@alyssmainwarning I'll make a new post because the other one got quite long!
I really liked Hilfred too. He is very loyal, and it seemed almost cruel the way Arista toyed with him in the end. I know she liked him well enough, and I genuinely think she would have tried to marry him if she could, but she would have been miserable I think. She doesn't really know him - and he doesn't really know her, despite following her around for so long. There is a lot of hero worship and resentment going on both ways.
But he is definitely a good character!!
What do you think about Amelia and Sir Breckton? I really like them, but overall the series was a bit too "straight" in the sense that everyone hooked up with someone of the opposite gender at some point lol
(except for my queen Modina, who refused to marry that douchebag, adopted a mir and became the most powerful woman in that world 😎)

.... convince me to read Riyria Revelations?
>:)
If you like stories that feature adventure, mystery, action, and very close platonic relationships, then you will love these books. The two main characters are a mercenary/thief duo, Hadrian and Royce. Hadrian is the big, kind, golden retriever type, and Royce is the slinky, grumpy, paranoid cat type who is unwillingly being dragged into developing a conscience by his partner (best friend in the entire world) Hadrian lol. The dialogue and writing is hilarious, there are SO many touching scenes between Hadrian and Royce (and other many characters!), and the author isn’t afraid to have moments where a character says “I love you” platonically and sincerely. There are also two female characters later in the series (starts second book iirc but could be sooner), whose friendship I just absolutely adore. (They aren’t the only female characters btw. I just realized I might’ve made it sound that way haha)
(And while i highlight the platonic relationships, there are also romantic ones as well lol.)
So please read them!! Idk why it seems like so many people are sleeping on this series because it seems like so many people on here’s cup of tea…

Heir of Novron - Michael J. Sullivan 4.25/5 horns
Jot-it-down as it happens commentary and i was EXCITED.
-Off of the book’s dedication, I have to say because I’ve thought of this often- I really like how Sullivan writes women. They’re simply people, not OMG LOOK AT THIS W O M A N, and I like that.
-”Politely confounding and pointedly confusing” - honestly, goals.
-Lady Genevieve is a force of nature. Good God, woman.
-Nimbus the sword whisperer?
-...So rip Gwen is what I’m getting from her reading Myron’s palm.
-Lol, I know Hadrian, and even *I* was enthralled by his ~knighthood story.
-This first Royce-Merrick talk is surprisingly collaborative, easy answers.
-I know the robe healed Kine, but from Mince’s POV it feels like we’re reading about a zombie or a vampire, lol.
-Aww, maaan, I hope Hadrian doesn’t kill Breckton, just ffs let a couple be happy in this series.
-I like the stakes in this book (the fifth one).
-Oh no, please don’t let Modina die!
-Why is he shirtless, good God, why is Hadrian always shirtless.
-You don’t seriously mean to say Magnus betrayed us again (well, “again” isn’t accurate, but you get it).
-Hadrian lifted Arista’s head and rested it on his thigh as they lay in their communal bed…? How does that work? Why does that work if it works? That’s a weird arrangement.
-Oof, Modina lives <3
-My Thrace/Modina fancast has always been Anya Taylor-Joy, and man, she’d nail this scene with Saldur.
-Aw, pity, I actually liked having villainous disaster Archie around.
-Alric?! Mauvin?!?! AAHHH it’s the besties!
-AAAHH I’m excited.
-Oh, Gaunt is a twat. Good to know.
-Aw, damn it, Royce, just as Modina was setting things straight.
-Aaand there goes Gwen.
-Lenare kicking ass and taking names, go Lenare!! Justice for the Pickerings!
-There’s something so heartbreakingly and heartwarmingly funny when Hadrian goes in “cut that shit out” mode on Royce.
-They are actually talking, Hadrian and Royce are having an open, honest conversation and I’m eating it up, oh my God, yes, keep it coming.
-Ooh, Alenda/Mauvin?
-Some parts are so appropriately doom and gloom and some parts are simply so adorable, like Alenda’s monologue about how Myron will hate her.
-Yaaay, both Alric and Mauvin are going to Percepliquis, their dreammmm.
-I’m so very excited for this trip.
-What on earth is the Patriarch planning.
-Oooh, oooh, I like this. Who is the mole. Is it Magnus again? Elden, maybe beyond all suspicion? Surely not sweet Myron.
-Justice for Renwick. Let him make it to Aquesta.
-Another brother dying on Mauvin :(.
-Okay, but we won’t actually let Royce die, right? Right?
-If Royce is the heir, who’s Mercy? Another diversion?
-Monsignor Merton, my my!
-Shut up, THAT’s Mercy’s part! Is she his daughter?
-SHE IS!
-They all liveeeee, oof, that was intense.
-A white feather will drop as Nimbus leaves, right? Right?!
-No shit, Nimbus is Royce’s friend??
-Yesss, a white feather, I called ittttt.
-Okay, this is my favorite volume of the trilogy. I enjoyed it immensely.
-A bit rushed there at the end though? No POV from Amilia, who we’ve followed for so long? No focus on Mauvin, who’s been character developing through three books and has had at least one POV part - just an ‘anyway he got married and rules now’?
-But yes, exciting stuff.

Riyria Chronicles is so funny because Royce and Hadrian never set out to antagonise the church but that’s what happens. Every single time. Half the time they don’t even realise it
