French Girl Style - May's Style Not Age
Happy Monday! It’s a Bank Holiday here in the UK, however, I’m working. When you’re freelance Bank Holidays don’t really exist! And as it’s the last Monday of the month it’s time for May’s Style Not Age challenge. It was Gail’s turn to set the theme this time and she chose French Girl Style. Immediately I thought of black, blazers and a general casual chic vibe. I’m sure styles vary a lot across…

THE BEST-DRESSED MEN IN 2021
You really can not call this year's menswear a snoozer, could you? Looking back, it was undoubtedly one of the most varied, colorful, and expressive periods we've had in a long time. Clothes were once again enjoyable. Men's fashion was erratic and inconsistent. People relinquish control. Men gained self-assurance. Slim-fit minimalism has been pushed out.
For the typical guy, it all boils down to this: choices. There are more of them than we've seen in a long time. This might be the fascinating period in men's fashion history, if not all time. And in a year in which most changes were off, these 25 best-dressed guys. They were there to show us how it's done! Whether they were setting trends, breaking the rules, or sticking to the classics. Their message was clear: wear whatever the heck you want, and do it with a grin on your face.
ZAC EFRON
Zac Efron's hair had almost as much of a year as he did. Efron grabbed our attention even before his portrayal as serial murderer Ted Bundy had everyone talking when he wore a bright white bleach at the start of the year. You can afford to bring liberties with your design aesthetic when you're this ridiculously good-looking, but what we appreciate about Efron's style is that it's not at all try-hard. Zac Efron leather jacket, shearling coats, and slim-fit two-pieces are among his favorites. There's a lot of innovation in menswear right now, which is fantastic, but here's a reminder that the old ones are still the best for a lot of people.
RAMI MALEK
Oscar-winner, Bond villain, is a fashion icon. Being Rami Malek must be a nightmare. Malek's wardrobe is a lot more refined off-screen than it was in his debut role in Mr. Robot when he wore hoodies. He pairs inch-perfect tailoring with a few dramatic details that wouldn't be out of place in Mick Jagger's stage outfit. Consider patterned shirts or a velvet blazer on rare occasions.
There's a certain degree of swagger here, but it's possible that some of his self-assurance comes from the fact that he anchors whatever he wears with essentials like black tailored pants. And there's the fact that he's Rami Malek.
BRAD PITT
The funny thing is, Tyler Durden has a lot more style than Brad Pitt. Pitt is a fashion icon, but when he's not dressed up in a tuxedo, he's casual and - how should we describe it? – artistically untidy. It works because a) he's unquestionably attractive, and b) his several fashionable roles contribute to his megawatt character.
Despite this, he looked fantastic this year, both on and off the screen. Quentin Tarantino donned a lot of 60s and 70s clothes in Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, including double denim, vintage T-shirts, leather jackets, and Hawaiian shirts.
DAVID BECKHAM
After minor hitches in the noughties, David Beckham has fully matured into a veteran master of menswear in this decade, and 2019 was a monument to Goldenballs' constancy, with (to our knowledge) not a single foot out of place.
We've had an unending list of complimenting haircuts and the occasional addition to Mr. Beckham's already large collection of tattoos, and he's come out smelling like a rose. For us, Beckham was at his best at Wimbledon this year, and it's no exaggeration to suggest that the rest of the crowd particularly in comparison. But, as he usually does, he shone in smarter casuals like suede bombers and Dior's boundary-pushing tailoring. He hasn't lost it yet.
SHAWN MENDES
What had you accomplished by the age of 23? Shawn Mendes, a singer-songwriter, has three US number-one albums under his belt by the age of 25, all while developing a flawless modern rock and roll style that pays homage to the past while being contemporary.
His forte is slim-fitting monochrome tailoring, which he finishes with a pair of Chelsea boots and rock star bling. His favorite brands are Parisian labels Saint Laurent and The Kooples. Both of which have the slim-fitting monochrome style that has turned the squeaky clean pop idol into one of menswear's classiest figures.

The Fashion Of Sex And The City Meets Gossip Girl In Emily In Paris
If Sex and the City were filmed today, its fashion would look a lot like that of Emily in Paris. It might be an easy comparison to make, given that both the creator, Darren Star, and the costume designer, the legendary Patricia Field, are behind Netflix’s newest show, but its nods to the late ‘90s/early ‘00s HBO show are subtle enough to entice fashion-loving viewers who’ve never seen an episode, and absolutely delight those who watched every single one (many times over).
Emily in Paris follows 20-something Emily (played by the newly engaged Lily Collins), a Chicago marketing executive who gets sent to Paris for a year when her company acquires a French luxury marketing company that needs (but doesn’t want) help with their social media strategy. From the start, there is no doubt that Emily, much like Collins in real-life, watched Sex and the City as a young woman, and was inspired by Carrie Bradshaw’s unapologetically over-the-top style. In the most obvious example, in episode 2, Emily wears an Alexandre Vauthier strapless top with a black tulle skirt, an homage to Carrie’s tulle skirt in the series finale of Sex and the City, which also takes place in Paris. In another, she dons earrings that say “Emily” in cursive, a nod, of course, to Bradshaw’s famous “Carrie” necklace.
There are more sly references, like Emily’s love for kitschy prints and accessories that would look gaudy on anyone who’s less fearless when it comes to fashion. When she shows up for her first day at work in Paris in an Alice + Olivia blouse depicting the Eiffel Tower — paired no less with Christian Louboutin heels that say “Paris” — it’s so on-the-nose that she gets looked down on by her new boss Sylvie (Philippine Leroy Beaulieu) whose quintessentially Parisian all-black looks are, no doubt, plucked from the runways of Rick Owens and Yamamoto. (This type of cold assessment repeats when a haute couture fashion designer calls Emily the French equivalent of a “basic bitch” for wearing an Eiffel Tower charm on her handbag later in the season. Harsh!)
But Sex and the City isn’t the only inspiration for the Emily in Paris fashion. Field, who came up with the looks in collaboration with French costume designer Marylin Fitoussi, also took a lot of inspiration from the 1951 movie An American in Paris. For a night in the opera, Collins wears an exquisite strapless gown look paired with full-length gloves, an elegant nod to Audrey Hepburn in Funny Face.
The labels featured on Emily in Paris read like a list of brands on fashion-forward retailers like Farfetch, Luisa Via Roma, and Net-A-Porter. They range from more affordable contemporary French favourites like Maje, Sandro, and The Kooples to French luxury powerhouses like Chanel, Christian Louboutin, Dior, and Kenzo. The show also features looks from decidedly American designers like Christian Siriano (who is behind the opera dress) and Off-White’s Virgil Abloh (a clever wink given that both Emily and Abloh have ties to Chicago), as well as clothing that looks newly acquired by Emily in Paris — unless I am the only one who has a hard time finding adult-size Aigle rain boots in the US.
Like with Carrie, it’s unclear how Emily can afford so many designer clothes. Though it’s not discussed how much money Emily makes, it’s still hard to believe that a young professional who ships peanut butter to Paris and gets put up in an apartment that the rental agent describes as “a room for the housekeeper” can pay for a wardrobe made of numerous Chanel jackets and handbags and a Christian Louboutin collection that could rival Blake Lively’s.
Speaking of the Gossip Girl star, there’s definitely traces of the late-‘00s show, about Upper East Side high school students, present, too. (This makes sense as Emily admits to watching it in the series.) While Emily doesn’t have Blair Waldorf’s love for all things preppy, there are traces of Queen B in the green Chanel jacket she wears to an influencer lunch, and in her plaid skirts. There is also Emily’s penchant for hats — classic French berets (I imagine Emily bought them specifically for Paris), Kangol bucket hats, and beanies all make an appearance! — and bold outerwear that includes brightly coloured coats that look to be made out of cashmere, as well as statement jackets.
What’s most interesting about the fashion in Emily in Paris is that, while Emily does undergo a style transformation over the course of the show, it’s not as obvious as those we’ve come to expect from fashion films like The Devil Wears Prada, featuring a young woman trying to fit into an industry that tries vehemently to keep her out. Instead of transforming herself with a makeover to gain inroads into an exclusive circle, Emily instead continues to wear kitschy prints and quirky accessories — a look that prompts Mindy (Ashley Park) to say that she “look[s] American” upon first meeting her.
But, as the 10-episode show goes on, though Emily begins to adopt a more French aesthetic, which includes a muted colour palette and timeless silhouettes, she still keeps mixing it with her own clothes for looks uniquely her own. The result? Standout style that would make Carrie Bradshaw proud.
Like what you see? How about some more R29 goodness, right here?

A Classic Outfit For a Classic Watch + Style With a Smile Link Up
Hello friends, I hope you’re week is going well. We have milder weather currently after a few very cold days. I managed to slip over on the ice last week and bash my knee…landing face down in the gutter at 8am was not a dignified way to start the day! However, it ended on a much better note with a win at the local Christmas quiz night! Thankfully my team mates have a good knowledge of films…

6 Style Tribes That Will Change The Way You Dress Next Year
Blame Instagram, blame the dizzying fashion cycle, but it seems our subcultures never seem to hang around that long any more. So as we bid bye-bye to the post-Soviets, in-and-out in less time than it took to dismantle the Berlin Wall, we welcome six new looks to bite right now.
Elbowing their way into the zeitgeist, these style tribes aren’t just overpowering your Instagram feed, they’re turning the heads of designers. Their looks are filtering into luxury and high street collections alike. They’re all over pop culture, and soon they’re likely to find their way into your wardrobe in one way or another.
Ametora
What is it? As detailed in W David Marx’s excellent book of the same name, ‘Ametora’ is the Japanese contraction of ‘American Traditional’. Initially, it meant the Ivy League style that Japanese teenagers co-opted in the 1960s, but now includes all the classic Americana that was first copied in Japan, then improved, then perfected. With Hawaiian shirts trending last summer, this is an evolution of that mid-century aesthetic, being referenced in spring next year by high street labels.
How To Wear It
Ametora is the way that Japanese designers recreate American style in their own way, from cowboys to bikers and even hip-hop. But the most obvious way into the look is artisanal reworkings of things like denim, workwear, unstructured blazers and knits. “Stick to a classic colour palette of neutral tan, deep brown and navy, with the introduction of colour through printed shirts, ties and scarves,” says stylist Toby Standing, from personalised menswear shop Thread.”Mix up your textures and definitely invest in some wide, selvedge jeans.”
Key Brands
Japan’s select stores were the first to bring the American look over, and Beams is still a stronghold for Ametora. As far as denim goes, perhaps no brand cares more – or costs more – than Visvim, which somehow makes Western-inspired jeans that feel more authentic than the real thing. If you’re more into the Ivy League look, then Osaka’s Ring Jacket has been there since the beginning.
Grown-up Skater
The guys that championed skatewear in the mid-’90s are now approaching 40. At least. Time to grow up, then, without trading in your identity. Perhaps as a reaction to all those hype-fuelled streetwear brands, the new generation (which is actually the previous generation) is creating prep-influenced clothes that you could wear for a quick mini-ramp session on the way to dinner at your in-laws.
How To Wear It
Not head-to-toe logos. “Fit is the key component here,” says Standing. In this more mature world, there’s no reason the timeless skater uniform of baggy Dickies and a hoodie can’t be finished with a soft-shouldered blazer, or a chunky knit.
Key Brands
Doing skate right isn’t about being first outside Palace any more. For one, all those logos are starting to feel a bit inauthentic. Instead, look to older heads, like Brendon Babenzien, who left his gig as creative director of Supreme to found Noah, which features loose tailoring alongside its logo hoodies and Aprix, which does smart-ish skate shoes. Fellow New York brand Aimé Leon Dore also does a neat spin on grown-up streetwear – think rugby shirts and cable-knit cardigans – while Awake NY has you covered for legal-drinking-age takes on graphic prints.
War Core
Depending on your level of cynicism, this man-the-barricades-inspired trend is either designers reflecting a collapsing society back at us, or the worst kind of exploitation. Think tactical vests, belts with buckles borrowed from helicopter gunships, and in one instance, an actual riot shield. Well, it’ll help on drop day.
How To Wear It
Going all-in on your war core look can quickly start to feel a touch prepper. So apply the military touches lightly. “It’s all about technical and tactical items finding their way into everyday outfits,” says Standing. Cross-body bags and mesh vests are the more obvious ways in, but anything ripstop or covered in pockets, poppers and heavy buckles taps the trend, too. “It’s function and form, which also means it’s not adventurous in colour.” Think dark greys and khakis, with the odd bit of black and beige.
Key Brands
As a look inspired by the streets, it’s appropriate that streetwear brands would lead the charge. The key one is Alyx, whose rollercoaster belts have become something of a sensation – Kim Jones even tapped its founder Matthew Williams to craft a special version for his debut show at Dior. Williams is a former Kanye acolyte, around whom you’ll find this trend concentrated (he’s been doing the combat kit thing with Yeezus for a few years now, after all). At Heron Preston, that means flak jackets, whereas for Off-White and now Louis Vuitton boss Virgil Abloh, it gets more literal with berets and paratrooper trousers.
British Heritage
This look has been around for a while. As in, a century and some, based as it is on Industrial-era workwear, chunky knits and boots you can drop bits of tractor on without coming a cropper. Not so long ago, British heritage fashion was about tweed jackets, brogues and countryside aesthetics. Now, perhaps taking a cue from the popularity of American workwear, this very rugged approach to utility fashion.
How To Wear It
The heritage look’s been big for close to a decade now in one form or another, originally as a reaction to how soft modern life had got. Freed from suits, creative types began dressing like old factory workers in an effort to grasp hold of something that felt authentic. Which translated as time-tested materials designed to protect you from elements and machinery, but which as a bonus all look quite sharp in a Shoreditch content agency. “A dark waxed outer layer, like a Barbour field jacket, with some dark denim, leather work boots and textured knitwear can be your go-to for a great British look,” says Standing.
Key Brands
Ideally, you want to pick up pieces from labels who’ve got some history under the belt. Barbour’s been making its waxed jackets in South Shields for a century, fellow motorcycle specialist Belstaff still makes some of the best leathers anywhere, while for footwear you can take your pick of any Northampton brand. We’d go Grenson for something with a modern twist, or Loake if you like to keep things classic.
Modern Rocker
Guitar music might be struggling in the charts, but its look is about as easy to kill as Keith Richards. Look to Michigan rockers Greta Van Fleet, with their musty-looking mix of leather and denim, or Atlantans the Black Lips, for something a touch muckier. Or keep an eye on Hedi Slimane (the guy who made skinny jeans a thing), back making rock n roll menswear at Celine after leaving Saint Laurent in 2016.
How To Wear It
Skin, attitude, a flagrant disregard for what parents think looks good. In other words, everything that’s always made rock ‘n’ roll unique. “It’s a kind of modern evolution of what Steven Tyler was wearing in Aerosmith,” says Standing. “Loose, printed shirts, unbuttoned perhaps too far, with skin-tight black jeans and a pair of worn-in Chelsea boots. Swap the shirt for a faded band tee if you’re not feeling particularly pirate-y.”
Key Brands
It can be expensive to look this trashy – Saint Laurent still has that Slimane DNA, and his first collection at Celine will drop soon. Then you have brands that never quit the rockstar aesthetic like The Kooples or AllSaints on the high street. But really, vintage is best. You want everything you wear to look like it’s been on the road a few times, so try to find leather jackets and skinny jeans that actually have.
K-Pop
The mashed-up, anything goes aesthetic favoured by Korea’s zeitgeist-y pop stars, who espouse a similarly genre-agnostic approach to music, is less a look and more a mindset. More is more, trends are fleeting but to be embraced wholesale, individuality is all, although ideally in a way that shows you get groupthink. In the mix here there’s preppy fashion, unstructured tailoring, big-brand streetwear and some ’80s denim for good measure.
How To Wear It
Do you avoid the limelight? Does having your photo taken make you uncomfortable? Do you think three belts is too many belts? Then K-pop fashion may not be for you. “It’s a real mix of high-end brands and trends,” says Standing. “You want to be adorned in the latest silhouettes, with the latest sneakers and extraordinary hair.”
Key Brands
K-pop is as much about Balenciaga as it is Palace, but if you’re hitting a nice high-low contrast in one look, you should be good. For authenticity, look to mix in some actual Korean brands: Ader Error has been labelled as Seoul’s Vetements, for its collective approach to design and ugly-is-beautiful spin on streetwear; 87mm specialises in slouchy, off-duty staples like puffers and fleeces; and Thisisneverthat is basically a homegrown spin on Supreme, ideal for where’d-you-get-that? accessories.
