Despite the dangers, more migrants, mostly Mexicans, decide to try and cross the northern border, the longest in the world at 5,525 miles. The border with Mexico measures 1,900 miles; then-President Donald Trump built 450 miles of border wall for about $1 billion.

The most up-to-date figures from CBP recorded 189,402 encounters at the northern border in fiscal year 2023. This includes people who arrive at legal points of entry and turn themselves in to request asylum, as well as those who are captured after illegally crossing into the U.S.

There were 10,021 arrests for illegal crossings in that period. According to an analysis by Noticias Telemundo, migrants from Mexico lead the number of illegal crossings from Canada, with 4,868 interceptions, up from 882 arrests in 2022. Other countries with the most migrant interceptions were India, at 1,630, compared to 237 arrests in 2022, and Venezuela, at 753, as opposed to five arrests the year before.

“We have exceeded 6,700 apprehensions in less than 1 year, exceeding the previous 11 years combined,” Robert García, head of the Border Patrol in the Swanton, Vermont sector, said in early September on X.

As of press time, CBP had not responded to Noticias Telemundo’s requests for an interview with García.

Although the figures on the northern border are modest compared to the 2,045,838 encounters that CBP recorded on the border with Mexico during 2023, experts told Noticias Telemundo the numbers are rising.

“Government immigration policies don't change the need or reasoning of people who decide to cross in one direction or another," said Shauna Labman, director of the Human Rights Program at the University of Winnipeg, Canada, who added that some people are fleeing and seeking protection and thus making "dangerous decisions."

Migration Policy Institute analyst Colleen Putzel-Kavanaugh said they're seeing high levels of migration around the world, the highest since World War II. "People are moving at a faster rate than in the past, and that is also seen in the north," she said.

Republican presidential hopeful Vivek Ramaswamy published a series of TikTok videos in October where he walked along hiking trails in Canada near Pittsburg, New Hampshire and crossed a stream into the U.S., saying it was easier than crossing the Rio Grande.

“Don’t just build the wall. Build both walls,” he said during the Nov. 8 Republican primary debate.

Regarding Ramaswamy’s proposal to build two border walls in the U.S., experts said it would be an extremely expensive — and ineffective — solution.

“I think it would not be viable for several reasons. One of them is that the barriers on the border between the United States and Mexico have been shown to not slow migration but, in fact, push migration into certain corridors where people can cross," Putzel-Kavanaugh said. "The other point is that the northern border has a variety of geographies with rivers, lakes, forests and that would be a challenge because of the environmental impacts."

Crossings Turn Deadly

Sometimes, the risk that immigration agents warn about is illustrated tragically: José Leos Cervantes, 45, originally from Aguascalientes, Mexico, collapsed after crossing the border into the U.S. from Quebec at the end of February and was pronounced dead at a hospital.

In March, eight people from two families, one from Romania and one from India, died while trying to cross the St. Lawrence River. Their bodies were found in Akwesasne Mohawk territory, which straddles the Canada-U.S. border.

“It also happens that many people cannot find work in Canada and try to go to the United States. But it is very dangerous, there are always very tragic cases of people who lose their fingers, their clothes stick to their skin, and some die from freezing or for other reasons,” Camelia Tigau, a visiting professor at the University of Toronto and a scholar at the Center for Research on North America at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, told Noticias Telemundo.

Another aspect that complicates the situation along the northern border is that states have transferred migrants who entered through Mexico to areas near Canada, so they can request asylum in the neighboring country in search of better job opportunities, health benefits and a more nimble immigration system.

1949 Seeing an advertisement for a passage to Liverpool for £35 via the scindia steam navigation company, sen finds ways to collect enough money for the journey as well as clothes. He visits Michael Brown, the editor of The Illustrated Weekly of India, who commissions the artist to design six covers at rs. 200 each. Arriving in London, he earns money for his final destination—Paris— freelancing for the Indian section of B.B.c., and the occasional sale of his paintings.

1950 Surendra Singh Alirajpur, the second secretary at the Indian embassy in Belgium, also an old student of Indore’s daly college, organises an exhibition of sen’s works in Brussels. He is the first Indian artist to exhibit in Brussels and the show is a sell-out, providing sen with enough money to live in paris for a year

He arrives in paris to study at andre Lhote’s school, académie de la Grande chaumière, École des Beaux-arts (mural painting) and at École du Louvre (history of painting), paris With the help of nirode Majumder, sen, and fellow artist sankho chaudhuri, visit Brancusi in his studio in Montparnasse.

Paritosh Sen is heavily influenced by the styles and works of artists such as Picasso, Matisse, and Brancusi, which is evident in his use of strong, bold lines, mixed palette and overall composition.

1953

He attends the inauguration ceremony of the annual art exhibition, salon de Mai, in Paris, and comes face to face with picasso. the next day sen visits picasso in his apartment-cum-studio at rue Gay Lussac to show the master his works. picasso offers to organise an exhibition for him. However, sen has made up his mind to return to India.

1954 Returns to calcutta. although upset by the poverty around him, he is hopeful when he witnesses groups of rickshawallahs and others singing and dancing after a long day’s work, and thus begins to paint works with everyday life as his theme. Moves to Netarhat near Ranchi to join netarhat Vidyalaya as art teacher. the green, rugged landscape of netarhat and its locals find their way into his compositions.

1956 Returns to calcutta and joins regional Institute of printing technology, Jadavpur, as a layout and design teacher.

Holds an exhibition of his recent works at artistry House (now park Hotel) which draws a lot of critical applause from the art community.

1962 Holds a solo exhibition, based on Indian ragas and raginis, in London.

He is invited by the Government of France to spend a year in paris during which he designs the Bengali typeface, based on Rabindranath Tagore’s handwriting.

In the same year, the West Bengal government commissions a documentary on his work.

Late 1960s Sen’s works turn darker to reflect his ideological support for the naxalite movement.

1967 Prime Minister Indira Gandhi unveils Paritosh sen’s portrait of Jawaharlal nehru in Hyderabad.

1968 Sen creates a series of new paintings reflecting human anguish and turbulence. the titles of the paintings are revealing enough: The Human Condition, Man Descending Through Space, The Fall, and so on, paints portraits, two of them commemorating the famous singer Ustad Bade Gulam ali Khan. for sen, these works present the perfect amalgamation of his love for Indian music as well as his own strength as an artist. santi p. chowdhury writes, ‘one could stand before the canvases and hear the Ustad sing.

The bold, black lines in his work give way to a burst of overlapping colours such as green, blue, red, yellow, and brown.

1969 Leaves for europe towards the end of the year, with a grant from the french government.

1970-71

Receives a grant from the John D. Rockefeller III fund, allowing him to travel to, and work in, USA. Here, he predominantly paints expressionist canvases inspired by de Kooning.

1971 the Bangladesh war has lateral political and cultural effects on West Bengal. sen is unable to work for a while on his return as he is affected emotionally due to political and social unrest.

Late-1970s As a response to political turmoil, sen creates a series of works with figures clad in a dhoti with garlands around their necks. Laden with irony and humour, the characters are meant to represent the political bigwigs of the time.

1980s He begins to focus on figures and faces of men and women across all classes.

1981

Serves as a visiting professor at Maryland Institute of art, Baltimore, and also lectures on contemporary Indian art at various centres and institutes in U.s.a. His exposure to racial riots in America results in his Isabelle series of paintings.

1986 His story, A Tree in My Village, is published by national Institute of design, ahmedabad. the text is designed in sen’s own calligraphy and he also illustrates the folios.

Is appointed commissioner of the Indian section of the Havana Biennale II, cuba.

Is invited to speak on Indian contemporary painting at Loomis chaffee school by allan Lundie Wise Lecture fund, Windsor, U.SA, receives fellowship from Lalit Kala akademi, New Delhi.

A documentary is made on him by doordarshan, calcutta, titled One Day in the Life of a Celebrity.

1996 publishes Abu Symbol, Picasso O Anyanya Tirthe. the book, a tribute to picasso and Brancusi, describes his visit to their studios and his travels and life in paris. Publishes his autobiography, Zindabahar.

A new cartoon published by the German magazine named Der Spiegel depicts India’s population overtaking China. Cartoons have been a way to depict harsh realities or highlight double standards.

However, sometimes, the illustrations themselves exhibit double standards. The cartoon has elicited sharp reactions from Indians, who have dubbed it as “racist.”

In the cartoon from Der Spiegel, an overcrowded Indian train passes a modernised Chinese bullet train travelling on a parallel track with only two drivers inside. The passengers on top of the Indian train are holding the tricolour.

India is on course to overtake China as the world’s most populous nation by July of this year, according to a UN report released earlier this month.

While people on social media have been expressing their outrage about the inaccurate portrayal, some politicians and other authorities have also used Twitter to condemn the cartoon as “racist” and “derogatory.”

Union Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar tweeted, ”Dear Cartoonist at @derspiegel…Notwithstanding your attempt at mocking India… it’s not smart to bet against India under PM @narendramodi ji….In a few years, India’s economy will be bigger than Germany’s.”

Der Spiegel’s Trump Cartoon

German weekly magazine Der Spiegel isn’t new to controversy. Earlier, it drew criticism with a front cover illustration of former US president Donald Trump beheading the Statue of Liberty, according to Reuters.

The cartoon showed a figure of Trump with a bloodied knife in one hand and the statue’s head, dripping with blood, in the other. It carried the caption: “America First.”

The artist who designed the cover, Edel Rodriguez, a Cuban who came to the United States in 1980 as a political refugee, told The Washington Post: “It’s a beheading of democracy, a beheading of a sacred symbol.”

The cover set off a debate on Twitter and in German and international media, with Alexander Graf Lambsdorff, a member of Germany’s Free Democrats (FDP) and vice president of the European Parliament, describing it as “tasteless.”

The cover followed a series of attacks on Berlin’s policies by Trump and his aides, marking a rapid deterioration in German relations with the United States. Chancellor Angela Merkel was the go-to European ally for former US president Barack Obama, who praised her as “an outstanding partner.”

Charlie Hebdo’s Turkey Earthquake Cartoon

The controversial French satirical publication Charlie Hebdo released a caricature that appeared to be making fun of the earthquake victims in Turkey.

No need to send tanks, read the artwork by Pierrick Juin, which featured tottering structures amidst mounds of debris.

The cartoon drew harsh criticism on Twitter, with some users accusing it of being ugly, racist, and incredibly insensitive while others claimed it was making fun of the innumerable earthquake victims.

Omar Suleiman, an American Muslim academic and civil rights activist with the Yaqeen Institute for Islamic Research, tweeted in response to the cartoon that it “dehumanises” Muslims as victims in “every way.”

Many Turks criticising the magazine claimed that they had organised marches in support of “Je Suis Charlie” when its headquarters had been attacked in 2015 only to be punished in this way.

Even the Turkish president’s spokesperson, Ibrahim Kalin, condemned the cartoon in a tweet that read, “Modern barbarians! Suffocate in your hatred and grudges.”

Iran’s Ayatollah Ali Khamenei Cartoon

When it published caricatures of Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the French satirical publication enraged the Islamic Republic.

The cartoon was created in support of Iran’s first-ever female-led rallies, which got underway in September of last year following the passing of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old woman who had been imprisoned for “incorrectly” donning the hijab.

Iran’s foreign minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian wrote on Twitter, “The insulting and indecent act of a French publication in publishing cartoons against the religious and political authority will not go without an effective and decisive response.”

“We will not allow the French government to go beyond its bounds. They have definitely chosen the wrong path,” he added.

The 12 Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) Cartoons

The Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten published 12 caricatures along with an article titled “Muhammeds ansigt (The face of Muhammad)” on 30 September 2005. It stated that they were a critique of Danish media self-censorship.

The following year, Charlie Hebdo published these caricatures.

Following their initial publication, the cartoons drew criticism from all across the world for being blasphemous and feeding prejudices about Muslims as terrorists.

They incited violent demonstrations throughout Asia and the Middle East, and many called for a boycott of Danish products.

The New Yorker Magazine’s Obama Cartoon

Barack Obama’s campaign staff criticised The New Yorker magazine for a front-cover cartoon from 2008 that showed him dressed in traditional Muslim outfit and his wife as a terrorist, according to BBC.

The cartoon by Barry Blitt, according to the publication, was meant to make fun of some of the exaggerated right-wing attacks on the Democratic senator.

However, the cartoon was referred to as “tasteless and offensive” by an Obama campaign spokesperson.

Tintin Cartoon in the Book

According to BBC, in 2010, a Congolese citizen attempted to get a contentious Tintin book outlawed in Belgium, the nation that gave rise to the cartoon character.

In Tintin in the Congo, Bienvenu Mbutu claimed that the “little (black) helper” of the ginger sleuth was seen as “stupid and without qualities”.

Mbutu, a resident of Belgium, claimed that it “makes people think that blacks have not evolved.”

Mbutu wasn’t the only person to criticise the book for its offensive racial stereotypes. The UK’s Commission for Racial Equality demanded that the book be outlawed on the grounds that it contained language and illustrations that displayed abhorrent racial prejudice.

Jesus on Malaysian Newspaper

As per the report, in 2007, after publishing a picture of Jesus holding a cigarette and what appeared to be a beer can, a Malaysian newspaper came under pressure to close.
