One thing I think I just realized is, in addition to being dissatisfied with how stories deal with Toriel’s grief compared to Asgore’s and Asriel’s, and how I don’t see many instances of Toriel and Asgore’s quarrel being addressed in a way that satisfied me... I don’t think I see that many AUs that quite get the responsibility Asgore feels... right.
Yes, I’ve seen several that portray his grief, depression, and how badly he doesn’t want to be in this position well, even if it’s disappointing how not everyone seems to be aware of what you learn about him in a Neutral run where you’ve previously killed Flowey. A lot of people can get aspects of his characterization very well, the broken man, the goofy dad, the intimidating monarch. But I think the reason I don’t see people capture the weight of his responsibility quite as well in fanfics and comics is... well. Oddly enough it’s in the way the monsters treat him.
It’s not just the fandom that has issues with idolizing or demonizing characters. It’s also the Kingdom of Monsters themselves--and they all idolize Asgore. Yes, he’s a very grounded and compassionate individual who invites his subjects to share all their problems with him, and who Papyrus insists will just let you pass through the Barrier. But he’s also a bit of the subject of a cult of personality for his subjects. When they say he’ll absorb seven souls and become a GOD, it’s not an expression of his arrogance, but rather their own adoration. While out-of-universe the Angel is generally agreed to be either Asriel or Chara(or us), in-universe I wouldn’t be surprised if Asgore was considered the Angel.
It’s not long now. King Asgore will let us go. King Asgore will give us hope. King Asgore will save us all.
Yes, individual monsters may want to collect a human soul for their own individual wants and desires. But it’s only the capture of a human soul, or using a single soul for their own benefit, that they really aspire to. (With the exception of Toriel, who wants no souls, and Flowey, who is Flowey.) Of those area bosses who earnestly try to take just one soul, Papyrus and Undyne both want to hand you over to Asgore, and Mettaton wants to protect humanity FROM Asgore. Literally everyone in the Underground seems to fully believe that Asgore will be the one taking all the Souls and fulfilling his promises, and all are content. (Again, barring Toriel, MTT, Flowey.) No one seems to ever doubt he’ll do as he says, even his ex-wife, and no one’s greedy to take the power for themselves or take the burden of being a savior for themself, except his kid who has both a God Complex and a Savior Complex.
With Chara, and with Asgore. They take a person and turn them into a representation of something More than any singular person could ever be. And then in the worst route Chara does it again, to themself. Asgore is freedom and salvation and retribution itself, and everyone including the woman who was once married to him agrees and reinforces the role. Chara is the feeling of a number going up, and the fandom agrees and reinforces the role.
And I dunno. There are fics and AUs where Asgore never lost his kids and always remained an affable, friendly guy. There are AUs where Asgore is the main antagonist and an awful villain with few redeeming qualities. There are fics and AUs where Asgore gets to recover in a post-pacifist setting. But I’m not sure any fics or AUs have ever quite captured how everyone else just talks about the guy, for me. Toriel is simply ‘intimidating’. But Asgore is a GOD.

The thing that is so fascinating about undertale is the fact that sans and papyrus are so extremely popular that I have seen multiple people state that whatever happens in deltarune they hope sans and papyrus are barely relevant in the story, not because they dislike the characters but because everything is ALWAYS about them, they get too much attention and they don’t want more of that here and okay here is the thing, both agree and disagree, but it’s extremely fascinating because in the actual game sans and papyrus get to do way less than you’d think. Let me explain
Sans and Papyrus, especially Sans, get an immense amount of attention in fan content to the point where any other character in this game gets ignored and as a big fan of this two I want ALL the characters in UT to be relevant in fan content and in canon content not just the brothers so I completely understand when people say ‘not everything is about them and not every theory should have to do with them’, absolutely! You’re right about that, I agree
The other thing is that Deltarune is primarily about new characters not UT, so a lot of people think it wouldn’t make any sense for them to really have any relevant role here. I can… disagree with this a bit more, I definitely think Kris, Susie, Noelle, Ralsei, etc are the center of the story, main characters, this story is about them and they are not going to be sidelined by an undertale character but it’s hard to believe none of the undertale characters are going to have any role whatsoever in this game. Two chapters in the game they haven’t had any big role but it REALLY seems Toriel might get one in chapter 3 and that makes it extremely likely that the other UT characters will have their own role in this story other than talking to them in hometown after you’re done with the darkworld of the day and this includes Sans and Papyrus of course
And now for Undertale itself….. Sans and Papyrus are very beloved for being really funny in a pacifist run and for being sad and mysterious in a no mercy run. But here is the thing… papyrus goes through a very small character arc and his character doesn’t really get that much of a strong emotional moment in the pacifist run while every other main character does, one of the reasons why a lot of people see him as a comic relief and nothing much else is because the game itself doesn’t actually give him as much story relevance as you’d think. Sans has his big moment in the no mercy run and he does have strong emotional moments in pacifist (talking about toriel and the last corridor scene) but Sans shows up very few times in this game he could almost be a secondary character, Mettaton plays a more upfront role than he does (still sad that Mettaton is not included in the lost souls part…) and you barely get to know him. In a way we help him just like we help the rest of the cast but it still feels like there should be more. It feels like both of their stories are a bit… incomplete? Believe it or not if any of the main UT characters could have any more story is the two of them because there is still a lot you can do with these two characters (ESPECIALLY papyrus, and I’m not just saying this because he’s my favorite but also yes I am)
I’m not saying they don’t have their impact in undertale or they are going to be MAIN CHARACTERS in deltarune but to imply that everything is always about them so they shouldn’t be relevant in deltarune is just…… no, that’s fandom stuff, they definitely still need more focus on canon stuff

that being said I get why they didn’t do this it would be hard as fuck to implement lol. while the undertale cast are all pretty close to each other before the game in one way or another, the undertale yellow characters 4 the most part don’t even know each other until clover comes along
The uty neutral ending being an automatic reset doesn’t allow for this but. I’m imagining an equivalent to the phone call at the end of undertales neutrals, letters/mail or something perhaps. I wanna know how they’re doing.

*Asgore's trident sits heavy in your hands.
*How many of the children died to this weapon?
*You decide not to dwell on it.
*For you, and your brother decided humans can't be judged to be all good or all bad.
*This is your new law, and you will uphold it.
*There's no more use for a weapon like this.
*Even if the sacrifices the late King made were for the best interest of the Underground.
*...Perhaps a museum will accept this as a donation.

I recently decided to add an Asgore to my AU because I think he's a really interesting and deep character that kiiiind'a gets clowned on a lot.. <XD I wanted to do him justice by bringing out what I like most about his character and overall vibe :}}
This was originally going to be in a post with like 6 other drawings. But I was so proud of how it came out that I wanted to post it by itself. :}}}}
His temporary lore/backstory is after the keep reading! :D
Asgore's story is a bit vague.. but I'm thinking he's in a similar situation to River Person and Grillby. He cant go back to his AU and is full of grief about it..
I know his AU wont be like classic Undertale. Maybe in his AU they were sent underground much later? Or not at all? Chara and Asriel could be older.. who knows. But I'm thinking that at some point.. while being married to Toriel and having both Chara and Asriel, he had to go to war.
He told his wife and kids that he loved them very much. He said goodbye to them and went to war.. In which he was later killed.. Somehow Jevil and his gang passing through, ripped his soul out of his AU and into the multiverse. In doing this his crown was left behind and he was prevented from fully turning into dust somehow..
If he were to return to his AU, he would just continue turning into dust and die. So he cannot return.
Now unlike Grillby or River Person, Asgore is able to cope with this situation a bit better than them.
He was able to say goodbye to his family before he died. And the last thing he said to them was that he loved them. He died protecting his people, and his sacrifice in battle is ultimately what led to their victory. His family will be full of grief, but they have his crown to remember him by. And Toriel is a very strong woman. He has no doubt that she has enough love in her soul for the both of them. And will raise their kids into strong and mature individuals without his help.
He is still grieving the fact that he will never see his family again, of course. But knowing that his family is still alive and will continue to thrive and live despite his absence.. its comforting really.
Asgore is now permamntly in a state of dusting, but not really..? He is made of dust but he is still very powerful. It doesn't seem like him dusting has effected his magic too much.. he's not really sure <XD
Since he no longer has his crown, he has blatantly just said "I am no king, not anymore." He now kind'a acts as the groups body guard. Also unlike Grillby, he is thankful that Jevil saved him. If Jevil hadn't accidentally interfered, Asgore would have just died anyway and never knew if his family was safe or if they had won the battle or not.
I have other ideas of Asgore being this really tender character, and devoting himself to protecting his "new family". I imagined him helping Grillby move on and cope with his grief.. and if he can still heal monsters/darkners.. I imagine him healing Seam and Spamton to ease them of their pain.. Even if its only temporarily relief. I like to think that he is this rock that the others can lean on.
All in all, this Asgore is a pretty neat dude. He's their friend now, they're having soft tacos later! :}

What is UnderLove?
"UnderLove" is an AU created by Radicalrainbow, based on the renowned role-playing game Undertale. In the universe of UnderLove, the struggle between love and hate shapes its story. It introduces a unique twist with love-centric magic and the contrasting power of hate. Characters’ appearances are heart-themed, adorned in shades of pinks, reds, and whites, with frilly trims, fluffy details, and prominent heart motifs embracing a Valentine's/Lovecore theme. Yet, this AU can show more than just one side of the coin.
Tumblr media
Underlove's history
History of the Underground: Long ago, humans and monsters lived separately and in disarray upon the surface. Humans were known for their ruthlessness, hostility, and HATE, which led them to push the kind and loving monsters away.
Tragedy struck one night when the king’s life was brutally taken, leading Asgore to ascend to the throne. Blinded by his own growing anger, Asgore sought to avenge his father, and the once kind and loving monsters turned hostile as war was declared against the humans.
The war raged on, with magic clashing and bodies falling. Eventually, humans emerged victorious, and with the help of a powerful mage, they sealed the monsters underground. The Underground was filled with despair and darkness, but the magic of LOVE gradually began to bloom again, restoring harmony among the monsters.
The royal family made certain that their people remained full of LOVE, fearing the resurgence of HATE that had swept the surface. Royal guards were tasked with protecting the Underground by preserving love and happiness, removing those who began to corrupt with hatred, and dealing with any humans who entered their realm.
Chara’s Arrival: After many years after banishment, their peace was interrupted when a human named Chara fell into their midst, seeking refuge from human cruelty. The Dreemurr family adopted Chara despite their initial wariness, it came to be the best decision of their lives as the two kids grew up together.
Tragically, Chara fell terminally ill from consuming red rose seeds, causing them to cough up petals and roses. Before the illness could fully silence them, Chara expressed a dying wish to see the surface sky one last time.
Asriel, their adoptive brother, absorbed Chara's soul and carried them through the barrier that separated their world from the humans. However, upon reaching the surface, they were met with misunderstanding and rage, resulting in the tragic demise of both Asriel and Chara.
The Dreemurr family, torn apart by the loss of their beloved children, decreed that any human who fell into their realm would be imprisoned in the depths of their castle dungeon.

About the older clover au wouldn't asgore know about this and tell the royal guard to look for clover or he just give up looking for them?
Tumblr media
I answered another ask about Asgore here, but to summarize, Asgore (and Undyne and the Royal Guard by extension) don't know with 100% certainty that there's a human living in secret in the Underground. After all, Martlet obviously didn't report Clover in when they decided to live there! There were rumors spread throughout the Underground, though, that a human child was briefly spotted before "disappearing", leading to an official Royal Guard investigation.
Asgore. of course, ordered an investigation into these rumors, but nothing turned up. So he continued to wait in his castle, assuming perhaps that the rumored human died alone somewhere or perhaps never existed. Clover and their family still remain vigilant, though, knowing that it'd take only one sighting or reporting of them for the Royal Guard to come and try and deliver their soul to the King....

Tumblr media
Everything was a mess, and it had been for a long time. The underground had never been a paradise, but it wasn’t always like this. The slow collapse into chaos had started with that human child—a little terror with a face too innocent for the damage they caused.
They’d kill, reset, and kill again. Each time, it felt worse. Worse for everyone. Monsters were beginning to lose what little hope they had left, and each reset took a piece of their minds along with it, even if they weren't fully sentient about it.
The final straw would be the permanent death of their king; Asgore, has been-long dusted. Undyne took over, fighting tooth and nail to keep things together but things went to hell even faster after that. Hunger gnawed at everyone’s sanity. Resources dwindled. Monsters were starving to the point of breaking down. And the people he deem were his friends, people he’d bonded with, had turned their backs on him, trying to rip the magic right out of his skull to fuel the Core. They figured that if they could power it again, things might go back to normal.
But it didn’t work.
And he snapped—and, OH, does he snap really, really hard. Sans obligated the source of the Core with his own hands, crushing any hope of fixing things. He nearly killed them. Alphys? Well, She was left with what could hardly be called a mind anymore, no longer the brilliant scientist she once was. He didn’t even feel bad about it. He should’ve, but there wasn’t much feeling left in him these days.
The underground became a twisted, hellish pit. Monsters clawed at each other for scraps. Most of them had gone mad with hunger, madness creeping into their bones like an old, painful infection. Sans was no different. He felt it too. It was always there, pushing at the edges of his mind, clawing, biting. He wanted to tear someting apart.
And then, out of nowhere, you appeared.
Another human, falling into their world, clueless, just like the ones before. But this time… this time was different. There was something about you that stopped him in his tracks when he first saw you stumbling out of Snowdin, disheveled but still intact. You looked like you didn’t belong there—and you didn’t, not in this cursed place—but you also looked perfect. And for reasons he couldn’t explain, it was like love at first sight.
Him? LOVE? It was ironic. He’d never had time for love, and especially not for humans. To him, humans were just sacks of meat waiting to be butchered. But you… you were different. Special. Oh, but unfortunately, you didn’t have the same power as them, no ability to reset when facing the death's door. You were fragile, small, and incredibly weak. A single slip, and you’d be gone for good.
He had to have you.
He’d done his usual schtick when he greeted you—whoopee cushion, a tired old trick he barely found funny anymore. But this time, when you reached to shake his hand, he didn’t immediately slice you in half like he normally would. He let you live. In fact, he stuck around to help you through your journey. Not because he particularly cared about your safety—okay, maybe he did—but because he wasn’t going to let anyone else get their hands on you. Especially not Undyne.
You were his.
And yeah, sure, he got it. You wanted to go home. Of course, you did. That was only natural. But you weren’t going anywhere. Not in this state. Did you really think you’d survive long enough to leave the Underground without him? The whole place was a hellhole now. Monsters would tear you apart the moment you stepped out of his sight. You had no power, no strength to fight back. He had saved your ass more times than you even realized.
So yeah, you're gonna stay. Like it or not.
You’d done the impossible. Somehow, through sheer will or dumb luck, you’d manage to make it all the way to the Queen’s chamber; Undyne. The door loomed in front of you, massive and foreboding. You weren’t sure what to expect when you stepped through, but you knew it wasn’t going to be easy. Pushing open the door, your breath caught in your throat. The scene before you was… horrific.
Blood. Dust. Carnage
The once-great hall was a massacre. The remains of royal guards littered the floor, bones skewered through their bodies like grotesque decorations. And standing at the far end of the room was him. Sans.
Before you could move, before you could react, he summoned bones beneath you, trapping you in a makeshift prison. You stumbled, falling into the pool of blood as you tried to free yourself, but it was no use. He was already in front of you.
“heh, thought you’d make it this far, huh?” Sans’s voice was light, almost teasing, as if he wasn’t holding the head of a dead woman in his hand. “gotta say, kid, you really surprised me.” You tried to stand, but the bones kept you pinned in place. You were trapped. The scent of blood and death filled your lungs, and you wanted to scream, but no sound came out.
You couldn’t even process his words. Your heart was hammering in your chest, the weight of the situation crashing down on you like a tidal wave. The blood soaked through your clothes, and you felt the cold, sticky liquid seep into your skin as Sans’s magic tightened around you. There was no escape. For fucks sake.
Sans crouched in front of you, dropping Undyne’s head beside him with a sickening thud. He grinned, though the smile didn’t reach his eyes. “it’s better this way, ya know? bein’ here, with me. this place… it’s a mess, sure, but i can keep ya safe. no one’s gonna hurt ya. not while i’m around.”
“well?” he asked, his voice still disturbingly light. “what’s it gonna be, kid? We don't have all day on this place. And plus, yer' all soaked up on blood, surely you must want a nice bath"

Undertale: Cooking with Kindness
Tumblr media
Undertale: Cooking with Kindness is a fan-game telling the story of Sunny, the green soul that fell many years before the story of Undertale. After encountering an ambitious moth monster named Luna, Sunny teams up with them to run what they hope will be the best restaurant the underground has ever seen. But the threat of King Asgore and his decree to take the soul of any human who dares make the mistake of falling into his kingdom looms closer and closer by the day.
Instead of fighting or sparing, you'll be cooking and serving for the monsters you encounter with gameplay a bit different than what you're accustomed to.

Why Papyrus is even in Undertale
And no, I'm not saying that he's not important. In fact, he's one of the most important plot devices. But why Papyrus ?
List of stuff Papyrus did for the plot :
Helped Frisk befriend Undyne
Gathered everyone in the Pacifist ending
Worldbuilding (phonecalls)
Characters' personalisation (phonecalls)
Told Frisk to go to the True Lab (phonecalls)
Basically the reason we were able to get the Pacifist ending
Quite a lot, but it all could be easily done by the others.
Befriending Undyne? Alphys. Being manipulated by Flowey? Monster kid. Info dumping on the phone? Sans.
Even among the main characters he seems a bit off.
Toriel is the caretaker of the ruins and former queen. Sans is the royal judge. Undyne is the capitan of the royal guard. Alphys is the royal scientist. Mettaton is the biggest star of the underground. Asgore is the king. Asriel (flowey) is the prince.
And Papyrus is… just some guy.
He could easily be a secondary character like Napstablook. Especially considering his lack of backstory, no character development and a skippable battle in which you can't even die.
But instead he has the biggest amount of words in the game, huge impact on the characters in all of the endings, very detaled hangout/date and a PERSONAL Q&A (also the entire Underale Q&A was centered around him).
What about Deltarune
Papyrus didn't show up in DR yet, but I can feel with my GUTS that he'll be important.
We all know that DR was in Toby's brain even before Undertale, and also we know that Bonetrousle was meant for DR.
Based on some theories about ch3, we can assume that the characters from UT actually might play some big roles in DR.
So… you can tell what I'm trying to say here, right? What if the reason why Papyrus is so important in the game AND in a lot of additional stuff is because he's going to play some role in DR and even have a character arc or be shown from unusual side.
Tumblr media
And this “busy” is hunting me 24/7. Too suspicious.

METTATONVS REX
After the king Asgore had been overthrown by a Human Child, his spouse, Undyne and Dr. Alphys 'disappearing'. Mettaton now takes the trone as the underground's newest king. Everybody adored him including the Human Child. An army of robots was amassed by the monarch forming his own underground empire of Napoleonic proportions. Now his conquest to the surface begins, and all of Monsterkind will see the sun under King Mettaton's rule.
———•———•———•———•———•———•———•———•———•———•———
Designing METTATONVS REX had been a huge blast for me especially when it comes to the inspiration; of which is the Emperor Napoleon and his nephew (Napoleon III). METTATONVS REX's uniform is heavily similar from a portrait of Napoleon III, while the crown is based on Napoleon Bonaparte's wreath on his coronation. I might even make custom sprites of METTATONVS REX's army which consist of Soldiers inspired by British Red Coats seen in the Battle of Waterloo but with Mettaton's original rectangular head. This is also my headcanon when Mettaton becomes king if one kills Asgore in the game.

So was rewatching Othertale: Before the Hack (part 1) a few days ago and posting about it, which you can find here, and i was taking notes as i did.
You can also find the link to my analysis of the [caring] animation here, and my analysis of the [experiment] animation here and here.
And happy 9th birthday to both Othertale, and Color Sans!
“Undyne, or Ivory, comes from an AU called Othertale. She can play piano and has a nice sense of music, but can’t sing. She’s much weaker than her Undertale counterpart.
In this AU, Sans never existed (aside from a mysterious sock in the house that Undyne and Papyrus eventually move in to.)
And instead, Undyne—an orphaned street kid blind in one eye with her red hair in a braid—starts looking after an even younger orphaned kid named Papyrus from bullies and thieves. Before eventually, the two decide to stick together as siblings.
Due to being more focused on looking after and raising Papyrus, Undyne does not have any goals to join the Royal Guard or free the Underground or capture any humans.
She cares more about her little brother than anything, and even uses piano skills to eventually become something of a celebrity for the Underground while Papyrus goes on to become a math teacher.
Othertale Undyne grows up in a universe where Sans doesn’t exist, Papyrus is her younger adoptive brother, and she had to work to keep herself and her brother alive.
Using her skills in piano playing to perform concerts, she earns enough to get herself and her brother off the streets.
She seems to take this very seriously, such as being nervous and not sleeping, staying up all night practicing. Especially since she’s become so well know that even King Asgore and Gerson Head of the Royal Guard would be there.
Neither she nor Papyrus have plans to join the Royal Guard, so Gerson is still the captain of the Royal Guard.
Neither Papyrus nor Undyne have any official training, although Undyne and the Royal Scientist Alphys are still love interests—with Alpyhs being Papyrus’ Undernet friend, and appearing to have a celebrity crush on Undyne—even giving her a gift for her big concert.
Because the six human souls also don’t exist in Othertale, breaking the barrier isn’t possible. Mettaton operates more like a living weapon than a star, and the amalgamates don’t exist either. Although Flowey still does.
In the present day of Othertale, many monsters have mysteriously been going missing; with the King himself having to speak on the issue.
It is unclear if Undyne is any concerned about this, given how she readily goes on walks alone with Alphys and was eager to explore an abandoned sentry station that showed up out of nowhere when she heard someone calling her name from it.
One day, however, Undyne is lured into the Void through a sentry station; she hears someone calling her name but no one else can hear it. She decides to immediately go exploring because she wants to have fun. She is rather pushy when Alphys is too scared to go in and explore, but ultimately doesn’t force the other woman to go in.
But inside she is confronted by Gaster and Sans/Color!Sans. She doesn’t understand what’s going on, but is knocked out by a magic fueled punch by Color that transfers some of Color’s “soul power” into her, which opened Undyne’s “blind eye.”
Ivory is not afraid to defend herself; not hesitant at all to summon one of her spears and point it at Gaster when he advances on her, warning him to stay back or else she will hurt him. Although she only does this when he attempts to make a move towards her.
She seems very very nervous about her concert, and she doesn’t seem to have been ready for the level of attention and popularity her skills brought her.
Due to her magic eye that Color unlocked, she seems able to immediately tell if there’s danger nearby; like a warning, perhaps from Color himself. She seems to trust her instincts a lot, immediately ditching her big concert and audience to follow her gut and run straight into danger.
When she finds Alphys injured, she’s furious and fiercely protective; demanding to know who did it in a low growling tone.
Once making sure Alphys is okay, her immediate concern after is her brother and his safety. But rather than immediately running off and abandoning Alphys, she expresses this to her—and after getting reassurance that the other woman is okay and understands, she gives Alphys a tight hug before running off after Papyrus.
As soon as she finds and protects Papyrus, she orders her brother to run and get help while she fights off against the other monster attacking him on her own.
She’s able to shortcut a lot like Sans is able to now. Her eye glows like Sans’ did, only yellow this time. Her fish ears/gills pin back when she’s scared.
When she gains her second form, her hair is chopped off to what appears to be about ear length. Her spears are stronger and longer, and she has her own Gaster Blasters.
She dresses like an Underfell Undyne in this form—and she wears a heart shaped golden necklace with the letter “f” on it.
We don’t know where she got it, what it means, who it came from—but it was said to be a gift from someone.”

This part is in reference to the [experiment] short, and the brother & sister comic.
Before Gaster jumped into the Core and Sans was forgotten in the Void to create Othertale, back when the universe was still Undertale—this universe seems to subscribe to the idea that both Sans and Undyne’s magical eyes were due to experiments by Dr. Gaster.
Sans says that Dr. Gaster made a mistake when giving him his eye, that it made Sans’ body extremely unstable and fragile—and possibly more, although Sans doesn’t seem to hold it against Gaster even when Gaster holds it against himself.
Sans reassures Undyne that Gaster won’t make that same mistake with her, but when the experiment finally works and Undyne is able to see from her fake eye, Gaster immediately tells Sans to remove the soul energy or it would damage Undyne’s body.
Undyne during this flashback seems to be around 5, while Papyrus is at most 1-2, and Sans seems to be in his late teens to early 20s. When Sans is pulled into the Void and the world is rewritten to forget Sans and make Othertale, Ivory’s eye is blind again and later needs to be reactivated by Color transferring his soul energy back to her.
All a part of Color and Shade’s plan to empower Ivory with knowledge and power so she can fight against the impending threat, since Color and Shade cannot leave the Void without the risk of dying.
Despite how Ivory and Shade’s meeting in Othertale’s Void is confronting and wary, in the past, child Undyne seemed to find comfort in Gaster and trusted him a lot—such as wanting him to share in her happiness, being worried about him when he leaves in frustration, and saying that the lab is spooky without him around.
As a child after Sans is forgotten, however, it appears little Ivory met little Sage sometime after an event just referred to as “the explosion.” And ever since then, Sage only ever sought Ivory out whenever the other children would steal from and bully him—and Ivory would beat up the bullies for him and get his stuff back.
One day, while searching for a rubix cube in the garbage dumps, a frantic and crying Sage runs up to Ivory to tell her that the others kids stole his toy car.
Ivory notes that he only ever comes to her when he needs protection. Sage immediately apologizes for this, but Ivory quickly corrects herself as that wasn’t what she meant—this is the moment where Ivory proposes that Sage stick with her instead of surviving on his own.
Sage is reluctant to accept because even though they are friends, they are still strangers. In answer to this, Ivory gives Sage her rubix cube and loudly states that they are neither friends nor strangers—instead they are siblings.
Sage immediately gets excited by this idea, and the two proudly and loudly declare that they are siblings—and Sage promises to always look up to her and support her as his big sister and as the “great Papyrus!”

I've been doing a lot of thinking...and I feel like I need to scream this out somehow even though I'm sure it's been talked about before (and I'm putting it under a readmore because it gets long).
No matter what, in any playthrough you do and any timeline you create.
UNDERTALE is a game about guilt.
You have Toriel, so guiltridden she couldn't protect her own children that she devotes herself to never letting another child leave again. And then they do!! over and over again, that guilt compounds until it's the center of her life and every choice she makes!!
And obviously Asgore, so guiltridden that he couldn't protect his own children from humans that he spends the rest of his days trying to get out and get revenge on them--as if that will stop the voices in his head saying, if you had been out there with them you could have stopped it, you could have stopped those humans from killing your children, and maybe he could have!! Or maybe not!! He'll never know and it eats him from the inside out!
Alphys, oh my sweet summer child this fandom does not deserve you!! Alphys, so guiltridden from her own perceived failures as a scientist that she began to try anything, anything to make the King happy, and it seemed to be working at first, and then it was so everlastingly worse, how can you cause something worse than death?? without even trying??
And it shows up in little ways, silly ways, too! Ways you wouldn't even think about as guilt! Undyne! She feels guilty that she won't let Papyrus join the Royal Guard so she gives him cooking lessons instead! Papyrus feels guilty that he's not in love with you after one date so he'll "keep being your cool friend and act like this never happened!"
SANS MY BOI don't even get me started. His guilt isn't as physically obvious but he made a promise to toriel, he promised her he would keep the human safe, and in timelines where you save everyone he follows you pretty much all throughout the Underground (even if he doesn't do anything to help smh) because he'd feel guilty not doing it, and in timelines where you kill everyone he feels guilty for not stopping you, AND in those SAME timelines he feels guilty for stopping you because it means he's breaking his promise to Toriel to keep you safe I!!! This boy can fit so much cosmic guilt in him!!!!
Asriel! FLOWEY!! Do you ever wonder if he feels guilty about being the one to wake up again? The one to survive, when Chara had to die twice?? He sits at their grave and he will do anything, anything to drown out those thoughts so he befriends and kills and torments and it's all the same and it's all useless!!
And their guilt compounds each others'! Toriel makes Sans make that promise because of her own guilt, which increases his! Asgore's guilt is what pushes Alphys so far past the limits of ethical science, because he increases hers!
And all of this, all of this, ALL OF THIS pales in comparison to you!!!
You!! The player! You return to the Underground after maybe accidentally killing Toriel or a few others because you didn't know, you never wanted to hurt them!! You listen to Flowey and you come back and you save them all!
You! The player!!! You cry at the ending and you'd feel guilty, so guilty about letting them all go, wouldn't you? So you ignore Flowey's pleas to let it alone, and you come back again, you say hello to your dear friends but this time it isn't the same, this time you kill them all because you want to see everything this game has to offer, might as well get your money's worth, the fights are cool, right?? And then you get hit with the most unsatisfying atomic bomb of an ending and the only thing left is your own reflection staring back at you from the black screen of your computer as the horror dawns, what have you done???
YOU!!! The player! You go back again even though there is no Flowey left to tell you to, and you save them all again because I'm sorry, I'm so so sorry, nobody deserves what I did to all of you, and it's all good, nobody remembers, and then you get to the end. The game knows what you did!!! It never forgot, and it'll make certain you never forget either!! Guilt!! Guilt, guilt!!! It's baked into the code of this game!!
Anyways tl;dr, maybe it actually did make sense to give this game to the pope
