The Massacre (of St. Bartholomew's Eve) The TARDIS materialises in Paris in the year 1572 and the Doctor decides to visit the famous apothecary Charles Preslin. Steven, meanwhile, is befriended by a group of Huguenots from the household of the Protestant Admiral de Coligny. Having rescued a young serving girl, Anne Chaplet, from some pursuing guards, the Huguenots gain their first inkling of a heinous plan being hatched at the command of the Catholic Queen Mother, Catherine de Medici.
The Runaway Bride Killer Santas, exploding baubles, an alien spaceship shaped like a giant star — Christmas with the Tenth Doctor is anything but a silent night…

So, I only just finished the Fourth Doctor's run (and I haven't seen any New Who, so no spoilers please in my Classic Who journey), but I really wish they had kept at the premise of using the lead actor for dual roles as both the Doctor and the villain for a story arch. Admittedly, very few people have watched The Massacre at St. Bartholomew's Eve except through the reconstructions, and they are hard to get through, but seeing Hartnell in another role was definitely the highlight of the story. However, Enemy of the World is utterly fantastic storytelling and highlights Troughton's superb acting (and solidified Two as my favorite Doctor).
The setup is such fun and rife with possibilities in an expansive universe like Doctor Who and I wish we got more of it.

I think about the massacre episode of doctor who a lot. Not only is it the rare companion driven story, but I truthfully love the character drama. Doctor who was originally billed as an educational program for children. The time travel so children could learn about historical events and the future stuff so they could learn about science. And what the massacre does is makes Steven an audience surrogate because he doesn’t know about this tragedy at all.
Doctor Who is a British tv show and this event was a French tragedy, so they might not even be aware this happened. Granted I’m coming at this from an American perspective and like it might’ve been mentioned in a AP European history course I took in high school but not in depth. Just another tragedy of the Protestant reformation.
But here in Doctor who, you learn what happened through Steven’s interactions with those who were there. And as it all plays out you’re forced to contend with the fact that this happened. This was real. They were real people, not just a page in the history. Steven’s reaction of shock and anger to the Doctor asserting that he was right to do as he did and that he wasn’t guilty of Ann’s possible death is how we’d all react. How could he turn that girl away! He saved Katarina from the fall of Troy after all!
But then you’d remember how that played out. What happened to Katarina. And suddenly the Doctor’s motives for leaving Ann behind become more muddled. Was it actually to preserve history? Or was it because he thought Ann had a better chance of surviving the St Bartholomew day’s massacre than she did in the TARDIS?
But Steven doesn’t think of this, and most of the audience probably doesn’t either. So he storms off. Not even caring where the TARDIS lands next. Granted Steven comes back like 5 minutes later and we don’t know why, and the Doctor is absolved of Ann’s murder via Dodo’s existence, but still.
I know I went off topic there at the end but the point is doctor who expertly educated it’s audience on a historical event. And it gets the audience invested in what happened by leveraging their lack of knowledge. So that like Steven, you never want anyone to needlessly die like that again.
It’s probably my favorite who story after remembrance of the daleks and I wish people would give it a chance, despite it being lost. The audio drama version on audible is very well done.
Edit: last thing. A subtle detail I really like is when the Doctor realized what’s about to happen, he called Ann by her name before he told her to leave asap. The first Doctor always called the young women he met my child, so the gravity of what was going to happen hit him hard and they were hiding in a somewhat famous Huguenot’s house. The Doctor was genuinely trying to save her within the rules he thought he had to go by.

"The Massacre of St. Bartholomew's Eve" wins as THE saddest story of classic Who.
That montage of the massacre along with the characters we've been introduced to just rips my heart in two.
Add in Steven getting so upset and arguing with the Doctor about leaving everyone behind, and I'm just done for 😭😭😭💔💔💔

Who is your favourite companion?
ROUND 2 MASTERPOST
propaganda under the cut
Barbara Wright
Come on; she's the teacher who taught the Doctor to be a decent person. Without her 99.995% of the series would never have happened. Also the Aztecs thought she was a goddess and I mean; I'm pretty sure lots of fans agree! (@hartnellwho /@elden-12 )
Steven Taylor
Come take a walk with me boy. In my mind palace. Steven is technically the first solo companion bc of the serial “The Massacre of St Bartholomew’s Eve,” which is a fantastic serial btw. For a 60s companion there are some serious story/character arc ideas put down for him in the show, namely survivors guilt and #HATING the doctor. He and the Doctor have such an interesting relationship too. They don’t get along but there’s some sort of gradual respect that grows over time. Steven is a bitch and cocky but also the best fucking guy in the universe. He’s a hotshot pilot he’s got a panda plushie he’s probably bisexual (READ THE EMPIRE OF GLASS. CAN ANYBODY FUCKING HEAR ME) he’s miserable he’s kind of a genius (listen to the cold equations he does physics on the FLY under PRESSURE with his HANDS FREEZING IN SPACE) everyone he cares about suffers some sort of agonizing fate ….. just like the Doctor …. hmmmmmm…. Anyways. Thanks for walking with me boy. Watch The Gunfighters. (@abominandus )

Behind him (Henry II of France) he left a legacy of weak boy kings, an increasingly dominant queen mother in Katherine de Medici and a country more riven by religious differences than England had ever been. For 30 years, France suffered the horrors of civil war, with great loss of life and bloody massacres that stunned Europe, such as that of St Bartholomew’s Eve in 1571, when at least three thousand people (ten times more than had suffered martyrdom in Mary’s reign) were murdered in Paris.

TV stories where the Doctor has only male companions
Because there are so few of them
We’ll start with the ones that have regular series companions:
The Massacre (1966): 1st Doctor and Steven. Yes, Dodo shows up at the very end, but that doesn’t count.
The Keeper of Traken (1981): 4th Doctor and Adric. Introducing Nyssa, who doesn’t technically join the team until Logopolis.
The Return of Doctor Mysterio (2016): 12th Doctor and Nardole, featuring Grant Gordon.
Yep, that’s it as far as I recall. If we expand our list to guest/recurring characters, we can include:
The Next Doctor (2008): 10th Doctor and Jackson Lake.
The End of Time (2010): 10th Doctor and Wilf, who is not a full-time companion.
Closing Time (2011): 11th Doctor and Craig. Amy is in this one, but only briefly, and not in the role of companion.
Then, if we include episodes that start with a male companion before bringing in a female companion partway through the story:
The Evil of the Daleks (1967): 2nd Doctor and Jamie, introducing Victoria.
The Wheel in Space (1968): 2nd Doctor and Jamie again, introducing Zoe.
Planet of Fire (1984): 5th Doctor, Turlough, and Kamelion (man-shaped android), introducing Peri.
The Pilot (2016): 12th Doctor and Nardole, but Bill shows up pretty much immediately.
Honorable mentions:
The Ribos Operation (1978): Starts with the 4th Doctor and K-9. K-9 is voiced by a man, but he is a robot and, perhaps more importantly for the purposes of this list, a dog.
The Five Doctors (1983): There are plenty of female companions in this one, but the 2nd Doctor is initially paired up with the Brigadier.
The Two Doctors (1985): The 2nd Doctor starts the episode with Jamie before the two team up with the 6th Doctor and Peri.
The Lodger (2010): Amy is sometimes there over an earpiece, but this one is mostly the 11th Doctor and Craig.
A Christmas Carol (2010): See above, but with Kazran Sardick instead of Craig.
The Deadly Assassin (1976) and Heaven Sent (2015): All-male crew in that the Doctor is the only crew.
The Power of the Doctor (2022): This one gets a mention for having a same-sex TARDIS team for most of the story.
Interestingly, the trend of the lone female companion doesn’t start to emerge until the later years. It took nearly ten years for the Doctor to travel with a girl unchaperoned, if you count the boys from UNIT as companions. Then the show gradually transitioned to the “Doctor + girl” formula that’s the norm today.
