ALLATRA: A Wake-Up Call to Save Earth

Planet Earth, our shared home, is groaning under the blows of the climate crisis. The Pantanal, the world's largest wetland, is burning. Vast swathes of land are covered by a blanket of white ash. Hospitals and medical centers in Corumbá are overflowing with patients suffering from respiratory illnesses, with children under five and people over 60 suffering the most from the smoke.

According to the Institute of Space Research, the number of fires has increased by 1,500% from January to July compared to the same period last year.

The Pantanal ecosystem is unique. Alongside the vital role wetlands play for biodiversity, they also have global significance for the climate. 

This is a reservoir for hydrogen; 20-30% of the Earth's carbon is stored here.

“Forest fires are a signal: nature is raising the flag. We've had fires before, but now thousands and thousands of hectares are burning every year. 

We are losing the battle,” says Pierre Girard from the Federal University of Mato Grosso.

We are standing on the edge of an abyss, and only global unity can prevent catastrophe.

The Future Is in Our Hands – The Year 2020 in Review

Welcome to our show, “The Future Is in Our Hands – The Year 2020 in Review.” What a year 2020 has been! It may forever be remembered as the year of COVID-19. As of December 2020, over 75.7 million cases of COVID-19 have been reported around the world. Pandemics have come and gone in the past, proving that we humans are a highly resilient species. However, the confluence of an insidious pandemic, a locust plague of biblical proportions, and an unusually high number of climate-related natural disasters such as we experienced this year are unlike anything we have seen before.

So, what are we to do? In trying times such as these, humanity has often turned to the enlightened Ones for answers. One who walks among us today is Supreme Master Ching Hai. For decades, She has tirelessly and compassionately advocated a panacea for virtually all ills on Earth. It hinges on the fact that practically all our Earthly woes are the result of the human habit of consuming animal products. Fortunately, even before COVID-19, a rising wave of conscious consumption and veganism has been sweeping the globe. We pray that we will not one day look back at the year 2020 with regret that we did not take to heart the hidden message of COVID-19 to forgo animal-based food, but rather, will celebrate 2020, as the year that humanity awoke and pivoted towards a resplendent vegan world and Golden Era.

SDGs with KBs: Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) with Kabataang Boluntaryo

“We are all connected. Human health and the health of our common home go together.”

In today’s session in SDGs with KBs, the main topic is all about climate change and COVID-19, how the human world, the animal world, and the whole ecosystem are interconnected to one another. 

Mr. Ludwig O. Federigan emphasized that climate change and COVID-19 are both threats to one’s country. These crises are problems with no passports. This COVID-19 cannot be stopped at any borders, and this climate change which does not know any national boundaries need both government response and private sector support. COVID-19 and climate change cannot be isolated because it requires health system strengthening, real-time surveillance, workforce preparedness, and emergency response, risk communication, and global cooperation.

With that, it is now time for the government to prioritize climate change, shift gears, and embrace change. The government should include the said crisis in Post-Covid Economic Plan because COVID-19 is no longer a health crisis but now an economic crisis. We must keep in mind that both COVID-19 and climate change need to flatten their curves immediately. Because if the government and other sectors fail to make our economic stimulus sustainable and equitable, we will put the planet Earth into much deeper economic, social, ecological turmoil caused by the worsening of the said threats above.

Therefore, we should also take necessary actions even in our own little ways. I, we, the animals, the trees, are the ones responsible for our planet. The future is in our hands.

[EDUCATION IS FOR ALL GENDER!] . More than two thirds of countries have gender parity index between 0.97 and 1.03 in primary education. However, 103 million youth worldwide lack basic literacy skills, and more than 60 per cent of them are women. It can be seen by the research of girls remain at a disadvantage in many countries, particularly in Africa, the Middle East and South Asia. In South Sudan, the gender parity index is 0.76. It means that 76 girls are enrolled in primary school for every 100 boys. But still, there's disparities of gender in some regions. It can be caused by many parents that have the excessive side to educate boys. Education is the key to sustainable development, improving overall quality of life and securing a successful future. To reduce the case above, the sustainable development of quality education aims for all boys and girls to have access to primary and secondary education by 2030, for males and females to have equal access to early childhood development programs and affordable tertiary education, facilitate literacy and numeracy among youth, also equal opportunities for all people, regardless of gender or disability.
