I think you’d have to tell Steve if he was being bullied. Even after he fell off the social ladder, I just don’t think he’d notice because his old friends were assholes anyways and why would someone do that? To him??

However, I think you’d also have to tell Steve that no, Ms Byers doesn’t hate him just because she said ‘Morning’ when he went into Melvards instead of ‘Good morning.’

below the cut is stock photos of what is a trike/tricycle in the philippines (what they’re riding on) if you're unfamiliar!! and also some rambling about my heartshackle trio ;;;

i referenced the one on the left, there's usually supposed to be a screen where ace is popping out (and also i think deuce would prefer riding the one on the right where it's an actual motorcycle and not just a bike)

i like to think that the trio found this tricycle trashed and broken somewhere and they tried to fixed it up so they could all take a ride on it

ace and deuce kinda fought who’ll be the first to ride it and deuce only won because they all agreed deuce was the one who actually knew (for the most part) how to fix the thing

all three of them are childhood friends who grew up in the same neighborhood and went to the same elementary school. unfortunately in high school they ended up in different schools, but they all still remained close friends 🥹

grim exists but as a regular cat who “belongs” to yuuna (yuuna was just grim’s favorite out of the three). technically he’s just a neighborhood stray, yuuna can’t really keep him as a pet at home (and neither can ace/deuce) but somehow grim keeps finding the heartshackle trio whenever they’re all together. and so grim just became part of the group.

yuuna has a physical album of photos dedicated to all the times they go to jollibee. they take a photo with the jollibee statue every single time they all go there.

God Brennan HAS to run kids on bikes for the intrepid heroes one day with the exploding mechanic because it would be SO HIGH STAKES and we already know ally and Lou love it and Emily would LOVE IT plus I feel like it could help eliminate low rolls for murph esp if he has an ability where he gets extra tokens if he fails or something like do y’all see the vision I need Brennan to tell someone DC 100 and they MAKE IT

something I’d find funny is Mario being able to do all these cool maneuvers and trick shots with his go-karts and electric motorcycles but cannot FOR THE LIFE OF HIM ride a bicycle.

basically a ramble about the wheels moment, tamarack, and baxter

so you know how you get to pick your vehicle of choice in the prologue?

when you choose roller skates, you get this funny dialogue

when you choose skateboards, qiu says this instead!

but when you pick a scooter, you get a reeeally specific scene.

keep in mind, tamarack does not know how to stop vehicles besides scooters. this is an incredible bit of characterization, because she asks to try your wheels of choice FIRST, gets on it with confidence, and then has the gall to say this:

she asks if she should jump off a bike before this. character of all time.

(btw, if you pick roller skates and save her, the narration says you will need new socks, so you are def going home with holes in your socks lol)

so of course she cant swap scooters with you! she swaps with baxter.

the scene itself is hilarious too.

"i know how to ride any kind of bike i want" girl no you dont this scene really leans into tamarack bothering baxter until he gives in, its so good. he helps her get on the bike, too! and then the usual happens, tamarack fumbles, the mc or baxter can help her, things settle down.

the nonchalantness really sells it! the mc can say it too.

overall, when you stay back with tamarack and baxter, he gets constantly compared to a babysitter. but when qiu and renee come back and ask us what we did, baxter answers first:

this rich snooty kid gave up his bike to someone who not only could have crashed it, but also had to ride a scooter dressed up with stickers, all while effectively babysitting two kids.

and he had fun! now you all know each other!

Fabulous news out of my local youth arts nonprofit.

Their improvisation comedy class simply had too many signups this semester. I stepped in as an assistant teacher so the class could work in smaller groups and get students more specialized experiences, but myself and the director agreed this was a temporary solution.

I proposed a longer-term solution at the start of the semester and this week it was APPROVED.

Next semester, our advanced improvisation students have the chance to participate in a TTRPG campaign as an alternative to the class. This means our students who have a year or more of experience with both theatre basics and improvisational comedy now have the opportunity to try a roleplay-focused long-form improv story. We will both be actively playing the game and also discussing the shared skills of RP and performance, like character building, teamwork, and improvised dialogue.

I am so excited to tell my students and hope they get excited too. Depending on class sizes, I typically coach middle or high school students, but based on the extraordinary abilities of some of our younger students this year, this new class is going to be opened to experienced 5th+ graders. (For non-Americans, 5th graders are typically 10-11 years old.)

If you have experience with both live performance and tabletop roleplay, I'd love to hear your thoughts. For the sake of media familiarity, I'm starting my students with the recently updated 5e DnD handbook, but if the class is successful I would love to branch out with them in future semesters to try games that naturally put the focus on kid characters, like Bubblegumshoe or Kids on Bikes.

My nonprofit currently utilizes borrowed space but is working to fund the purchase of their own building. If that happened in the future and we had student interest, I would love to expand this class feature and host multiple sessions in a week and get more kids involved.
