I knew I needed to go to this as soon as I heard that Shadows Fall, who had regrouped in 2021 after an indefinite hiatus that lasted seven years and saw drummer Jason Bittner join Flotsam and Jetsam and eventually Overkill, and lead guitar GOD Jonathan Donais join Anthrax, intended on performing their 2004 CLASSIC, The War Within in its entirety. That was fucking huge news! But for those of you who might be clueless, let’s discuss why! The Importance of The War Within The War Within, the band’s fourth album and third with vocalist Brian Fair, is the most important album in the band’s entire catalog. It was released on the heels of their previous album, 2002’s The Art of Balance, which went on to sell over 100,000 copies in a time when album sales were steadily declining. You bet your ass I was one of those 100,000 people who actually bought the fucking record! I even saw Shadows Fall live for the first time a year later during an Ozzfest off-date. Having come from the New Wave of American Heavy Metal scene that was largely based in the Northeast and spawned bands such as Aftershock and Overcast – those two bands being the roots of Shadows Fall and especially Killswitch Engage – alongside All That Remains (Phil Labonte was actually the vocalist on Shadows Fall’s 1997 debut, Somber Eyes to The Sky), God Forbid (more on that band later!), Mastodon and Lamb of God, the sound was largely a mix of Hardcore breakdowns and Metallic intensity. Unfortunately, this became Metalcore. But Shadows Fall were different. Via Brain Fair’s roots in Overcast, especially after he joined Shadows Fall for their second album, 2000’s Of One Blood, the hardcore influence could be heard. But thanks to those riffs that scream Iron Maiden AND Morbid Angel, along with Jon Donais’ Randy Rhoads meets Zakk Wylde lead guitar style, they were far more Metal than Hardcore. By the time The War Within was released, the press at large had been calling them the next Metallica for two years, thanks to The Art of Balance. With TWW, the guitars were even stronger than on the last album, the drums were harder hitting, the production was clearer, and the song writing was even stronger. The album had debuted at #28 on the Billboard charts. I was a first day buyer, taking to bus to Sam Goody right after I finished with class for the day. It’d earned them sales of almost 400,000 copies – a FIRST for Century Media Records! – their first main stage slot on the next year’s Ozzfest (the last time I saw them live), and eventually, a major label deal with Atlantic Records. I still remember driving from Staten Island to Starland Ballroom to see Mastodon in May of 2005. I was on Rt 9, driving over the water, WSOU (more on them momentarily) on the radio, when the DJ announced that The War Within had sold 200,000 copies. The was incredible to hear; it meant a lot to the fans, I’m sure, and it meant a lot to the underground Metal scene, especially with Lamb of God releasing their major label debut nine months prior, and Mastodon very close to signing their own major label deal. The Show The show, I’m pretty sure was organized by WSOU, the top college station in terms of playing underground Heavy Metal for DECADES. My first exposure to WSOU in the early months of 1997 happened by mistake. I was looking for another station when I came across this one station that happened to be blasting Death Metal, the likes of which my 7th grade, dumbass self had never heard before and I’d assumed that this had to be the station. It wasn’t, but I clearly still listened up until they were forced to change their format right at the beginning of 2002. They eventually were able to revert back to their prior format; but they had to fight hard to make it happen. It’s been my first show at Starland since I saw Zakk Sabbath in 2017. And before that, the last time I’d been there was most likely the 2008 Summer Slaughter tour, with such a shitty lineup that I totally forgot that it was the last time I saw The Black Dahlia Murder! But I spent a good thre...

VIVIANKRIST “Cross Modulation: Bootleg Remixes” out April 24th
It was only a matter of time before we welcomed Viviankrist into the Ritual Productions family. This year saw her host an incredible performance at Woodland Gathering, including a live collaboration with labelmates 11PARANOIAS, and she was no stranger to sharing stages with Ramesses in her previous incarnation as Gallhammer’s bassist/vocalist Vivian Slaughter.
Before departing Gallhammer in 2010, Eri Isaka Fuzz-Kristiansen (Viviankrist), released three full-length albums (Peaceville Records) and extensively toured Europe with the band. Post-departure marked a shift in pace with Eri moving to Oslo, Norway and taking a musical hiatus...until Summer 2017, when Viviankrist came into being.
With Viviankrist, Eri has delved deep into her love for analog synths and improvised music, switching effortlessly between cinematic, hypnotic and affecting grooves and Cross Modulation - Bootleg Remixes is an extension, a modification and a transformation of her debut LP.

On Playing Modern Metal
So this has been a long time coming and I’ll have to split it up into 2 bits. This is more of a mission statement and demonstration of the techniques, then the practicum, benefits and drawbacks, and the why. Enjoy!
In modern heavy music, blast beats have become a ubiquitous, aggressive backdrop for most if not all modern groups. There are many different types and applications of blast beats; they’re normally preformed by orchestrating variants of single stroke rolls or by playing all limbs together creating a wall of frantic sound.
This is all well and good, until we begin to see the borderline ridiculous tempo marks that modern projects are asking drummers to play such patterns at. Naturally there are many causes for this, including the tendency for bands to gain widespread notoriety by playing faster and more intricately than anyone else, see the success of Animals as Leaders and most Deathcore bands. The full discussion of such trends however can wait until a later date. The effects of these trends however, are very noticeable indeed. To my humble ears, in terms of the actual music, we actively cultivate an environment in which the need for greater technical ability surpasses a need for musicality, and we are left with the sum total of the Metal equivalent of, if you’ll excuse my use of the term, Berkleefunk.
What that means for the technique of the modern drummer is: the higher the tempos get, the more of your practice time you have to devote to achieving these patterns at high speeds, and the more time is diverted away from being a more well rounded musician. Naturally there exceptions, but sit most Metal drummers down in front of an orchestral snare drum etude and they will invariably fall on their face by the end of the second line (and that’s being generous). Sit most Metal drummers in front of a big band chart and they’ll give you a look that says, “how the hell am I supposed to read this?” or worse yet “I have no idea how to read sheet music or charts.” I actually had a hardcore drummer in the studio that hit me with that exact line. Nobody’s perfect in this way and Lord knows I stand accused. In fact, I was like that myself for many years. Allow me to clarify this by saying you don't need to be able to read sheet music, or even know advanced chord scale based music theory to be great, but I’ve never once met a drummer or any musician for that matter from any genera that’s seriously said “gee, I really wish I knew less theory” or “gee, I wish I couldn’t read music.” (Granted I’ve met very few people who will seriously use the term “gee” in conversation but that’s beside the point). In fact, in the vast majority of cases the correlation goes the other way, and (especially with reading) the more one practices it, the better one becomes.
Lets be honest here, as a Metal musician you aren’t going to be making music on most people’s “easy listening” playlist and, because the metal industry has been rather gentrified and watered down to a very few first call musicians in recent years, it’s practically a silver bullet if you can make a living out of playing exclusively metal. If you want to make a living out of music, and music alone, you need to be able to play everything, and play it well. The name of the game is to be a chameleon. This includes Metal, and almost every genera and subgenera ever put to paper. As much as it pains me to say it, you’ve got to be ready for that call from Jason Aldean, as much as you’ve got to be ready for that call from Dave Mustane, 2Cellos, or Chick Corea.
For this to happen, you’ll need to practice an awful lot. Sorry in advance. This means that the higher Metal tempos get, the more time you have to devote to playing Metal and thus the rest of your broader musical development is in effect stunted. It happened to me so it can definitely happen to anyone reading this. Make no bones about it; it takes real dedication and stamina that not everyone has to play Metal at a professional level. In order to develop those qualities you need to devote time to it as with anything. The harsh reality is there are only 24 hours in a day and at least 8 of those you need to spend sleeping.
So what do we do about this? We can't put the cat back in the bag and only write music playable by everyone. Either we take the conventional route and plan a structured practice regimen that works about as well as a new years resolution to go to the gym, or we find a more ergonomically sound way to play at high tempos that doesn’t involve hammering out singe strokes for weeks on end for the payoff to be a rise of a meager 10 BPM. Sure there are lots of weeks you could spend doing this but discouragement aside, time is money and you have to say yes to that call.
I wrestled with this when I was developing my double bass technique, and talking to other musicians both at Berklee and online. After watching extreme bands, researching, and playing in equal measure, and getting a new one ripped for me by Buddy Rich’s lead trumpet player of 15 years on and off, I found a solution that worked and one I want to pass on to drummers who turn their ambitions to heavy Metal. Namely, a rudimental approach to blasting.
Origins:
Rudiments are like scales. You say that magic word and students run faster than you thought possible. Rudiments all for the most part sport some kind of quirky onomatopoeic name and seem to have some kind of mystery around them. At the end of the day though, they are amalgamations of single strokes, double strokes, and flams. That’s it. No one likes them because they’re normally practiced on a pad, to a metronome, and you only do it if you’re in marching band or when someone is checking you know them. Simply put it’s boring. Very little emphasis is put on actually applying the damn things in interesting ways around the kit. But as soon as you, do you come up with very interesting fills and grooves. Metal however tends to favor speed over substance, and by extension it loves single strokes like dogs love peanut butter. However in recent times, people have begin to change the genera by adding more influences to their diet and thus rudiments have made a tentative comeback, both in grooves and in blasting wherein lies our concept.
The first person I ever saw execute something along these lines was one Dirk Verburen formerly of the band Soilworks, who as I write this plays for Megadeth on tour. Figure one is the so called “dirk blast” that involves a rudiment known as the flam accent to play a triple feel hammer blast*
Fig 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZjeY4RG6b3A
This concept will be revisited later but a few years down the line I attended Summer Slaughter 2017 and one Aaron Stechauner was playing with Rings of Saturn a noted extreme deathcore band. He employed a similar concept exempt in a duple feel with a flamadiddle (a.k.a flam paradiddle)
Fig 2. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H24UAPsPW6w
As you see in the song, he uses this idea more as a chop rather than to carry out a whole section’s worth of blasting. Later on he reverts back to a traditional blast. The only place where he uses it the way I saw the opportunity to is around the 3 minute mark where there’s a melodic section that warranted a blast and uses it over any other kind of blast to conserve energy.
I thought about it and I saw how I could use it in conjunction with the Dirk Blast to create really interesting patterns that take borderline no effort to play, make audio engineers hate blasting (especially at high tempos) a little less.

The Saw's Favorite Songs of 2017
It’s that time of year again, where we count down our favorite things of the year while welcoming in the new year! I will be counting down my top 10 favorite songs that I have been listening to all year long. 2017 was a great year for metal, a lot of bangers and heavy hitters were released this year. Did any of your favorites make the list?
IMPORTANT!!!! I play these songs, along with many others, during my set on WKNC!! Come head bang with ya girl on Friday nights from 10pm-midnight! To listen online, go to WKNC’s website and click on “MP3” in the “High Quality” section. Don’t be lame, come hang out with The Saw!
10. Attila – Three 6
I’m back at it with my Attila jams. Okay, so this song came out on Halloween and I was ~~~SHOOK~~~ Attila is that band where party metal is acceptable. I honestly feel like I need to go to a rave or something after seeing them. This song goes back to their “heavy s***” as Fronz likes to put it, and I agree with him. This song is more of a banger because the anthem is so catchy. “If you’re down with the devil say hell yeah, I’m burning down your church like 666.” It reminds me of their song Party With The Devil and I’m vibing with it. The riffs are super chunky and that is a 10/10 in my book. Ever since I heard this song I instantly considered it a bop. Say what you want about Attila, they put out some really catchy music.
They seriously need to tour with BROJOB. I would love to see that, it would be super weird but very entertaining.
9. Make Them Suffer – Vortex (Interdimensional Spiral Hindering Inexplicable Euphoria)
This song is off Make Them Suffer’s newest record, Worlds Apart, and this is my favorite song off that record. It has that metalcore aspect that I like with the clean vocals but with riffs that still make it heavy. You just want to mosh it up and jump around when this song kicks in. The singer also throws in some “BLEIGH” that we all know I go insane for. Honestly how can you not get hyped when they start randomly growling weird things in the mic. Is it just me? Okay, moving on. The vocals are really great, you can hear the highs and lows, along with the harmonizing with the keyboardist. They incorporated a lot of different aspects in this song and they pulled it off. It is such a bop. I love it so much.
8. Code Orange – Forever
Code Orange snuck up on me this year. I’m really digging this band recently. I didn’t get to see them when they came through North Carolina… stupid finals. BUT this song is a banger, the opening riff just makes you want to bang your head. If this song was on a “try not to headbang” challenge… yeah, I would lose immediately. Jesus Christ the riffs in this song are just great, I listen to it almost every day because I love how chunky this song is. Their new record is such a bop 10/10 would check it out if I was you.
7. Volumes – Finite
Now this song is kinda mellow for me, but hey, it’s a bop. It is like my party song because I sing it when I’m in the shower. It's so groovy and I do some really weird dance moves when I play it. Honestly, Finite is just so catchy and the guitars really make it a bop. I feel like this song would be in some YouTube sorority recruitment video because it just makes me want to run around with my girlfriends and awkwardly smile and do hand symbols at the camera. But that wouldn’t happen because 1) I am not in a sorority and 2) they wouldn’t play this song in one of their videos.
6. Wage War – Stitch
You know I gotta put my boys in Wage War in here! This is the first song I heard off their new record “Deadweight” and if you’re sleeping on this band, you are definitely missing out. This band is going to be BIG; just wait. So again, going along with my theme of literally every song that made this list, the riffs are great. Briton’s voice is amazing and his deep growl that he does on the end makes me want to throw chairs around and mosh. You just want to bounce and headbang when this song comes on. They are literally one of the best metalcore bands that I have ever seen and heard. This entire song is so catchy and really shows how they are developing their sound.
5. Arch Enemy – First Day in Hell
This is literally one of my favorite Arch Enemy songs of all time. Alissa’s voice in this song is really powerful and I love the eerie vibe that I get from the beginning. The reason I like this song so much is because of the chorus and how there is a breakdown after it. It’s a banger and will literally make anyone bang their head. Like I said before, if this song was on a “try not to headbang” challenge, I would totally lose. The guitars’ harmony is really beautiful and really make this song complete.
4. FRCTRD – Negative
This is one of my favorite songs of all time. FRCTRD is a new deathcore band from France and I am so happy that I discovered them. The guitars are really chunky in this song have some type of electronic sound in the background and it sounds so cool. The singers voice is very thick and his pig squeals are a major key. He can pig squeal and then transition to deep growls flawlessly. Now what makes this song so great is the ending. The breakdown at the end has me ~~~SHOOK~~~ it is an offbeat sound with chunky riffs that just make you want to go into total mosh mode. This band is something else, I love them.
3. Thy Art Is Murder – Puppet Master
This song is such a heavy hitter - oh my god. CJ’s voice is incredible and I can always tell when Thy Art is on because he has such a strong, distinctive voice. The drumming technique is amazing and really brings this song together. How this guy drums is awesome, I don’t know how he sits there with a straight face and pounds away. This song has a bouncy vibe to it that you can’t help but jump to. And when the breakdown hits, oh boy, its’s great. I can’t help but start jamming out when the breakdown hits. Puppet Master really sets the vibe of how their whole record goes.
2. Miss May I – Swallow Your Teeth
Obviously, I had to put one of my top favorite bands on this list. This song is a complete anthem and makes me want to bounce. The riff that starts in the first few seconds of the song reminds me of “Hero With No Name.” This is a sing along song that I really enjoy. The chorus is very catchy and has great harmony from Levi and Ryan. Speaking of Ryan, when he sings his clean vocals before the breakdown hits, oh my lord, it is beautiful. Then Levi comes in with an “OHHH” and BAM breakdown begins. I absolutely love it. The song basically talks about the fact that you shouldn’t put up with anyone’s crap and that people just need to learn when to shut up sometimes. It has a mainstream vibe to it that I can see being played on the radio (minus the cussing), but all in all, it's a banger and you should check it out.
Dying Fetus – Fixated on Devastation
If you listen to my DJ sets on Friday nights, then this song shouldn’t be a surprise (and if you don’t listen to my set, what’s up man? You’re really missing out). This song starts off like a typical death metal song but then it gets groovy. AND I LOVE THE GROOVE TO THIS SONG!! I do some weird dance move with my hands that I can’t really describe but it’s great. They played this live when I saw them at Summer Slaughter and I automatically fell in love with it. If you could dance to death metal, this would be the song. It has components of death metal that are very traditional but then they start jamming with a groovy breakdown that I have never heard another band do. Around the last few minutes of the song, they start to groove again and bring in a slow breakdown that just makes me lose my mind. When the groove starts with the guitars, and the deep growls, it is impossible to stay still. This song is an automatic bop. If you are trying to get into Dying Fetus start off with this jam, you won’t regret it.
