MURDER OF EDWARD IV'S SONS /1835/ by THEODOR HILDEBRANDT

This painting shows the presumed murder of Edward V and his brother Richard in the Tower of London, around 1483. The whole case remains mysterious, but Richard III was usually put at the center of their disappearance as a way of securing his claim to the throne

The composition depicts the two young princes, peacefully asleep in their bed, totally oblivious to the danger. The figures of the murderers stand over the bed, hesitating, as human nature stands in internal revolt against the horror of what they intend to do. This tension is one of the major focuses of this work, as the artist drew his viewer to a great swirl of emotions.

The artist focuses on emotional intensity and dramatic scenes. He evokes feelings in the viewer and manages to capture the moment before tragedy strikes, emphasizing the innocence of the sleeping boys. Their murder remains one of the many mysteries of the English Wars of the Roses period.

Hildebrandt's depiction is influenced by Shakespeare's Richard III, which dramatizes the events surrounding the murder of the princes.The positioning of the viewer in relation to the scene creates a sense of involvement, as if one is witnessing the tragic moment unfold.
