hey when they wrote "knight behind bars" and they wrote kitt helping a couple get together and they gave him the line "Some day, it will be my turn" [to find love]. did they know what they were doing. did they know that in some 40 years some gay autistic robot-obsessed little freak on tumblr would not stop thinking about it for weeks and write literal dozens of paragraphs screaming about it on discord. did they know they were going to ruin Me, Specifically, with this concept that feels like the culmination of everything kitt has gone through through the show and such a fascinating thing to think about in regards to michael and kitt's relationship,

one of the themes of knight rider is kitt developing as a Person, developing a line between the Knight Industries Two-Thousand, and Kitt. discovering humanity, his own emotions, the joys of the seemingly and logically pointless, and often through the lens of his own driver, his partner, his friend, Michael - his primary guide through all these experiences, his reference for those human things he doesn't understand. and as much as he initially claims to not be capable of experiencing emotions, of understanding feelings, he learns to. he experiences a wide range of emotions through the show even while claiming he doesn't, he even learns fear and insecurity. perhaps it's only natural a robot would learn to love, or at the very least be terribly curious about it and wonder if such a thing could ever exist for Him

the majority of people are not exactly kind to kitt. they talk about him like he's not there, they talk about him like he's a machine, a novelty, some people are even scared of or disturbed by him when all he's trying to do is make polite conversation and company. he's always Othered - there's no other cars like him (at least not anymore), but there's no other person like him either, he doesn't truly belong among humans or vehicles. some of the technicians at FLAG don't even seem to fully respect him as a person, at least they don't based on my vague recollection of how they talk about him in Junkyard Dog. when Michael asks him after KARR is destroyed if it feels good to be one of a kind again, he doesn't say yes or no - he only says it's a "familiar feeling." it may be familiar, but it's surely also isolating, and i think that's something he'd realize as he slowly picks up this curiosity about love. where could he even find it when so few people see him as an equal person to begin with?

and then there's michael. oh my god, and then there's michael. no matter what flavor you choose to read it in, the whole show is about their relationship, they're a duo, a set Not to be separated, they're Partners. they work together, they worry about and look after each other (forever insane about when kitt was a melted shell, Michael stuck around the garage for hours, waiting for any news like a worried spouse, constantly checking on him every opportunity he got... encouraging him to recover, and even helping paint back on his protective coating... kitt always looks after michael, but for once, it's michael's turn to look after Him), in a way they were Made for each other - Kitt more literally, being programmed for Michael and holding his namesake, but Michael was also made in a sense for the pilot program, hand picked and given a second life to work for the foundation and with this strange supercar. and even if they had a rocky start, michael comes to view kitt as a person - car, TV set, or computer core, Kitt is his partner, his buddy. he helps him find himself, guides him and teaches him about these things that make us human, and in a way, kitt becomes human - but his entire experience is still through the perspective of an AI in a car, it's still very unique and isolating, and I think he sort of grows into his own limitations, he's finally brushing against the walls that define him.

he learns of love, and then he learns to dream Of love. these things he sees in the movies, that michael tells him about, that he so often sees michael Partaking in that he gets so oddly jealous of, doesn't it all seem so wonderful? he's very curious. but who could ever love steel and circuitry, who could ever see him as an equal let alone a partner in a romantic sense? who would ever love a car and all the limitations That comes with? it's a problem for a hypothetical hopeful Some Day, in the meantime stuck between two worlds where he doesn't perfectly belong to either, where no car Can love him and no human seemingly Would love him...

and michael loves him anyway. before either of them really realize or talk about it, in spite of everything, in any form, regardless of the fact it wouldn't be a typical relationship by absolutely any means, michael loves him anyway. kitt is as much a person to him as bonnie or devon or RC, and that person is someone he loves and cares for deeply. the feeling is mutual, kitt's world revolves around michael, he's one of the most important people in kitt's life, and he'd do anything to protect him.

and it is michael that will finally teach him to love, and what it means to feel loved in turn, to be loved as the person he undoubtedly is.

i am currently fixated on the idea of up and coming rockstar!eddie becoming obsessed with bartender!steve after one of his gigs at steves job.

eddie drooling over steves arms, as he watches steve use the cocktail mixer thingy. steve would be so so so into bartending too, like the whole doing tricks with the mixer, sliding drinks down the bar, and suuuuuch a flirt to make those extra tips. steve with the towel rag thing thrown over his shoulder i am swooning. steves unifrom would include a white polo that he always bought a size too small to accenuate his arms.

IF i make it a modern au, eddie could like cyber stalk the bars instagram page or something, and see all the behind the scenes clips of steve being steve, him and his coworker robins attempts at learning new serving trick together, but steve not being tagged in any of the pictures and Eddie goes like ALL out, goes through all the followers bringing his phone super close to his face to look at all the profile icons, going through all the comments of the videos/pictures that steve is in, even going as far to go through all the likes.

eddie having no luck, but still following the bar, and turning on post notifications. for the next week he clicks on every notification he gets for the bar, during rehersal, when theyre on the tour bus, in the green room, hell even during his pee break in between songs. eddie having to beg his manager to book them for another night at steves work, and her going (eddie you guys are growing too much to be playing in little dive bars)(pls its only one night nance i dont even car if i have to pay the band and crew out of my own pocket) his manager agreeing reluctantly, they pull in a huge crowd, and still after the crowd and the smoke clears, eddie looks to the bar and sees steve isn’t even working.

I’m having random thoughts again so here are some thoughts on the Fruity Four

Despite her squeamishness after the Russians Ordeal, Robin is an avid fan of unsolved mysteries/true crime. This includes but is not limited to: cryptids, serial killers, unsolved murders, haunted houses. Her and Nancy get close because Nancy loves a good mystery, and they start a book club where it’s just them and they only read Agatha Christie.

People assume that when the Fruity Four are together Robin and Eddie are the chaotic ones, and that is sometimes true but only on days where Steve has a headache or is in some other pain. If Steve is feeling okay then it’s either he and Eddie being chaos children or all three of them and Nancy acts like a disappointed parent while also encouraging Robin to make the boys do crazier things.

Eddie fully corrupts Nancy, even if she doesn’t dress like it. He gets her into Metal and on Stobin Sleepover nights they go out and commit crimes and usually get picked up by Hopper who lets them off with a warning. On the rare occasions that he doesn’t find them, they end up having to call Joyce to come get them because they know that Steve and Robin have been drinking since 2 in the afternoon and physically cannot drive.

Eddie has ADHD and so weighted blankets are his favorite thing, but even better than a blanket is Steve. Steve is touch starved and loves feeling needed. This combines into them laying on the couch during movie nights with Steve fully on top of Eddie.

When the four of them, or six if they can get Jonathan and Argyle to join, all hang out they always end up in a big cuddle pile. The only sleeping position that never changes is Robin spooned up behind Steve. In the future, when she learns that it’s called Jetpacking when a smaller person is the big spoon she gets way too excited about it.

Robin nearly collapses the first time Nancy comes to one of Eddie’s shows actually dressed for the event. She had lost a bet with Steve and she had to let Eddie give her a full make over. Think Sandy’s pants from the end of Grease with one of Eddie’s old shirts cut to all hell and a denim jacket.

Steve and Robin, at their sleepovers, get unbelievably drunk. Depending on the week they had it varies but the go to is wine - Steve hadn’t had wine before Robin that he liked and it makes him giggly, he’d had liquor for a long time but he associates it with his parties from school. If they had a really shitty week they break out tequila and Robin makes margaritas. They each pick a movie that they think will make the other person laugh (half the time Robin picks a stoner comedy and it never fails). By the time they’ve finished the movies they’re very drunk and then the oversharing begins. Steve tells her all about his sex life, Robin tells him all about hers, they share fantasies and plan out how to make them happen together.

Robin gave Steve a music education after Starcourt and Eddie hates it because her education included more pop music, he will credit her for her knowledge of so many female artists though. Before Robin Steve listened to Pat Benetar, Springsteen, maybe some Bon Jovi. After Robin he listened to them too, but he mixed in Blondie, Heart, ABBA, and some Joan Jett. Eddie complains about it, but he still learns how to play Steve’s favorites on guitar and he manages to get the guys to do a metal cover of some of them.

Dustin was so excited when he found out about them dating, most of the kids were (except for Mike because he thinks he’s been cursed to have Steve date people in his life). Dustin is especially excited because he likes to take credit for getting them together, which Robin very vocally disagrees with because she put in a lot of work. The children are soon very not happy about it because they’re disgustingly in love and they have learned too much about their sex life (Robin always laughs when they say this and offers to clarify things because they really know nothing).

When everyone eventually leaves Hawkins the four of them get an apartment together wherever they go. Probably Boston so Nancy can go to Emerson, Robin gets into another Boston college, Steve starts off working at a coffee shop but eventually gets a job at a daycare, and Eddie works at a game store while working on making a name for the band. The job at the daycare is what leads Steve to go back to school, after one of the other teachers comments on how good he is and asks if he had ever considered being a teacher. He starts at a community college and then gets into a full time college after that to get his teaching certificate.

When living together they have strict weekend schedules. Saturdays are bar hopping, usually among the gay bars. Fridays are movie nights where they cuddle up on the couch and get take out and usually get drunk and/or high and just enjoy being together

Eddie and Nancy complain about how they can’t keep any parts of their relationships secret because Robin and Steve have no secrets from each other. (For example, Steve found out that Eddie got a Prince Albert piercing before he could even show him because Robin found out and told him, Nancy tried to surprise Robin with some lingerie and a fancy date night but Steve found out and spoiled it)((secretly they love sharing the SteveRobin megabeing but sometimes it can be annoying having partners that share a brain)

Robin and Steve live together in Indianapolis and a glass art studio opens down the street and offers lessons so of course Robin signs her and Steve for a one hour introductory course on glass blowing. Robin somehow landed their second lesson ever, so they’re still figuring out time slots and everything and also not many people have heard of it, because it’s literally just them and an old lady. So they start off with making some quick little paperweights and Steve definitely doesn’t stare at the unfairly hot instructor who’s name is Eddie the whole time. But how can he not, the guys wearing a cropped shirt and covered in a sheen of sweat from being near the kiln and he has tattoos and he’s pretty. In the end, the studios time slot was off so they didn’t actually get to do any glass blowing themselves, but Eddie decided to give them a quick demo. Only thing was, in order to do that he needed someone to kneel beside the bench he sat at to work with the glass and actually blow into the metal pipe to blow the glass out on the other end while he shaped it and well. Steve was the maybe too eager volunteer. Robin was fighting giggles at the innuendo of it all which was Steve getting on his knees to blow (into) a guys pipe. It was hilarious and Steve’s face was hilarious because he looked downright horny as he literally kneeled on a pillow beside their extremely hot instructor, blowing into the pipe whenever he was told to. And it was all fun and games and gay pining until Eddie said “good boy” When the glass was blown out as necessary, throwing Steve a knowing, flirty grin. Steve o course died right then and there and robin made sure to sign them up for more classes as soon as they got home.

having so many thoughts about music evolving from a hobby to a survival tool to a love language with the fruity four and i just 

after ‘86 they all have songs they can’t listen to anymore, all carry updated mixtapes like talismans in case, just in case, comfort and paranoia and protection all tapped out in the frequent little sounds of someone tapping their fingers against a plastic case. there’s a lot of time spent sitting together, back-to-back or curled around each other, hands clenching tight together while their safety songs play. 

as it sinks in that they’re safe, as they move away from hawkins and stubbornly build their own life, the weird co-dependent four of them, music comes with them. steve lowkey steals all of the best vinyl from his parents’ house, not that anyone but him was enjoying it there, so he hauls his whole collection to boston; eddie is constantly coming home from work with new tapes in his pockets because he thinks one of them would like this or just plain needs to listen to it for their own good; nancy starts keeping a little journal of lyrics that resonate with her, and one day she jots one down on a sticky note instead and by the end of the year one of their living room walls is covered in lyrics they love; robin learns new things like a sponge and instruments scratch that itch just as well as language does, constantly barging in to the music shop where eddie works to get her hands on something new and interesting until she can play steve’s song on so many different things (eddie and robin’s favorite, which steve and nancy hate them for, is the kazoo.)

it’s small things, too, ways each of them say i love you. nancy’s voice, still crackly and quiet from just waking up, crooning out a french love song as robin’s arms come around her waist while they both wait for the coffee to brew. steve taking the eyeliner from eddie’s hand as he gets ready for a show, just a snippet of put your makeup on, fix your hair up pretty, and meet me tonight in atlantic city sung soft and low between them, eddie smiling as he closes his eyes and hums the harmonica parts back. somehow steve and robin always end up with the same song stuck in their heads--sometimes they’ll be out all day and not see each other until dinner, when one of them is still humming it and the other can go “oh so it’s YOUR fault” and they’ll both launch into the bit they’re stuck on, full muppet voice at full volume. 1997 rolls around and “Bitch” comes out and ruins eddie and nancy forever, they’re thirty years old and so annoying about duetting that song in the kitchen with spatulas for microphones.

their home is loud and quiet and soft and wild and everything they need it to be, and it’s never silent. they love music and they love each other and none of them are lonely again.

the random thought passed through my head today and I'm pretty surprised that pairing hasn't become a Fandom Thing because it would be such an easy solution to pair off R/J and Keeley x Ruth (or whatever her name is...Ruth is my preference!)

I'm not saying they'd even make a good pairing or that it would be good to shoehorn them together... I'm just pondering 🤔

One thing is, if you had really bad executive dysfunction (like with depression, ADHD, etc) then not only would the fruity four take such good care of you, but they’d also make sure you never felt bad about it.

Anything you need help with, one of them is already extending a helping hand. If something’s going on, and there’s a reason it’s worse atm, they’re all sitting down to make sure whatever’s bothering you is fixed. And they know sometimes it just happens, there’s no reason behind it, and they won’t get mad at you for falling behind, even if you’re scared they will be. Once you explain about your ed, they really try their best to be understanding, I think some of them have even experienced it too (definitely Eddie has).

You’re their number one priority. So they’ll either lift you up and go help you do the thing you need, or they’ll take care of it for you if they can so you’re not stressing. They get in a semi-bad habit of doing the things themselves, because they don’t want you to feel bad or worry, and they want to help! Even if sometimes they know they should let you do it yourself, just with their help, they can’t help taking care of things for you! They’re doing it for you before they can even think about it. Or they’ll even tell you how it’s not important, and nothing to even worry about doing at all.

They just try to make sure you know that they could never think any less of you for what, struggling with an actual neurological issue, that already makes you feel bad for not being able to deal with it in the first place? They couldn’t do that to you. Their number one priority is just making sure you’re looked after, you’re loved, and you fully know it.
