Truly the best part of Beat The Buzzer was Rekha and Erika ending up in fairly normal locations, and then it cuts to Becca:

I try to generally be constructive and engaged with the show I love on here, so on this day, I’ll just say that one of the most thematically important aspects for me from the original ATLA is Aang’s emotional core of real shame for running away when he was hurt by the monk’s decision to send him away. People who feel the kind of deep-seated shame that Aang feels from this decision can understand how that kind of all-encompassing shame is not built around a simple failure or a lie they tell themselves; it’s constructed from real misbehaviors and transgressions of their own sense of ethics—lashing out, telling lies, attempting to hurt others intentionally—that then have consequences (abuses, abandonments, or deaths) which seem to far exceed their expectations or even basic logic.
The combination of the misbehavior with exaggerated existential punishments (along with a lack of support and amend-making in the immediate wake of the events) is what transforms a sense of guilt (I fucked up) into shame (I am a forever fuck-up). Then shame, that sense of being a secret monster ‘no matter what I do or how good everyone thinks I am,’ invites all the avoidance strategies (Aang puts on big smiles, makes lots of jokes, constantly tries to make everyone happy, hops from town to town without building deeper connections). One doesn’t want to acknowledge one’s true feelings or let others in to see those feelings and experiences because it’s too painful to face the grief at the same time that you have to look at yourself for being responsible—even when you recognize it wasn’t totally your fault. It’s just that if you had just been good, less emotional, less human, then maybe the world wouldn’t be so messed up. Of course, in a zen view of things, the world will always be messed up in the same way it will always be beautiful. These are constant facts that always coexist in balance, and this is the truth that Aang learns and that undergirds the whole series.
So I always loved that Aang ran away. It was his sin and his salvation. And it becomes this constant tension for the series—he gets hurt in Bato of the Water Tribe and starts to run away from Katara and Sokka, he runs away to the Guru in the Crossroads of Destiny and his best friend is attacked, he and the gaang retreat after the Day of the Black Sun failure, he runs away to meditation in Sozin’s Comet when everyone wants him preparing for war. Aang’s reluctance to be a hero and the attachments and petulance for which he gets criticized are what metamorphasize to become his most noble attributes. They allow him to empathize with others shame and, ultimately, wield the kind of compassion that can deconstruct the power and perfectionism of imperialism.
So yes, Aang ran away from his temple 100 years ago. It wasn’t the mentally healthy choice. It wasn’t the ethical choice. It wasn’t the wise choice. It was human and emotional and shameful and real. Aang is a better character for it. ATLA is a better show because of it. And we are better people when we understand these kind of tragic emotional experiences that people are trying so hard to grow through.

just finished detroit become human. love love LOVE the characters but lmao what was that story. the alice twist? north despite having a really interesting backstory being sidelined to markus' love interest no matter which route? don't even get me started on the pacifist route. like it's pretty obvious the game takes heavy inspiration from the civil rights movement but the overall messaging is so watered down. it has the aesthetics of oppression and freedom movements but has an incredibly shallow understanding of how it works.

We’re all familiar with the Xander-Ace arm wrestling scene. A lot of people cite it as one of their favorite funny moments from the series. And yeah, it is pretty funny when you don’t think about it too much.
The joke is pretty much, “Haha, Ace is such a wimp! He’s totally freaking out about a minor injury like it’s a really big deal!”
I don’t know if it was just me, but I sort of had this internal notion that Ace must’ve mentioned that his hand really hurt or something, and the joke was that he was wimp because it was such a minor injury, and it probably didn’t hurt at all.
Tumblr media
But, uh. He never says anything about his hand hurting. Here are the lines he says (not all of which are featured in a text box, since Teruko and Xander are talking over him):
“AAAAAHHHHHH MY HAANNNDDDD!!!!”
*falls on the ground, gets up, screams again*
“OH GOD! You’re gonna put me down like a horse with a broken leg!!!”
“I’d rather die than not be able to eat cereal with my hand!!!”
“I’M NEVER GONNA BE ABLE TO RACE AGAIN!!!!”
Listening to all of the voice lines again, it seems less like Ace is panicking because his hand is hurting, and more like he's panicking because of what may happen to him if his hand is indeed badly injured. So it's less so about the injury itself, and more about what may happen because of it.
He first, of course, panics over Xander being a threat. That's completely expected, since making Xander angry just broke a table and assumedly hurt him in some way or another.
The cereal line is a bit confusing, especially considering his secret. A while back I came up with an out-there theory that he said that in order to try and deflect any suspicion about his secret, since an eating disorder can weaken your bones and if he got hurt too easily, people might begin to suspect something. So he rather clumsily brought up the subject of how he did in fact eat food. If we consider the fact that he's lying here, then him saying he'd rather die than do something makes a lot more sense, since we know he doesn't mean that at all. But in hindsight I may have been overthinking it...Still, I can't think of a better explanation, other than dismissing it altogether as a throwaway joke that didn't have much thought put into it.
The last line is what really makes this interesting. Ace hates his talent and anything to do with it. And yet one of the things he's panicking about the most is how he may not be able to race after sustaining an injury. And I think that this moment probably gives us our earliest insight into just how far Ace will go in order to race. In his first FTE with Teruko, he claims he doesn't do much work at all for his talent, until his performance anxiety forces him to. By saying that, it makes it sound like his talent doesn't completely dominate his life.
But this scene, in the same exact episode of his FTE, quickly proves to the viewer just how desperate Ace is to continue his talent, to the point where his own well-being becomes less important than it. Ace's extreme reaction to being injured isn't because he's a wimp that can't deal with pain, it's because he's spiraling about what this could mean for his career and, therefore, his status as a failure. "What if this injury prevents me from racing?" is the question that comes first, causing him to panic instead of being able to focus on how bad the injury actually is.
...I guess the thing that made me want to write about this scene is just how...Smart it is. It does so much at once. On a first viewing, it's really funny, and it still is on other viewings. Yet in hindsight, it's easier to notice just how distressed Ace is, and that no one is taking that seriously. No one ever takes his fears seriously, and in the end his fears drove him to murder, proving how important they really were. Even if his worries seem silly from an outsider's perspective, they're very real to him. And that's something that no one in-universe could realize until it was too late. This scene does an amazing job summarizing just how the cast's attitude towards Ace helped push him to becoming a culprit.
...Or maybe I'm taking the silly arm-wrestling scene too seriously, haha.

stranger things season one 2016 was so fucking incredible. it exists as an entirely different entity to me than the rest of the show. you literally just had to be there. to this day nothing has ever come close to the amount of universal love for a fictional story that stranger things first received. ive been chasing this high for eight years.

My Thoughts on TUTS Newsies (Part Two!)
If you haven’t read part one, I recommend you do that, but if not, here is all the stuff I forgot to include in the first one!
Here is the first one: https://www.tumblr.com/rhysdoesstuff/751603955388268544/my-thoughts-on-tuts-newsies?source=share
ANYWAYS!
When Jack writes strike on the Headline board, he doesn’t actually write Strike, he takes a towel and erases spots so that it says Strike in the blank places.
Unlike the Broadway version, Teddy Roosevelt was played completely serious, which I loved!!! (The best way to summarize what I’m trying to say is that in Livesies each line was delivered like it was a punchline to a joke, which was great for that production, whereas in TUTS he was more serious which I loved to see.
In Medea’s theater a pair of curtains was flown in from the ceiling to make it look like a theater on the stage, which the Bowery Beauties performed in front of. The drawing of Kathrine was also projected onto that!
Also! As the Bowery Beauties left the stage through that same curtain, Jack followed them and did a silly little kick as he followed them through the curtain.
The photographer who took the photo for the news was there at the resolution of the strike and was taking pictures of all the Newsies! (Including a photo of Medda and Roosevelt!
There were several moments which utilized the stage freezing with one character singing, and being the only one moving. It was very well executed, and was done in I Never Planned On You, and also in Once And For All!
Also, I am in love with the costume department! The costumes particularly for Kathrine and Medda were amazing, and they all had multiple costumes! (RIP to Jack’s red shirt that was onstage for all of two minutes before he went back to his blue one)
(That’s all I can think of right now, but odds are I’ll be back later with a part three)

HAPPY NEW YEARS EVERYONE!!!!!
I hope everyone is having a fantastic new years (night or party)! Even tho it’s sad dbda got cancelled I’m glad 2024 gave us that tv show, it literally changed my life and I can’t imagine for it not existing :( I know it’s dumb to believe in miracles but I still HOPE that maybe next year some magic happens and we can get a dead boy detectives spin off, second season or at least something else.
I miss it so much :(
But anyway, I’m so happy I got to meet some amazing mutuals (you know who yall are!) and I hope next year I can continue meeting new people and hopefully be more active here and maybe work on dbda fanfics 👀 or other stuff dbda related. Here’s to 2025!!!!!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ (also if you aren’t having a fantastic new years, my DMS are open! If anyone wants to chat, or rant or just hang out!) maybe we can play games, talk about dbda or theorize how season 2 would’ve looked like idk! 😊 you’re not alone!
