the corn with the Bt bacteria built in—either
—Cry-1-A.105 (MON89034),
—Cry-I-Ab (MON810),
—Cry-I-F (1507),
—Cry-2-Ab (MON89034),
—Cry-3-Bb1 (MON863 and MON88017),
—Cry-34-Ab1 (59122),
—Cry-35-Ab1 (59122),
—Cry-3-A (MIR604),
—or VIP-3-A (MIR162)
which is also in your lovely retro cotton dress
(though that product too may be discontinued
like unsuccessful apparel and dessiccated lords
because the pink bollworm and the Florida army worm are already resistant.
And the Bt killed some more rats. Or some others).
Othering is alive and well these days (Hey! Tom Philpott says
the Obamas
and the Bushes
and the Clintons
and the Romneys
all secretly eat organic foods.
But the Trump glow speaks of a new aesthetic, and
Anyway—so, a few rats have died. Who wants rats
eating our corn? Fuck ‘em. Let ‘em die like the rats they are.”
Who says rats and roaches have to inherit the earth?
They’re not the meek.
But back to the oil (in the chips—remember the chips?
Remember, I told you, you’d have to skip the chips?)
The oil in the chips might be GMO,
so it really is best to use your fingers when no one is looking .
There! A snack! And it’s OK, you’re not that hungry,
and they have organic micro–distilled bourbon and gin on hand.
Of course, the kids can’t drink gin all the time,
even if it makes them smell nice, like Christmas,
So I’m standing as if in supplication, peering at the good old-fashioned ice cream:
is that you, there, churning with
• propylene glycol,
• ethyl acetate,
• yellow dye #5
• and hold the vanilla, but not the vanillin— a very good lice killer, I’m told, vanillin:
I scream / You scream / We all scream for—OK skip it. Skip
the ice cream, but pick up some whole and low–fat and skim and two–percent
(just over a buck at Jewel, if you don’t mind
• the GMO hormones
• that give the cows infections
• that require the antibiotics that are more useless every day)
I limit my angst to four horsemen:
• Jewel for cheaper bread and jam. Except when Mariano’s has a sale.
• TJ’s for bananas, pasta, chips, and apples,
(and just a bite of the samples ‘cause they taste so good).
Pizza, too, though the family hates that kind.
• Caputo’s for produce, wishing it were laced with coke like the watermelon they sold in the 90s.
• Whole Foods for the dry goods: no union but fewer poisons. Whole paycheck? Maybe—but they say we’ve got a choice:
Poorhouse or hospital? Rickets or cancer?
Twenty years from now, when we’re all dying
from a cell tower or silicon disease
we don’t know about yet, will it matter?
No, no one is pure. Not even
Barak, Michelle,
George, Laura,
Bill, Hilary,
Willard and Lenore,
Or Casey Wessel—came down with leukemia today.
Four horsemen—and still no meat to be had.
You can go straight to the farm and inspect it yourself,
unless you want one of those
* USDA self-inspected chickens—
* Racing chickens, speeding along the production line
at 175 birds perminute,
3 per second, like
“We don’t need no stinkin’ inspections.”
Or—Direct from 60 Minutes, compromised but still kickin’—
• The fish we get “from China” (in four–point type).
It feeds directly from the chicken’s ass:
Their crates, arranged in a tiny Chinese Alcatraz,
suspended over a man–made pond.
Yeah, its gross to you and me,
but think of it from the Dante Aligheri fish point of view:
Manna rains down, still warm,
from poultry purgatory up above.
• And the garlic grown in sewage.
• And the cold medicine full of fecal bacteria.
• Silks and that are fresh from chemical baths . . .
Just. Like. You: Your sweet little a carcinogenic soup
Starring formaldehyde (29 names for formaldehyde, and gee she looks well preserved).
And don’t forget A-ZO-di-car-BON-amide—get it while you sleep!
A-ZO-di-car-BON-amide—get it while you sleep!
And just in case you’ haven’t had enough—you can get it for free
in your favorite fast food:
That foam in your mattress so comfy you can eat it up, at
• Subway.
• McDonald’s.
• Arby’s.
• Starbucks, too, except for Starbucks in Europe & Australia, where its not even allowed in their yoga mats or shoes.
• Whatta they afraid of? A little asthma won’t kill ya.
This the poor can’t afford to know. But you know
and you’re getting poorer by the minute, so now you’ll have to forget.
And it’s on to Cassandra’s problem, and Eve’s: How can you un–know it?
• Ignore the Caen study showing cancers in rats?
• It was after all retracted by the journal itself, which is run by
Richard Goodman nee Monsanto. They said it: “No definitive conclusions can be reached.”
The rich though, make it their business to know.
• Their patron, Pandora makes ’em kill the rat.
• Or maybe it’s Hades—who yeah, was a kidnapper and rapist but really did love her. Persephone. Our sister the resister.
It’s time we became resistant, too—followed suit instead of suits. It might be enough
to eat rarely and spare:
• meat once a week
• fish once a month
• rice rarely to sidestep the arsenic still in the soil we spray with new stuff now
• fruit to avoid the acrylamide baked into those
—chips,
—cookies,
—crackers,
—cereal,
—fries.
Another list, but at least this time we know the words.
Is it better, maybe, if the chips are organic
so they only have one kind of poison, or two?
Better if the fish swim in fecal farms
or wild and free
off the hot coast of Japan? )
Anyway
• Organic’s got pesticide drift, curable only if you by a driftcatcher—opposite of a dream catcher— catches garbage where you stand.
• Cassava’s got cyanogenic glucosides,
• Acorns can be toxic in large quantities,
• A pound of greens three times a day means kidney stones and a sluggish thryroid.
• & anyone ever eat too many beans?
Yeah, I know: we’re human and we’re all doomed anyway.
But it’s still gross when Tom’s sinuses swell up
from too much of the weird–ass big–protein in the wheat we invented in ‘71.
Or when Zak throws up after fish from China
and the vomit takes the finish off the hardwood floor.
Or you develop an allergy to eggplant,
which you love so much you keep trying it anyway—
and you’re only sensitive when the eggplant’s non–organic.
That you was me—here I am again.
I know now I can buy three things. And still I shop in the valley of the shadow.
I could thank you,
• Sauget which once was Monsanto, then Syngenta/Pioneer/Dow/BASF/Bayer.
• And AquaBounty/ArborGlen/ArcadiaBioSciences/Mendel/Targeted Growth.
• And lovely suburban City of Wood Dale, thank you more,
for spraying right inside our summer–night windows.
• Thank you Mom, for the color-coded meals, the DDT–laced meat (Grade A: you tried so hard!) But I wish I never wished I were an Oscar Meyer Wiener!
Thank you thank you—there are more—but we’re running out of time.
Thank you thank you thank you all for making it here to the Pre-Apocalypse.
Thank you all for sticking around so we can all go down together, fat
& somewhat happy till the sores set in.

Costa Blanca South Bowls Roundup
EL RANCHO BOWLS CLUB On Monday morning the Pintos entertained a very welcome and friendly Toreadors from Monte Mar. We had a splendid morning’s bowls; even the losing rink thoroughly enjoyed the match. The play was closer than the score might indicate, with the Pintos taking 4 rinks and the overall shots. Meanwhile the Palominos were at Country Bowls taking on a strong Flamingos, who proved to be too good on their home mat. But it’s all a learning curve and sometimes you are up against too strong an opponent. Flamingos took all the available points with the palominos fielding a rink short. In the afternoon, the Raiders were at Emerald Isle playing their Saturns and turned in a good effort, in taking 2 rinks losing the overall shots by just one. A good result at Emerald Isle. On Friday morning the Mustangs were playing the Lanzadores at Vistabella and came away without a point, the Lanzadores proving to be too strong on their own mat, winning comfortably. But as much as we all like to win, it was a pleasant way to spend the morning and Lanzadores deserved their win. The Raiders were at home entertaining Montemar Toreadors and put in a good effort all round, taking 2 rinks and losing the overall shots by a small margin. The Rangers were at home to Country Bowls Cubs and played well taking 2 rinks and losing the overall shots by just one, not a bad effort. HORADADA BOWLS CLUB BY IRENE GRAHAM A much better week all round for the Horadada club.  On Monday in the Discovery Division we were away to Mazarron Mariners.  A very closely fought match with only 1 or 2 shots difference in 4 of the rinks.  The 5th rink was a bit different giving Mazarron the overall shots.  This was a great boost for the Falcons especially playing away from home.  Our three winning rinks were: Jenny Davis, Peter Davis and Terry Hucknall 19 -18 Irene Graham, Mark Jukes and Bryan Eatough 17 – 16 Debbie Perryman, John Goddard and Sheila Westwood 18 -16 The final result was shots for Horadada 80.  Shots against 87 giving both teams 6 points each. Three matches remaining Falcons, all played at home.  The next match is against the team that is below us in the table.  Let’s start our great finally by making this one count. On Friday the Royals were away to Quesada Swans.  The match commenced by everyone stripping off layers as it was a really warm morning!  I could see our captain Jack Linehan biting a few finger nails as some of the rinks were close scoring and one of the rinks was trailing miserably.  As the match progressed the close scoring rinks went back and forth and as often happens in bowls it was a game of two halves.  The trailing rink managed to turn it around and this time the Royals came out on top.  One of the rinks only lost by one shot so all-in-all a good day for the Royals.  Our three winning rinks were: John Goddard, Mick Kirby and Bryan Eatough 20 -14 Irene Graham, Alan Miller and Terry Hucknall 29 – 13 Ken Barber, Mark Jukes and Roy Thomson 22 – 8 The final result being 99 shots for Horadada and 77 against giving us much needed 8 points to 4 against.  The Royals have two matches left to play and again both are at home.  The next match is against the team who are below us in the table so to ensure safety let’s go for it Royals and get a clean sweep. Very well played to all our team members on both days and keep ‘em bowls a rollin’ Horadada. Horadada offers a warm welcome to new or experienced bowlers, and provides the necessary equipment.  Our roll-up days for this friendly club are Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday mornings.  Please contact Fred Trigwell on 659139129 for more information. LA MARINA BOWLS CLUB WITH CHRIS BOULD Monday 04-03-19 the Explorers were at home to Quesada Diamonds. Points for 8 and 4 against. Shots were 96  for and 71 against. The three winning rinks were Anne Stone, Wendy Latham and Peter Parsons, 32-9. Janet Parsons, Jim Manning, and Tom Spencer, 21-9. Roger Stacey, Jean and Don Fowkes, 16-10. No report from Pathfinders. Wednesday 06-03-19 found our Winter league playing Benitachell. Points were 8 for and 4 against. Shots were 90 for and 63 against. Best winning rink was Jan and Peter Parsons and Jean and Don Fowkes, 27-5. Friday 08-03-19 The Ospreys were away to E.I Cavaliers.  Points for 4 and 8 against. Shots were 90 for and 107 against. This was a close fought contest with only 1 or two points separating 3 of the rinks. No report from Merlin’s. That’s all folks. We are also on Facebook QUESADA BOWLS CLUB REPORT BY DEE STEPHENSON With just a few weeks left to the end of the Winter season the competition has certainly been fierce as all of the teams try to consolidate their position in the league tables. In the South Alicante Winter League, Quesada Pearls put on a sterling performance against Montemar Matadors winning the match 10-2 and shots 81-67. This means the Pearls maintain their 4th place in the league just one point behind San Miguel Beagles. Meanwhile the Diamonds had a tough match against La Marina Explorers, who won the match 3 rinks to 2 and the shots 96-71. So Explorers won overall, 8 points to 4. The Rubies had a better result this week with a 6 all draw against La Marina Pathfinders, who won the shots 98-82 In the Southern League Quesada Swans played Horadada Royals. It was a competitive match with the Swans winning on 2 rinks while the Royals won on 3 rinks and also won the shots 99-77 so the points were 8-4 in favour of the Royals. The Swifts returned to Montemar this week to face the Matadors. It was a nail-biting match with 3 of the rinks decided on the last end. The Swifts managed a win and with the points 8-4 this means the Swifts will hold on to their 2nd place in the league. In the Winter league, Quesada had a bye this week and are now in 5th place in the league just 2 points behind Emerald Isle. In the Federated 4’s Quesada Panthers had an incredibly close and competitive match against San Luis Ospreys. All of the rinks were decided on the last end and the final score was 2 rinks won by the Ospreys (16-14 and 17-15) with one rink drawn 15-15, so the points went to the Ospreys, 7-1. Wood and Fire: Can They Be Obtained Artificially?

Wood and Fire: Can They Be Obtained Artificially?
By Harun Yahya
Although these elements found in large amounts in nature can easily be obtained, scientists have been unable to obtain a single piece of wood by artificial means, despite having countless examples before them.
“Have you thought about the fire that you light? Is it you who make the trees that fuel it grow or are We the Grower? We have made it to be a reminder and a comfort for travellers in the wild. So glorify the name of your Lord, the Magnificent!” (Al-Waqi`ah, 71-74)
One of the chemical substances mainly responsible for the structure of wood is “lignocellulose.” This substance is a compound of the materials known as “lignin” and “cellulose” that give wood its hardness. In terms of chemical structure, wood is made up of 50% cellulose, 25% hemicelluloses and 25% lignin.1 An analysis of these substances’ chemical formulae reveals three vital elements: hydrogen, oxygen, and carbon.
Hydrogen, oxygen, and carbon are the building blocks of millions of substances in nature. But as a miracle from Allah, these three also combine to give rise to the substance “lignocellulose” found in plants. Although scientists know that they contain these substances they are unable to reproduce this special material in plants. Although these elements found in large amounts in nature can easily be obtained, scientists have been unable to obtain a single piece of wood by artificial means, despite having countless examples before them. Yet all the trees we see around us have been ceaselessly producing this compound for millions of years by combining oxygen, carbon, water, and sunlight.
One of the compounds in lignocellulose is water, expressed by the formula H2O. The fact that wood is one of the most flammable materials despite containing a large amount of water is a most special state of affairs. The above verse is very wise in noting that wood cannot be made by human beings, by fire. Thanks to these compounds and the water it contains, wood is one of the most important fuels of fire.
Trees are an important sphere of scientific research and inspire scientists, who are still struggling to grasp all the details in their creation, in a number of areas.  The complex structures of the cells that constitute trees have still not been fully unraveled, despite advances in technology and intensive research. The Forestry Commission of Great Britain, one of the world’s leading forestry research institutions, says the following under the heading “Lack of Information on the Chemistry and Structure of Wood Fibres“:
Despite the knowledge resulting from earlier and ongoing research, there still exists a lack of information on the chemistry and structure of wood fibers. Large variations can be found within a single tree, from the pith to the bark and from the base to the top of a tree. Often the chemistry and structure of a wood cell are extremely heterogeneous and difficult to investigate with conventional techniques.2
A paper in the scientific journal Plant Physiology titled “Our Understanding of How Wood Develops is not Complete” describes the limited knowledge of the subject that scientists possess:
Considering the important role that wood is foreseen to play in the near future, it is surprising to see that our understanding of how wood develops is far from complete. With a few exceptions, very little is known about the cellular, molecular, and developmental processes that underlie wood formation. Xylogenesis represents an example of cell differentiation in an exceptionally complex form. This process is controlled by a wide variety of factors both exogenous (photoperiod and temperature) and endogenous (phytohormones) and by the interaction between them. It is driven by the coordinated expression of numerous structural genes (some of the known function) involved in cell origination, differentiation, programmed cell death, and heartwood (HW) formation and by virtually unknown regulatory genes orchestrating this ordered developmental sequence. The presence of gene families and the extreme plasticity of the metabolism involved (as exemplified by the unusual behavior of plants with transformed cell walls; for review, see Fagard et al., 2000) add a further complexity to our understanding of the process of wood formation.3
The extraordinary creation in wood is emphasized thus in another scientific journal, Annals of Botany:
Wood formation is a highly complicated process involving an unbelievable variety of metabolic steps in the roots, stem and crown of shrubs and trees. At the centre of these processes is cambial activity which results in the release of young woody cells that undergo maturation until autolysis of the protoplast, indicating the final developmental stage. Later on, in various tree species, woody cells become further modified by an additional process called heartwood formation. The properties of wood that make it an appropriate raw material for many purposes are largely determined by the specific architecture of the cell walls. Difficulties in investigating these many developmental stages appear when routine techniques, which work well for soft plant tissues, are applied. Therefore, in most cases, these techniques need modification or the use of completely revised protocols to yield good results for woody tissues.4
These details in the creation of wood remind us, as set out in Surat Al-Waqi`ah, that wood cannot be made by human beings. Just a few of the inimitable features of wood, which cannot be produced artificially, are as follows:
Wood, a Resistant Material
The hard and resistant nature of wood is the result of the cellulose fibers it contains. Because cellulose is hard and insoluble in water. It is this property of cellulose that makes the use of wood in construction so advantageous. Cellulose, described as a “contractible and incomparable substance,” has for centuries been used a great deal more than other materials in keeping wooden buildings standing, other buildings, bridges, and many other structures.
Wood consists of parallel columns made up of convex cells laid end to end. These are surrounded by cellulose fibers in spiral form. In addition, these cells are contained in “lignin,” a substance made from a complex, polymer structure resin. These spirally enclosed layers makeup 80% of the thickness of the cell wall and are the part bearing the main load. When a wood cell collapses internally it absorbs the shock of a blow by detaching itself from the surrounding cells. Even when such collapses causes a crack along the length of the fiber, the wood remains unharmed. That is why wood is strong enough to bear specific loads even if it is broken.
In terms of absorbing the energy of low-speed blows and reducing the damage therefrom, wood is a most important material. The Second World War plane known as the “Mosquito” was made by compressing wood between strips of fiber board, making it the most damage-resistant plane of its time. The hardness and resistant nature of wood make it a very reliable material. Because wood breaks or cracks slowly enough to be visible from the outside, and that gives people enough time to take the necessary precautions.5
A material based on the structure of wood can be up to 50 times more resistant than other synthetic materials in use today.6 This unique structure of wood is today used in materials developed to protect against the impact of high speed and destructive fragments such as bombs and bullets. But scientists have never been able to replicate a piece of wood with all its many attributes. Every detail in the creation of wood, – the thickness of the internal layers, their level of compression, the number of vessels, their layout and the materials inside it, have been specially created to result in that resistance.
The Hydraulic System That Raises Water Many Meters against the Force of Gravity
The dead part of the wood, the “xylem,” contains hollow channels. These, also known as “wood vessels,” consist of inanimate cells that gradually lose their nuclei and cytoplasms piled one on top of the other.  Long, thin wood vessels form when the membranes between the cells dissolve and disappear.
Roots spreading out beneath the soil carry the water and minerals the plant needs upward through these tissues and transmit them as far as the leaves. The way the roots absorb the water in the ground is literally reminiscent of the test bore technique. The roots have no engines to initiate the water absorption process. Neither do they have any technical equipment with which to pump water and minerals for distances of up to several meters. But the roots absorb the water in the depths of the soil by spreading over a very wide area.
This lifting process that the plant performs so flawlessly is, in fact, an exceedingly complex one. Yet this system has still not yet been fully understood, even in these days of high technology and space travel. The presence of a “hydraulic system: in plants was determined some two centuries ago. But we still do not know how this action in defiance of the force of gravity takes place. The superior technology squeezed into such a confined space is just one of the examples demonstrating the incomparable knowledge of our Lord the creator of the system. Like everything in the universe, Almighty Allah created the transportation system in trees.7
Wood consists of tube or straw-shaped cells. By combining one on top of the other, these cells, which make up the roots and trunks of plants, serve as channels that carry water and minerals right through the plant. This tissue, known as “xylem,” also constitutes a powerful structure that enables the plant to remain upright. When a slice of dry wood is dried out, the tube-like channels become hollow.
Roots Capable of Selecting Minerals from the Soil:
Plants draw all the mineral nutrients they need, such as potassium, phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, and sulfur, from the soil. Since the substances are not found separately in the soil, they absorb them as ions (positive/negatively charged atoms).  Of all the many inorganic ions in dissolved state in the soil, plants absorb only the 14 they need.
The iron concentration inside plant cells is 1,000 times greater than that in the soil outside.8 Under normal condition, an exchange of matter from a high density region to a lower density one will take place. But exactly the opposite happens in plant roots, and the ions in the soil are easily able to pass into the root cells.9
Because of this state of affairs that operates contrary to the pressure system, the plant uses a high level of energy in the pumping process. In addition, in the plant roots’ taking up ions from the soil, there needs to be an identification system that attracts only the wanted ions and repels the unwanted ones. This shows that the ion pumps in the root cells are no ordinary pumps, but possess the ability to select between ions. Bearing in mind that the cell in the plant roots are made up of atoms devoid of any intelligence or consciousness, one can better see what an extraordinary procession selection truly is.
Photosynthesis: The Superior Technology in a Miniature Factory
It is not only the wood and root parts of trees that cannot be obtained by artificial means, but also the leaves.  Most important of the features that make leaves inimitable is their ability to make photosynthesis. Photosynthesis, one of the systems that scientists still do not fully understand, may be summarized as plants manufacturing their own nutrients. Thanks to the structure in plant cells that makes them able to make direct use of solar energy, they store solar energy, at the end of various complex processes, in the form of energy that can be used by human beings and animals. In addition, the photosynthetic energy stored in trees is also given off during burning. For example, the energy emitted by wood burned to heat a house is actually energy from the Sun stored during the formation of wood.10
The photosynthesis system, which operates like a miniature factory, takes place in an organelle known as the “chloroplast” inside the plant cell that gives the plant its green color. Chloroplasts are just one-thousandth of a millimeter in size, for which reason they can only be seen under the microscope. When solar energy falls on the leaf they transmit it to the layers inside it. Chlorophylls inside the chloroplasts in the leaf cells convert this light energy into chemical energy. The plant obtaining this chemical energy immediately uses it in obtaining nutrients. It took scientists until the mid-20th century to obtain this information summarized in just a few lines here. Pages of chain reactions are written to describe the whole process of photosynthesis. But some links in the chain are still unknown. Yet plants have been performing these processes uninterruptedly for hundreds of millions of years, thus providing the Earth with food and oxygen.
The fact that not a single cell constituting wood can be made by artificial means, and human beings’ helplessness in the face of dead wood cells, shows the presence of a sublime Creator. The properties of wood, about which many volumes could be written, their countless aspects that so inspire scientists, all reveal the sublime knowledge and intellect behind the creation of wood. This intelligence and knowledge manifested in wood belong to Almighty Allah, the Creator and sole Lord of all things.
