So I just started watching 'The Mallorca Files'.

It's about a British (played by a Welsh actress) and a German (played by an Austrian actor) police detective stationed on Mallorca and working for the local police force. And yes. I know it's a television show made for entertainment. And I know the whole setup is complete BS.

But what really tickles my marble? It's the whole language thing. Half the cast is German portraying Germans (as far as I’ve watched the show). Quarter of the cast is Spanish portraying Spanish people and the rest is English. And everyone speaks freaking English. Even when the same -non English speaking - compatriots are amongst themselves.

Oh, the German friends who are visiting the island for a stag night?! Speaking English.

The Spanish who live on Mallorca? Speaking English.

And all of them with audible accents so you as the viewer are clued in that they’re ‘the Germans’ or ‘the Natives’.

Look, I get that it is a BBC show primarily made for a UK audience. But the first episode established that the German police officer speaks Castellan and maybe a bit of Catalan, the native tongue of Mallorca (correct me here if I'm wrong). And it is established that the English police officer, upon being stationed on Mallorca, starts to learn Castellan. So let them speak Castellan! Even if it's just to order a coffee or something.

And when the German detective interrogates one of the many German persons of interest, why not let them speak in their native tongue? Might be more useful.

And for anyone who doesn't understand either language, use subtitles, for f*** sake!

And the reason I think they do this is because they expect their audience to

A: not be proficient in foreign languages and B: be too lazy to read subtitles.

Which is just downright insulting.

Have you seen ‘The Parliament’?! Wonderful show about the European Parliament with people from all over Europe and in my opinion they did a wonderful job with the language barriers. As in they provided subtitles when necessary which made the show that much more authentic.

This new crime show declared itself to be the first English-language “police procedural” drama produced and set on the French Riviera since the 197-s although its thunder was rather stolen by Britbox’s Murder In Province, which was made later but aired first. Set on Côte d’Azur, this one focuses on the unlikely crime-fighting partnership between idealistic cop Camille Delmasse (Lucie Lucas, Gloria) and ex-mafia con artist Harry King (Jamie Bamber, Battlestar Galactica) who solve a murder case each week, while Lucie hunts for the criminals who framed her police hero dad.

We rather approve of all these cosy crime series set in exotic locations - or just ones with great weather, really. The Mallorca Files (BBC UKTV, Wednesday), for example, or this new one that is said to be the first English-language procedural to be produced in Cannes in more than 50 years. (Riviera presumably doesn’t count as it’s not a procedural.) Lucie Lucas is the local detective who teams up with a former con artist and Englishman played by Jamie Bamber. The show is created by Chris Murray, known for his work on Midsomer Murders, Agatha Raisin and the rebooted Van Der Valk.

There’s something for everyone in this Riviera detective show: great hair, chiselled jaws, luxury locations, sexual tension. And it’s this last element between its lead characters, detective Camille Delmasse (Lucie Lucas) and slightly shady Harry King (Jamie Bamber) that’s most dominant. Bamber’s con-artist grifts will put some viewers in mind of Pierce Brosnan in Remington Steele. Appropriately enough, as Bamber (in a tux in a casino) looks like he’s auditioning for James Bond.

Hey there! So I recently discovered this show and was in the process of becoming more and more obsessed with it until it occurred me to check its Wiki page and I found out that there has been no season 3 announcement for over a year now! It kind of broke my heart and now idk if I want to keep watching if there won't be any more content cause it will hurt too much. I know it's a long shot, but do you know if there are any updates on this or if we should consider the show as good as ended? And thank you for your efforts on keeping the fandom alive!!! :)

I’m pretty sure the only official news we’ve been given about s3 is that “the team are continuing to develop a third season of The Mallorca Files, which will pick up the story of Miranda and Max, including those adventures the crew weren’t able to film this time around” (when s2 was cut short by Covid).

People keep misinterpreting this statement, so I should make it clear that this doesn’t necessarily mean s3 will happen. It just means that new scripts and things exist, and can be used if — and only if — s3 is greenlit. As far as we’re aware, this hasn’t happened yet.

I’m told I’m a pessimist, so take this next bit with a grain of salt, but personally I don’t think we’ll be getting any more TMF. Budget cuts, scheduling issues where the people involved (especially the core cast) have taken on new projects and things, and even just the sheer amount of time between s2 and a potential s3 mean that the longer we go without an official announcement, the harder it’s going to be for them to create any more episodes. And also the BBC keep killing off their daytime crime shows so they can make more quiz shows nobody wants.

Despite this, I still highly recommend watching all the eps if you haven’t already! Obviously idk where you got up to before, but the Max and Miranda interactions in s2 are brilliant, as are the two new recurring characters. Plus, although we possibly won’t be getting any more canon content, the fandom is going strong over on AO3, with more than 100 works, and new writing being posted fairly frequently.
