📍HAPPY DEATH DAY | l.felix smau (masterlist)
synopsis
-> rich yet down-to-earth. devilishly handsome yet an angelic sweetheart. before you transferred to your new university, lee "yongbok" had already established a fine reputation for himself—beloved by everyone, a personality that can bring world peace. but something seems off—because you've definitely seen him before, and he's not as sweet as he makes himself out to be.
pairing: fem!reader x slc!felix (snobby!y/n x mysterious!felix) (y/n is a bit like veronica lodge—the riverdale one, not the comics one, sorry lolz) (a bit of an OC y/n, just cause she has nicknames and identifiers and whatnot) (felix is called "leo"—from lee yongbok—just cuz that's hot) | friends to enemies to friends to lovers ig idk
genre: smau, light fluff and crack, semi-angst, mystery(?), strangers? enemies? to lovers? idk. no promises. it is what it is. (a bit of season 1 riverdale vibes)
warnings: mentions of death, illness, accidents, injuries, implications of s*lf h*rm and s**cide (but not from any idol, just background side characters). slight violence. criminals. sexual themes (just mentions, nothing too detailed, no smut). cussing. extreme language. R16??? 18+??? a tamer version of SLC nevermind that, i changed my mind, it's not as tame. high society scumminess, lots of ill gossiping and reputation destroying. think gossip girl but worse. mentions of the dark web and the black market.
notes: this is a spin-off series from one of the characters (felix) in my other smau (SWEET LIKE CANDY), but you don't need to read that series first before this one. this can be enjoyed as a standalone in itself because felix was only a side character in that fic. there will rarely be any mentions or allusions to the old fic, maybe here and there but it won't make it confusing.—the university/setting is VERYYYYY far from where SLC is set, imagine small town in the middle of nowhere type of beat where felix won't get caught.

⋆ the angst part is like... real angsty (esp number 52, it got my eye twitching)
⋆ the angst part has some sensitive topics like being blamed for someone's death and mental illnesses
⋆ it was really hard for me to think of fluff prompts so i got almost all prompts after number 15 from here.
⋆ I don't write smuts (U), yandere(U), mafia(C), agere(C) or poly(C)
U = uncomfortable writing
C = i just can't write these, the final product is usually shit HELP

Okay so this is a bit of a personal post, but one of my coworkers is trying to get donations for IVF treatment!
She’s been trying to have a kid for years and she has gone through so much trying to make the one thing she wants a reality. In the year and a half I’ve known her, I’ve seen her go above and beyond and deal with so much with this process.
A child is truly priceless, but for some of us, it takes a lot to get there.
I love her to bits and I’ve given what I can, but I would love to try and get her more support and recognition!
The goal is 10k, and right now we are a little short of $250 — so even a dollar makes a difference!
Even if you can’t donate, please share and reblog so others can see!
Thank you to anyone who donates— my coworker is ineffably grateful for all the help she receives!

Last Saturday night I was at a David Duchovny concert in Vancouver. The concert venue was at the Imperial - a great venue- but in a neighborhood that the Urban Dictionary says is the worst neighborhood in all of Canada and some homeless advocacy groups argue is the poorest neighborhood in all of North America. Many of us at the concert had traveled to Vancouver from across the globe and there was some fear and trepidation which I over heard from other concert goers about this neighborhood. I had worked as a homeless advocate and have been on the board of a homeless shelter in the 90′s in Albuquerque. I want to share my viewpoints of my experience in the worst neighborhood in Canada from an X-File frame of view because what brought me to Vancouver on October 14 was, of course, to see David Duchovny in Vancouver where the X-files was and is being filmed during a week-end which included 1013 Friday. How does homelessness and the X-file find a theme together? That is outlined in the link to the video above.
I guess one way to set the mood is to say that my friend and I were only spending a week-end in Vancouver, but many other David Duchovny fans had been in Vancouver a week and had been to many famous filming sites. My friend and I were staying at a Ramada fairly near the venue. We drove through the area at first looking for parking before deciding that the valet parking at the Ramada was the best choice. As we drove by I said- looking at the homeless and the city streets and remembering the video above- “oh, my God, this is the neighborhood they shot “Home Again” in.” I realize, of course, the complete insensitivity to the plight of homelessness to see it in such focused X-file terms, but it was my frame of mind at the time. My friend and I did in fact look for the filming sites of “Home Again” as we walked around the neighborhood, but because it is from the last season which we have not yet seen hundreds of times (only dozens) we were unable to locate exact locations. We did watch the episode again back in Seattle the night before I flew home.
On Saturday morning we decided to walk to the Ovaltine Restaurant (the filming location of a scene in Jose Chung) and to go by the venue. We found ourselves walking down what I now realize is the area considered the worst two blocks in at least Canada and possibly North America. The poverty was clear- people living in tents on the street a few blocks away from some fine, upscale and beautiful neighborhoods. We then went to the Ovaltine Restaurant, the venue, back to the hotel for an hour of two, back to the venue to stand in line (starting at noon), walked back through the neighborhood to gastown for a bite to eat and back to the venue to stand in line again, before taking a cab back to the hotel after the concert.
I want to state fairly clearly that there was not one time I felt scared or fearful (although I would not walk back to the hotel in the evening because I am not foolish) and the only time I was asked for money was after leaving the venue after the concert. As we walked down the blocks at 9 a.m on a Saturday morning, we were greeted with “Good morning Ladies” and comments that our coffee cups were pink. When our way was blocked and I said “excuse me” people moved out of the way politely. There was nothing unpleasant about that walk except for being confronted with the fact that poverty exists and people (human beings) live in horrific conditions day in and day out.
As we stood in line for 6 hours to see a concert, there was an need on an occasion to use a restroom. The coffee shop sometimes let you and sometimes said that it was just for customers so my friend and I started using the community center on the corner which was truly more of a homeless center. Again, I was greeted, offered water and shown the restroom. My friend found blood in one of the restrooms so we climbed the stairs to use one on the other floor. There were food being served, there were disposable containers for needles, there were signs telling people where to go if they were overdosing. People were being afforded respect and dignity. I was impressed.
Here are some statistics from “Addressing Homelessness in Metro Vancouver” a white paper published in February 2017.
An estimated 80% of homeless people suffer a chronic health issue (45% suffer two or more health conditions concurrently)15 b. 44% of sheltered and 55% of unsheltered homeless have an addiction (2014)16 c. 33% of sheltered and 36% of unsheltered homeless suffer mental illness (2014)10 d. 30% of sheltered and 27% of unsheltered homeless have a physical disability (2014)1
As we stood in line several neighborhood people talked to us. We actually had sandwiches we did not want to eat, but couldn’t find any person that wanted the sandwiches. Again most neighborhood people were polite, courteous and curious about why so many of us were waiting in line in front of a concert venue 6 hours before the doors opened. I laughed on and off for hours at a woman who said “what are you protesting?” I told my friend that we were the laziest protesters ever - no signs, no marching, no chanting- worst protest ever. At one point a women who appeared to be suffering from withdrawal of some time fell. Other people in line offered her assistance but she could not focus on them enough to accept their help. She was in her own world. After a few minutes when I witnessed her getting her shaking under control and her checking her legs to see if she was hurt, i went up to her. From her perspective I was a big brown blob walking up to her and I startled her. I told her that when she was ready I was willing to help and she desperately reached for my hands. I helped her up and she grasped a tree until she was ready to stand and walk on her own. I offered her food. She did not want it. She never asked for money. Never threatened me.
The next morning I woke up thinking of that episode “Home again” and the point of the episode. I wondered how many of us X-Files fans might have thought back to that episode that night having experienced these and other moments. The point - people are not trash. They are not disposable. They are not to be discarded. I can walk away from that neighborhood and I can avoid the similar downtown areas in Albuquerque, but the people and the problem still exist. From my experience in Albuquerque I know the underlying issues of homelessness - mental health issues, substance abuse, traumatic brain injuries, lack of literacy, lack of job skills, disenfranchisement from society, family and friends having giving up on them. I know that veterans make up a large percentage of our homeless population in America, I know that senior citizen homeless numbers rose drastically in 2008 and subsequent years when retirement savings were loss and, like Vancouver, native people are a higher percentage in the homeless population than in the general population. We can look to our educational systems, our prisons systems, our health care services (especially for the mentally ill), our foster care systems and juvenile care systems and to our economy. The reality is a whole lot of us who go through our lives as hard working, normal citizens are closer to homelessness than we would like to admit. In the past year I had to borrow money from friends and move into a friends home because of unemployment and I actually consider myself a fairly successful human. We are all just humans doing the best we can in our life with what we have. Nothing could remind us more of that than having spent so much time in that area around people who despite their issues were polite and courteous to us.
I know our fan groups are a socially conscious and caring group of people who donate to all kinds of causes - let David Duchovny issue a post asking people to donate to charities on his birthday and beautiful things happen. The proceeds from this concert went to hurricane victim. This is a fan group which organizes volunteer and donation events for charities in honor of Gillian Anderson’s and Scully’s birthday. The holiday season is ahead of us . I am especially asking something of every one who attended that concert and interacted that night with a person who lives on the street in the worst neighborhood of North America. If you fall into this category, than this holiday season in honor of “Home Again” and the X-files they do something in your communities to alleviate the effects of homelessness, reduce the possibility of someone becoming homeless or end some of the underlying causes of homelessness - take blankets or socks to a shelter, donate to a literacy program, call your legislators and demand better services for addiction treatment. Buy subways cards and pass them out whenever you see someone with a sign saying hungry.
At the very least, the next time you are in a situation where you are going to interact with homeless individuals (perhaps because of a David Duchovny concert), please treat people with respect and kindness. People are not trash. They are not disposable. I was reminded of this last Saturday.

Luxembourg, Mexico, Windy City Bulls, Canada, Warriors - McKinnie's Unlikely Journey
Kids want to be like Mike or now Steph, but it’s really Alfonzo McKinnie who probably is their best role model.
“I talk to guys every day younger than me going through things in college and coming from this area and I tell them my story,” the West Sider was saying before the Bulls Monday game with the Golden State Warriors. “They’ve seen it, seen where I started to now. So keep pushing and try to do the right things and somebody will see you and give you a chance. And when you get that chance, you’ve got to take advantage and go from there.”
Yes, it can happen because it’s happening to Alfonzo McKinnie, and it’s as unlikely a sports story as anyone will find.
The kid who played at Curie and Marshall high schools and a bit for Eastern Illinois and Wisconsin-Green Bay, who paid his way to get a tryout for the G-league is now in the playing rotation of one of the great teams in NBA history and perhaps on his way to an NBA championship.
In Monday’s 149-124 Warriors domination of the Bulls that was highlighted by Klay Thompson’s record 14 three point field goals, McKinnie made four of six threes and scored a career high 19 points and a team high 10 rebounds off the bench for the Warriors.
That came just a few hours after the 6-8 energizer pogo stick added his greatest assist in arranging to purchase a house for his mother to finally lead the family out of the West Side North Lawndale neighborhood.
“It’s been a great day,” McKinnie said even before his brilliant game. “Getting the house; she’s ecstatic. It’s all she ever talked about is wanting a house. I’m happy I could do that for her, and then a chance to come here and watch the game.
“It’s been a hell of a journey,” McKinnie acknowledged. “A lot of ups and down from where I started to where I am now. But I am just grateful for the opportunities I was blessed with and I’m trying to make the most of it. It does feel surreal at times. There was a point in time when I didn’t expect anything like this to happen. I wanted it to happen, prayed for it to happen, but at the time it wasn’t looking promising. As the days went on those opportunities came about and I’m here now and just grateful.”
It began with the G-league and the Windy City Bulls, who open their 2018-19 season Friday in the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates. It was through that open tryout of some 200 hopefuls that McKinnie made the roster and a league where some of the great NBA stories begin.
“The G-league meant a lot. It gave me a chance to get in front of some important people and try to get to the next level, which was the NBA. People saw me in the G-league and gave me some chances and I took advantage.”
McKinnie on the importance of playing for the Windy City Bulls in the G-league
It would be difficult to write a movie script of McKinnie’s story and get anyone to believe it.
He came from the tough and dangerous West Side. Consider that when he came back from playing in Luxembourg (lowest level league even there) his family was worried for his safety. That’s right; his mother felt he’d be safer in Mexico.
“There’s a lot of stuff happening in Chicago and a lot of people get caught in the wrong places at the wrong times,” McKinnie explained in a previous interview. “When I told them I was going to go to Mexico, everyone was kind of relieved I wouldn’t have to be in the city for that long.”
McKinnie started at Curie and transferred to Marshall for the basketball program. But it took a while to even get on the team.
“It was the big time basketball school,” said McKinnie. “I’d watch them play and knew all the guys they had. People talked about them so much on the West Side of Chicago. They had the tradition of being rough, gritty defense. You watch Patrick Beverley and how hard he plays. We were pushed hard, practice was conditioning drills, a lot of defensive drills. As a player it helped me because when I got to college I was already a hard worker, not afraid of it.”
But McKinnie suffered a pair of meniscus tears in college and was off the NBA radar. He reluctantly found work in Luxembourg not quite knowing where it was, returned to play in Mexico and then for USA Basketball in their three on three program. It was hardly anyone’s route to the NBA.
But he persevered and worked, went to the Advocate Center for pickup games, signed up for the G-league tryout out of his own pocket. He initially came off the bench in the G-league, began starting and making an impact and made the All-Star team.
“I got it in my head then if I was good enough to be an All Star, maybe I could get to that next level,” said McKinnie.
It led to Summer League and workouts and signing with the Toronto Raptors. It was again mostly back in the G-league with Toronto last season, back to the budget hotels and small paycheck. But then catching the eyes of the Warriors with his hustle and role playing he perfected in the G-league.
“McKinnie's been great,” said Warriors coach Steve Kerr. “He's somebody we had our eye on from the first day of training camp because of his athleticism. He's really gotten a lot better since camp, shooting the ball, getting a feel for the offense, playing well with other guys. He seems to fit the modern NBA game of positionless basketball. He can be out on the floor and guard multiple spots and switch. The guys really like him, too. He's been through quite a bit trying to get to this point and I think our players have a lot of respect for his journey, but also the way he carries himself. He's a professional, hard working kid. He's seen the world and it shows.”
And it shows what a player can do in the G-league and where he can go if he has a belief, confidence, a work ethic and determination never to be stopped by the obstacles.
“Everybody loves the Warriors,” said McKinnie, 26. “I’m excited be a part of it. Just being myself and working hard every day, sticking to what I do and not trying to overdue it. When I get an opportunity produce. It’s a great organization and group of veteran guys, elite players. Being around them is exciting, to be in the gym every day and watch them and take things from them, to play under coach Kerr who was in Chicago and a part of all the championship banners. What a great learning experience.”
Just a great Chicago story. It happened to him. It can happen for you. No matter your profession.

"She sounds like she's dying " You think as panic starts to set in and you have no idea of what's going on Getting to the bedroom door is a struggle in itself since people are coming out of everywhere to see what the hell is going on The door keeps swinging open from the rust on the hinges and because of that someone ends up getting their leg broken in the melee as people were trying to get away from what ever was in there "Its Bad!" "Did she convert?!" "Let me through! I'm a doctor!" All this you hear as you finally get the door shut to keep more people out and then to add to the chaos one of your manticores tries to get through as well, the only thing that stops it from bursting throught the door is that the hallway is narrow so all it can do is stand there roaring at the door Fantastic Of course this is not the most worrying thing, what is worrying you is hearing Naji in there screaming in pain like someone (Who was obviously trying to kill her) was assaulting her with a red hot poker banging on the door shouting at her to stop screaming because you thought she was hurt and needed immediate help As it turned out however that's not what was happening at all! Naji it seems had just finally managed to master her powers like she said she was going to do and as it would happen, she decided to try them out by 'converting' you And, as for all spikes, they cause immense pain when thrust into a non-believer and head-banging wasn't the same as this and she wasn't Crucifer so you didn't think she'd be trying powers like this When she made the door burst open and you saw her, you nearly screamed because your mind thought she had been gutted like a fishery and her entrails were falling out all over for bizarre people is a blog, featuring artists, musicians, designers and other creative weirdos eating in the bistro! Except where otherwise noted, content on this wiki is occurring by the people and for the people But as with all things there are always those who wish to manipulate and take advantage of Others - and sides! ! It's hard to say what the motive is sometimes (and if you ever figure it out, consider yourself on alert) Without reason or logic, a woman (or man) decided to ignite some of her own pubic hair Well congrats for dating a zero! unfortunately non-ow my eyes today my dear!! hilarious!! Let's hope someone picks your story! Of course hair would go up in flames! I mean come on, redheads our prowess on cheap elite jerseys We are not unfamiliar with the alligator, though perhaps a bit larger than normal! Thanks for the contribution to our diet!! Personally I wouldn't want to be rooting through a gator's mouth cavity given the shape their teeth and jaws are in, although I suppose there are far worse things to be stuck in! , Be it eggs, gators, fowl or gator food Thanks odd wad's! It reveals that video is complete and ready to share You have the choice to 'Save' or 'Delete' Upon this revelation, you mull over the possibilities "I should just save it Who knows when I'd have a chance to do something like this again " My sister will be so jealous! stop being complacent with your life This guys cheating on your sister and you have the video proof! But what would i say if I confronted him? The conversation would start with some idle small talk about his recent trip to Miami then turn to the boyfriend, as he hoped (The conversations would be short because he can only speak for so long before he falls asleep) The boy is holding a full pint of liquid cocaine in one hand and a Cuban in the other chris rubs a hand full of wild alligator fillet and cuts it into smaller pieces before tossing it into the skillet The wine and the dark seems to bleed into your vision before turning red You taste metal and feel anger pulsing through you like never before, causing the black to drop away and bright reds, oranges, and yellows flash behind your eyes, even the backs of them ! you sense someone guiding you gently by the hand Through your blurry eyesight you can now make out architecture that is vaguely gothic with a touch of modern, possibly a bit like dublin's castle? drunks lay all around but one of them is on the ground vomiting You recognize the voice as your little sister and accept her help as you stumble towards a bench where she sits beside you , catfish, or the meats on display? recommend jeffery ernesto's new masterpiece for our eyes to enjoy Now let me just take in the full experience of this peice His head throbs and he no longer feels or hears the sound of music, euphoria fades and leaves him with a feeling of awkwardness and nervousness, if only for a second or two It has really set the mood for me breathes a sigh of relief I was hoping to get up the courage to talk to you sooner or later but i was having second doubts that it would be later You are so beautiful and the thought of you not being mine chills me to my core You've waiting for this night just as long as i have why not enjoy it? You quickly reflect on the animal and think about how delicious it is as you chew with an accompanying "Ding!" instead of the normal "Thank you, come again!" to oblivion It really allows one to think Now imagine that, only a few hours before these cute little scaly fellas were playing outside with their siblings and now one has been consumed by the common man Attack on baby gators! Shut it harrison If you weren't me i would slap the sh out of you Hey where is stupid , I do believe he is too busy eating to ask if you've seen this movie or that maybe it's not the healthiest but at least people know what's going on here, in the real world fuggedaboudit Herbal medicine has been used for centuries and yet most people have already forgotten it Nowadays everyone just wants a pill or a shot and sadly they'll get it too, i wouldn't be suprised if one day years from now chemicals would replace all food they want a tablet i saw it on discovery Granted we don't use pills but it still holds true to the concept Time for some good ol' reality tv Let's watch plumbers yarn, bitches! One day the hairs on the back of you hand stand up Everything seems as if in slow motion, like a Matrix movie when everything bursts into code Your skin crawls and small hairs raher than hair cover you whole body like packaging peanuts ? Are they not living? Fish are living too but that fishery was shut down due to poor conditions in which they were kept Crickets egg ovarian juice and chicken testicles would suffice if people actually had to eat those Your stomach growls so you decide to inhale buttermilk pancakes sprinkled with blueberries and smothered with monkey& 039;s orange honey syrup to acquire full stomach Your belly inflates like a character in a bad Disney movie due to purple gator and although its not appealing to the eye it certainly is to the taste buds You rest your full belly and begin to swetocratically wipe your mouth as you pat your thighs You think he's gotten his point across when they fulfill your needs The cliched phrase nobody is perfect is used on yourself or the boogotis reatarding use of sapacities? first Yeah you want to know more about how your watchamacallit works Are you interested in attacking your education or just rest on your laurels and be a good for nothing bum? in the NES game Wild Gunman Current favorites include Garble June, Zaxx, Kink and of course Tron himself Depending on your weapon depends on how little and how big the haul ! These double chambered rings are a common gift from their city of origin, the only problem is that some monsters find them yummy Would you like to take a chance? Hunt alligator from the safety of your own home in the NES game Wild Gunman shelf! Some are better at killing alligators than others, all are fun to try! Early releases of this item feature major glitches hideout! Snrit snrit sninkeratoot tater troot ratata PLUNK Choose a deadly firearm from the shelf! Does it have what it takes to bring down the beast? You will have to try it and see! Today's lucky contestant is ugh it's you Who else would it be? 001. When is their birthday?
December 4th, she’s Sagittarius, known for being assertive, restless and open.
009. Do they believe in happy endings?
She does, in fact, she believes they happen in spite of the fact that she doesn’t really believe in true or even lasting love. She’s seen and experienced a lot of failed marriages and disappointing romances, but she believes happy endings come in other forms.
039. What do they think is the worst thing that can be done to a person?
For Helena, there is nothing she can imagine worse than being trapped or locked up. She would rather die than spend her days locked behind bars.
093. What is your character’s goal in life?
At this point in time, Helena doesn’t have a long term goal. She’s partway through a Bachelor’s degree in business, which she’s not really enjoying. She thought she wanted to be a hero, but the rules of her world have changed since the war and she’s not really sure what that means anymore. For now, her goal is to find a long term goal.
099. Do they talk to inanimate objects?
Yes, a lot. She started doing it when she was a kid because Damian found it annoying and it’s just become a habit and she finds it comforting when she’s alone.

"It's been quite a ride," McCain wrote in his memoir.
Republican Sen. John McCain, 81, has died after a long battle with brain cancer.
The Arizona senator was diagnosed with an aggressive form of glioblastoma and began treatment for the disease in July 2017.
McCain appeared to be undeterred for several months after his diagnosis was made public.
He was seen back at work on Capitol Hill last fall and weighed in on major legislative policies, including the annual defense authorization bill and efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act.
"I don't mean to be repetitious, but to my Democrat friends and some of my Republican friends: I'm coming back," McCain said during a Facebook Live event in August last year.
McCain made headlines upon his return — including when he dramatically voted no on the Republican version of a bill to repeal the Affordable Care Act.
His career as a public servant spanned decades of honorable service, and despite some challenges along the way, McCain established himself as a key figurehead of the Republican Party. Few lawmakers on Capitol Hill will match the legacy he leaves behind.
Here's a look back at John McCain's incredible life:
McCain graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1958 and served as a pilot.
Early in his career in naval aviation, McCain's flying ability and judgment were questioned after he crashed three planes. His commanders were said to have sarcastically called him "Ace McCain" because of his record.
"John was what you called a push-the-envelope guy," Sam Hawkins, who flew in McCain's squadron in the 1960s, told the Los Angeles Times. "There are some naval aviators who are on the cautious side. They don't get out on the edges, but the edges are where you get the maximum out of yourself and out of your plane. That's where John operated."
On October 26, 1967, during the Vietnam War, McCain was flying over Hanoi when a surface-to-air missile hit his plane's wing, forcing him to eject.
"Some North Vietnamese swam out and pulled me to the side of the lake and immediately started stripping me, which is their standard procedure," McCain wrote in USA Today.
"Of course, this being in the center of town, a huge crowd of people gathered, and they were all hollering and screaming and cursing and spitting and kicking at me."
McCain broke both of his arms and his right knee. He had lost consciousness until he hit the water after ejecting from the plane.
McCain was held as a prisoner of the North Vietnamese Army (NVA) for five and a half years. He was subjected to torture and solitary confinement in a Vietnamese prison nicknamed the "Hanoi Hilton."
Upon learning that McCain's father was an admiral in the Navy, who would eventually command all US forces in the Pacific, NVA forces provided medical care to McCain. Doctors performed surgery on his leg, according to McCain, but made incorrect incisions on one side and cut all the ligaments.
McCain would spend the rest of his life walking with a noticeable limp.
McCain was released on March 14, 1973.
The North Vietnamese Army had previously offered McCain his freedom, but he refused, thinking that it would bring shame and demoralize his fellow POWs.
Carol, McCain's first wife, raised three children while he was gone, and was reportedly recovering from a devastating car crash that left her impaired for months.
McCain made several trips back to Vietnam to bridge relations with the US.
McCain would eventually retire from the Navy in 1981 as a captain. His awards include a Silver Star and a Distinguished Flying Cross.
"I have watched men suffer the anguish of imprisonment, defy appalling human cruelty ... break for a moment, then recover inhuman strength to defy their enemies once more," McCain said to the Naval Academy's graduating class in 1993. "All these things and more, I have seen. And so will you. My time is slipping by. Yours is fast approaching. You will know where your duty lies. You will know."

After serving as a Navy liaison in the Senate, McCain took the leap into politics and was elected to serve Arizona's 1st Congressional District from 1982 to 1984.
McCain's political opponents criticized him early on, pointing to what they called his lack of connection to Arizona. He eventually hit back during a debate:
"Listen, pal. I spent 22 years in the Navy. My grandfather was in the Navy. We in the military service tend to move a lot. We have to live in all parts of the country, all parts of the world. I wish I could have had the luxury, like you, of growing up and living and spending my entire life in a nice place like the first district of Arizona, but I was doing other things. As a matter of fact, when I think about it now, the place I lived longest in my life was Hanoi."
"Looking back, I think the race was effectively over right then," McCain recalled in his autobiography. "But I didn't know that then. I was just mad and had taken a swing."

After his two terms in the House, McCain sought Arizona's Senate seat and won a landslide victory in 1986.
As a senator, McCain was a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee. He would eventually become the chairman of the committee, weighing in on a variety of matters involving the US military, such as funding and mission scope.

Sen. McCain hit a bump in the road in 1989.
McCain was one of the "Keating Five" — five senators accused of trying to persuade federal regulators to ease up on Charles Keating, a major campaign donor who became financially compromised during the 1980s savings-and-loan crisis.
McCain, who emerged relatively unscathed after the Senate Ethics Committee's investigation, was found to have exercised "poor judgment." While the other four senators retired in the 1990s, McCain soldiered on.
"Despite my recovery, the Keating Five experience was not one that I have walked away from as easily as I have other bad times," McCain said in his memoir.
"Twelve years after its conclusion, I still wince thinking about it and find that if I do not repress the memory, its recollection still provokes a vague but real feeling that I had lost something very important, something that was sacrificed in the pursuit of gratifying ambitions, my own and others."
Following the scandal, McCain soon earned the moniker of "Maverick," a term his colleagues from both sides of the political aisle gave him as he advocated for campaign finance reform and sought to end government waste.
In the 1990s, McCain took on special-interest groups like the tobacco industry, and pushed for raising cigarette taxes to pay for anti-smoking campaigns. But McCain's anti-tobacco bill ultimately fell short after the tobacco industry launched a $40 million PR effort of its own.
"The losers are the children of America," McCain said.
Regardless of the outcome for some of his ambitious reforms, McCain's was easily reelected in 1992 and 1998.

McCain would soon became a household name in politics. He set his sights higher and announced in 1999 that he would run for president in the 2000 election.
After losing several states in the primaries to then-Texas Gov. George W. Bush, McCain withdrew from the race and endorsed Bush.
One of McCain's crowning achievements in the Senate was the McCain-Feingold Act in 2002.
McCain, along with Democratic Sen. Russell Feingold of Winsonsin, helped enact the Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act of 2002, one of the first major amendments to the Federal Election Campaign Act.
The legislation was designed to regulate financing for political organizations and curb the influx of soft money.
Following the attacks of September 11, 2001, McCain supported the US-led coalition war in Afghanistan.
McCain explained his support for Operation Enduring Freedom in a Wall Street Journal opinion column published in October 2001.
"There is no avoiding the war we are in today, any more than we could have avoided world war after our fleet was bombed at Pearl Harbor," McCain wrote. "America is under attack by a depraved, malevolent force that opposes our every interest and hates every value we hold dear."
"War is a miserable business. Let's get on with it."
McCain also supported the invasion of Iraq in 2003 and claimed Saddam Hussein was "turning Iraq into a weapons assembly line for al-Qaida's network."
Although McCain continued to voice his support for US military options in Iraq, McCain later admitted it was a mistake.
"The principal reason for invading Iraq, that Saddam had [weapons of mass destruction], was wrong," McCain wrote in his memoir.
"The war, with its cost in lives and treasure and security, can't be judged as anything other than a mistake, a very serious one, and I have to accept my share of the blame for it."

McCain announced his second presidential bid for the 2008 election.
McCain gracefully spars with then-Sen. Barack Obama.
McCain secured the Republican nomination in the primaries and faced off against then-Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois in the general election.
As McCain trailed behind polls, Obama's critics sought to discredit him by promoting false theories about his heritage and religion. During a campaign rally in 2008, one of McCain's supporters explained why she said she did not trust Obama.
"I have read about him, and he's not, he's not — he's an Arab," the woman said, incorrectly.
McCain quickly grabbed the microphone, shook his head and set the record straight.
"No ma'am," McCain said, calling Obama "a decent family man, citizen, that I just happen to have disagreements with on fundamental issues, and that's what this campaign is all about."
McCain selects Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska as his running mate.
McCain later said he regretted the decision and wished he selected Joe Lieberman, the former Democratic senator from Connecticut, and his longtime friend, as his running mate.
"It was sound advice that I could reason for myself," McCain said in his memoir. "But my gut told me to ignore it and I wish I had."
McCain concedes to Obama in November 2008: "This is an historic election, and I recognize the special significance it has for African-Americans and for the special pride that must be theirs tonight."
On November 5, 2008, McCain formally conceded the election and congratulated President-elect Obama on his victory.
"A little while ago, I had the honor of calling Senator Barack Obama to congratulate him," McCain said. "To congratulate him on being elected the next president of the country that we both love."
"This is an historic election, and I recognize the special significance it has for African-Americans and for the special pride that must be theirs tonight," McCain added.
"I've always believed that America offers opportunities to all who have the industry and will to seize it. Senator Obama believes that, too."
As the chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, McCain provided legislative oversight of the military and became a leading voice on veterans issues.
But as the chairman of the legislative body of military affairs, McCain also had to account for the military's failures.
For the most part, McCain maintained friendly ties with other lawmakers, regardless of their political party.
In July 2017, McCain announced he was diagnosed with brain cancer.
McCain received broad support for his recovery from both sides of the political aisle.
"I greatly appreciate the outpouring of support - unfortunately for my sparring partners in Congress, I'll be back soon, so stand-by!" McCain said on Twitter.
McCain feuded with President Donald Trump.
Prior to making a move to politics, real-estate tycoon Donald Trump threw jabs at McCain by throwing cold water on his military service.
Trump said the former naval aviator "was captured," and expressed doubt on whether he should be hailed as a hero.
"He's not a war hero," Trump said at a leadership summit in 2015. "He was a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren't captured."
"I think John McCain's done very little for the veterans," Trump later said. "I'm very disappointed in John McCain."
Trump would continue to echo the remarks throughout his presidency.
McCain remained critical of Trump's presidency and did not shy from letting his feelings known. On Trump's controversial performance at his summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin in July, McCain described it as "one of the most disgraceful performances by an American president in memory."
McCain also denounced Trump's repeated attacks on the press: "Trump continues his unrelenting attacks on the integrity of American journalists and news outlets," McCain wrote in an op-ed. "This has provided cover for repressive regimes to follow suit."
The decisive healthcare vote.
A few weeks after being diagnosed with brain cancer, McCain returned to the Senate floor and cast his stunning "no" vote and scuttled Sen. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's healthcare bill on a 51-49 vote.
"Watch the show," McCain said to reporters as he walked into the chamber before the vote.
The Republican-led "skinny repeal" would have repealed major portions of President Barack Obama's healthcare reform law, and McCain's vote was crucial in derailing that effort.
McCain's vote has been a source of ire from Trump, who frequently disparages McCain's decision in his numerous campaign rallies.
McCain also had a gruff, but affectionate relationship with journalists.
McCain discontinues his brain cancer treatment.
On August 24, McCain announced he would discontinue his cancer treatment.
"In the year since, John has surpassed expectations for his survival," McCain's family said in a statement. "But the progress of disease and the inexorable advance of age render their verdict. With his usual strength of will, he has now chosen to discontinue medical treatment."
In a passage from his memoir, which was published in May, McCain writes:
"I don't know how much longer I'll be here. Maybe I'll have another five years. Maybe, with the advances in oncology, they'll find new treatments for my cancer that will extend my life. Maybe I'll be gone before you read this. My predicament is, well, rather unpredictable."
"I have some things I'd like to take care of first, some work that needs finishing, and some people I need to see. And I want to talk to my fellow Americans a little more if I may."
"It's been quite a ride."
"It's been quite a ride," McCain continued in his memoir. "I made a small place for myself in the story of America and the history of my times."
