I got my t'au colonist just in time for the New Year. Props to Laursen for pulling the 'Greater Good' card, too. No t'au could refuse an offer like that.

Everyone welcome Pro to the cult. She's a little seven-year-old air-caste t'au, who is the same rank that thirty-year-old Candlelight was in The Animist Alliance.

I don't know what kind of incredible feats Pro must have pulled off to reach this rank in her short years, and to earn a name like "Mont'yr", (which means "Veteran" or "War hero") but I'll bet her brave trait has something to do with it.

Buckeye seems to have adopted the role of "cool auntie" in the colony and has been tailed almost constantly by Bella and Pro, especially while she does important childcare tasks like playing with the baby.

Good job, Laursen. The cult must have an appropriately horrifying ritual room, after all.

Tierlist of the Great Sea costumes from Hyrule Warriors Legends.

I plan on doing more for the other costumes from the rest of the Adventure Mode maps.

(Costumes and explanations below the cut. There's a lot to go over, so it'll be long)

They probably couldn't make Warriors' costume based on Toon Link because it would likely be too similar to the Skyloft outfit, so they went with the crayfish pajamas. And I gotta say, I really like it. The blue shirt, white scarf, orange pants and gray boots go really well together.

I don't know why they made Impa wear pink. Maybe they were trying to reference the King of Red Lions? I'm not sure. But I do think it works pretty well for her.

I only just realized that Sheik's costume is colored that way as a reference to Tetra. That makes me like it a bit more. These colors are very striking, but they look good on her in my opinion.

Lana's costume is apparently based off the koroks, which I don't know if it matches up well with her. But the outfit looks really nice. My only complaint is that I don't know if the green hair fits her, so I've deducted points for that. Otherwise, she looks pretty cute and festive.

Of course, they gave Valor the princess dress that Tetra wears for the latter half of the game. The color of the dress is fine, but the dull armor and too bright hair kind of ruin it for me. Also, my partner is PISSED that this costume isn't based on Tetra. I think that would look substantially cooler, even if Sheik's costume would make it redundant.

I don't know who decided to make Ganondorf's costume fuck so goddamn much, but I am so glad they did! Everything about this Phantom Ganon costume is incredible. It kind of gives me Metroid Prime vibes, which is a very good thing.

Darunia's Phantom Hourglass goron costume isn't too big of a change, especially when compared to the masterpiece that was Ganondorf's. I don't really care for the brown spikes, but the stomach tattoo looks pretty cool.

The Laruto costume that Ruto has is very striking, and I think it works very well. Between the color combination and the character reference, I like it quite a bit.

I'm not sure why they decided to make Agitha a goth with this costume, but I think it suits her. Unfortunately, the way her face paint looks kind of lessens my fondness for it. But I definitely don't hate it.

Midna is already my favorite character in this game, so I was probably going to like whatever costume she had. But this Floormaster-inspired look is incredible! The changes are pretty slight, but the pink markings and the darker color of the Fused Shadow adds so much to what was already peak character design. In fact, she probably could have been on the top of S Tier if they'd leaned a bit more into it.

I don't know if Zant's costume is based on Gohdan or Jabun. Neither of those options really fit him, in fact they're kind of the opposite, and it may seem a bit weird to give him such bright colors. However, I actually like how he looks in this costume, even if it does look a bit more regal than he deserves.

Given that Fi's design was partially based on the Fairy Queen, this costume was only natural. And I'd describe it in the same way. This coloration is perfect for Fi, and the purple ribbon-markings down her legs are a nice touch.

Kalle Demos is one of my favorite Zelda bosses from a strictly aesthetic view. So it only makes sense that they were the base for one as, shall we say, colorful as Ghirahim. I love the gradients on his suit and cape, and I only recently noticed the green gem on his belt.

Like with Agitha, I don't really get the reference in Cia's costume. But I will not deny that she looks really good in that dark red, especially with the sunset colors of her shoulder cape. I do think that her hatless outfit is the best looking of the three, though.

Volga's costume is another with a subtle change. But like Midna's, I think that this one looks really good. The colors look good, and the reference to Valoo is quite fitting.

Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about Wizzro. I think his costume is based off of Jalhalla, which could have worked. But I really don't like the brown.

I'm already conflicted about how I feel about the design of Midna's true form, or 'Twili Midna' as she's called in Hyrule Warriors (I don't get why), and this costume only adds to it. I don't know what the reference was here. And while I don't hate the color combination they used, I don't think it works with her. It's really a shame.

Also, why did they change the color of her skin here?

I have a lot of questions about Young Link's costume. What is the costume supposed to be? Why is he purple? Why does he have red hair? I don't hate this costume, but it doesn't make much sense to me.

This may be surprising, but I actually kind of like how Tingle looks in this costume. The gray and blue work well together, and I like the reference to Ankel or Knuckel. It's good.

Given what costume they gave to Warriors, I think it makes sense that Linkle's is based off of Aryll's dress. Not only do the colors work, but I like the little flower designs on the tunic. It's adorable.

Oh, Hell yes! I love Skull kid's costume. Not only do the white and purple go well together, but they look perfect when put with the colorful Majora's mask. I think it's also based on the poes, which also works. I can't think of anything I would improve with this one.

Another Link, another set of crayfish pajamas. I don't know why he has a belt, but it doesn't take too much away from the appeal. It's just a solid design. Although, if they did this one twice, then maybe they could have made Valor's costume look more like Tetra

Speaking of Tetra, her costume is also pretty cool. I think it's cool how the colors of her jacket and bandana are swapped. My only complaint is that I don't really care for the striped shirt. But I guess it helps to get the reference to Niko across. I like this one, even if my partner doesn't get why she needs a Great Sea costume

Finally, we have King Daphnes. I really don't know who or what his costume is based on. But I also don't hate it. The bright colors are very striking and mesh decently well together. It actually kind of reminds me of a movie I saw when I was a kid.

CAINE:

makes a huge deal of things whenever you dye your hair simply because he thinks what you do with yourself is cool; and since its the digital world you can get away with dying your hair as often as you want! cant damage what technically isnt real! probably makes hair color suggestions and is absolutely thrilled when you actually follow through within the coming days. prepare to have some weird combos, though... probably changes the color of his suit to match your hair... even adds stripes if your hair has stripes, or any other pattern dyed into it

POMNI:

honestly? more power to you, thats her reaction mostly. would pomni dye her own hair, or otherwise get anything to modify her appearance? probably not... but she thinks you look great with it... probably asks why you chose the current color you went with, as well as asking whenever you change. nothing like "oh WHY? why THAT color?" but like genuine non-rude curiosity... doesnt like outwardly betting or wondering what color youre going to pick outloud since she doesnt want you to think shes rude or something

RAGATHA:

has probably made multiple color variations of accessories she has made for you so you can wear anything without having the colors clash... thinks your hair is pretty, me thinks! doesnt matter what color it is, could literally be the unpleasant green-pink-brown color gradient meme and she would still find something nice to say about it... does sometimes wonder what color youre going to choose next... probably has a hush hush bet going on between her jax and zooble on what color youre going to choose next... huh what no jax didnt just get all moody because you walked in with aqua blue hair- no hes not passing something to ragatha, what are you talking about?

JAX:

as mentioned above he makes bets with some of the other circus members on what color youre going to rock next... if you ask him for any suggestions on what color you should change to next, dont expect any serious answers. even if he is being serious, jax doesnt strike me as the type to care much about colors and shades so hes probably going to drop the most basic colors. ..

on a bad day he might just not recognize you for a short moment... i originally said that as a joke but considering he sometimes forgets gangle is literally standing right next to him, i dont... think thats much of a joke... but after the initial confusion, i think he would really like whatever color you choose! likes playing with your hair, if you let him! he finds it soothing in its own way, and now he just has pretty colors to look at! cant explain why but i feel like he would be very good at identifying colors, so if you come in rocking some new color hes going to ask if its (insert specific shade of red that no one knows the name of. like. amaranth red.. or something..)

ZOOBLE:

honestly, they get it! i like to think that they swap out their pieces in order to fit whatever look or vibe they want for the day; aaaand i personally hc that in the real world they would dye their hair and get a bunch of piercings! though, they dont really remember much stuff from the real world, at least not clearly... but the point still stands, you guys probably get together to make a new look together! though, on days where they dont give any input on what hair color you choose next, theyre making bets with jax and ragatha... dont know why but i think zooble wins the most in the bets... shrugs

oh she thinks its so pretty! has probably always loved things like that, since its a form of self expression! and she can kind of relate to that since shes an artist, albeit her medium is paper rather than her body... thinks... probably gives shy recommendations for colors if you ask her, is also bad at masking (lol) her surprise when you actually take her idea into consideration and follow through with it... makes her feel some type of way that someone cares enough about her ideas that they literally apply it to their appearance, you know?

The castle, half pink and half gray, shimmered in the bright sunlight. It was the perfect weather; bright and sunny but not hot, with a clear sky and a gentle breeze to keep everyone cool.

Protector Sausage of Sanctuary smiled excitedly, shifting from foot to foot and making her sunflower skirt sway with the energy of her anticipation. 

Next to her, Fwhip of Gobland rolled her eyes, amused. “We’re gonna get to the front of the line eventually,” she said, eyeing the vibrating ball of energy that was currently her girlfriend and sidling a step away so she wouldn’t get knocked over. Much like a dog, Sausage often forgot how big she was and could easily crush the much smaller goblin woman by accident. 

Ahead of them, the line to the entrance to the party stretched, most rulers paired with their partners as they waited. Goddess Joelle and her boyfriend Mayor Lizzie, the two of them holding hands and smiling sweetly at each other, Scottie of Chromia and Sheriff Jamie twirling each other in circles, Archaeologist Pixel patiently listening to her girlfriend Oli the bard tell some dramatic story, loud enough that almost the entire line could hear her excited chattering. 

Despite not being a couple, Great Witch Shelby and Pirate Jo stood together, seemingly having reconciled after their duel weeks ago for the hand of Prince Kathrin. 

At the entrance to the castle, accepting invitations and welcoming everyone into the party, Prince Kathrin stood with Prince Gem, the two royals having hosted and planned everything. 

Everyone was in beautiful dresses. Sausage admired her own dress, a gorgeous strapless navy dress decorated with sunflowers and a bright yellow short-sleeve croptop jacket ontop, everything complimenting each other amazingly. Sneaking a look to the side, she admired her girlfriend’s dress too, the very form fitting strapless red dress accenting the goblin’s curves and the boob window acting as the cherry on top. 

Everyone was dressed amazingly, from Pixel’s dusky blue ballgown and Oli’s embellished lavender gown, to Mayor Lizzie’s simple pink dress and Goddess Joelle’s green chiton, Jamie’s adorable denim skirt and white blouse with suspenders and Scottie’s gradient blue-purple and gold decorated dress, and Prince Kathrin’s flowery, frilly short skirted dress complimented by Prince Gem’s coral-orange and white underskirt ruffle layered gown next to him. 

After a few more minutes of waiting, everyone was finally admitted, and the party officially began. The ballroom they were escorted to was a tad spooky and dark for a tea party, Sausage mused to herself, but it was still fantastic. 

Scottie and Jamie were already dancing, Scottie whispering something in Jamie’s ear that made her blush brightly, protesting loudly at whatever inappropriate comment Scottie had just made. 

Despite the party having just started less than half an hour back, Oli was already drunk, clumsily climbing onto a table and strumming her lute off key, singing something about cute archeologists (it took her six tries to pronounce it right in her inebriated state), and shovels going in holes. 

Sausage giggled, sneaking up behind Fwhip as she was talking to Mayor Lizzie, who was absolutely rocking his dress, the pink fabric matching amazingly with his short, spiky pink hair. Lizzie made eye contact with her, smiling evilly as Sausage scooped Fwip up with a snicker, Fwhip herself letting out a shocked yelp as her feet left the ground. 

“Sausage, nO-” she wailed, dramatically drooping out of her girlfriend’s arms to look back at Lizzie, who was watching avidly as Joelle stopped next to her, not even bothering to conceal her laughter. “Someone save meeeee, I’m being kidnappedddd~” Fwhip whined, making a pouty face at everyone who looked her way as Sausage plopped her down at the dance floor.

Bowing with a flourish, Sausage offered Fwhip her hand with a shy smile, which Fwhip accepted with a fake sigh, and the two swept onto the dancefloor, joining the other couples spinning around to the tune of the actual music, not Oli’s drunk wailing. 

In the shadowy corner, Kathrin and Shelby were standing together, both holding drinks but more interested in kissing, leaving the rest of the party to its own devices in favor of being with each other. 

Gem watched all of this from his vantage point by the drinks table, sipping a cup of orange juice peacefully. Maybe he’d go dance later. 

Noticing him all alone, Lizzie walked over, leaving Joelle by the table where Pixel was trying to coax Oli down while Joelle laughed and suggested even more inappropriate rhymes for Oli to sing at the top of her lungs. 

“Having fun?” Lizzie asked, grabbing a random drink for himself and drinking it in one gulp, leaning on the wall next to Gem, who shrugged. 

“I might go dance later, I just don’t want to get drunk since I’m absolutely certain everyone here is going to be hammered by the time the party's over and I want to record it all to blackmail them with later-” 

Lizzie snickered, nodding. “I will definitely join you in that goal; I’ve already got a few pictures of Oli’s drunk singing and dancing.”

Gem snorted, covering his mouth with a hand and turning the laugh into a very fake cough. “Good luck with that, I’ve never seen Oli have any shame whatsoever-”

Lizzie nodded forlornly in agreement, and took another drink, this one nonalcoholic. Sipping at it, he contemplated the prince next to him. “No partner, huh?” 

Gem shook his head. “Was never really interested in that sort of thing. Sausage told me I could be aroace, and she might be right, but I honestly just don’t really care.” 

“Those of us who are immune to the wiles of the body are the highest of us all,” Lizzie said solemnly, making Gem choke with laughter and spill his drink a little. “No, don’t say it like that-”

Their giggles attracted the attention of Kathrin, who had emerged from his snog-fest with Shelby in the corner and was futilely trying to pretend he hadn’t had his tongue down Shelby’s throat minutes ago. 

“Your lipstick is smudged,” Lizzie informed Kathrin in greeting, grinning as Kathrin’s eyes widened and he wiped at his mouth, only serving to smear it more. Gem tried and failed to conceal his snickers, and Kathrin gave up and sighed, joining the other two rulers by the wall.

“There’s no point in trying to hide it, is there,” he said, less of a question than a resigned statement. Lizzie nodded along with Gem, both of them sporting evil smiles.

“Even if your makeup didn’t give you away, literally everyone saw you in that corner,” Gem added, offering Kathrin a napkin, which he gratefully accepted and used to wipe his makeup off.

At the dance floor, Scottie and Jamie were having a dance off with Sausage and Fwhip, all four of them drunk and mostly just spinning to make their skirts flare out and kissing each other, regardless of whether the person in question was their partner or not. 

Pixel had finally bribed Oli down, leading the woozy and stumbling bard to a chair and giving her water. Joelle had wandered away, bored, and was hanging out with Jo, the two of them probably arguing about who was the prettier and better of the two. 

Shelby was valiantly attempting to act normal, dancing and spinning around next to the whorefest that was Sausage, Fwhip, Scottie, and Jamie giving up on dancing and kissing in a pile under a table that had somehow ended up in the middle of the dance floor. Kathrin was watching Shelby avidly, trying and failing to hide his attention wavering towards him. 

Snickering, Gem gave Kathrin a gentle shove, making them stumble forward. “We can all see your pining, Kathrin, just go dance with him already-” he said, Lizzie nodding in agreement.

Smiling gratefully at the other two rulers, Kathrin put his forgotten drink down, hurrying to the dance floor and joining Shelby, the two of them dancing a romantic slow dance as the musicians started playing a slow and sweet song for them. 

The party was winding down, Pixel and Oli having departed at some point, the four very drunk rulers being helped up and out to guest bedrooms by a small army of servants. Gem exchanged money with Lizzie, a bet on whether the four would end up sharing a room or if they were too drunk to do anything but pass out. 

Kathrin and Shelby wandered out together, exchanging kisses and probably heading to Kathrin’s royal bedchamber, since it was his castle. Joelle came up to Lizzie, swaying and wobbling as she drunkenly flopped onto Lizzie, mumbling something about cuddles. 

“Well, that’s my cue to get this one back home,” Lizzie said good-naturedly, smiling at his silly drunk wife. 

The room was empty, servants swooping in to begin the cleanup process. Gem decided to leave as well, heading back to his empire with a content heart. It was a good day.

(woah, first ever tumblr post after years of knowing this site exists!)

so i have these official winx figurines i got impulsively years ago. they are believix shaped and their colors make me regret owning them every time i look at them.

not my video, but mine are exactly the same, with purple-haired bloom and blonde flora and missing paint on roxy and everyone having the exact same skin color. i think their eyes are less detailed irl, not nightmare material, just very wonky. i also have four knockoff believix figurines of a different kind and those are way cuter but have the same skin color problem :/ (stella, musa, aisha and tecna. i should try completing the set someday)

i sometimes think of repainting all of them, but that's not something i've ever done and i don't have the funds or control over my adhd to start right now. however i can think of color palettes that i like more in the meantime. luckily i'm not redesigning the shapes, so i can just use coloring pages for this :D

so this is bloom. her main color is turquoise like in her base transformation, but some elements are a darker teal and an even darker blue that looks slightly violet next to the teal.

the heart on her chest is yellow, just like the gem in her base transformation. i imagine they're the same gem. my biggest winx disappointment was the gem not having any lore behind it.

her arm warmers and socks are light warm green which is a shade of yellow you have to use when you don't want the believix to look exactly like her iconic civilian outfit.

there are a lot of squiggles on fabric edges that represent a fancy pattern that i won't be able to reproduce on a tiny figurine anyway. yellow and dark blue next to each other remind me of sailor uranus a bit too much but also look cool as fuck. i might put some actual green there later.

the gradient on the sleeves is a bit misaligned and i'm not sure if i like it, but it also matches the skirt so it's fine as long as i don't look at it too closely. i'm not super happy with the lace i drew on her corset either. i'll need to look at actual corsets and shirts to see how i can improve that.

the streaks in her hair are now purple as a reference to the figurine's original hair color. i'm very happy to have found a shade of purple that works. the color picker says it's a desaturated magenta. i never studied colors so i get amazed every time i succeed like this

not sure if i want the figurine to look exactly like this, but it wouldn't transfer 1 to 1 and my main requirement for my winx dolls is their faces looking sweet and not scary anyway... it's definitely a good start!

(Everyone) What's you guys' favourite drinks?

- The Islanders rely on their favourite beverages to take them through the demanding task of entertaining parkgoers. Some other fun facts:

- Stealth will only drink Coca-Cola out of glass bottles. "The plastic ones just aren't as cool!"

- Colossus also likes bubble tea. Her favourite flavour is vanilla, but it's pretty uncommon in the stores, so she tends to settle for taro. She tried making it herself once, but it ended in disaster. The Lost City folks and her have wonderful tea parties every week!

- Saw is lactose intolerant, but also allergic to soy, so his go-to alternative is oat. In fact, if he can't have oat milk in his coffee for whatever reason, he'd rather just get tea.

- Xavier's drink is a whisky on the rocks with a bit of still lemonade. They're very particular about most things, and also likes to talk to the night bartender. Who knows why Derren's having a coffee at this time of night, though.....

Forget just this genre for a sec though- Aponia has one of my favorite designs in the game

It's the skirt, it's entirely the skirt

I'm glad they kept the outfit mostly black and white (other than the bits of jewelry used to keep the outfit cohesive) because I think too much color would've just distracted from the skirt

I also appreciate they made the white fabric different textures. It really helps to separate the veil from everything else

The usage of vines and flowers to break the symmetry of the design is a fun nod to Aponia's failed attempts to control the world around her

I think from a more objective standpoint, this design would be in B or C tier, but it's my list and I like the design, so it's going in A tier

The bikini top and mini tutu are goofy (I think I'd personally just make the top a turtleneck crop top with a book window cut out, and the tutu into shorts and a fanny pack), but I kinda like them

One being really committing to the whole "it looks like a regular outfit" think, focusing on the changing roles of valkyries and moving more towards the aesthetics of APHO

My other idea would be keep the story the same, but change her design to be more of a throw back to early valks, leaning more into the mech suit idea

ok so (this is a lighting tutorial not a rendering tutorial btw) here's my Ten Step (not) Program For Achieving Strawberry Soda Floatness

i actually usually start with pretty normal/true to reference colors bc i often don't have incredibly intense, neon lighting. however, im gonna be using the mari piece i just finished to demo, where i wanted to pinkify the drawing from the start.

here are some of the base colors (skin, hair, shirt): as you can see even the white shirt leans into saturation/color, and they're all kept around the red/pink area.

ok so here (skipping about 15 steps) i already did the rendering using a color shifting method where instead of using multiply or directly lowering the luminosity (?) i shift the hue closer to the blue/purple category and decrease luminosity + slightly up saturation of the color. so like, on mari's skin you can see that the shadows are pink and purple rather than like. orange or something.

for the background i filled it with a lightish pink color and used the sunset gradient tool on a 30-50% opacity to establish the light source.

alright, here's where the fun begins.

i started off by using an overlay layer (later lowered to 28%, but just use whatever looks good) on the darker colors where the light would shine the brightest. this layer originally included highlights on the face and shirt as well, but i took those off bc the yellow on dark colors looks like an orange and the yellow on lighter colors looks like a fucking highlighter.

first i added a sort of reflected/second light source of this fun little pink on soft light. i did 2 layers bc 1 wasn't bright enough for me. then on the lighter areas i added white highlights. important little tip: when i pick colors for overlays i usually use yellow as the primary light source, pink as a midtones/secondary light source, and blue or purple as the shadows. however, this is not a rule, just an example:

in this drawing i have blue as the light source & red as the shadow. my tips for picking colors to overlay with: most programs/devices have an option for you to turn off the saturation. whichever color looks lightest is often best for the highlights. you can obviously change the brightness but yeah just make sure your highlights aren't darker than your shadows

apologies for the inconsistent opacities, you get the idea. so i would like to make a disclaimer here that for my hxhbb piece (left) i used only one direct lighting overlay, which was the yellow. the amount of those overlays i use per piece varies. anyways i added a lighter green as a substitute for the white highlights on the darker colors

lil bit of a secret sauce: on an overlay layer i airbrushed yellow onto roughly half of her and pink on the other side. unifies the colors + lighting and just looks cool

okay now here's how to actually strawberry soda float-ify your art (sorry lol that was just background info):

the sunset gradient map is your best friend here. you can really just fuck around with any gradient maps, doesn't really matter. now you can also change the brightness, contrast, saturation, etc. what i usually do is up the saturation & luminosity together: +50 saturation and +25-50 luminosity. experiment with blending modes and opacities and shit

when you're done, uhh, congratulations. the gradient maps are really carrying the entire thing the yellow and white lighting is just to torture myself with

Dyed purple hair (natural hair colour is black. He often dyes his hair, usually in cool tones as well, right now he's in his purple phase. He's done white a few times, but he usually likes to make it a gradient.)

Purple as his main colour (since I already used up green + blue for his sisters and I wanted to continue with the cool tones).

Green accessories that match his eyes, including his mother's necklace which is a gift from the original Ceres 👀

Mint lollipop (he has a sweet tooth like his father + mint lollipops is what Ceres like(s/d))

Similar to his mother he has green diamonds in his design. Otherwise he looks like a carbon copy of his father XD just with his mother's colours... In my defense Vail's design is already so good why would I change it XD

Personality wise? He's probably pretty chill and laid-back (just like his dad 💅). As the youngest child (4-6 years younger than his sisters) he's pretty doted upon by his older sisters, although he feels like he needs to take care of his less reliable older sister Yuelan sometimes. But either way, people don't really have expectations for him and he's free to do as he likes. He has a fierce sweet tooth (all his siblings do, but his is prob the strongest, and YL close after. MX also has a sweet tooth but she will let her siblings take the last piece of cake as the oldest sis even if she wants it). What does he do? I have not decided but he is definitely a driver of some sort. I'd give him a drive of at least 70, hopefully 80 and he probably mostly drives motorbikes but would totally drift in a racecar. He is also more muscle and a fighter than his sisters. I imagine he's pretty similar to his father so they're like yup… that's his son alright XD

From when I was four to when was twelve, every Thanksgiving was spent in the petrified woods.

My un-grandfather had a ranch. Un-grandma was a schoolteacher. They were the parents of my father's ex-girlfriend, the woman he'd dated before he met my mother; they'd enfolded him into the family, which meant the same for my mother and then for my siblings and I. So every Thanksgiving, our family, and Un-Auntie and Un-Uncle, and all of the Un-cousins, would drive from Cottonwood and Prescott and come together to roast a truly massive turkey, make pies and mashed potatoes, the women telling stories in the kitchen, the kids running around making a lot of noise in the open desert, the men talking ugly politics and hitting their knees with their hands.

I was the eldest of my mother's five children. My Un-Cousin Elle was the eldest of her own as-many siblings, and I adored her. Where I was always a little sparrow, snaky tangles of black hair and starveling black eyes and changeable paperbag skin, she was all entirely pale, carved of jade, a swan; cheeks like Mom's china plate, stormcloud eyes, and perfectly straight hair that until she was ten or so was just about as white as the fur on a polar bear. She was three years or so older than I was, which meant that she got ahead of me pretty quickly and I never caught up. But sometimes, on those Thanksgivings, she could be persuaded to walk with me out into the desert, past the places where other fencelines had once been, the squared-out wrecks of cabins long since sunscalded into dust. The fallen trees of a millions-of-years-gone forest were everywhere as we walked, pink and cream and brown and black, some of them opalized, some of them very opaque. I'd sit on one in particular to tie my shoe, as it always came untied at around the same place.

I was not made for the desert, and it was never very kind to me. But on those afternoons, I loved it. I would sit there, on the beautiful corpse of a massive tree that had died before humans existed, and try hard to imagine what it was like to walk where there was shade, and cool, and the calling of quiet things under the leaves. I'd look down the long barrel of a trunk and try to picture how tall it would have been, when it lived.

A couple of miles from the house there was a rock outcropping with a massive raven's nest on it from a few seasons back--we couldn't imagine where they'd brought all the sticks from, and sometimes we'd find the footprints of great cats, larger than the spread of my hand--and we'd climb the sandstone and sit there, wishing we had wings.

The sky was all around, at that height, and the pink desert retreated a little. We would stay there until the sun started to slip down close to the greening horizon, the air above us getting colder and colder, and the sandstone underneath us still warmer than our skins. There was a sort of bowl in the stone that hugged my hips and spine just so, comforting and cradling in a way that was familiar for reasons I couldn't quite remember, and I'd lie there with my sweater unbuttoned, feeling the radiating of the earth. And then as the stars picked themselves out directly above us, my cousin would say "We'd probably better get back before Grandma gets mad," and I'd stand up and be instantly cold. We'd be faster, the walk back, than we were on the walk out. The lights of the ranch house would be gold, and the sky all purple, and everything else casting dark blue and green shadows as the snakes and the crickets came out.

I took stones home, from that desert, every year. Chips of fallen tree that were of a particularly clear saffron-to-white gradient, or that had intimations of the bark still on them. I'd put them in the pocket of my little red sweater, and when we got back to the Verde Valley I'd put them on the windowsill and look at them before I fell asleep.

I lost the ability to go to my Un-Grandfather's for Thanksgiving when my dad took off when I was thirteen, and I lost the chunks of petrified wood when Mom threw me out at eighteen for being queer and I lost everything else that I owned. But when I think about the Petrified Forest now, I think about being cupped so gently in the hand of the desert, a tiny girl caught between a raven's nest and the footprints of a mountain lion, and I feel warm.

Cursed Petrified Wood

The Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona has always attracted people with its beautiful fossilized logs of trees that existed over 200 million years ago. Even though it is prohibited to take specimens from the park, people nonetheless steal pieces of petrified wood all the time. But what has also been reported, as far back as the 1930′s, is that those who take anything from the park are equally cursed with bad luck. The museum at the park has an entire room dedicated to the confessions from these thieves, usually written as letters sent to the park along with the pieces of petrified wood that were stolen. There is also a “Conscience Pile” of fossils that sits at one of the entrances to the park, where countless thieves have quietly returned the fossils they stole. The rocks are not put back in the park, and merely sit as a monument to the curse of the petrified wood.

this took me almost the whole evening. I'm not sure if it's worth it. nevertheless, I will be doing this once more when mcc21 rolls around! stay around for that if you want to.

Please if you want to, do the Amity Arena Summer Beach outfits so we can talk about positive things too, because goddamn the atlas outfits. Jeepers.

Really, Amity Arena has outfits all across the board. Some are great, others are average, and then there’s some that are just trash. The Summer Beach outfits are actually pretty cute for the most part, and I really like them.

This is honestly really cute. I love the booty shorts, the tied shirt with the crop top underneath, even the sandals are adorable. It’s suitable for a beach outfit, it’s a Yang outfit without a doubt, and even the X octopuses are so adorable. 

Even though she has very little of her colour on the outfit, which for a RWBY character is still a negative, it’s not a huge deal for an alternative outfit on a mobile game. The colouring is still nice together, and I like how she looks in red. It really suits her.

He looks so dumb and I love it. This is what Ironwood wears on the few holidays he allows for himself.

The Hawaiian shirt, the shorts, the little sandals, I love it. The blue of his shirt works with the red and green details, and the overall colour scheme is pretty coherent while still keeping to his established colour. It’s a cool colour palette, and his prosthetics being clear on show is nice to see so normalised. It’s also great for people like me to see how far his prosthetics go on his body.

Also his gun is a water gun and that’s great.

Nora’s is a bit more average for me. The pufferfish swimming cap is a little dumb for me, and the colours together is kinda gross looking. I really would’ve prepared pink and white together, at least keep to the established colour scheme with some nicer colours.

I love his little floaties. It’s such overkill and great for Neptune with his little fear of water. He’s safe from drowning. 

I like that the red lifejacket is similar to his usual red jacket, and these colours work well with his bright blue hair and orange snorkel goggles. The only thing I’m not a fan on is the green on his swimsuit, it might work more with more blue, just to let the colour go through the outfit. 

She is so adorable. 

I love the swim shirt and shorts together, the red background works with the bright white emblems and white shorts, especially with the small red accents. With the shoes, it helps to keep her red throughout the outfit, especially without the red cape behind her. 

I love the goggles on her head. The blue is nice contrast with the red, and works against the colour of her dark hair. 

Adorable. 

It’s a bit difficult to see with how she’s posed, but the swimsuit with the purple and white works with the black shorts, especially with her long black hair. The bow and it’s design works similarly as well, since the bright colours help the bow stand out against the black hair. 

The goggles are a bit much in combination with the bow, either have the goggles or the bow, having both just clutters the top half. 

This is such a cute design. 

I love the hair changed into a ponytail over the shoulder, and the straw hat is such a cute accent for her. She looks like the type to carry a big bag of everything to the beach, especially sunscreen. Atlas doesn’t get sun. 

The blue dress is such a cute design, and the gradient to lighter blue and white is so pretty. It contrasts with her pale skin, and while I’d like some more white to show through, I do think this blue is very pretty.  

Sun is the perfect dude for a beach outfit. He looks so cute.

It’s a very casual wear, and the blue looks so good with the yellow of his hair and the white of his hat, it fits with his established colour scheme and fashion. The little waves on his shorts are cute and add a bit of details to the little clothing he has.

Plus, I think his eyes are black like they were originally, which I appreciate. It’s very neutral with his otherwise bright colour scheme. 

Her skin is so desaturated. Ashy crocodile. 

The skin tone aside, it’s a cute outfit otherwise. The green and black work well together, especially with her desaturated skin. I love the tock on her shorts and little decal on her chest, and the sunglasses on her head are cute.
