Your (hopefully) friendly neighborhood ferret guy of 15+ years here to break down the practical side of Marshall ferret health: 

  Ferrets should live at least 8-10 years when properly cared for. Responsible breeders I follow on Facebook are having ferrets live at least to that, if not up to 13. Marshall Ferrets gives us a lifespan estimate of 5-8, and that is pretty darn accurate for them. Why?

Three main reasons that I am aware of: poor breeding, diet, and early neuter.

Breeding - These ferrets are bred exclusively for sales factors, namely a sanguine temperament and pretty colors. This means that health is not a longterm consideration, and even the ferrets they produce that come with a “health guarantee” were traditionally only refunded if the ferret was kept on Marshall’s diet and returned to the company to euthanize and autopsy (I have not bought a ferret from them in 16 years, though, so I am unsure if this is still policy. It was for several decades at least). This is not an effective model. By the time an owner knows there is a problem with their ferret, they’ve switched to a healthier food. They are attached and don’t want it killed. They want to give it vet care and a high quality of life. It was common in the 90′s and 00′s for ferret people to pick up the deaf or sick kits and ones with bad temperaments from the pet store to save them from getting sent back and euthanized. This also meant that Marshall kept carelessly producing very pretty, very deaf blaze-pattered ferrets (similar to the merle gene in dogs). They sold like hot cakes! As they get older, it seems like Marshall ferrets are also prone to an extraordinary amount of arthritis as well as lumps and bumps and particularly lymphoma, even compared to regular old cancer-prone ferrets. Juvenile cancer, tumors, and growths are explicitly not included in their guarantee.

Diet - Marshall’s ferret diet and treats are notoriously high in carbs and sugars (although this has also gotten better in recent years; molasses used to be reasonably high on the ingredient list). Because their ferrets are weaned way too young, they are on this diet from the time they should be just on milk to when they should be starting meat or high protein kibble to when they come home with you. Basically, even if you switch them over to something healthy immediately, your ferret has likely started off their life on very much the wrong nutritional foot from 3-4 weeks old, a key time in development. This ferrets should be weaned at 8 weeks, and with their mom until then or 10-12 weeks. I’ve seen babies that could not have been older than 5 weeks old at Petco eating watered down Marshall’s kibble. Ferrets are prone to insulinoma if they consume too much sugar, so most Marshall ferrets will get it sooner or later. There is no known cure, only treatment and then palliative care.

Early Neuter - We have lots and lots of studies on the detrimental effects of early neuter on animals, especially dogs. These ferrets are no exception, and they are neutered far younger than puppies ever are (I cannot find my source that said 4 weeks, but we know at least under 6-7 weeks, since they are fully healed when they ship). Early neutering severely stunts their growth, can cause incontinence if there was a mistake in the procedure due to the animal being so very small (especially common in females when the tiny muscles that control urinary control accidentally get nicked), and is directly related to Adrenal Disease, cancer of one or both adrenal glands. This is another one that nearly every Marshall ferret seems to get eventually if the insulinoma or lymphoma don’t strike first. The most effective treatment we currently know is deslorin implants which will stop the symptoms (heat/rut symptoms, enlarged prostate, incontinence, hair loss, weight loss, etc.) and slow the growth, but there is no known cure, only slowing the disease.

My first ferret was a Marshall from a little local exotic pet shop. He was my best friend. He got juvenile adrenal cancer at barely three years old, and passed on just short of his sixth birthday after extensive vet care including surgery and implants to extend and increase his quality of life.

Nearly everyone in North America gets a Marshall ferret from a pet store as their first. Nearly everyone else here gets Marshall ferrets as rescues. It’s not commonly known that good breeders are an option, and there are so many ferrets sold as the small-cute-new-best-friend at the pet store rather than puppies that they land on Craigslist and in rescue at a tremendous rate. If you know the risks when you get a ferret with the two little blue ear tattoos, you’ll be better able to be preemptive in watching for health issues and having a vet fund squirreled away. You’ll need it.

1. Vaccination And Immunization Are The Same

 What the vet says:

“Prevention is better than cure. Vaccination is the way we cause animals to become resistant (immune) to infections. A vaccine consists of a modified or killed virus or bacterium. It is prepared in such a way that the body’s defenses recognise it as a threat and react to it as if it were a real infection. The body will produce antibodies which are proteins which recognise and attach to chemicals on the surface of the organism, killing it. These antibodies are then available to kill any of the real infection organisms the animal might pick up during its life. They are lost gradually and the body needs occasional reminders (booster vaccinations) to keep the antibody level high enough to prevent real infections. Vaccination reactions are very rare. A booster is recommended each year.“

Our issue with this advice:

The body doesn’t react to a vaccine the same way it would to the real disease.

When exposed to a real virus, the body forms immunity by filing that information away in memory cells. The memory cells, called cellular immunity, are responsible for mounting a quick attack the next time they are faced with the same disease and the body, armed with the knowledge the memory cells have stored away, quickly neutralizes the disease by triggering circulating antibodies. This is why humans only get chicken pox once and dogs can only get parvovirus once. After the first episode, they’re protected for life.

Vaccines try to emulate this, but they don’t do a complete job.

Vaccines stimulate circulating antibodies, called humoral immunity, and they bypass the memory cells. This creates an artificial immunity called humoral bias and this essentially turns the immune system inside out.

But the real problem with this statement is their desire for antibody levels to be high. High antibody levels mean high levels of circulating antibodies – or humoral bias.

The higher the titer, the more chronically inflamed the body is.

This humoral bias and resulting chronic inflammation result in many of the autoimmune diseases we commonly see in dogs today: allergies, cancer, arthritis, diabetes, bowel disease and many, many more. Vaccine reactions may be rare, but the risk and severity of chronic disease that vaccines cause increase with each and every vaccine given.

2. Vaccinating Puppies At 6 Weeks Of Age

 What the vet says:

“Your puppy vaccination course should be started at 6 weeks of age. A primary vaccination is first given and a booster 2-4 weeks later. This course must be completed before your puppy is fully protected. Unfortunately, the protection provided by vaccinating is not life-long and hence an annual booster is recommended. At XXXX veterinary clinic we will send you out an annual reminder to ensure your pet is kept up to date and protected.”

Our issue with this advice:

Vaccinating a puppy at 6 weeks? According to veterinary vaccine researcher Dr Jean Dodds, only 30% of puppies will be protected from a vaccine given at 6 weeks of age.

100% of them will be exposed to disease when taken to the vet clinic for that shot.

Moreover, vaccines create immune suppression for 10 to 14 days.

So, choosing to vaccinate a puppy at 6 weeks means exposing him to the most disease-ridden location he could possibly be in – the vet clinic – while creating immune suppression at the same time. Your puppy is much more likely to get the disease he is being vaccinated for, and all in exchange for a 30% chance the vaccine will work.

That’s a pretty high gamble with a puppy’s life.

The reason the vaccine is unlikely to work at that young age is because the puppy is protected against disease with maternal antibodies – immunity passed down from his mother. This protection wanes over time, but is still pretty strong at 6 weeks. That’s why in most cases the vaccine doesn’t work at this age: the maternal antibodies are strong enough to block the vaccine.

Here is problem number two with vaccinating at that age: the maternal antibodies will be less effective after the vaccine is given because vaccines cause immune suppression.

We also object to this statement: “This course must be completed before your puppy is fully protected.” There are two problems with this statement actually.

You can’t be partially protected: immunity is like being a virgin, you either are or you aren’t. Either the immune system has filed that information away or it hasn’t: there is no grey area, you are either immune or you are not.

As for the other problem, a course of vaccines is not necessary: it only takes ONE vaccine to protect a puppy – ONE AND DONE.

3. Lifelong Immunity

 What the vet says:

“Primary pet vaccinations do not cover your animal for the rest of their life, so annual booster vaccinations are required for continued protection.”

Our issue with this advice:

Wow, bad grammar aside, there’s one very big problem with this statement – a monumental problem of biblical proportions!

Not only do core vaccines last for years, some for the life of the animal, vets have known about this for about forty years!

We won’t even go into why annual vaccination is a very, very bad choice – because vaccinating every three years or every five years is also a bad choice based on unsound science.

Why would you vaccinate every year if the minimum immunity starts at 7 years? Why put your dog at risk?

Nuff said.

4. Revaccination Is Backed By Research

 What the vet says:

“At XXXX Veterinary Hospital, we are aware of some of the controversy currently surrounding immunization protocols. However, until industry leaders and experts, such as the vaccine manufacturers and the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), arrive at some definitive conclusions, we believe it to be in the best interest of your pet and the general public to continue to adhere to our established immunization protocols. We recommend that your pet should receive annual boosters.”

Our issue with this advice:

Controversy? Industry leaders and experts?

Here is the crux of the problem: these vets are waiting for the vaccine manufacturers, AAHA and the AVMA to decide how often to vaccinate. Don’t you think that all of these entities have a financial interest in how often you vaccinate your dog?  Are they capable of making an unbiased recommendation?

Apparently, they aren’t.

The report of the American Animal Hospital Association Canine Vaccine Taskforce in JAAHA (39 March/April 2003) includes the following information for vets:

Misunderstanding, misinformation and the conservative nature of our profession have largely slowed adoption of protocols advocating decreased frequency of vaccination; Immunological memory provides durations of immunity for core infectious diseases that far exceed the traditional recommendations for annual vaccination.

This is supported by a growing body of veterinary information  as well-developed epidemiological vigilance in human medicine that indicates immunity induced by vaccination is extremely long lasting and, in most cases, lifelong.

And the American Animal Hospital Association’s own Preventive Healthcare Guidelines state:

Tailor vaccination protocols to your pet. While some vaccines, like rabies, are required by law because of the risk to humans, others may be necessary for your pet’s lifestyle. In some scenarios, a titer to previous vaccines can be measured to help decide if a booster vaccination is necessary. Your veterinarian will know what’s best for your pet.

5. Your Vet Is A Vaccine Expert

What the vet says:

“Annual boosters are painless for your pet, and help to fight off contagious illnesses throughout the year. The staff at XXXX Veterinary Clinic are expertly trained in the welfare of your pet.”

Our issue with this advice:

Any vet who advocates annual vaccinations – or even uses the term booster – is clearly not expertly trained in immunization or the welfare of your pet.

In fact, most vets are woefully inept when it comes to understanding immunity. (We already talked about this above)

They are very good at giving vaccines – yet most vets are not taught very much about immunity at all.

Perhaps that’s because immunity is taught by the vaccine manufacturers. It’s no wonder that vets are well armed with needles yet lack the knowledge or motivation to question just what damage those needles are doing.

And even if they acknowledge the research that proves annual vaccines are unnecessary, most are not willing to lose the profits those yearly visits bring in.

In the end, it doesn’t matter whether vets continue to dispense this bad advice out of ignorance or for financial gain (most veterinary practices earn 14% of their income from vaccines). Either way, the bad advice is out there and dog owners – and dogs – will fall victim to that bad advice every day.

Arthritis in pets starts off small and may go unnoticed if we aren’t observant. For example, simple tasks like sitting, walking, and changing positions can become cumbersome and difficult to do.

If your puppy feels comfortable using their crate as a bathroom, it will make housetraining even more challenging.

Most puppies do not want to lay in their mess, so if their crate is too small to dedicate a corner to be a bathroom, they will often practice greater self-control until they can get out to use the bathroom.

If you are concerned about getting a small crate and then needing to buy another as your puppy grows, check out the crates that have a movable barrier allowing you to adjust the space to the appropriate size for your dog’s needs.

Location of the Crate

I know this seems to be an obvious factor, but speaking from personal experience, it is essential to take the time to measure the space you intend to put the kennel.

I didn’t take the time and just assumed the spot looked large enough.

However, it turned out I was a couple of inches off and was left finding a new, less desirable place for the crate.

Also, when measuring the location for the crate, consider the orientation of the door.

How far will the door need to open?

Some doors you can change to open on the left or right side, but on my wire crate, the door is not adjustable.

Trust me, it takes only a minute to measure and could potentially save you a big headache later.

Travel Needs

The crate that works great in your home may not always be the optimal choice when traveling.

For example, Juni’s crate at home is far too big for traveling on a plane or even in my brother’s car since he drives a smaller car that already has a car seat in the back.

So, if you are traveling by plane, be sure to find out the measurements for space under the seat or for the seat itself if you plan on holding the carrier in your lap.

Most airlines also have maximum crate sizes, too[3].

If you are traveling by car, be sure to measure the doorway and not just the interior where the crate will sit.

Another of my not so awesome moments was when I only measured the cargo area of my SUV and figured out the kennel would fit, but just barely.

However, when it came time to load the carrier, I realized the hatch itself was four inches shorter than the interior! Ugh!

I was still able to get the crate in the car, but I had to unfold and set it up inside the cargo area.

Beds, Blankets, and Toys

Whenever I set up a crate for one of my dogs, I always include a bed and toys.

And in the winter, I put in a blanket too.

All of these items take up valuable real estate in the crate.

At first, you might think it’s just a few things, no biggie, but if you put in an orthopedic dog bed for your senior, you’ve decreased the interior height of the kennel sometimes by three or more inches.

Blankets, depending on the size, can eat up a couple of inches on either side, reducing the width. And toys, though generally don’t take up a ton of room, do take up some space.

Eventually it all adds up and a couple of inches here and there ends up making a pretty big dent in the overall space your dog now has to lay down and relax or sit up and stretch.

I’m not saying to put these items in or that you need the biggest crate ever made, but these are just factors to keep in mind when choosing the right size crate.

Dear Dudence for 14 December 2017 II

It’s brisk but sunny here in lovely Dudenceville.  Needing the jacket when headed to work, but able to go without after leaving for the day.  There is a collection of leaves on the ground that will need to be raked this weekend.  I’ll be sure to reward myself for that labor with some hot cocoa with a healthy dose of Baileys.  In the meantime though it’s off to helping people who don’t want my help!

Before my paternal grandmother died, she would buy me an original American Girl doll every year for Christmas. I had the dolls, the books, and most of the accessories. My fondest memories of my time with my grandmother were playing with those dolls. I took very good care of them, and when I went off to college, I packed them up to be stored at my mother’s house. I have graduated and have my own place, so I went back to my mother’s to get my stored stuff. My mother gave away several of my dolls! A co-worker helped her out and mentioned her young daughter liked the dolls, so my mother just gave them to her! I was heartbroken, and we fought. My mother didn’t think it should matter since I had “so many.” I told her those dolls were worth a lot and she had no right to steal my things. I wanted her to tell me the name of her co-worker so I could get my dolls back. She refused and said that it was out of the question, that I would be embarrassing her.

I am 32 years old and a single mom to a 3-year-old daughter. I’m in graduate school and scheduled to graduate in May. I already have a job lined up after graduation. My daughter and I live rent-free with my parents, although I do pay a minimal amount for utilities and groceries, as well as take care of my other bills. Recently, my mother’s health has dramatically declined (debilitating arthritis, et cetera), and my father is not doing well either. They are only in their mid-50s. Rather than being grateful for what they’ve provided me with, I find myself resenting them. Whereas my mom and I used to be close, now we argue constantly. She thinks I’m ungrateful for the free child care and housing they’ve provided me. I think she uses it as a method of guilt-tripping me, and I wish she could recognize how hard I am trying.

Dear Ungrateful Child, the best way for you to adjust your attitude and improve the situation to where both you and your mother are respectful and appreciative of one another is for you to move out.  If you cannot do that because the sudden addition of a few thousand dollars in rent and child care to your budget is too prohibitive then I’m afraid you’re just going to need to suck up your pride and be ungrateful and resentful in private because you’re the one who is imposing in their dotage, benefiting from their largesse, and being a burden to their lives they didn’t expect.  Maybe offer to pay more than a “minimal” for the additional household expenses you and your child are incurring.  You describe your mother as suffering from crippling arthritis and your father is not doing well either.  Your mother’s attitude towards you might have soured recently because she knows she and your father are not able to provide the day care services you think they should, they are too embarrassed to tell you they’re no longer able to watch your toddler all the time you’re dealing with school, and they suspect it is something you can’t afford so they don’t see a way out.

Dear Second Date Surgery, do you have some underlying medical condition which makes you susceptible to long and painful recoveries from relatively minor surgeries?  Laproscoptic gallbladder surgery involves cutting into your abdominal muscles the same way that trimming your fingernails is cutting off a part of your finger.  The Mayo Clinic describes a week to being fully recovered and the British NHS says two weeks.  As for how to describe it “Hey babe, I have a great time with you, and I’d really like to keep seeing you, but I’m going to be laid up for a couple weeks because I’m getting my gallbladder removed.”  Honestly, if he’s going to ghost you because you get your gallbladder taken out you’re better off because it’s only a matter of time before he stops returning your calls because you needed your tires changed or you had to take your ferret to the vet for a check-up.

I’m married with a child, and I’m not all in. I don’t want to move into a home I own and make it communal property. The marriage is fairly happy. We get along, and I love her, but I have my doubts to whether we’ll make it for the long-term. I have more than $100,000 in equity in the home and consider it part of my retirement plan.
