Cam’ron - Purple Haze 2 ALBUM REVIEW

The height of Cam’ron’s success was going on during the early years of my life so I wouldn’t consider his music apart my childhood. I found out about Cam’ron and The Diplomats a little later even though I knew the hit songs that they put out as solo artists (Hey Ma, Oh Boy, Pop Champagne). Last year, The Diplomats reunited for an extremely forgettable album that I wasn’t expecting much from the beginning. Cam’ron is still to this day, easily the best rapper out of that group but he is certainly past his prime of when he was putting out his best music. Purple Haze is widely regarded as his best work (Come Home With Me is my favorite) so I was a little concerned with how the sequel would turn out all these years later. Cam’ron has kind of slowed down in his musical output. His last official album, Crime Pays came out in 2009 which was an okay album. Since then, he has put out a few projects. He put out collab projects with Vado and Berner. In 2014 he put out an EP at the first of every month for 6 months. Those EPs, called 1st Of The Month ended up becoming whole compilation which I thought was kind of slept on even though it was rough around the edges. Two years ago he beefed with Mase and put out a mixtape called The Program that I didn’t care for. Even after that and the last Diplomats album, I still wanted to hear Purple Haze 2 simply because of the title and the singles made me look forward to the album. Believe In Flee was okay but Big Deal was what made me want to listen to this album. The way that soulful beat comes on made me want to hear it. The beat is fantastic. Regarding Purple Haze 2 as entire body of work, the production definitely carries the album. It is great to hear more Heatmakerz production because they are responsible for almost all of Cam’ron’s best work (can’t forget about Just Blaze though). I liked the way it starts off with Toast To Me. That track was perfect being the intro to Purple Haze 2. The following track, Medellin however, was weirdly placed in the tracklist and it wasn’t good at all. I understand that artists can try different things but Cam’ron does not need to rap over beats like that. That song, along with a few others near the end of the album like Killa Bounce just sound out of place and don’t really have any business being on this album compared to the other songs on here. I think Purple Haze 2 is the strongest body of work Cam’ron has put out in years. Cam’ron’s rap voice has changed a lot and he doesn’t sound as good as he used to but his lyrics are still good. He gives us the bars we usually expect from him but he also gets introspective on tracks like Losin Weight 3. Aside from Big Deal, the following track Fast Lane is one of my favorites. The way that vocal sample is chopped up and layered by The Heatmakerz is nothing but flames. These are some of the best beats he has rapped over in a while. Even though this is a pretty good album, it is far from perfect. The end of this album has a lot of songs that feel like filler because they aren’t as great as the other tracks. Even though I wasn’t crazy about I Don’t Know, I expected Cam’ron to have a song like that on the album because he usually includes a few of those tracks more directed toward his female audience on his albums. On the other hand, Wale sounded great on the beat and easily had the best guest verse on the album. Purple Haze 2 isn’t perfect but it’s a good album and one of the best efforts that Cam’ron has put out in a while.
