SUMMARY: An adept, blind acupuncturist must balance his family’s livelihood, the health of the royal family, and his personal secret.

THIS MOVIE HAS EVERYTHING: Poison, needles, palace politics, Ming vs Qing, heirs to the throne, night watches, workplace courtships, royal tyrants, magnifying glasses, and lots of medicine.

HOT TAKE: I don't really have any complaints about this one. It's a good what-if historical take on real palace tragedies, it uses cinematic light and day to its advantage, and the stakes are worthy of an edge of your seat position!

Quite a sad story, where all the good people died, save for our protagonist.

The Night Owl (Korean: 올빼미; RR: Olbbaemi; lit. Owl) is a 2022 South Korean period thriller drama film directed by Ahn Tae-jin, starring Ryu Jun-yeol and Yoo Hae-jin.

Will is still kissing him as he shrugs his way out of his flannel, hands flying to the buttons on Hannibal's shirt. He's trembling, though, and it makes him struggle to pluck them open. With a breathless laugh, Hannibal drops Will onto the bed, following almost immediately after.

The bed is barely big enough for Will. For a moment he's shocked that it supports both of their weights. He can't think much about it, though. Can't seem to think much of anything as Hannibal's warm palms slide beneath his shirt. The other man is sucking red shapes into Will's throat again, making him arch and buck and grind his cock against the thigh pressed between his legs.

"I-I should probably tell you that I— God—" Hannibal's fingers find one of Will's nipples, rolling it with an irresistible roughness that makes Will's eyes roll. "I've um, never done this before. With another guy, I mean. Or... or anybody."

Hannibal steals any chance of Will voicing his insecurity, his tongue brushing over Will's own as the other man starts tugging off his clothes. Will only pulls away to rip the faded Smashing Pumpkins T-Shirt over his head, tossing it to some unseen corner of his room before seeking Hannibal's mouth again.

He hides his face when Hannibal's hands drift to Will's belt, his blushing cheeks buried in the soft expanse where Hannibal's neck meets his shoulder. Will mouths at the skin there, too desperate to be still. A wet gasp shakes itself from his chest as nimble fingers reach into his boxers, palming at Will's length. Hannibal chuckles, and Will muffles the resulting whine.

Gently, Hannibal's other hand tugs the curls at the back of Will's head. "Look at me, Will," he whispers, and Will shivers. "I want to see you."

Will can't make himself deny him. "Sorry," he chokes, forcing himself to relax. He feels like a mess. He'll die if Hannibal stops. "I'm just, uh—"

"Nervous?" Hannibal asks, pulling his hand out of Will's jeans to rest it on his thigh. Eyes glued to the blankets and blushing fiercely, Will nods.

A shrill ring of fear sounds in his skull when Hannibal rises from the bed, a shy piece of Will that's still worried about pushing away the only person he's ever wanted this badly. The chill shifts to an electric heat in his gut when Hannibal's knees hit the floor. He looks up at Will, tilts his head, lifts a brow.

Fuck.

"I..."

"Don't be scared," Hannibal purrs, lying in wait. "I can help you relax, if you like."

doing my post-Blue Dragon search, and it turns out My Dearest wasn't Ahn Eun Jin's first foray into King Injo/Crown Prince Sohyeon era (not that it's much of a shocker probably, i just hardly ever watch Korean feature films and i find it interesting that both these things are very recent). only in The Night Owl she plays that notorious concubine of Injo, Jo Soyong, played in MD by So Yoo Jin
