Audio
Listen to selected tracks from the KPM Library LP ‘Gentle Sounds, Vol. 2′ (KPM 1058, UK, Mono, 1970)
Nothing more really needs to be said on the subject of the KPM 1000 series. The best known and possibly most prolific of the 1960s and 70s London based music libraries, much of its more desirable output is now available on various CD compilations; the vinyl reissues are now well into double figures.
The Gentle Sounds series (Vols 1, 2 & 3) are for the most part a mixture of small combo jazz & Latin flavoured pieces, larger scale, lush string and brass arrangements (sometimes with a beat, sometimes with a faint pastoral air) and the occasional bit of faux classical. In short, it’s the pinnacle of easy listening- what we all hoped those charity shop records would sound like, but didn’t.
The sum effect is a musical experience that effortlessly washes disappointment and anxiety away at the end of a crappy day. A drink, a dressing gown, ‘Gentle Sounds Vol. 2’ and, in the immortal words of Baloo the bear, “I’m gone man, solid gone!”
