Gollum Returns! Serkis Directs and Stars in New ‘Lord of the Rings’ Film: “The Hunt for Gollum”
Tumblr media
Excitement is brewing amongst Tolkien enthusiasts as Warner Bros. announces a new cinematic venture set in the sprawling world of Middle-earth.
Titled The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum, this upcoming film boasts Andy Serkis, the actor who indelibly embodied Gollum in Peter Jackson's iconic trilogy, at the helm.
Serkis will not only lend his directorial vision to the project but will also reprise his critically acclaimed role as the enigmatic creature burdened by the One Ring.
Tumblr media
While plot specifics are yet to be revealed, the title suggests a narrative exploration of the previously unseen period between The Hobbit and The Fellowship of the Ring.
This crucial timeframe saw Gandalf the Grey embarking on a relentless quest to locate Gollum, whose fate was inextricably linked to the Ring's ultimate destiny.
Further bolstering the production is the return of Peter Jackson as a producer, alongside his esteemed collaborators Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens.
Tumblr media
Their collective expertise promises to deliver a film that both honors the legacy of the original trilogy and offers fresh insights into Tolkien's captivating universe.
Currently in the early stages of development with a script in the works, The Hunt for Gollum is slated for a 2026 release.
Tolkien fans can be assured that further information regarding this highly anticipated chapter in the Middle-earth saga will be forthcoming.

absolutely despicable behavior from WB to plunder a fan film from 15 years ago just because their corporate greed led them to want to make their own (likely soulless even with PJ’s involvement) version with the exact same title.
Tumblr media
UPDATE: the copyright has been released and the fan film The Hunt for Gollum is back on YouTube and can be watched. Though, it's still really telling of the capitalist corruption of WB and Hollywood that their first move and publicity for this (unnecessary) movie was to directly attack the fans for something produced over a decade ago.

Inspired by the Hunt for Gollum 2 day fiasco (I suppose it wasn't really a fiasco, genuinely happy they came to such a quick resolution, I will give it to them), I noticed a bunch of people said they'd never heard of the Hunt for Gollum fanfilm and was surprised! So here are some more tolkien fan films on youtube that you can watch right now! A friend of mine coalated all of these for our server and we binged them all, which was a really great time and I would heartily recommend.
Obviously, first; The Hunt for Gollum, a 40min shortfilm pretty much entirely about Aragorn, you guessed it, hunting gollum. But there's also a few neat interactions with other characters too and the production is of an extremely good quality for what it is.
Then you have Born of Hope, from the same company as hunt for gollum, this one focuses more on Arathorn and Gilraen's relationship and Aragorn's tumultuous birth. It's very depressing but I also really liked the casting of Arathorn and is worth a watch.
Horn of Gondor is a short 20min fanfilm with a pretty inventive premise, focusing on Borondir's in-universe fabled ride to deliver Steward Cirion's request for an alliance with the ancestral rohirrim to Eorl their king, thereby saving Gondor from defeat. I find it a little lacklustre and it doesnt really measure up to it's concept but the attempt is still admirable and there is some real and clear passion behind it so still worth a watch.
Wings Over Arda is, gonna be honest, my favourite one of the lot. It is an hour long and extremely ambitiously attempts to feature events from Tuor's meeting with Ulmo, to the attack of the Sons of Feanor upon Doriath. It essentially fails to live up to the auspicousness of any of these things, but it is EXTREMELY earnest and the casting for Dior in particular is now just burned into my brain. It feels kind of like it was made in the 1980s too which I just love for a film that came out 2 years ago. It's really fun, give it a go.
One of the Seven is more of a hobbit movie fanfilm, referencing PJ's Thranduil backstory of losing his wife and the hunt for her jewels, but also involving dwarves and elves bickering over unspecified rings. It has the brightest colour pallette of all the films which is a visual relief and all the costumes are really detailed, mainly because I suspect this was made my cosplayers who just had some time on their hands. It's fun and campy and only 25mins so fully digestable, even if it's a little dwarf-ist.
Lastly there's The Peril to the Shire, even though cards on the table I have not watched this one. It is three hours long and was made by a bunch of homeschooled children somewhere, featuring entirely child actors and about Rosie Cotten defending the Shire pre-scouring. From what I've seen, the kids are having a great time doing it, but the audio is also really hard to hear clearly so this is more of a challenge than a suggestion.

Let’s be real: the greatest miracle in the history of Middle-earth was the fact that Aragorn’s sanity survived walking over 1000 miles with only Gollum for company.

Viggo , Hunt for Gollum
Viggo said initially that he will return if it makes sense. he expressed concern over his age right off the bat.
but Orlando Bloom talked to Serkis about the age thing too and Serkis said he'd use AI to de-age actors.
i dont know Viggos stance on that so its all up in the air at this point
I'm hoping if Viggo isn't okay with AI that Serkis and the others would accommodate him and use cgi instead, like they did with Ian Holmes in the Hobbit.
if he says NO, they'd probably pick someone that looks similar to Viggo. I was looking up celebrity look-alikes, some people think Viggo Mortensen and Andrew Lincoln from Walking Dead look alike haha
I can kind of see it. kind of
Tumblr media
But I really think the team should just do whatever they have to do to get Viggo to say Yes haha
or just base the entire movie on Gollum alone

Is anyone claiming that it is? Rings of Power is currently the number one show on Amazon. No one’s saying it was bigger than Fallout, which was the number one show in Amazon when it was released. Also need to add some context to those numbers. That 65 million was based on 16 days and 8 episodes as Fallout dropped its entire season in one go. Rings of Power's 40 million is based on 11 days and only 4 episodes as it releasing weekly. Fallout's 11 day total would've been something like 44 million, still ahead of Rings of Power, but not massively and again that's because it had more episode available to watch. Of course, the only source we have on this is Amazon itself. As with all streamers we need to take what they say with a pinch of salt. You can never really be sure what is and isn't a success with them. Even cancellation isn't a sure sign of failure because they will axe a hit show just to save money and avoid wage increases for cast and crew.

Listen I was somewhat excited about the animated Rohan movie
I am not excited about the Gollum movie, because I have a feeling it’s just going to be “Everything that was bad about The Hobbit movies but amplify it by eleven”
Anyways if you haven’t already watched the 2009 fan film, “The Hunt for Gollum”, then check that out it’s a banger

I know there's still a lot of time... But I wonder... How Andy Serkis & Peter Jackson will lead the plot and the character of Gollum in "The Hunt for Gollum"? They both did an excellent work with Him in the Trylogy!
The Cursed/Fallen Hobbit is one of the most fascinating characters in Tolkien's legendarium.
In "The Lord of the Rings" we can see a huge difference between two different hobbits: Smeagol and Bilbo.
For Bilbo, the golden disc is basically a "cool gadget". A toy, used - I suspect - mainly for pranks. 😉 Or to hide so that he won't be disturbed by ppl when he needs it. In "The Fellowship of the Ring" Bilbo hums happily to himself, being invisible. The One Ring accompanied the Hobbit from Shire for many years, and "didn't do anything" to him...It gave him a very long life in return. Long enough that Bilbo started to get bored. He stopped enjoying it. [At least, his existence in Middle-earth.] Because we know that Valinor is a whole different story. 😉
I'll move on to the second Hobbit though.
Smeagol was ready to kill his friend for The One Ring, the very moment he saw it... Charmed by the beautiful object and the power of its Creator, he committed the crime.
This murder caused great suffering, and split his self in two. Next to the "good" Smeagol, appeared the "bad"- Gollum...
"They" - the two selves of the Hobbit; corrupted by his own darkness and greed, love and hate each other at the same time.
However, both love the "One Ring" above all else. [Or Sauron himself, who "is" the One Ring. Showrunners of Rings of Power admitted that already.] It became an absolute obsession for them. They only think about It. They only need It.
The One Ring stayed with "them" for 500 years. When Smeagol/Gollum loses it; Sauron orders to torture the crature to reveal who has it. Gollum talks the truth about Bilbo. And then Sauron orders his orcs to let the unfortunate Hobbit go free. The Dark Lord showed mercy to a creature that seemed so tiny, insignificant and miserable...
One creature, Gollum; that everyone is disgusted by. One that everyone is afraid to look at. One that the Lord of Darkness shouldn't even pay attention to. And here you go. Sauron, at the end of his corrupt and unimaginably long life, STILL CARE that such a Gollum lives and is free... Maybe this will annoy someone, but I like noticing such "little things"/flashes of light in "The Monster Called Sauron."
P.S. I think he liked it when Smeagol/Gollum adored him. They petted him, called him "My Precious"... 😉
PPS. I wonder if Sauron will appear in some form in "The Hunt for Gollum". I would really like to.
I won't get my hopes up for Charlie, but... heh. They don't punish for dreaming. "Not Yet". 😉

Had some more thoughts about the new LOTR movie "The Hunt for Gollum" and which characters are likely in it besides him. Putting this behind a cut for spoilers, though if you read the books and/or watched the fan film of the same name on YT you'll know a few. That being said I do think they'll expand this with more plots and add more characters both from the movies and the books, also since this is just the first of at least 2 new movies coming. I've also included a fancast here for 2 roles I hope are finally cast for this and weren't in the movies.
First is Aragorn. He's a major part of this and likely will be one of the main characters that carries over into the 2nd of these new films. Highly doubt it'd be a de-aged Viggo so we're likely going to get a younger British actor here. It's hard to fancast since we don't know the age range they'll be looking for, but something tells me it'll be a 30something actor especially with how many of these movies they're planning. Did see a fan suggest that Viggo can play older Aragorn telling this story to his children, so we'd get 2 Aragorns connecting it which I like.
Arwen is next. She wasn't in the story, but we know her and Aragorn's relationship began around the same time. There's been rumors these movies were going to feature younger versions of the characters last year, so this fits too. Plus, they need a female lead and their romance is one of the popular ships. Like above I think they'll cast a younger actress that resembles Liv, but like the fan suggested Liv could also play older Arwen.
If it sticks to the story Gandalf will be in this too as he tasks Aragon with finding Gollum. Now I can see Ian agreeing to having himself de-aged for this but not sure if they need that as I don't think he looks that different. The story is more about Gollum and Aragorn, so he'd be in a few scenes.
Next is Legolas. He's in the story too and would show more about his and Aragorn's friendship. Would be interesting if Orlando would come back too as I think he'd be ok with getting de-aged too but only slightly for him as he just looks a bit older.
Then this could be where we finally get Arwen's twin brothers Elladan and Elrohir!!! 😀 A lot of us always wanted them in the movies and it is strange they were cut out (though some think they are in the background of a few scenes). They're close friends of Aragorn too and easily could assist him in this. This is where my fancast comes in as both Harris Dickinson and George Mackay popped in my head to play them. Both are talented rising British actors, have dark hair and blue eyes, are tall, and I think look like Liv's Arwen, as well as the movies' Elrond, Galadriel, and Celeborn to look related to them. Also, Harris and George get confused for each other a lot (and played the same character as Harris couldn't be in the feature film version of "Femme", which he did the short film, and the recast him with George) and some thought they were brothers. They could just get one of them to play both if they want identical, but some fans think they're fraternal but do still resemble each other so two actors who look alike work too.
Then if Elrond, Galadriel (I'm certain Cate could still play her), Celeborn, or anyone else from the original LOTR movies are in this, or other characters from the books they could also add that weren't like Glorfindel for one.
Finally Sauron. There's a part of this story where Gollum is taken and Sauron himself tortures him to find out where the ring is. Gollum even explains he saw Sauron in full form and that he was missing a finger and spoke to him. So will they get Benedict Cumberbatch back to voice Sauron and/or actually play him in live-action as so far only "Rings of Power" have had an actor playing where you can see his face.
