Oh it's that fucking thing! It used to be one of my talking points when I gave tours at the State House. Its fishy counterpart is a brass casting in State Senate's chandelier, sometimes called the Holy Mackerel.

sorry to be making so many posts about my historically women's college lately. this is the piece I mentioned earlier mostly written for an audience of other people who went to this college but perhaps you might also enjoy a freaky little history of one of our most prized traditions, which celebrates how women should be women and men should be editors of the harvard lampoon who get thrown into the lake

Milestone Monday
On this day, August 14 in 1863, American writer and poet Ernest L. Thayer (1863-1949) was born in Lawrence, Massachusetts. Thayer, who honed his satirical chops at Harvard as editor of the Harvard Lampoon and as a member of the Hasty Pudding theatrical society, was best known for his comical ballad Casey at the Bat which cemented the mighty Casey into American folklore alongside Johnny Appleseed and Paul Bunyan. Casey at the Bat was first published in The San Francisco Examiner in 1888 and became popularized by De Wolf Hopper’s vaudeville performances and many adaptations throughout history. It is considered one of the best-known poems in American literature.
Within the Special Collections holdings, we have a copy of The First Book Edition of Casey at the Bat published in 1964 by Franklin Watts Inc. and illustrated by seasoned children’s book artist Leonard Everett Fisher (born 1924). Fisher’s simple illustrations capture the nerve-racking energy of the poem and almost animate off the pages. The edition also includes an introduction from famed baseball player and manager Casey Stengel (1890-1975) who takes the opportunity to clear up any misgivings that the poem was written about him and shares his account of a private performance of Casey at the Bat from Hopper as congratulations after winning a game for the Giants.

10 - do you have a guilty fav?
None that I've gone back to, but recently I definitely enjoyed Bored of the Rings by the Harvard Lampoon more than I probably should have. I don't know how to describe the kind of humour it is, but it's pretty much on par with other Harvard Lampoon/National Lampoon stuff, which is to say the humour relies almost entirely on everyone being stupid. And it's fucking hilarious. (And if I'm allowed to answer with something that sounds pretentious as hell to call a guilty fav, Voltaire's correspondance. It's my go-to when I need something to read but I'm bored of or frustrated with whatever else I'm reading at the time, and it's easy as long as I don't have to translate it since it's in shorter bits and I've gotten used to how it's written)

In honor of its late one year anniversary, I wanted to share the bits and pieces of Strangers by Nature that never made their way to my final work!
-
The college universe was inspired by @666sachertorte666 on tumblr — this post had my gears greased and turning.
Canonically, Kendall attended Buckley as an undergrad, but it didn’t flow how I wanted, so it’s not what happened. I’m insane and Succession is vague, so it worked out.
Jess was born August 5th. Happy birthday, girl! Does the date align zodiac-wise? Someone tell me. I'm not changing it, though.
College!Kendall applied twice for Business at the Lampoon but didn’t make it until his Senior year, poor guy. He deflected every time someone asked — “It was time spent honing my craft."
The Sapphire Ball was real! Check out that blog. Look at those cuties.
The Senior Masquerade Ball — also real. Harvard realness. This is Jess’s Elizabeth Taylor dress. Was it what you pictured?
Stewy's nickname for Jess comes from “Fuzzy Study” - An individual who has declared to major in one of the fuzzy studies: Art, Philosophy, Sociology, Anthropology, English, Liberal Studies, etc.
Kendall’s pen. Life ruining pen. Regretful decision-enducing pen that ruined lives, particularly the gifter's. Poor girl.
Jess’s second dress. Lots of periwinkle blues, I know, but I imagine she favors dusty shades. (Very young she read a Seventeen magazine article that detailed skin seasons, and though she's older and wiser — a Harvard graduate, fanonically — there's a part of her that dresses in accordance with her undertone. Call it superstitious loyalty.)
Also!
God, this feels like Christmas and I’m on time with presents this year. I’m unveiling the title of my upcoming continuation of Kendall and Jess! Renegade. Excited to gush and ooze more Succession minority ship. No ETA, but it's been in the womb-works longer than Stranger by Nature. So... soon? Hopefully?
-
Finishing off are two thin slices of nixed KenJess:
Deserted Island
Alumni Reunion
-
Thank you so much for the support on ao3 and also on here as I get a feel for this place. Always more to come! x
