1) this episode actually makes me ship Leelee and Vida, with a hilarious extra layer for Necrolai and Vida. It very much felt like Necrolai went “honey pick whichever ranger you want and we’ll turn them into a vampire so you can date them forever” so she tries to pick Nick, then Xander then Vida comes with because it’s a dj. And then Necrolai decides to steal her daughter’s new girlfriend for herself. Reverse Stacy’s mom situation. The mental image I keep getting makes me bust out laughing every time. No wonder LeeLee’s Like That. Her mom keeps stealing her partners! Pft. Anyway

2. Given it’s hinted DJ Fly is a vampire himself, it does maybe hint what i noticed with the vampires of power rangers was at least a little on purpose. Males when monster form have insect and bat motifs, with fly, moth, butterfly and mosquito motifs in their designs mixed with the bat shaped wings somewhere on their bodies. And the female vampires are very elegant vampires with some small nods to moths, speficially usually hawk moths.

3. It leads to the very good question who bit/put a spell on Vida initially. Necrolai or DJ Fly. Even if Fly did, it was probably under orders of Necrolai and doesn’t really matter in grand scheme of plot but it does make me wonder.

K is growingly more paranoid due to the number of ranger teams she has evidence have robots in their ranks especially the beast morphers since that’s the team their closest too

Preston was “bullied” out of the magic the gathering club by the mystic rangers due to Vida trying to accuse him of being an evil wizard without blowing their cover. Vida’s exact words were “we don’t don’t want your kind around here”. The ninja steel team now thinks the magic the gathering club is homophobic towards Preston and hates them. Ironically the mystic rangers all love the blue ninja steel ranger and the ninja steel rangers really life the mystic force.

Summer after spending the entire night fighting vengix and exhausted as she walks in the door and Mack the day after he found out he’s a robot. “Summer would you still be my friend if I was a robot?” “Absolutely not” cue Mack having a break down in the janitor closet only to be found by Ben and Betty who assure him they would still be his friends even if he was a robot

Mick is the impromptu medic to most of the robotic rangers

Tyzon is not sure what normal human anatomy should look like so he just copies a lot of what he’s seen Dana do but also does know someone from aquatar when he sees one and treats their injuries accordingly and the aquatar rangers just think he’s a human whose really good with secrets

The teachers are youngish (most haven’t hit 30 yet) and I use TA as a short hand for teachers in training so they’re earlier 20s. And then most of the students besides Justin and Nate are between 14-18 with Justin and Nate both being 12.

Generally everyone else is around the age they are in the show

The Glass House (2001)

At best, The Glass House will entertain teenagers who haven’t seen what this film has to offer before. For any adults - or viewers who have seen their fair share of thrillers -, the story is obvious, lacks restraint and only comes to life during the final act, which does have a couple of nice little touches.

After their parents die in a car crash, Sixteen-year-old Ruby Baker (Leelee Sobieski) and her eleven-year-old brother Rhett (Trevor Morgan) are sent to live with Dr. Erin Glass and her husband, Terry (Diane Lane and Stellan Skarsgård). When Ruby learns she and her brother have inherited 4 million dollars, she wonders if the Glasses have their best interests at heart.

The problem with this film is that everything is so obvious. Ruby and Rhett are given one room to share when they arrive at the titular ‘Glass House’ - which has many huge windows and no soundproofing, making it easy for people to hear most of the conversations within its walls. That’s a little peculiar considering the place is basically a castle but maybe the childless couple is just getting things set up. Then, Terry makes some not-too-subtle advances towards the teenage girl. That's an odd choice from director Daniel Sackheim because, ultimately, Terry isn’t interested in Ruby (thank goodness). As a surprise to no one, he and his wife are after the money. So why make Terry into a creep EXCEPT to make it as obvious as possible that this new setup is bad? How dumb does writer Wesley Strick think we are?

From there, just about everything in The Glass House is revealed to be clichéd and predictable. It doesn’t take much deduction to realize Erin is a drug addict and Terry is desperate for cash so he can pay off the loan sharks on his tail. The film does manage to hold your interest in a few clever ways, however. With the protagonist being a sixteen-year-old, it’s easy for the film to put her in a realistic-feeling trap. Ruby doesn’t have her own money. She doesn’t even have a driver’s license and while still recovering from the loss of her parents, you can believe the authorities are a little incredulous when she starts making accusations. You’d believe it more if the evidence she brought was a little less black-and-white, but some scenes successfully exploit teenage fears and anxieties enough to keep younger viewers engaged.

I might’ve been convinced to give the film a mild recommendation if it had aced the ending. It looks like it’s going to. We’ve seen Ruby studying ‘Hamlet’ and the idea of a revenge drama keeps popping up. The teenager is put in a situation where the tables are turning and suddenly, she’s able to put the squeeze on Terry and Erin… but then we get a typical ending, the kind that feels born from a different movie - the same kind of movie The Glass House makes fun of at the very beginning when Ruby is watching a generic slasher film in the theater.

All I can say in the picture’s defense is that I saw all of the flaws as it was playing and yet, I found myself engaged. There’s no way I’ll remember The Glass House down the line except as an example of what sort of story it is but I was never bored. I might even say I liked it more than I didn’t. Worth your time? I dunno. Maybe if you’re sixteen and it’s playing for free on TV. (July 28, 2022)

NYC-4: What's Love Got To Do With It

Leelee Jackson wrote this piece for the millions of women who have had to constantly contend with the frailty of men who take up so much space in one’s life without giving one little scrap of it back. Jackson had all the women, most of the men, and all the rest of us eating out of the palm of her hand. We would encourage her to think of the forward momentum that she builds with the action of the play. It’s telling that our lead shows compassion to the man to tend to a wound that she gave him. Yet that moment pays off more when she leaves anyway. Anything keeping her from walking towards the door is delaying one of the best payoffs we’ve seen in a short play.

NYC-5: Mamas and Papas

We are big fans of stories of people having to create a family out of the ashes of disaster. Kamilah Bush is telling a gripping story about Charles who has to learn to be a father to Dottie a child he created when he was just a baby himself. She’s also telling the story of a Dottie who desperately needs stability after losing her mother who was her anchor. We felt that tension hanging over everything yet we were torn from the journey with moments that lagged (such as the father waiting for Billie Holiday to come over). We would encourage Bush to focus on distilling this amazing story into as few plot points as possible or expand them all into a full-length play. We connected enough with the characters and the premise that we will go in whichever direction that Bush decides to take us with the script.

NYC-6: It's Karen B****

This play is a wonderful illustration of how punchlines work. Many plays set up premises where the punchline seems like a subway car. You know that it’s coming eventually so you’re just sitting and waiting until it gets here so you can get to where you’re going. The best premises will take you on an unexpected and pleasant detour. Taylor A. Blackman’s detour was one that Dana the ex-honor student from a private PWI resonated with Niani immediately. What black “gifted” child hasn’t longed to “just” exist, to be mediocre, and NOT be placed on a pillar just to be knocked off the next time a Karen decides we are beneath her? We would beg Blackman to focus on pacing and refining the journey that the audience takes through the play when (or if) he decides to do a rewrite.

NYC-7: Ethel and Ethel

Joël René Scoville has an unfair advantage in that Ricky LOVES Ethel Mae Waters. We appreciated that Scoville gave us a script that lived in tenderness and caring. One of the things that was hard to understand was why they were holding themselves back. We are well aware of the realities of the time period but the play didn’t really talk about those nor did they seem as looming of a threat as they could have been. Case in point the calls from the gentleman caller did not feel like the looming threat to the relationship that Scoville intended them to be. The piece needed that ticking time bomb to make the gravity of their secret meetings hit home. That makes the payoff of the key to an apartment feel way more sweet and fulfilling. This piece is so good that we would love to see how far it could go with some more development.

NYC-8: Why Jamira Gotta Do All Da Werk?

Every time we feel the NYC cold chilling our bones Dana likes to recall one of their many escapades wearing next to nothing to avoid paying a coat check fee and playing mother hen to a gaggle of gal pals headed to one Hell’s Kitchen club or another. This play immediately rang a bell with them. Nia Akilah Robinson created two characters we understood immediately and acted like our handholds in the story. Jamira and Kiana were very real and endearing. Taking something as simple as hanging out in the club and adding emotional resonance to it is no easy feat. We’d love to see what Scoville does next.

NYC-9: The Mural

The greatest compliment that we can give Pappas-Williams is that there seems to be too much story going on to be contained in such a small package. Monique Pappas-Williams presents a piece with so many wonderful moments and images between Nia and Riz but we can tell she had way more story that she wanted to tell than what we saw. This will be the first time in RnD history that we will say (we think) we would love to see “Act Zero” as a longer version of this play. This is an interesting and dynamic story. We would love to see where it goes from here.

Nailah Carrie:

On top of New Work The Fire This Time Festival also featured the music of Nailah Carrie. Carrie started her music career doing an open mic at Frigid NYC. Opening for Fire This Time she regaled us with two pieces, one of them her original work called “Bad Girl”. This song immediately brought tears to Ricky’s eyes. We could feel the soul of her music as she set the mood. We hope to see her be even bolder and more powerful the next time we see her.

The Ensemble:

In our minds we see this cast as an ensemble. Even though each piece had different characters and extremely different parts that needed to be played this small handful of actors stepped up where they needed to be. Each one so seamlessly fit into each role that it was like a new person onstage every time.

Cezar Williams:

As the director, we can tell that Wlliams enjoys both character-driven drama and big visual statements. He’s not afraid of letting characters stand and talk while withstanding the tension that wants to pull them together or the sense of repulsion pushing them away. Then there are big character moments being highlighted with costumes, props, or huuuge rainbow banners on the walls. Williams brings practical guidance that perfectly matches artists debuting their new works for the first time. It’s one of those things that make Fire This Time Festival a perfect match for emerging writers.

In Closing:

We have attended several festivals before in-person and online and one of the things we like to talk about amongst each other is the festival's atmosphere. The minute we walked in the door of The Fire This Time Festival we noticed that the “fire” also could describe the warmth of the artists involved. Literary Manager AJ Mohammad is walking around, shaking hands, and scoops us up in a bear hug when he sees us. Director Cezar Williams is constantly greeting audience members as they enter to sit down. We can immediately tell that this is a place where long-time donors, fellow artists, and new audiences can gather and watch new works, sing out to the music, and cheer for our favorite characters. The Fire This Time Festival has been keeping these home fires burning for 15 years and with an atmosphere like this we hope that they’ll keep a blaze burning in winter for the next 50 years.

Hi, i’m Leelee or Kathleen. I don’t really know what to write here. Still trying to get a hang of Tumblr. I think i’ll just write about my days and music and things i’m obsessing over here. But i don’t know everything. I don’t even know what to make my profile picture or header or user or what to name this blog. i’ll start by saying that i love Taylor Swift. I have ever since the dawn of time or something. So that’s something i’m obsessed over (not saying taylor is a thing i’m bad at words). I want to document everything. I have little boxes like time capsules but i don’t bury them, just hide them in my closet. I make like 3 a year. I’ll share some things that have been going on recently. I’ll start music wise: Yesterday i went to The Beth’s concert at cats cradle. It was incredible. Very loud. I didn’t know all the words but i think someday i want to be in a band. or be a singer. I don’t really have it figured out. The opener for them was a band called Disq and i thought they were great too. Today Unreal Unearth came out. I loved the singles but i have yet to listen to the album. Also, a great record by Gregory Alan Isakov came out today. It’s called Appaloosa Bones. I think it’s just wonderful. Tomorrow, I’ll tell you how I like Unreal Unearth. Until then, If a single soul sees this, go listen to it. Or whatever music you like. I think that’s what is good.
