• overhyped, appropriately hyped, underhyped •
I was feeling brave, so here we are!
I do want to be clear on one thing though: I am not here to bash any books or any readers. I think everyone should read what they want, love what they love, and not be made to feel bad about that. Reading is subjective – and there are absolutely books out there for everyone.✌️

Top 10 of 2023 ✨
These were the reads that wouldn’t leave my head, that I loved the most, that I can’t stop thinking about even at the end of the year. What were yours?

You've heard of whitewashing characters. I do the opposite. Unless it's integral to the plot and it's specifically mentioned the characters are white, I WILL imagine the characters to be POC. Nothing will stop me from imagining Byeon Wooseok as the hot black haired character thank you very much.

Really loving the similarities between The Hemlock Queen and Seige and Storm, how the main characters share a tether and each other’s powers of light and dark.

Summary: Becoming King is a difficult transition for Bastian, and Lore can see that he needs to let off some steam. When she suggests he pick a fight with Gabriel, however, the outcome is not what any of them expected - but inevitable as gravity, nonetheless.
Length: 3k (one-shot)
Pairing: Lore/Bastian Arceneaux/Gabriel Remaut
Rating: E

I absolutely ADORED The Foxglove King by Hannah Whitten but if Lore ends up with Gabe after the shitty way he was acting I'm gonna RIOT.
I just. I'm gonna need some character growth. And I'm so so so excited for The Hemlock Queen to come out. I'll be feral until April 2024, thank you.

March Wrap Up 2024--
Tumblr media
What a month that was. Did I read more than what I was supposed to? Yes. Am I mad about it? No. My goal for the year is to stay between 52 and 104 books read which means I need to read roughly 8 books per month (technically 8.6 or something like that) at the maximum. All this basically means is that I have to stick to reading 8 books next month. I blame the fact that my library hold came in 2 weeks early and I really didn't want to get back in line for it since it took so long to come in. Let's get to what I read and what I rated what I read.
Comics/Graphic Novels-- 1. Teen Titans: Raven by Kami Garcia and Gabriel Picolo--3.75 stars (original rating).
Novellas-- 1. Must Love Hockey by Sarina Bowen (Kindle)--3.75 stars.
2. The Dead Cat Tail Assassins by P. Djeli Clark (NetGalley)--4 stars.
Novels-- 1. No Coincidence by Rafat Kosik--1.75 stars.
2. The Three-Body Problem by Cixin Liu--3 stars.
3. The Stardust Thief by Chelsea Abdullah--3.75 stars.
4. Everyone on This Train Is a Suspect by Benjamin Stevenson (Library)--4 stars.
5. Ghost Station by S.A. Barnes (NetGalley)--3.25 stars.
6. The Foxglove King by Hannah F. Whitten--4.25 stars (original rating).
The average star rating for the month ended up being 3.5 stars which was such a surprise given that this is the month with my worst rated book of the year so far. Not too shabby though.

I'm currently reading The Foxglove King by Hannah Whitten, and I can't tell if I like it or not. It's both very well-written and very YA. No, it's not technically YA and the protagonists are all in their early-to-mid twenties, but the relationship between the point of view character and the two guys she's running around with is very much along those lines (she's so powerful and full of secrets and they're rivals and they're both trying to keep her attention and one is Lawful Good and the other is a Misunderstood Bad Boy) plus the whole lusciously described, super-decadent setting and the narrative dressing the characters up like dolls (which is not inherently a bag thing! It's always my favorite part of every video game! But it's definitely a thing). And the magical system is dark and edgy, which, again, I like dark and edgy magic--see all the Dark Rise fan art I reblogged awhile back--but all of it together feels really familiar.
So I can't tell now if what I'm experiencing is a problem with the book itself--I'm definitely more engaged with these characters than I was in their counterparts in acotar--or if I'm having a metaphorical allergic reaction to the whole genre (I do have a severe intolerance to most types of love triangles). Idk, but I'll report back if I figure it out.
