Interview with Jamie Bamber (Archie Hughes)

(Image: Joss Barratt)
Here is Jamie's section of the BBC's media pack 'Beyond Paradise' interviews.
Also, you scroll to the bottom of this post to read some lovely things his co-stars have said about him in their press pack interview.

Archie’s back in Shipton Abbott. How did it feel returning to the world of Beyond Paradise?
I couldn’t have been more delighted when Tim Key, our executive producer, suggested we meet for lunch in London. He pitched a storyline to me that would bring Archie back. It really surprised me - it wasn’t what I was expecting. I love that part of the world and I love all the people involved. It’s such a warm-hearted work environment. The vibe you get on-screen is very much echoed behind the camera. So for me it was a no-brainer! The storyline was really fun, and I liked what Archie had to do this time. The character had moved on, he’s matured and learned from his previous heartaches. Hopefully viewers will enjoy the ride.
What has Archie been up to since we last saw him?
It’s not explicitly stated in the story but in my head Archie has been away licking his wounds. He’s a man of independent means - he runs a vineyard and a big business and is very hands-on with that. But he’s also taken some time to travel, to explore the wine business in other parts of the world and to reflect. He’s a middle-aged man, single, and he’s had many opportunities in life but he’s burned some bridges along the way. I think he’s done a bit of maturing and comes back to Shipton Abbott as someone who’s ready to be more responsible, vulnerable, and open to new opportunities.
Archie was determined to move on from Martha. Where do we find him now in terms of his feelings for her?
I think Archie will always have more than just a soft spot for Martha. They’re childhood friends and their families know each other. They’re from the same part of the world and they almost got married! That history will never change.
For the record, I don’t think Archie was a bad guy in the first series. This is the challenge of being in a drama where you’re not the lead character and everyone’s rooting for Humphrey. In another show, Archie’s show, everyone would be rooting for him and Martha. I don’t think Archie did anything wrong. He tried his hand. He’s a middle-aged man and, if you sit on the sidelines your whole life, you’ll stay there. He ducked out when asked to duck out and I think he did it with dignity.
But now, hopefully, they can find a way for their relationship to evolve and become what it needs to be in the future. But that’s something to be explored throughout this series - whether they can develop a new kind of relationship that fits their lives today.
What might future relationships hold for Archie?
He’s come back ready for other relationships. He’s not the kind of man who’s happy being a “solo traveler” through life - he’s looking for partnership. And without spoiling too much, he will give it a go somewhere in Shipton Abbott this season.
Did you enjoy returning to Devon and Cornwall for filming? Were there any particular shooting locations that stood out to you?
The first time I visited Cornwall it was for my 13th birthday and I read Jamaica Inn by Daphne du Maurier there. The romance of Cornwall has never left me. The smuggling, pirates, shipwrecks, fishing industry, tin mines, scenery, surfing… And I’m a golfer, so Cornwall has many lures for me.
Beyond Paradise is such a well-crafted, warm and engaging piece of television. It’s a no-brainer for me to return. I couldn’t wait to revisit Looe, which I have a real soft spot for. This time, I discovered Polperro a bit more. I love running and walking along the cliffs, I’m a bit of a fitness freak. My Cornwall routine is running on the cliffs and exploring. I stayed near Talland Bay where I’d swim in the mornings before work. It’s stunning.
I also caught up with an old English teacher of mine, Mr. Venning. He taught me Animal Farm and was a big inspiration. He’s from the area and we had coffee at the Smugglers’ Hotel. He shared some local lore which was fascinating.
What can audiences look forward to this series?
More of the same but even better and different. The “case of the week” stories are quirky, funny, and moving-everything you’d expect from Beyond Paradise! But for me, the real heart of the show is the relationships and character arcs. The main characters all have rich, evolving storylines. They’re three-dimensional - navigating love, loss, illness and life’s ups and downs. That’s where Archie operates. He’s part of that beating heart of the show. I have a confession though, I don’t even read the case scripts! I only focus on Archie’s storyline so I can watch the episodes like a viewer and discover the cases as they unfold. Archie doesn’t know about the police work anyway, so it’s fitting!
But yes, the show’s special because it balances technical, clever mysteries with deep character stories. That’s what makes it stand out.
What Others Have Said:
Kris Marshall (DI Humphrey Goodman)
Archie returns this season. How does this affect Humphrey?
Humphrey doesn’t feel threatened by Archie’s return. He’s always been a confident and emotionally strong person, and he’s very secure in his relationship with Martha. In past series, his issues stemmed from Archie working so closely with Martha but this time, Humphrey isn’t concerned. He’s more bemused than anything else. He isn’t losing sleep over it and is accepting of the situation.
What’s it like working with Jamie Bamber?
Working with Jamie is fantastic. It’s nice to have another actor of a similar age and experience on set, especially since we have both been in the industry since the 90s. While we didn’t know each other well back then, we have a lot of mutual friends, and it’s great to have someone around who shares that history. Jamie is a seasoned actor and a lovely person who brings a lot of fun to the set. We get along really well and it’s always a pleasure working with him.
Sally Bretton (Martha Lloyd)
Archie’s back on the scene. How does this make Martha feel?
Martha’s completely fine with Archie being around as long as Humphrey is okay with it. She likes him, but she’s clear that their past is firmly in the past. There’s mutual respect and closeness between them but absolutely no romance. It’s all very platonic. Working with Jamie (Bamber) is always a joy. He’s such a talented actor and I love doing scenes with him. He brings so much to the table, so it’s always fun to share those moments on screen.
Barbara Flynn (Anne Lloyd)
Is there a particular episode or scene in this series that stands out to you?
It was also lovely to have Jamie (Bamber) back this series. Anne has always had a soft spot for Archie - she originally hoped Martha would marry him! Whenever he’s around, it’s like the lights go on for Anne. Those moments are such a delight to play.

tramell tillman is the kind of actor that you expect to look up and find years of theatre experience with at least half a dozen shakespeare credits to his name but then on the severance podcast he’s like “yeah i didn’t realize i wanted to be an actor until a few years ago 🤗” as if his role as milchick isn’t the craziest/coolest/scariest performance you’ve seen

Haunted car au part 19
Previous. Masterpost
Out of all the days the past week, today was pretty good. He has an actual day off that he plans to use by getting to hang out with his little brothers. He hasn't spent time with Duke in a while. Maybe he should plan a brother bonding hour with him, then have lunch with Tim, take Damian to that one documentary about the ecosystem of Madagascar, and wrap up the day by dragging Jason back to the manor to have an impromptu kids dinner. Alfred might be convinced to make a pot of Mac and Cheese and hot dogs if he gives him some pictures he snuck of Tim and Damian ‘tolerating each other's presence’ while comparing lighting in a picture Tim took vs a painting Dami did of the same alleyway. Dick was proud of his little brother's artistic abilities. Even if they all use it to mock his fantastic skills at drawing stick figures.
Dick was just about to open the cave door when it opened without his input and the Batmobile roared out, barely missing him.
“Ooooh someone is going to get Grounded™.”
Dick sped into the cave and changed into his gear in record time, and followed where the Batmobile may have gone. It wasn't hard with all the daytime gothamites filming and excitedly talking about the Batmobile showing him where to go. He caught up soon after, making ‘wee-woo’ noises in his com to try to get whichever sibling in the car to respond.
“ACAB!”
“Hood, please pull over.” Dick asked, voice full of affection and exasperation.
“Only if you ask Danny nicely N.” Duke laughed out.
“Ok? Danny, could you please pull over?”
Dick was half deafened by the song ‘Fuck Tha Police’ over the coms before the Batmobile revved it's engine and went faster though Gotham.
“Well, Sugar Honey Iced Tea.”

Heat Magazine

This new crime show declared itself to be the first English-language “police procedural” drama produced and set on the French Riviera since the 197-s although its thunder was rather stolen by Britbox’s Murder In Province, which was made later but aired first. Set on Côte d’Azur, this one focuses on the unlikely crime-fighting partnership between idealistic cop Camille Delmasse (Lucie Lucas, Gloria) and ex-mafia con artist Harry King (Jamie Bamber, Battlestar Galactica) who solve a murder case each week, while Lucie hunts for the criminals who framed her police hero dad.
NZ Listener

We rather approve of all these cosy crime series set in exotic locations - or just ones with great weather, really. The Mallorca Files (BBC UKTV, Wednesday), for example, or this new one that is said to be the first English-language procedural to be produced in Cannes in more than 50 years. (Riviera presumably doesn’t count as it’s not a procedural.) Lucie Lucas is the local detective who teams up with a former con artist and Englishman played by Jamie Bamber. The show is created by Chris Murray, known for his work on Midsomer Murders, Agatha Raisin and the rebooted Van Der Valk.
Radio Times

There’s something for everyone in this Riviera detective show: great hair, chiselled jaws, luxury locations, sexual tension. And it’s this last element between its lead characters, detective Camille Delmasse (Lucie Lucas) and slightly shady Harry King (Jamie Bamber) that’s most dominant. Bamber’s con-artist grifts will put some viewers in mind of Pierce Brosnan in Remington Steele. Appropriately enough, as Bamber (in a tux in a casino) looks like he’s auditioning for James Bond.
Total TV Guide

This is all delightfully To Catch A Thief and Moonlighting. It revolves around the bickering yet flirtatious relationship between detective Camille Delmasse (Lucie Lucas) and international conman Harry King (Jamie Bamber), solving crimes on the French Riviera. Meanwhile Camille’s colleague Lea Robert (Shy’m), has a secret crush on her...
What’s On TV

When Cannes detective Camille Delmasse (Lucie Lucas) collides with debonair art collector Harry King (Jamie Bamber) during a high-speed pursuit, she’s irritated by the smooth-talking stranger. But as she investigates the death of a celebrated street artist known as the Jester, she and Harry keep crossing paths - and when Harry reveals he may be able to help Camille clear her father, the former chief of police, from alleged corruption charges, the two strike a mutually beneficial deal... Camille being a policewoman is a problem for Harry because he’s got something to hide,’ says Jamie. ‘But they each have something that the other needs. Gradually they get more dependent on each other, and become the od couple that works together solving crimes!’

“I don’t know if this is setting the bar too high or if I’m allowed to say this, but people should be expecting answers,” she says. “It’s coming back to where the pilot was, which I think is perfect timing for that. It’s just becoming more and more unhinged, and Natalie goes through more than anything. And I said this last season, but I’ll keep saying it: Now you see what has made Natalie so messed up. There’s a bit more of that connection between me and Juliette now, even though now she’s gone. It was a fun season, but it was really fucking draining.”

Kit literally tops Hollywood Reporter list

Next Gen Talent 2024: The 10 Hottest Young Stars in Hollywood
From Netflix-turned-Broadway sensation Kit Connor to DC newcomer Aaron Pierre, meet the young stars climbing everyone’s call sheet.
Thank you for the tipoff @thegoldenretrieverandthegaynerd (X)

Kit Connor and Josh Rivera photographed November 11th at Broken Shaker in New York; Source: Hollywood Reporter (X)
1. Kit Connor
Connor is ready to break out beyond high school. He built his career as a child actor (see him as a young Elton John in Rocketman) before scoring the lead role in the high school rom-com series Heartstopper. This desire to graduate is part of what drew the Brit to Broadway, where he’s currently leading Romeo + Juliet with Rachel Zegler, bringing Shakespeare to the Gen Z masses. “It just felt ballsy,” Connor says. “It’s been what I’ve been trying to do with my career decisions recently, just try and do things that are a little bit more ballsy.” Connor, 20, isn’t sure if Heartstopper will return for a fourth season, but after the curtain goes down on his Broadway stint, he’ll start promoting his most adult role yet in Alex Garland’s A24 thriller Warfare. After that, he says, “I’d like to take a little break just so that I can kind of cleanse my mind and my palate, and then I’d like to do something completely different.” He adds, “I want to try and spend the next couple years just doing quite hard stuff so that I can try and force myself to get better.”
IF I WASN’T AN ACTOR I’D BE “I would first and foremost be a student due to my age. [My major] would probably be something like film studies, English or history, those are the subjects I found the most interesting in school because they were about people. I never did well with numbers. Still don’t.”
THE PERSON I AM DYING TO WORK WITH “I would love to work with Josh O’Connor. He and I are friendly, and every time I see him I think how I would love to see him at work.”
HOW I DECOMPRESS ON SET “I like my private time. On Warfare, we didn’t do that at all. Every night we did everything together and I wouldn’t have changed it at all. But a lot of time on jobs, I go home and just sit and listen to music.”
BEST ADVICE I’VE GOTTEN WORKING IN ENTERTAINMENT “Trusting the process. Quite a lot of my friends in the industry have given me that general advice.”
SONG OR ALBUM I HAVE ON REPEAT “David Bowie, The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. I used to, at the beginning of the run of the play, I was listening to a lot of music that would try to hype me up because I wanted to have a load of energy going into the play but then I started re-listening to that album‚ “Rock and Roll Suicide”, “Five Years”, “Moonage Daydream” — that put me in a good mindset for [the play].”
THE MOVIE OR SERIES I AM OBSESSED WITH “The Sopranos. I started watching it when I got to [New York] because I thought Jersey is just around the corner.”
MOST HOLLYWOOD THING THAT HAS HAPPENED TO ME “There is something pretty crazy about seeing your face on a billboard in any capacity.”
