Shoutout to this draft I made a couple hours ago when I suddenly had an epiphany for how I could fix a part of my story and I was so excited that the only way I could express it is to write whatever this is but I couldn’t post it because I didn’t have internet
also it got marked as mature for some reason
#mood honestly#OHHH OHH. WA#there is pure happiness behind those words#I don’t know if I’ll keep the idea that I came up with but it’s so much better than what I had before#ties up loose ends while also keeping it vague like I wanted mmmm#and the ending isn’t super depressing now!!! sort of!!!#it is Not final so I won’t yap about it just yet but#I think I might be able to give gourdie a somewhat happy ending….that is all I wanted…..yes…..#cause like damn at first she was just miserable by the end with no happiness in sight. which didn’t really match the rest of the story#cause it’s more so lighthearted even when there’s like. death and stuff#like. bad shit happens but it’s not an emotionally charged angsty story#if people do find it sad despite the jokey tone then all the better because that means I can have my cake and eat it too#but my point is simply that Gourdie’s ending did NOT match up with anything else#she was just left completely depressed by the end#BUT I CAN FIX IT. I THINK. STILL WORKINH IT OUT IN MY MIND#TRYING TO MAKE SURE IT WOULDNT RETCON ANYTHING PREVIOUSLY ESTABLISHED#perhaps it makes the ending a bit less impactful but who tf thinks I’m going for impact!!!#gourdie gets to mysteriously disappear too. as a treat.#and it also plugs that plot hole…yes….good…..#I’m just rambling at this point hey guys how ya doin#pdbc#not a pikmin post#more pdbc posts are coming cause I spent like 4 hours today writing#by that I mean like. 4 hours of just trying to fix the ending. but I kinda did it soooo#point is I rarely have scripts for certain sections and I now have a script for a sliver of a section so that’s a win#this is a huge wall of text uhhhh#I’ve been yapping about pdbc an unhealthy amount lately and I’ll never stop#my friend wants to know the lore as well so I’ll have to find a way to explain it all to her#< it’ll be easier for her to understand actually cause of reasons#anyway I’ll shut up now bye bye

Paradox Edition AU comic in which Bud is adopted by a group of incorrigible miscreants, much to Dusknoir’s chagrin:
#Bud is the bait for 99% of the sableye crew’s pranks now#she’ll say something vaguely out of character that sounds like a line she was fed#and EVERYONE tenses in a 3 mile radius#‘the Sableye are around here somewhere… but WHERE… and WHAT ARE THEY PLOTTING’#she doesn’t really enjoy pranks once the novelty wears off but she loves being helpful and included!#Dusknoir shall never know another moment’s peace#the present is a gift: paradox edition au#stuff by sofie#pmd2#pmd eos#pmd explorers#pmd sky#pmd#pokémon mystery dungeon#pmd sableye#pmd au#pmd comic#pokemon mystery dungeon#pmd hero

there's an essay jumbled up in my brain about dunmeshi's beginning and how clever and deceptive it is as a sleight-of-hand trick that distracts the audience from the depth and scope of the worldbuilding and foreshadowing that's being set up the entire time by dangling zany characters and wacky dishes and biology fun facts in front of us, and how that serves to catch invested viewers off guard when those elements come to the forefront, but also how it works against it with other viewers wanting "more" and not seeing it because the plot bait isn't laid out up front
how people getting frustrated with the characters "not taking things seriously" is mirrored and refuted in the confrontation between Laios and Shuro. how the characters' attitudes aren't just a result of shallow low-stakes "comedy rules" where nothing matters, but are an extension of their personalities (Laios's nonstandard expression of emotions being offputting even to people he knows) and the world and social environment (adventurers being desensitized to death and injury because resurrection magic is commonplace). the way the party refers to "saving Falin" instead of "retrieving Falin's corpse," indicating that they still see her with full personhood, and how that phrasing leads to some readers/viewers believing that Falin is alive in the dragon's stomach, conscious of being slowly digested while the party carelessly fucks around "wasting time." how the weird tonal dissonance makes sense in-universe and yet is deliberately challenged more and more the deeper the party goes
all the character building and pieces of lore slowly weaving together the shape of the larger world, laying the groundwork for the major themes that will surface later. so much is right there in the "low-stakes" early episodes if you know what you're looking for (or pass the perception checks).
it can be so satisfying to see new viewers/readers pick up on the clues even in the earliest "simple" episodes, or notice new things and make connections yourself....and it can also be frustrating to see people dismiss oddities and dissonance as shallow or bad writing because they don't expect a "cooking anime" to have depth like that. why try to question and understand and peel back the layers when you don't expect there to be any layers?
why can't laios take things seriously for once?
#mypost#i'm majorly out of practice for doing any real critical cohesive writing lol#trying to put this into coherent words has been such a mess so here's a vague gesture at my thought process about it#it's both my favorite and the most frustrating thing to see#because i've seen SO MANY people say they dropped the show after a couple eps thinking they know what it's about and where it's going#a cute but ultimately unsustainable gimmick#people for whom the characters and the food/biology infodumping weren't enough of a hook#but i wouldn't change anything about the structure to put a more obvious plot hook in the beginning#because it would give the game away TOO much#i LOVE how the audience has to acclimate to the characters' attitudes about death#only for our assumption that it's all normal and fine in this world to be thrown back in our faces#how we're left to notice the winged lion appearing in statues and carvings and coins and armor in the background#long long before it's ever brought up as a real entity by the plot#the history of the kingdom laid out in plain view but nevermind that. magic painting food!#i've seen the language around falin and her resurrection cause so much confusion#but of COURSE the characters involved wouldn't directly say 'we need to get her corpse to revive it'#bc pragmatically they already understand that as their goal. it doesn't need to be stated out loud; it's just how this process works.#but also they don't SEE her as an object. a dead body.#they need to 'save her before she's digested.' 'the spell couldn't reach her in the dragon's stomach.' 'hang in there falin'#death isn't real to them. not really. and so it doesn't quite feel real to the audience either#not until they find her skull and that realization slams home#like......i keep comparing it to gravity falls#which is episodic and goofy in the beginning but also has a much more obvious plot hook to keep people interested#(a main character entering a secret bunker indicating that he's lying about his ignorance of the town's mysteries)#the main characters in gravity falls are AWARE that there is a mystery to be solved and are trying to find more information#but i don't think that approach would work as well for dm!#laios's goals were never that lofty. not until they HAD to be because the situation demanded it of him#it's the characters trying to solve one personal problem and finding themselves entrenched in something vast and dramatic#that they weren't even fully AWARE of when they set out. and we the audience are on that journey with them!#it's SUCH a good structure i wouldn't trade it for anything. but also. tragic to see people give up and dismiss it so fast.

im convinced many people who think they read dont actually read
like i was joking with my bf about how i dont understand when ppl say it took them months to get thru a novel cause ive always only ever been able to marathon hyperfixate read. like 3 sittings maximum no matter the length of the book. i will do nothing not even eat if need be. and he was like "itd be impossible to even comprehend all that- you dont even take notes!"
and yet anytime im in a fandom. ppl will be like "oh i missed all these things i didnt realize xyz was important" and im just like ???????????
like sure i get details confused and miss things sometimes but like. ???? not often? i struggle more with being bored waiting for the hints and implied narrative leads to wrap up. are you not consumed by the novel? how? clearly im understanding more than most people despite my unhealthy need to binge consume god damn
#forgive my huge ego when it comes to fiction but like#very rarely am i blindsided by a plot twist or even vaguely lead astray most forms of narrative hints are NOT SUBTLE#it doesnt take many clues for the logical path to become obvious????#and then its just waiting for anything the author HASNT already put in a big box of MYSTERY FOR LATER that is necessary to the details#like harrow wasnt? confusing or gaslightey to me at all? it was just? an unreliable narrator? which clues to reality sprinkled in pretty#nicely.#like have yall never been gaslit its not nearly that easy to peel out the truth when its ur brain jumbled to soup lmao

Gonna say something potentially controversial:
I think Heartcatch suffers from the Up phenomenon in that people remember it as an excellent, if not flawless masterpiece when it actually has One (1) excellent, if not flawless moment in the beginning and is otherwise nothing special.
#pretty cure#babs' musings#precure: heartcatch#i remember sitting there watching 4 episodes at a time and asking myself “so when does it get as Great as people say”#i admire how different it is in tone and style to other seasons. it really stands out in that regard!#but that doesn't make it automatically better (or worse) than other seasons#it was funnier.#but the story? really underwhelming imo#the only notable part about the plot was the very first scene that set the intrigue and mystery of Yuri's character#but what they deliver on that front was extremely disappointing for me#and all the other characters get pretty mid arcs as well#Tsubomi has anxiety about not being good at anything. nothing comes of that besides one or two insults from the villains.#Itsuki has to crossdress in order to continue the family business because her brother has vague illness#that's never confronted in any satisfying way. it just sorta fades away once she decides she likes being a girl#Erika's insecurity regarding her sister is honestly the most engaging of these arcs and that's because I have a little sister#I suppose I set my expectations too high for that season. but people call it The Best Precure Season when it's not even in my top 3 so far#and that's kinda concerning for me going forward#suite is also proving to be a huge bore for me. extremely artificial season going through the motions of the franchise#Hummy... save me. Hummy. Save me Hummy#I really don't want to struggle through 13 more unremarkable seasons in the hopes of recapturing the magic of Futari Wa and Fresh#argh. i hate not liking things#sorry for the rant in the tags.

watching Quantumania like:
#quantumania#watchnotes#wtf#it's not that i have questions. it's that they could've answered the questions by now but they're#purposely staving off answers until the second act. problem is there's no filler in the meantime.#characters are asking the same questions as the audience and the mom is like No it's too early to tell you that#and the natives are also avoiding answering questions to keep the frustrating mystery alive as long as possible. the plot is vague and conf#meanwhile the visual effects are like a distraction: we know you don't know whats happening rn but here -#have some big budget multicolor blinding deafening fight scenes to distract from the fact you know nothing#the dialogue is also trite. but my main annoyance is their treatment of plot progression. is this#what's been said about how marvel movies use a formula to craft what happens and when?#rather than making something enjoyable that also makes sense and doesn't try to aggresively disorient you?#anti mcu

oh, i think the reason i got So into serirei recently is that they push the same buttons in my brain that brotzly does. yeah, gimme a liar with a heart of gold who deeply hates himself but goes out of his way to help people around him, both strangers and those he cares about, and whose relationship with his boyfriend started out as help in a tough situation and grew into working together in an agency focusing on solving paranormal cases; and the boyfriend — a weirdo with supernatural powers who's socially awkward because he had years of his life stolen from him because of them, and who's traumatized by a nefarious organization that wanted to harness that power, who tries his best to build connections and be kind to people, and who's ultimately, unconditionally, unwaveringly in love with the liar-with-the-heart-of-gold, even in the face of having seen him at his absolute worst and lowest. and also they're both 30yo losers.
ywah, it all comes back to brotzly, it always does.
#dghda#dirk gently's holistic detective agency (tv 2016)#vika's personal dghda tag#vikarambles#brotzly#todd brotzman#dirk gently#mob psycho 100#serirei#serizawa katsuya#reigen arataka#*doofenshmirtz voice* two nickels isn't a lot but it's weird that it has happened twice#MP100 FANS PLEASE WATCH DGHDA 2016 ITS SO CRAZY & COLORFUL AND HAS HORRIBLE VAGUELY GAY PEOPLE IN IT WHO LEARN FROM THEIR MISTAKES AND GROW#it's a bbc america tv show with 2 seasons inspired by douglas adams books but with original plot#which constits of one huge and insanely convoluted mystery per season#that spans multiple independent but interconnected plot threads and a large ensemble cast#it has soft sci-fi elements! it has fantasy elements! it has extremely funny jokes! it has drama that gives me fucking heart palpitations!#it's so so good and incredibly engaging and exciting and the payoff at the end of each mystery is SO good!! please please give it a try#it doesn't have any teens in it though (the cast is comprised nearly Solely of 30yo losers — which i think serirei fans might appreciate)#also the main character looks very gay. i mean outright Fruity. if you think reigen's a flaming twink you haven't seen dirk gently

I don’t know if you’ve been asked this before, but what was your experience with detective mystery novels before umineko?
i've always gravitated towards stories with mysteries or something obtuse to puzzle over and figure out but i'm not actually that versed in detective fiction at all haha. the genres i'm normally into lean more towards horror and speculative/literary and also everything that homestuck is so while a lot of stuff i read does have central mysteries guiding their plots, the specific construction of detective mystery isn't something i am incredibly familiar with on the whole.
my closest experience to detective mystery fiction was actually when i was super into danganronpa as a teen and i ended up trying to write my own original killing game fan story. i never finished it and it's kind of cringe looking back at it but i did spend several years of my life trying to construct solid "hard but fair" murder mystery cases (i still have a bunch of files on my hard drive from when i planned it all out lol) that i think taught me a lot about the experience of a murder mystery from both the perspective of the writer and the reader. a lot of that was making up a guy in my head and imagining them trying to catch me out based on where their thinking would likely be at each stage. so then i was also thinking of my mystery but also how to throw this hypothetical guy off the scent while still making something solvable. the writing process was very much like chessboard spinning but if you put the chessboard in a 1 million rpm washing machine and turned into a weird psychological game of cat and mouse between me and a person that didn't necessarily exist.
the mysteries i published were kind of not that great (their conceits were "how can you find *the* culprit when the culprit is actually two people in tandem" and "an incredibly obvious case that becomes complicated by everybody else's assumptions and overthinking") since i wrote and planned them out when i was like 17 but the later cases i never got around to doing when i hit my stride and sketched out the rest of this story would have been way cooler (one murder was going to hinge around a really nasty wordplay trick to do with the time of death that technically wasn't a lie but was incredibly misleading and deceptive and another was an elaborate cause-effect chain involving a publicly witnessed indisputable suicide as the trigger) if i'd gotten around to completing the story. i will forever be haunted by this one particular locked double locked room murder i spent six months of my life sketching out down to the minute by minute positioning of the characters. it would have had the 2018 fanganronpa community trembling in their boots if i had ever realized my vision lmao.
anyway i guess my experience with detective mystery fiction is coming more from the position of a writer than a reader which i think comes through a little when you examine some of my thought processes (my approach at times is very much "if i was writing this story right now what would i do here" and then i search for evidence to try and back that up) even if i'm not super well-read or familiar with the genre outside of like one vn series lol. i know about making fiction and i know about keeping people guessing via revealing and concealing information and past a certain point most fiction operates under similar principles so that's how i got into understanding and approaching mystery. i think it's a fun genre, both to produce and to read now that i'm reading something that is more seriously presenting itself as a piece of detective mystery fiction! umineko is good because it really is scratching a specific kind of itch i never really address in my own writing these days because there's a specific time and occasion to produce these kinds of mysteries. hope this illuminates my understanding of/relationship to this genre a little more!
#nauseating-nostalgia#i always think writing detective/mystery fiction is fun and i should do it more but i never really get the chance haha#oh i also know vaguely about that infamous 'rules of detective fiction' list (i think it's also referenced in a zero escape game?)#specifically the 'secret doors/passageways are signs of a hack mystery writer and should be avoided at all costs' rule#which made me super mad when i was planning my danganronpa story because i did in fact have a secret passage plot point#and ended up scrapping it because i was afraid these detective fiction rules were taken seriously and everyone would trash my story lol#can't remember any of the other like million rules that were there except for that one that made teenage me feel SO insecure lmfao

doing this sort of deep and detailed worldbuilding that doesn't really happen in my litfic works (well worldbuilding is still there, but even when i write litfic in a fictional setting it's not the same as this speculative project where there's lots of specific lore) has felt really nice because it's something to hold onto and familiarise myself with before i jump into the draft, but also because i'm not trying to outline the story alongside that i'll still get all the ways that discovery writing benefits me. making me think about how whether you're plotting a story ahead of drafting or not these sort of pre drafting rituals are really helpful and can take so many different forms depending on the story + writer
#i think esp with discovery writing a big thing is understanding what your anchor is going into a draft#that helps you get the benefits of discovery writing but also keeps you like. grounded??#which i don't see talked about a lot probably bc of the 'flying by the seat of your pants' thing. which i think is a misconception#even when you ARE going into something fully unknowing. in that case the possibilities that come with unknowing is the anchor#because in that case the writer/story benefits from the questioning around their idea going into a draft. the mystery of it all#and then sometimes a very vague outline that gives you space to prioritise discovery writing is the anchor#basically something familiar to hold onto whilst you're uncovering everything around it#a lot of time for me it's the character but here it feels like the world itself#i dont think this is discovery writing specific but i think if you have an outline going in + prioritise plotting then like#thats most likely the anchor#dallon when he ponders new writing theory in the tags of a tumblr post#also i say not try to outline because inevitably with the worldbuilding im getting ideas and things#like understanding the lore means realising moments where certain lore is revealed etc.#but i'm not like. intentionally outlining ?? idk ?? we'll see#i tried outlining this last nano and it didnt really help me with prep and going in but it helped in the middle of the month

Just remembering Civil War II, where a new Inhuman named Ulysses with procognitive abilities is treated like the most important, ground-breaking thing ever, and all the super-heroes fight over whether they should use his abilities to predict crime before it happens, and then at the end, Ulysses gets taken off to become a cosmic deity and is never seen or heard from again.
#this is not an invitation to bash on the Inhumans btw#I love the Inhumans#this is just poking fun at overhyped Marvel events#and Ulysses being the most obvious plot device character since Hope Summers#at least Hope has kept showing up long enough to develop a personality#if Destiny was still alive at the time she'd be sitting back like see this is why I just say vague mysterious things and lie a lot
