OJT EATS | The Palomar
It’s been many years since we have been to either The Palomar or its sister restaurant The Barbary (read about our previous visits here and here) but have always had very fond memories of a couple of great meals. The other day, we walked past The Palomar and seeing there was no queue (which is pretty unusual), we decided to pop in for a bite.
You can’t come to here and not get some of their super fluffy pitta breads. They are only small but they are just so pillowy and soft; absolutely delicious!
To go with the pittas, we ordered what was on the menu as David’s Hummus. We don’t know who David is but he clearly knows his way around a chickpea. The hummus was amazing and just look how gooey that yolk is in that pickled egg! I could easily have gone through many portions of pitta bread just with this.
The other dish we got to go with the pitta was the ashkenazi ikura which was essentially sour cream and salmon roe, with a little bit of oil and some chives. This was another perfect complement to the pitta and tempting as it was to just fill up on sour cream, hummus and pittas, there was more of the meal to come!
First up of the rest of the meal were these lamb skewers with carob molasses. These were lovely little meaty kebabs with the molasses going really well with the lamb.
We also ordered a plate of enoki mushrooms with chuma paste (which I think is a red pepper paste). It did have a bit of a kick to it but tasted great!
This was the Jerusalem mix. A mix of chicken liver, chicken thigh and chicken hearts, this was a great hearty mix of chicken bits that was perfect for a rainy winter’s day. If you happen to have any pitta left over, that sauce is just asking to be mopped up with it.
It can be hard to get in without a booking but it’s definitely worth a wait. The food is amazing and with the open kitchen, always has a great buzz to it. We definitely don’t plan to wait years for our next trip here!

Great discovery of modern Israeli cuisine via small plates to share at the @palomarsoho Lots of firsts from the Kubaneh, a brioche like bread bakes in a metal tin and served with tahini and crushed tomatoes, to the Tel Aviv mix of prawn, squid, octopus and crab in a Maghreb-spiced tomato sauce. The extra fluffy pillow soft mini pitas were also different from the usual Pita we know. They were perfect for dipping and mopping up the sauces. Classics like falafel, baba ghanoush and beet goat cheese salad were also perfectly executed. The roasted scallops and crunchy new potatoes on corn purée as well as the Josper-roasted poussin with forbidden rice were delicious. We were too full for dessert and just asked for coffee but they were kind enough to give us a teaspoon each of their Jerusalem Mess - labneh mousse, citrus curd, almond crumbs and a tiny shard of meringue, a nice touch from the friendly servers to end our fantastic lunch. #TravelswithaGourmet #TWAGLondon #yum #ThePalomar (at The Palomar) https://www.instagram.com/p/Br5emZGFA3e/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1ux7gucpt01wq

Labneh ice cream at @thepalomar. I went in opening week and I thought the food was good in parts but poor in others. On this second visit I was really impressed with the food. It seems they've taken off the subpar dishes (including the mezze), kept the good ones on and added a few other good ones to the menu. I'd definitely recommend it for modern Middle Eastern food #FoodInLondon #thepalomar (at The Palomar)

The Palomar
The Palomar’s been on my list of places to go for a while now, especially after our trip to its sister restaurant The Barbary (read our review here) and we recently finally made it down there.
We started the meal with some pitta bread. These were really good, soft and pillowy.
To go with the bread, we ordered a scallop roe taramasalata. It was really creamy and had that intense scallop roe flavour that you I love. We went through the pitta bread super quickly so ordered more pretty sharpish.
We also ordered the baba ghanoush that came with a sprinkling of pomegranate seeds on it. It was deliciously smokey and I really liked the crunch of the pomegranate.
These were artichoke hearts grilled and served with crushed pistachios and a houmous like sauce with it. The artichoke was tender and went really well with the sauce and the crunch of the nuts.
They had a couple of specials on that night and this was one of them. It was fried sea bream collar on a bed of tomato pulp. The sea bream was nice and crisp and the tomato was nice and fresh.
This was another one of the specials. it was a couple of slices of kohlrabi that had been cooked overnight so was meltingly soft. This was amazing; I don’t eat much kohlrabi but I loved this. The topping of nuts was really moreish as well.
A salad of beetroot, goats cheese pomegranate and hazelnuts. This was really tasty. You had some really punchy flavours in there but it all worked together really well.
The last of the specials we ordered. This was a seafood pappardelle with octopus, mussels and squid. The pasta was cooked perfectly al dente and the seafood was all super fresh and well cooked. A great dish!
This was josperized chicken with forbidden rice. I don’t know exactly what makes it forbidden but it is awesome! It was black rice and had raisins, I think shallots and pomegranate seeds. Black rice has that slightly harder texture than normal rice which worked really well. The chicken was as tender as it gets and this was easily one of our favourite dishes.
Another contender for best dish of the night was the polenta. It came with mushrooms, asparagus, parmesan and lashings of truffle oil. You could smell this coming; the waft of truffle travelling across the open kitchen until it arrives in front of you. The polenta was just so creamy and the mushrooms, asparagus and cheese just brought it all together.
The last dish of the night was scallops with potatoes and bacon. The scallops were beautiful and plump, the potatoes were crispy and fully and the bacon was crisp and bacon-ny. A great way to round off the savoury stuff; now onto the desserts!
This is called the Zorba Sorba and is an ouzo and grapefruit sorbet with a pine nut brittle. It was super refreshing and the ouzo flavour wasn’t too strong which I liked (I’m not the biggest lover of ouzo). The pine nut brittle was really good though!
This was called the Choclava and had chocolate truffles and chocolate mouse with caramelised pecans, citrus cream and i think coconut shavings. It was incredibly rich, finishing a whole one alone would be a bit of a challenge, even for me. Great for chocolate lovers!
The last dessert we had was another special; a sharing platter with about 12 different things on it. It was a bit hard to share but each of them were all really well made and yummy!
Our view across the open kitchen from our spot at the bar.
This was a great meal; I definitely recommend it. It’s pretty hard to book and even harder to walk in unless you get there nice and early. We got lucky and managed to get in without a wait this time but by the time we were halfway through our meal, it was getting really busy. It’s definitely worth the effort to get in though.
