World Magician Day is celebrated on January 31st.
A magician is an artist who captures the imagination of his audience, often resulting in looks of astonishment and admiration.
The origin of World Magician's Day is the desire to pay homage to Saint John Bosco, the patron saint of magicians, who died on January 31, 1888 and canonized in 1934 by Pope Pius XI, in Italy.
On this international day to celebrate magicians, various activities take place around the world, with emphasis on magic shows and the teaching of some magic tricks to children in schools.
Phrases for World Magician Day
What the eyes see and the ears hear, the mind believes. (Harry Houdini)
My mind is the key that sets me free. (Harry Houdini)

Happy Birthday to the late Fred Saberhagen.  Fred Saberhagen wrote a vampire book series that I consider to be woefully underrated, and frankly, better than The Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice. The Dracula Tape (Warner June 1975/Ace January 1980)
The Holmes-Dracula File (Ace November 1978) Allegedly this was not Saberhagen's choice of title, as it gives away what was intended to be a surprise plot point. An Old Friend of the Family (Ace June 1979) Thorn (Ace September 1980; text restored and/or revised: Tor February 1990) Dominion (Tor June 1982) "From the Tree of Time" (short story), in: Sorcerer's Apprentice #14 1982 A Matter of Taste (Tor July 1990) A Question of Time (Tor May 1992) Seance for a Vampire (Tor June 1994); republished as The Further Adventures of Sherlock Holmes: Seance for a Vampire (Titan Books, June 2010) A Sharpness on the Neck (Tor October 1996) "Box Number Fifty" (short story), in: Dracula in London, ed. P. N. Elrod (Ace November 2001) A Coldness In the Blood (Tor October 2002) And you can get his vampire short story collection "Saberhagen Vampire tales" on Amazon.   I wrote the introduction for that. _____________   I highly recommend this book series.  The books are often out of print and hard to find so your best bet might be downloading the audible versions.   The first book "The Dracula tape" retells Dracula from Dracula's point of view.   The one called "An Old Friend of the Family" is like the story in Taken if Dracula was in Liam Neeson's role.   The only two books in the series I don't care much for are Dominion and A Question of time but you can skip those without it effecting much.

All the arthurian movies I watched from best to worst (imho)
Regarding my opinions and my taste: I am okay with low budget, bad special effects and even bad/weird acting, I prefer enjoyment over any kind of historical accuracy. I also enjoy cheesy movies, and I prefer characters over plot, and plot over the rest (pace, acting etc.).I tend to prefer movies that uses characters with a reason (ex. using Morgause as Arthur's sister versus using a random guy and calling him Gaheris just because it's an arthurian sounding name). I am also a bit Mordred fan.
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Camelot (musical, 1982 or the Vanessa Redgrave version) - this musical is one of my favorite musicals and one of my favorite arthurian adaptations. It makes Arthur a true protagonist and really put a lot of effort into showing how complex and important his dream is (also I love movies where a character has to renounce to something to protect an ideal)
Excalibur Kid (1999) - best trashy Connecticut Yankee movie, with Morgause as Arthur's sister and focusing on the protagonist convincing Arthur to be a king
Sir Gawain and the Green Knight (cartoon) - the best adaptation of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight
Sire Gauvain et le Chevalier Vert (French short) - the best non animated Gawain story at the moment
The Sword in the Stone
Sword of Lancelot (1963) - a classic Lancelot and Guinevere story, but probably because of the hawk-bearing Mordred and his plotting I really enjoyed it
A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court (1988) - a great adaptation of the book with a girl as the protagonist. It has nothing too different from usual, but the protagonist is great and Guinevere has a much bigger role than usual
Morte d'Arthur (1984) - a movie of just scenes and an external narrator, but it is so well done and some of the scene (Mordred's betrayal!) are amazing
Excalibur (1981)
Merlin and Arthur the Lion King - a cartoon, so expects it to be very kids-friendly, but it still manages to be fun and also one of the two movies with a Mordred redemption
Dragons of Camelot - extra trashy, but has a very thigh pace and gives a lot of depth to the characters, mostly Guinevere, Morgana, Lancelot and Galahad. It's so bad that it's good.
Merlin and the Sword - an extra trashy movie, but there are so many plot points (Nimue and Merlin, Ragnelle and Gawain, Lancelot and Guinevere, Morgana) that it ends up being entertaining
King Arthur: Legend of the Sword - pretty fun, a lot of strange humorous pacing, but using Kay as a random name, and not enough arthurian elements, it was clearly made to be the first of a series and kept a lot of elements for the future that never happened
A Knight in Camelot - another good Connecticut Yankee adaptation, with an interesting twist at the end
Arthur and Merlin (2015) - historical based, very nice visuals but Arthur and Merlin are the only real characters in the movie (and the only arthurian characters) and it seems more like it is setting the scene for a bright future that never comes, also very slow
New adventures of a Connecticut Yankee - this is so low because it's in Russian and I don't know Russian, but the visuals are AMAZING
The Knights of the Round Table (1953)
King Arthur: Knights of the Round Table (2017) - not really arthurian characters just strange reincarnations, a lot of absurd plot points, but pretty fun and one of the two movies in existence to have a Mordred redemption. Also, aliens. Far too long.
Percival 2007 - it was in Portoguese so I could understand little, but it looked very dramatic?
Quest for Camelot - the cartoon! Probably this is my nostalgia bias
King Arthur - good actors, not boring, but also nothing special and mostly focused on Lancelot and Arthur
Merlin and the Book of Beasts - classic 'Arthur's daughter has to reclaim the kingdom', but it glossed over the whole Mordred thing.
Arthur's Quest - a classic modern reincarnated Arthur fighting Morgana
A young connecticut yankee in King Arthur's court - a bad movie but so so fun. It also has evil Galahad and an amazing Morgana
Prince Valiant -classic Valiant adventure with more Gawain
Prince Valiant (1997) - classic Valiant adventure
Merlin and the War of Dragons - the plot is all over the place, but it manages to put together Igraine and Uther with Merlin's backstory. The only interesting part is the whole Nimue vs Viviane.
Avalon High (2010) - this low for having butchered the novel and ending up with confusing the plot and the whole sense of the novel. Still, definitely fun to watch for the right public.
First Knight - not too bad, but a bit boring and a story already seen. A classic Lancelot/Guinevere.
Guinevere (1994) - this is a mediocre movie about Guinevere and a loose adaptation of Persia Woolley's books.
Merlin the Return - so bad but also weirdly fun, a part for extra sexist Gawain
A kid in King Arthur's Court - my least favorite Connecticut Yankee movie, mostly because I really disliked the protagonist and the pace
King Arthur: Excalibur Rising - very slow pacing, focusing on Owain (here Arthur's son) vs Mordred, but spends little time on the characters themselves and mostly on setting Owain's big sword revelation and stuff
Lancelot du Lac (Lancelot and Guinevere) - I hate this movie. It's the classic Mordred finds out about Guinevere and Lancelot, but all the characters appear pretty boring with the exception of Gawain.
The Spaceman and King Arthur - this is so high in the list because it adds something new to the usual Connecticut Yankee story. But it's bad and pretty sexist.
Camelot The Legend cartoon - they sing and it's very bad
Sword of the Valiant - which is this low for the absurd way the butchered Gawain and the Green Knight
Merlin of the Crystal Cave - mostly focused on child Merlin and his mother
Merlin (1993) - not really an arthurian movie, as it's a modern times reincarnated lady of the lake stopping a prophecy. Nothing too exciting
Un espanol en la corte del rey Artur - a musical
Arthur and Merlin: Knights of Camelot - takes itself too seriously, Merlin is in it just for 10 minutes, focusing on Arthur's self angst, a lot of plot-points that makes little sense
Lancelot: Guardian of Time - this movie is weirdly fun, but the bad outweighs everything else, especially the sexism
The Sorcerer's Apprentice 2010 and 2002 - just bad, I hated both this movies but I preferred the 2020 one.
Pendragon: Sword of his Father - worst movie EVER. This is not an arthurian movie, just Christian propaganda with Arthur in it. It also makes no sense arthurian-wise.
Movies not in the list because they are not out yet:
Kaamelott part 1
Green Knight
Green Knight: The Movie
The Legend of Sir Mordred
Fate Grand/Order the movie
Movies not in the list because I could not find them to watch them or had no time to watch yet:
Red Shoes and the Seven Dwarves (not watched yet)
The Kid who would be King (not watched yet, SORRY)
Kids of the Round Table (I watched it but I remember nothing)
Merlin's Magic 2013 (never found)
Gawain and the Green Knight (1991, to watch soon)
Connemara (not watched yet)
Gawain and the Green Knight (1973) (watched it but so boring that I remember nothing)
Perceval le Gallois (I've watched it too long ago to remember)
Studio One: Connecticut Yankee (I've watched it too long ago to remember)
A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's court (the 1949 a d the 1931 ones)
Lancleot du Lac 1970 (it's pretty, but only in French so I did not watch it)
Camelot cartoon 1999 (I've watched but I remember nothing of it)
A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court (cartoon that I watched but don't remember)
Merlin: The Quest (never found it!)
the 9 movies pre 1921 because I could not find them or were in languages I could not understand

“Whatever.”
FULL NAME: Vanessa Doofenshmirtz BASED ON: Vanessa (Phineas and Ferb) FACE CLAIM: Diana Silvers PRONOUNS: She/Her AGE: June 15, 2002 CURRENT STATUS: Closed
Character Information
Vanessa Doofensmhirtz is many things. She’s a sorceress, but she’s also a scientist. She’s an outcast, but she’s also a leader. She’s the most capable person she knows when she puts her mind to something,  but she also struggles to pay attention in school and commit to one thing for too long. She’s a firecracker blazing across the sky, but she’s also the deep dark night sky with no stars.
But one thing’s certain: If you have a problem with Vanessa Doofensmirtz, she’d prefer if you told her to her face.
Vanessa is used to people having problems with her. On her first day of fourth grade, a kid dumped his lunch on her lamp and she came back to her desk after recess to find the word “Witch” written across her desk in Sharpie. The next day of fourth grade, Vanessa showed up in all black and murmured some gibberish and told Bill Michaels that she’d just cursed him. (Vanessa didn’t know anything beyond basic reagent collection). She got detention for that; Billy got off scot-free.
It  only got worse from there.
See, even though Plains View, Nebraska was a Magick Friendly Town, very few people were actually friendly to Magicks. It didn’t help that it only became a Magick Friendly Town in the last five years, the result of an initiative passed by the U.S. Government that, like many programs, was good in theory but not so much in execution. Vanessa was collateral damage. All the Magicks of Plains View were — but where else in Nebraska could you even go?
But Plains View was Vanessa’s place to be safe. It was her right. When she was 11, she knocked on the door of every sorcerer in town till she found one who would take her as an apprentice. When kids pushed her around in school, she pushed back. She wore black and drew runes over her homework and very quickly, she found that the other Magick kids in school started to cling to her. They were scared. Vanessa wasn’t. Vanessa fought back. Vanessa became their leader.  Vanessa wouldn’t be silenced.
She couldn’t afford not to stand up for herself. No one else was looking out for her. Not her father, who was the one who moved them to Plains View in the first place. Not her mother, who left.
(Maybe she should give her father more credit; he taught her everything she knew about robots and even though he didn’t have magic, he helped her figure out spells and reagents just based on what he’d read. Everything can be done via the scientific method, he told her. Maybe she should give her father more credit; he was the one who stayed).
Vanessa scraped through school — a combination of the odds being stacked against her and her own inability to pay attention when something bored her —  but managed grades good enough to get into Pride University. It wasn’t her first choice, but then again, any choice, any ticket out of Plains View would do.
Vanessa is many things. She’s scrappy, resilient, and ready to make something of herself somewhere where she can be all the many things she wants to be.

Nicolas Cage's career is a bit like his acting style; eccentric, sometimes too laughably over the top, and for the most part, too damn Cage-y to be taken seriously. But, the actor who has just overcome a very shaky last couple of years, amassing a shit-ton of debt and accumulating enough shitty straight-to-dvd releases to fill a film store, is still one of the best actors working today, and his last couple of hits -- since, lets say 'Bad Lieutenant' in 2007 -- 'Mandy' and 'Color Out Of Space' shows in abundance why cinema needs nonconformists like him in order to progress and push the boundaries of acting to new levels. Wether or not you like him, and even though he's been in some truly shocking films, and the fact he will pretty much do any film, this man is as electric as his iconic "Nicolas Cage Freakout" in 'Adaptation' back in 2002, and his substantial film catalogue speaks for itself.
.
Here's every film I've ever watched by Cage, best to worst:
.
• Mandy - Miller Bloom (2018)
.
• Con Air - Cameron Poe (1997)
.
• Joe - Joe (2013)
.
• Face/Off - Castor Troy (1997)

.
• Bad Lieutenant - Terence McDonagh (2009)
.
• Color Out Of Space - Nathan Gardner (2019)
.
• Matchstick Men - Roy (2003)
.
• Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse - Spider-Man Noir (2018)
.
• Leaving Las Vegas - Ben Sanderson (1995)
.
• Raising Arizona - H. I. McDunnough (1987)
.
• Wild At Heart - Sailor Ripley (1990)
.
• The Rock - Stanley Goodspeed (1996)
.
• Lord Of War - Yuri Orlov (2005)
.
• The Croods - Grug (2013)

A friend of mine is running a D&D one-shot this weekend which meant creating another character.  I was sort of grasping at straws (I don’t want to use the tabaxi rogue I’ve got waiting in the wings for if/when my character in the campaign game we’re in dies for a one-shot) but then I was like “wait, what if I just played another character that sort of exists already?
In BA, Alex is an incubus who falls in love with a human woman who is killed by a covetous evil vampire (warning, art at that link is from 2002-2004 and is *real* bad).  When I was writing out Alexus’ backstory to fit the old character into the new world, I was like “phew, let’s be real—this backstory is like 20 years old and it is showing the hell out of its age; this woman was created and immediately fridged explicitly to fuel some manpain” but there wasn’t much point in going into detail since backstory is basically irrelevant in that game so I just was like “yeah she disappeared one day and nobody knew why and he eventually kept traveling but still keeps half an ear to the ground for news.”
Anyway so instead of being a character that exists solely to be fridged, now Mephala gets to exist on her own for a bit!  She, uh... well she’s more of a person now but the covetous evil vampire is still there to some degree  Also since Alex turned into a half-elf, Mephala gets to be the demon(-like creature) instead.  Good trade.
Mephala - level 5 Tiefling Sorcerer (Divine Soul) Str: 8 (-1) Dex: 10 (0) Con: 12 (+1) Int: 14 (+2) Wis: 14  (+2) Cha: 18 (+4)
In the D&D universe, she was apprenticed to a goldsmith(/guild artisan: jeweler, in D&D background terms) who was sort of also a kind of parental figure (cos she didn’t have those for some reason I guess?) when she and Alexus met and became close, but one of the dudes in her town was all Frollo from Hunchback of Notre Dame up in here and was like “yo you’re an evil hellspawn but also I want your body?” and she wasn’t super into him.  At one point he cornered her and she straight up told him to get bent and he got real mad about it (as whiny pissbabies are wont to do) and yo! turns out he was some sort of creature in disguise or something?  I am slightly unclear on that part cos I’m not super familiar with D&D monster lore and stuff but anyway in the encounter he cut the shit out of her shoulders and throat but at some point her innate magic sorcerer powers kicked in (because the player’s handbook tells me this is how sorcerers work) and either massively fucked him up or killed him (again, unclear and at this point irrelevant).  She also kinda fucked up herself at the same time (did he have like, acidic blood or something? did she just fireball herself in the face? I DON’T KNOW, MAN!).
She ended up staggering off into the woods and fleeing her town because the whiny pissbaby dude/monster was like, the D&D sheriff or something (Viktor, the OG covetous vampire dude, was the chief of police in her town in BA) and she was pretty sure she wasn’t gonna be able to get a fair trial or anything there.  She desperately wants to return, but hasn’t quite worked up the nerve yet.  Reason for being an adventurer TBD, but apparently the one-shot is going to be a heist so I guess she’s trying to save up funds to get protection or a better shot at biasing the law in her favour or something? idk man, lol.
Aside from the obvious ones on her face, neck, and torso, Mephala’s got lots of little scars on her fingers from learning her trade, which she is actually pretty good at (I guess she was less an apprentice and more of an established/senior journeyman when The Incident happened, really).  Most of the jewelry and metalwork she wears is her own work, as is the pendant that Alexus still carries around for luck.  She was never super outgoing but is extra wary of strangers nowadays, and makes liberal use of Thaumaturgy’s “change your eyes for a minute” ability (in conjunction with her cloak) when in crowds or unknown situations.  When she does, the right eye typically ends up kind of cataract-clouded; she can still mostly see out of it but it did get damaged somewhat when she took that hit.  She avoids speaking whenever possible because her vocal chords also never quite recovered from that day (aka I don’t want to be the face of this game’s party, I mean what).
Design-wise, I really wanted her horns to be something that wouldn’t interfere too badly with a hood but that isn’t the curled ram-ish horns I used for Delenda; with a big and drapey enough hood, these seem to work for that.  The scarf was important for covering her neck because she doesn’t want to show off the claw/handprint on her neck, but leaving off the left sleeve displays the clawmarks on her shoulder, and basically nothing below the waist got refined at all.  I’d like to keep working on it, but the game is on Sunday and I have a commission in the queue, so I had to stop myself at some point, lol.
Alexus’ pendant is a wire-wrapped fluorite heart; I’m not sure what sort of stone Mephala’s arcane focus is (the smaller teardrops and oval cabochons and such are probably enamel and coloured glass).  I was thinking labradorite cos those can look super sweet and reasonably magical, but I couldn’t find any that were big enough when I went looking through ebay and etsy earlier.
She’s a divine soul sorcerer instead of some other kind of sorcerer largely because I don’t actually know what anybody else in this one-shot is playing (well, I know we have two rogues but) and I wanted to make sure we had at least one healing spell available, lol :x

The Happy Meal global footprint has expanded to more than 38,000 restaurants in more than 100 countries around the globe —with the iconic toy still a beloved staple—serving as a symbol of surprise, playfulness and fun.

My story isn t over yet ring

Step 8: Progress Until You Reach the Three Sisters Area and Reveal Seluvis’s Hidden Cellar She’ll ask you to take her Primal Glintstone to find a new body. Head down into the ruins near the sphere, and speak to Sellen’s true body. There’s no boss in the Witchbane Ruins, but there is a large sphere of sorcerer masks spamming AoE attacks guarding a stairway down. Step 7: Speak to Sellen’s True Body in the Witchbane Ruins In her menu, select “Lusat’s location.” Listen to what she has to say about her body, and she’ll point you to the Witchbane Ruins in the western portion of the Weeping Peninsula south of Limgrave. Go back to the Waypoint Ruins and speak to Sellen. Step 6: Return to Sellen and Tell Her Lusat’s Location Beyond it is a small cavern with Sorcerer Lusat, who gives you the Stars of Ruin Sorcery when you interact with him. Provided you have the Sellian Sealbreaker in your inventory, you can undo the seal. Step 5: Unlock the Sealed Cavern to Find Sorcerer LusatĪt the bottom of the Sellia Hideaway cavern, you’ll see a seal similar to those blocking the way to Raya Lucaria Academy.Īpproach the seal. Odds are that there are messages on the ground pointing to the wall’s location. If you don’t find the fake wall initially, keep hitting the rockface as you move south. Near the southern end of the rocks is an illusory wall. You’ll end up at a seemingly barren rockface. From the Plague Church, go northeast and right at the giant skull. You'll also need to do it if you’re looking to start Millicent’s questline. Next, you’ll need to complete Sellia, Town of Sorcery, and open the seal at its northern end. Step 4: Head to the Sellia Hideaway Dungeon Your task, then, is to find Sorcerer Lusat somewhere in Sellia in eastern Caelid. She’ll eventually ask a favor of you and, at the end of that conversation, provide the Sellian Sealbreaker key item. She’ll give some background on herself and her goals, then ask you to join her on a journey to reclaim her place at Raya Lucaria. Step 3: Listen to Sellen, Join Her Journey, and Take on a FavorĪfter hearing Sellen discuss Azur, select “Tell me your story” in her menu. Once you have the spell, return to Sellen and select "Show Azur’s sorcery" in her menu. Gelmir, then follow our guide to acquiring Comet Azur. Progress through the game until you reach Mt. She’ll ask if you want to become her apprentice, then ask again if you’d be okay joining an exile from Raya Lucaria. Open the door at the back of its arena and speak to Sellen. Head to the Waypoint Ruins in the southeast portion of Western Limgrave and defeat the Mad Pumpkinhead boss. You’ll also be taking on a few optional bosses, but nothing on the level of Godskin Duo, Morgott, or otherwise. You won’t be going to the endgame in Sellen’s questline, but some of the later steps are particularly difficult or annoying at lower levels. How to Complete Sorceress Sellen's Questline in Elden Ring The rewards, however, are more than worth the effort, as you’ll get your hands on some of the best Sorceries and magic-centric equipment in the game. He is furious & cussing both hobbits for having stolen his "precious", The One Ring of Power that Frodo bears.Like many NPCs in Elden Ring, Sellen's questline takes you across the Lands Between but doesn’t require nearly as much investment as Alexander or Corhyn and Goldmask'squests. Here, before Gollum assaults them both as they're sleeping, he crawls down a rocky cliff. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings : The Two Towers scene when Gollum/Smeagol makes his first OFFICIAL appearance to Frodo & Sam and becomes a central character. The phrase “My precious” originates from Peter Jackson’s 2002 film adaption of J.R.R. Photoshop would often be a useful tool to accomplish hilarious memes. Or it can be simply someone else saying "my precious". It would generally be used as a meme with either Gollum/Smeagol declaring something or someone his "precious". "My precious" is a memorable quote from the 2002 highly acclaimed fantasy film The Lord of the Rings : The Two Towers. Lord of the rings, gollum, smeagol, my precious, the one ring of power

“Most teachers don’t intrude upon their student’s sex lives like an over protective hound.”
“Well most teachers aren’t the sorcerer supreme.” ____
Reader’s got a good thing going with Loki, and a great thing going with Stephen. Not like that though, he’s just her master. Her…teacher. And Loki is, well that’s still kinda undefined. But everything is going great. The sex is hot, (with Loki, definitely not with Stephen) and her relationship with Stephen is an amazing chance to become a talented sorcerer. Everything is going exactly as it should, and nothing could possibly go wrong. No three sided love shapes to be found here. Absolutely not.

“"Girl? GIRL?! If it weren’t for this girl, you would still be in the Horned King’s dungeon!“
FULL NAME: Eilonwy Llyr BASED ON: Eilonwy (The Black Cauldron)     FACE CLAIM: Skyler Samuels PRONOUNS: She/Her BIRTHDAY: August 8, 2002 CURRENT STATUS: Taken
Character Information || cw: child abuse mention, kidnapping, fire ||
Eilonwy always found it interesting that ‘princess’ and ‘prisoner’ were so close alphabetically. Because for the majority of her life, her identity as one made her feel like the other. Eilonwy was born as the heir and Crown Princess to the Mona Throne, the last of the line of Llyr sorceresses. But as she was told over and over again, she was never likely to be as powerful as them. This was because (according to her Aunt Achren who was raising her) her mother, Angharad, had thrown away hundreds of years of tradition to be with a Mundus man. So for the first time, the magical blood of Llyr was diluted in Eilonwy. Apparently, this was why her relatives had decided that she needed to be trained properly with her Aunt.
The problem from Eilonwy’s perspective was that the training was inconsistent at best and bad at worst. She spent most of her days by herself, wandering Spiral House, and looking for things to occupy her curious brain and explain the world she found herself in. The doors to the outside were always locked, but the house itself was big and full of hidden rooms and secret passages which it was possible to find if she looked hard enough. Occasionally, she would have servants or tutors to homeschool her, but they never lasted long enough for her to develop a real attachment to them. Eventually, they would always disappear without saying goodbye. After experiencing the consequences the few times she tried to ask where they had gone, she learned to keep her questions to herself. Instead, she watched. And listened.
The times Achren would call her into the inner study were almost worse. Achren was the only one who would teach Eilonwy about her magical legacy, and she started to introduce Eilonwy to the basics of fire manipulation and aether manipulation. But these sessions were typically short, frustrating, and painful for Eilonwy. Mainly because Eilonwy would ask a question about why something worked or would question a process, Achren would lose her temper, and the two of them would fight until Eilonwy was locked back in her room nursing her pride and her bruises.
So Eilonwy learned how to teach herself. She found the library and read everything she could get her hands on, from books about magical history to fiction to modern science. Sheer stubbornness kept her going when the books she found were far above her level and she slowly began to unlock their secrets. The more she learned, the more she wanted to be able to explore the outside world. But the books gave her another valuable tool. They showed her models for living that didn’t look like her Aunt or the scared servants. Models that included heroes, adventurers, carers, and healers. Deliberately, she started copying what she saw in the books to make sure she was different from her Aunt in every way.
Everything changed when she was 14. That was the day she had finally found a way to sneak into her Aunt’s work room when the woman wasn’t around. It only took a quick look to realize that her Aunt was experimenting with blood magic and necromancy, something that all of Eilonwy’s studying had told her was dark and forbidden. Worse, she found a scroll detailing how to take another’s magic. And the only other potential sorcerer around was her.
From that moment, Eilonwy was determined to find a way out of that house. Her opportunity came the day a sorcerer and his apprentice showed up at their door. Eilonwy wasn’t sure why her aunt had opened the door to let them in, especially since the apprentice was immediately locked into a room by himself while the sorcerer was led away. But with the memories of that dark workroom in the back of her head, she threw together a go bag, including her magical bauble, and went to rescue the boy who was around her own age. Together, they snuck towards the back of the house. Just before they left, her bauble flashed and illuminated a magical sword Eilonwy had never noticed. The boy immediately grabbed it, and the two of them raced out of the house together.
They were only a few yards away when the house exploded in flames. She doesn’t know what caused it or if there were any survivors. But it didn’t matter. All they needed to do now was run. The apprentice insisted they needed to take the sword back to the castle of Caer Colur, which distant memories told Eilonwy that was her home. They hitchhiked with trustworthy travelers when they could and walked when they couldn’t, Eilonwy always looking back over her shoulder in case her aunt had survived to follow them.
When they arrived, there was an immediate explosion of sound and movement. Eilonwy couldn’t understand why they were making so much fuss, until she realized it was for her. That was when she finally learned the truth.
It turned out that only part of her aunt’s stories had been the truth. It was true that Angharad was a sorceress and that Eilonwy was the Crown Princess. It was also true that she had fallen in love with a Mundus man. As Mona was one of the few remaining fully magic communities, this did cause a huge scandal. But by all accounts, the couple was happy and loved their daughter. Which is why it was so shocking for them when Eilonwy was kidnapped by Achren. Both her parents went searching for her and were never seen again. So even the idea that Achren was her aunt had been a lie told to keep her compliant. And she had no idea if she would ever see her parents again.
Reeling under the weight of these revelations, a kindly sorcerer who had helped to train her mother offered to let her stay with him until she was back on her feet and ready to face the reality of the Court with all of its people and expectations. Gratefully, she retired with him to his farm. It was the first time she had someone consistently paying attention to her education, and she finally started to make some progress on understanding the elements and the magic of her bauble, although it was slow going. But those were the happiest years of her life so far.
When she turned 18, she suddenly found out that her parents had set up a trust for her years ago to attend university. It hadn’t been touched in years, but the seed had been enough that the money would fully cover her university experience and living expenses. The time gap had also been long enough for Eilonwy to recover from her initial shock and grief so she was ready to start exploring the world and meeting new people.
She immediately applied for PrideU in Swynlake. Now that she was free, she wanted to meet people, both Magick and Mundus, to better understand the two worlds that she straddled. She wants to experience everything that university has to offer and finally learn what it is like to have friends her age. And maybe, maybe, she will be able to start finding out what happened to her parents and if they are still alive after all. She is nervous as this is the first time she will be leaving the island of Mona. But there’s a small part of her that is also hoping that if she’s in a new place, she’ll stop looking over her shoulder for Achren to find her and finish what she started.
