Genuine question as I am curious — I know it’s pretty obvious with his expressions/ body language that Daniel seemed shy/insecure(?) about having his braces, but has he ever outright said anything about feeling that way with them? Just out of curiosity as I am new around here!
“I feel very different in terms of looks. Fortunately, experience also bought me better looks. I’m not really too fond of showing people photos of me when I was younger”
#well he doesn’t exactly say he was self-conscious of his braces but he was definitely very self-conscious about how he looked#it’s always very interesting to me the way Daniel talks about his younger self#it’s so different from how other f1 drivers talk about their early days#he’s so self-critical of younger him that I wish he was a bit more forgiving of younger him#the way he’s admitted he was never a standout talent during his karting days#that he was so hesitant to get involved in battles that his dad got mad at him#the way on the gypsy tales podcast he talks about Motocross riders being fearless and how he doesn’t have that until jase interrupts him -#to say how how mad he is because just a few days ago he was throwing a car around on a street circuit at some 300kph#the way in this video with will he describes himself walking into the paddock like a ‘headless chick’#the way he has said so many times he was scared to move away from home. how uncertain he was he would ever succeed#and then that one video towards the end of 2022 when he says ‘I was just Daniel then’ in reference to his younger self#like he has such a distinct way of looking at his younger self. like he views that part of him almost as a separate entity from the him now#and I guess that’s because it took a lot of work and years to build that confidence of becoming Daniel ricciardo#a confidence he got as he managed to survive the shark tank of the red bull junior academy#a confidence he got from beating his 4x wdc teammate. from winning the most insane races#and that confidence then getting completely decimated in the space of a few months in 2022#and even now the more he says he is confident you can still see that tiny hesitancy#how every time he gets a good result you see how he yearns to lean back into his confident Daniel schtick#and he may just completely embrace it soon anyway <3#daniel ricciardo#anon ask

*I am defining a “sondheim musical” as a musical that stephen sondheim was directly involved with and helped create (ex: sondheim did not compose the music in west side story, but he wrote lyrics for it therefore I still consider it a “sondheim musical”)
**he worked on NINETEEN musicals I couldn’t possibly fit them all in here

Happy Birthday to the Man Who Started it All
youtube
"Patience"
Said, woman, take it slow, and things will be just fine
You and I'll just use a little patience
Said sugar, take the time, cause the lights are shining bright
You and I've got what it takes to make it
We won't fake it
Aw, I'll never break it
Cause I can take it
It doesn't matter where you are or where you go; it's always hot on April 8th. 🔥
Happy Birthday to the talented and respected, sexiest bastard on the planet.
Izzy Stradlin.
youtube
"Think About You"
Somethin' changed in this heart of mine
You know that I'm so glad that you showed me
Honey, now you're my best friend
I wanna stay together 'til the very end
Ooh, it was the best time I can remember
Ooh, and the love we shared, is loving that'll last forever
I think about you, honey, all the time, my heart says yes
I think about you, deep inside I love you best
I think about you, you know your the one I want
I think about you, darling you're the only one ...
youtube
"Dust N' Bones"
There's no logic here today
Do as you got to, go your own way
I said, that's right
Time's short your life's your own
And in the end we are just
Dust an' bones
Dust an' bones
Dust an' bones

Was thinking while watching that scene where Pol tells Ada about her abortion.
Polly really doesn't take on the mum role in the family to my mind, or even the matriarch/aunt tbh. And I think, there was some summary somewhere that referred to her as the consigliere and while she does perform a certain bouncing-board, plan formation role with Tommy (and only with Tommy, and only with insight into certain parts of his plans; I'm struggling to think of times the others listen to her without Tommy backing her up, S3 as example of when they don't), her other behaviours in the family also mean this isn't her role at all.
She's the wild older sister who is loving and explosive and hurtful, and incredibly, incredibly fragile, afraid and she feels so very scared, vulnerable and alone, most of the time. She just wants all her loved ones to be happy and safe and in achieving that, Tommy is frequently as much of an obstacle as he is the vehicle to get her that. I do headcanon that Polly lives 99% of her life in fear and on that edge of breakdown, it's just that she's lived with it so long she probably doesn't even acknowledge it any more. Her reactivity is so high.
So yeah, it's no wonder Tommy sort of plays that joint patriarch-matriarch role (arranging marriages etc), because Polly is *not* playing the matriarch.
#her stories to ada about that feminine/mother trauma are all sort of--#--with this tone of 'please forgive me please say you understand please say my decisions made sense'#because polly isn't certain in herself#she *acts* certain#idk#wild older sister that everyone including the youngest all have to sort of take care of#some of the way she says things about tommy that help *not at all*#like “he used to sleep out as a kid” pretending he's not out there having a complete fucking breakdown and she doesn't know what to dooooo#(though she *wants* to help she does)#every time she explains his traumas as impossible to avoid because they're gypsy and that's their lot in life#...let me get out my postcolonial lens again#->noting this is also a belief set tommy's mother also had#my headcanon polly absolutely idolised tommy's mother because she lost her mother young; following t's mum around like *her* mum#imagining tommy's mum could 'do no wrong' in pol's eyes

realizing that there’s people who sooo sympathize with Nick Godejohn & think he’s a poor little baby who was manipulated by the irredeemably evil Gypsy Rose is a friendly reminder to me that I really do live in a bubble on the internet some of u are insane

Just lived through the best class I ever had in my life. Romani language teacher invited a famous Sinti Public figure (can't disclose who BUT I WAS SO THRILLED) to teach some sinti language and he talked about some stuff that felt so cathartic to me. When it comes to background and culture I thought my family was an anomaly because none of us speaks Sinti and we are actually very mixed with a lot of different ethnic groups that we don't even know which ones, but he verbatim said that was a pretty standard experience like !!!! He said he himself had to relearn the language and that his grandpa (a very, very big jazz musicizn, cant disclose the name) did not speak the language either. He said that in my country, 70 years ago the new Sinti Generation came to think of the Sinti language as backwards and ugly so they rejected it. And then he played music with a Romanian Romani musician who was also there. Afterwards I got some coffee with that Romanian Rom and we complained about how being settled sucks and how many Romani people (he was talking about Romania, I was talking about my country) don't speak the language, and then we shared family pictures lmaooo
#I think I said it before but those classes are so cathartic and healing to me#so many things I thought my family was weird for or was an anomaly about are actually common experiences etc#And the way internet gypsies represent the 'authentic' r0mani experience is so far from lived reality#you can tell those internet people never log off and hang out w actual Sinti and Roma

a friend asked why my url across platforms is always ohwhatagloomyshow & I explained that I had the honor of meeting Stephen Sondheim in 2013, where I built up the courage to thank him for his work and tell him the revival of Follies was the first show I’d ever seen on Broadway. He smiled and said kindly, “oh, what a gloomy show!” because I’m a 19 year old newborn baby praising a show about midlife crises.
Anyway, I told the friend it’s probably Sondheim’s gloomiest show, but that’s probably a debatable opinion! I would love to hear any arguments against it! I would say that of all his shows, it’s the one that ends with the least amount of hope. My definition of “gloomiest show” is most dependent on how you feel when you leave the theater, and in this case I do think Follies takes the cake, personally!
Full disclosure, the shows I’m least familiar with of Sondheim’s are Merrily & Passion.

they loved dyeing his hair this fuckass awful color in the late 60s/early 70s why is it the brassiest brown known to man slap some toner on there or something it’s too conspicuous a color for blondie
#it goes w the theme of his midlife crisis during that period tho#sometime after he finished gypsy moths#he didn’t sign a citation -> got arrested -> didn’t bail himself out or call anyone until 5:00AM the next morning#he was making a lot of odd decisions around that time#and even jackie talked about realizing he was probably wildly depressed#and i think it’s bc the late 60s early 70s was a period of adjustment for him and he temporarily fell out of love w acting#he didn’t have a strong fanbase he wasn’t able to finance a film w just his name and he wasn’t getting good offers in hollywood anymore#he started to focus more on his activism and started throwing himself into campaigns#and he became chairman of the aclu foundation during the california project#honestly on paper it started to look like he was going to change careers#but he found his way back to filmmaking#……this post was about hair dye#the gypsy moths#1969#1960s#screencaps

Not to mention the immense irony that the 'farewell' speech Tommy gives to his family opens exactly as would a politician’s speech about honouring his promises.
Emotion the enemy of oratory, etc.
#no lizzie and no arthur#must've really fucked him up that :( but he probably couldn't have said as much as he did if they were there#also rewatched that final scene with tommy and alfie and my god alfie is such an arsehole to him!#alfie is still furious for tommy's failure on the beach#alfie is furious tommy is the one who restored his authority#alfie went and found a Gypsy girl in a circus with blue eyes and black hair who has a stocky strong masculine build who happened to-#-have the same name as his mother Edna; alfie proposed instantly and fucks her while staring psychotically into her blue eyes#sent tommy 'i'm a little busy right now' shelby a personalised wedding invite and was ignored#alfie furious about that too. the number of times tommy's humiliated him now#it was supposed to be the other way around but alfie is oddly and repetitively impotent around tommy#alfie giving too much of a fuck then suddenly backpedalling and scornfully insisting he does not give a fuck#alfie's emotional state is permanently a sixteen year old boy just masked by extreme verbosity
