Belli bir tarihsel dönemde geçen filmleri çekerken başarıya ulaşmanın bazı pratik yolları var mı bilmiyorum sinema öğretisinde. Gelgelelim bu filmde bir taşra peyzajı söz konusu olduğundan kolay yolu seçmemiş de olabilir yönetmen ve yapımcılar diye düşünüyorum.

Bir edebi dramanın kolaylığında süzülecek bir olay dizimi de yok pek. Öykü olarak anlatılan süreçte dramatik öğeler insanı çok da etkilemiyor.Lakin başka bir şey var filmde. Britanya peyzajının resimsel derinliğinde, aslında bu derinliğe gereksinim duymayan tematik bir kurgu var Ölüm üzerine... Bir arkeolojik buluntuyu ortaya çıkarmak ve korumak için gösterilen çabanın epik bir yanı var tabii; ama asıl olarak bu buluntu, yani 1000 yılı aşkın bir zamandır toprak altında olan bir gemi, mezar odası ve ölü bir kralın fiziksel alametlerini ortaya çıkarmaya çalışmak için bir araya gelen insanları, kırsal peyzajın tüm şiirselliğine rağmen saran Ölüm’ün kurtulması imkansız gölgesi var filmde. Kişilerin özel yaşamları hakkında derin bir bilgi vermiyor yapıt; geçmişleri üzerine ve hayatın zaman ve uzamda benliklerini nasıl yapılandırdığı üzerine edebi bir anlatım yok filmde. Bu yaşamların nasıl süreceğini, gelecek günlerin onlara ne getireceğini seyirci bilemez. Bu yüzden de filmin sınırlı bir alanda sahneye konan içeriği hüzünlü bir şekilde aslında kendi içine katlanır. Film hakkında popüler yayınlarda, anlatılan tarihsel kahramanların filmin sonu ile işaret edilen zamandan sonraki yaşamlarından özellikle bahsedilmesi rastlantısal değil sanırım. İnsan bu isimlerin, kendi içine kapanmış anlatının dışına çıkıp çıkamadıklarını bilmek istiyor.

In the old days of archaeology, excavators thought nothing of digging as deep as they could, and if the occasional trench would collapse on some of the workers then that was an unfortunate accident. Nowadays, there are many different safety procedures in place to make sure that such things don't happen, like not digging deeper than the trench is wide. . Is it a naïve story of Basil Brown (Ralph Fiennes) a weathered humbled down to earth uneducated man or that of a widowed estate owner Edith Pretty (Carey Mulligan) is to be questioned. Basil's instincts are more precise than a formally educated archeologist. Basil Brown’s instincts are more precise. He knows something lies underneath the earthly mounds in the vast estate of Edith Pretty (Carey Mulligan) in Suffolk. Being loyal to his master, he shows exemplary subservience in handing over the remains & artifacts of a wrecked ship, which he claims to be of Anglo-Saxon period. These belong to the rightful owner instead of being handed over to the British Museum. The dynamic interactions between Edith Pretty & Basil Brown are the best part of the narrative in the story. Carry Mulligan flawlessly plays her character in ‘The Dig’ as the determined pursuing archaeology, her childhood dream. The role is a perfect U turn from an average American in ‘Promising Young Woman’. The cinematography is in the simple landscape and supplements the narrative in its simplicity. Simone Stone’s direction is meticulous and successfully highlights the excavation at Sutton Hoo, 20th century’s biggest archeological find.
