kapil sharma RRR game
(listen, i'm not fully fluent in hindi, and kapil breaks out the punjabi unexpectedly, so i might be wrong with some parts of the translation)
youtube
-
[0.:05]
kapil: sir, i'm going to play a game with you. alia, everyone will have headphones over their ears. from that, music will play. i will say a line, and you have to lip read that, then you have to tell ram sir, ram has to tell ntr sir, ntr has to tell rajamouli sir.
so are you guys ready?
please bring the headphones.
[0:35]
kapil: alia, first you come here please. (whispers) together we can beat the south-indians.
this whole game is on you, alia, based on how you explain to the others and how you guess. music will play, and don't play it too loud (to the crew), the girl is like a flower, her ears (are delicate).
please come up here, sirs.
alia: everyone come here.
[1:05]
kapil: "zindagi jhandhwa, phir bhi ghamandwa" (first phrase, which means that your life is shit but you're still arrogant/you think you're something special)
(repeats the phrase)
alia: how can i speak? (because the music is so loud)
kapil: just speak, just speak
[1:24]
alia to charan: "zindagi"
charan: "zindagi"
alia: "jhandwa" (starts laughing)
charan: "jalwa?" (jalwa means like fire/charismatic/splendid/awesome from what i understand)
alia: "zindagi jhandhwa, phir bhi ghamandwa"
[1:36]
charan to tarak: "zindagi"
tarak: yeah, "zindagi jalwa", i got that, (tell me) what's after that
charan: "phir bhi bewda" (bewda means clumsy/drunkard i believe)
tarak: "zindagi jalwa phir bhi bewda"?? (i guess means like 'life is great but i'm still an alcoholic? i don't think it makes any sense either)
charan: yeah
(laughter)
[1:50]
tarak to ssr: "zindagi"
ssr: *confused*
tarak: (something in telugu, probably along the lines of 'say it back to me')
ssr: "zindagi"
tarak: "jalwa". jalwa! like halwa! (halwa is a sweet food)
ssr: "jalwa! zindagi jalwa"
tarak: "phir bhi"
ssr: "mein bhi" (different preposition, alters meaning slightly)
tarak: "phir bhi"! ph! ph! (uses telugu word i think)
(finally communicates it)
ssr: "zindagi jalwa phir bhi bewda"?
(first round over, general laughter and outrage at the nonsense)
[2:34]
alia: i don't think i said anything wrong?
kapil: you (alia) were right, what did you say?
alia: "zindagi jhandwa phir bhi ghamandwa"
kapil: and what did ram sir say?
charan: "zindagi jalwa phir bhi bewda"
(laughter)
tarak: but what was the original thing, sir?
alia: "zindagi jhandwa phir bhi ghamandwa"
[3:03]
kapil: okay, the second line--
alia: please play the music now!
tarak: (says something in telugu, 'baaga' means good, so he might have been referring to the game or the music, not sure)
kapil: okay. "machhli jal ki rani hai, meri nani shaani hai" (second phrase, which means that 'the fish is the queen of the ocean/water, and my maternal grandmother is shaani'; that is either a name or an adjective i haven't heard before; the first half is part of a nursery rhyme, i think)
alia: "badi?" (badi means big)
[3:18]
alia to charan: "machhli jal ki rani hai"
charan: easy, take it easy.
alia: "machhli jal ki rani hai, badi nachari hai" (i believe badi nachari hai means 'is very poor', i could be wrong)
[3:36]
charan to tarak: "machhli jal ki rani hai"
tarak: "bijli"? (means electricity)
charan: "jal" (makes wave motions witb his hand to show it's water) "ki rani hai"
alia: "no, you can't do that (make gestures)
charan: okay, "jal ki rani hai"
tarak: "bijli jal ki rani hai"? (electricity is the queen of the ocean/water)
charan: "macchli!"
tarak: "machhli jal ki rani hai"
charan: "phir bhi"...? (turns to ask alia what the rest was) ...second part?
alia: "badi nachari hai"
charan: "phir bhi badi nachari hai!"
tarak: (confused) "machhli jal ki rani hai, phir bhi"
charan: "phir bhi"... (also confused)
tarak: "phir bhi"?
charan: ey, just say whatever, bro!
(laughter)
charan: "phir bhi maharani hai" (means, and yet she is a great queen/empress)
[4:13]
tarak to ssr: "machhli" (fish)
ssr: "bajrangi!" (lord hanuman)
tarak: "machhli!"
ssr: "bachti"?
tarak: fish, fish! "machhli!"
ssr: ah, "machhli!"
tarak: "machhli jal ki rani hai"
ssr: "machhli jal ki rani hai!"
tarak: yeah. (turns to charan) "phir bhi maharani hai?"
charan: just say whatever
tarak to ssr: okay, "phir bhi maharani hai"
ssr: (understanding) "phir bhi maharani hai". okay, "machhli jal ki rani hai, phir bhi maharani hai" (meaning, the fish is the queen of the ocean, and yet she is the empress)
[4:49]
alia: what was the original?
kapil: okay, so the actual line was this, "machhli jal ki rani hai, meri nani shaani hai", but still everyone got 50% correct
[5:00]
alia: one more? one more, i like this game
kapil: "bhains poonch uthayegi, toh sober hi rahegi" (this is a modification of the original phrase, and i guess it means 'if the buffalo lifts its tail, it'll remain sober? i'm not aware of any other meaning of sober, so this sounds like nonsense)
alia: what? (kapil repeats the phrase and she's still confused, he acts it out) "bhains, poonch, hila rahi hai" (means the buffalo is shaking the tail, i think, but i also have heard 'hilana' as slang for masturbating)
(kapil explains once again, and she doesn't get the second half, so he changes it to the original film phrase: "bhains poonch uthayegi, toh gober hi karegi" which means when the buffalo lifts its tail, it's going to shit cow dung, i suppose that means there's no point being surprised about something, what did you expect)
kapil: (say) whatever you want.
alia: (still confused, thinks he's saying the line) "jo kamaaye"? (something about earning)
(goes through it one more time)
alia: "bhains poonch uthaye, toh bade kamaaye?" (means if the buffalo lifts his tail, you'll earn a lot of money)
kapil: sure
charan: kapil sir, the song ended just now
[5:53]
alia to charan: "bhains poonch uthaye"
charan: "main poonch"...? (about to say 'when i lift my tail')
alia: "bhains!" (buffalo, not you)
charan: oh, "bhains!"
alia: "bhains poonch uthaye, toh bade kamaaye"
charan: "bhains ka poonch bade kamaal ki hai" (means the buffalo's tail is really awesome)
[6:14]
charan to tarak: "bhains ka poonch bade kamaal ki hai"
tarak: (confused)
(alia stops him, asks kapil to tell her the phrase again)
kapil: the buffalo has put its tail back down
alia: ???
kapil: (repeats the line) "bhains poonch uthayegi, toh gober hi karegi"
alia: OH! (turns to charan) "bhains poonch uthaye, toh rupay laaye" (means when the buffalo lifts its tail, it will bring rupees)
[6:35]
charan to tarak: "bhains ka poonch uthayega, toh paisa aaya" (essentially the same meaning, when the buffalo lifts its tail, then money came)
tarak: (tries to understand, so confused; the others tell him to pass it on) what am i supposed to say?
kapil: explain, explain to him (ssr) now
charan: say it
[6:58]
tarak to ssr: "bhains"
ssr: "bhains"
tarak: "poonch uthaye"
ssr: "poonch utha!"
both tarak and charan: "toh paise aaye"
ssr: "toh paisa aaya"??
[7:14]
kapil: okay, now remove your headphones!
ssr: what is that?
tarak and charan: was that correct?
kapil: so what i said to alia was, "bhains poonch uthayegi, toh sober hi rahegi", at first. she didn't understand. so then i said the exact line "bhains poonch uthayegi, toh gober hi karegi". she (alia) said, when the buffalo lifts its tail, then money (rupees) comes. when the buffalo lifts the tail, does an ATM open there or something?
(alia is embarrassed)
kapil: but it was a wonderful game! you all played very well! please come sit.

The young Jamaican has an easy grace about him, even at a full sprint. He glides across the parched Oval turf silently, almost as if he isn’t touching the ground at all. The softness of his stride and the speed and hostility with which he bowls give him one of the great sporting nicknames. Michael Holding, 22 in the summer of 1976, becomes known as Whispering Death. The 14 wickets for 149 runs he takes in this, the fifth and final match of the series – still a record for a West Indian bowler in test cricket – cap a summer where the whole West Indies took it very personally.
youtube
There is a history of South Africans leaving home and playing international cricket for other nations. Traditionally, the destination of choice has been England, though today there are exceptionally talented South Africans playing for Australia and New Zealand. There are lots of reasons why they do this – Kevin Pietersen ended up playing for England because of conflict with administrators in South Africa, for instance – but in the 1970s, it is because apartheid South Africa is banned from playing internationally. Tony Greig, England captain in 1976, is one such player and commits a profound mistake when, the day before the series starts, in his Afrikaner accent, he announces his intention to make the West Indies, a team of black men, descendents of slaves, grovel.
youtube
The outcry is instantaneous. The retribution prolonged. The series is 5 matches long, across 11 weeks of the English summer. An angry and extremely motivated West Indies win 3-1 and it goes down in history as the beginning an era of unmatched dominance in international sport. Viv Richards scores 829 runs at an average of 118, Gordon Greenidge 592 at 66. Holding and Andy Roberts take 28 wickets each - 56 of the 100 available English victims. The team takes every opportunity to revenge themselves on the English.
In the end, it is Greig who on the field of play, performatively drops to his hands and knees in front of his opponents.
In 1981, Mikey Holding begins a test in Bridgetown, Barbados with a stunning, never bettered over to England opening batter Geoff Boycott – a famously terrible person. The 6th and final ball sends Boycott’s stumps flying. It’s doubtful whether he sees the first five deliveries at all. Boycott will claim that this over, and by extension himself, makes Holding – by now the best fast bowler in the world – famous.
6 weeks later, Holding is playing club cricket against amateurs in Lancashire. The league features quality international players turning out amongst bank managers and estate agents. Roberts plays for another team. Kapil Dev, one of Indian cricket’s gods, is there, too.
Mikey doesn’t do well. Injuries, weather and a desire not to hurt players far less talented than him keep him from fully dominating, but he shows flashes of his capabilities. In an act of staggering racism and stupidity, a player from an opposing team turns up for a match wearing a monkey mask "as a joke." Mikey takes 9 for 13 that day, clean bowling 7.
He retires in 1987 having played 60 tests and taken 259 wickets, low in today’s numbers. The West Indies are the best in the world and will remain so well into the 90s. In 1984 they beat England 5-0 in England – celebrated than and now as the Blackwash – and repeat the feat in 1986 when England tour the West Indies. By now the Barbadian, Malcolm Marshall has inherited Mikey’s crown as the greatest fast bowler of all. They win 4-0 in England two years later, Marshall taking 35 wickets in the 5-match series.
Tumblr media
Their rule is not preordained. There is outcry over their bowlers. It is said to be unfair to bowl that fast, to target players the way the West Indians do. It is dangerous. They will kill people. Left unsaid is that nothing they do is against the rules. Nothing is said about similar bowlers from other countries like the lauded Australian duo of Thompson and Lillee. Rules are changed. More and better safety equipment is introduced. Helmets become universal. Viv Richards is one of the last to still wear a soft cap when facing fast bowling. The West Indies adapt and continue to win.
Through the 80s there are a number of tours of South Africa made up of players willing to take money to break the ban on playing there. Most rebels receive multi-year bans. The careers of many are effectively ended. Many others are welcomed back with open arms. Graham Gooch, for instance, will go on to captain England after leading on team on a tour in 1981-82.
Two of the tours are made up of West Indians. Those who travel are either talented players not quite good enough to break into the team, or older players coming to the end of their careers. The South Africans try to get the best West Indians to come, too. Richards, at this point the biggest star in the sport, is told that if he comes he will be considered an honourary white man, exempt from the rules of apartheid. He turns down the blank cheque he is offered. Those who go are banned from playing for the West Indies and many are ostracised socially and professionally over their willingness to take money from the apartheid regime.
Today, South Africa's test captain is Temba Bavuma.
Tumblr media
Michael Holding becomes a commentator. His fast bowling mindset provides an alternative to the procession of former batters who sit beside him. Over the years, Mikey's baritone Jamaican twang becomes beloved in the same way Richie Benaud’s soft Australian burr was before him.
Cricket commentary is often relaxed and eccentric - a test match has 8 hours of play a day over 4 or 5 days - and the commentary team will chat about many things during the day. There is much time to fill, and sometimes they do it with meandering conversations about pigeons, or buses, or cakes. And sometimes with more important and vital subjects. During a rain break during a match between England and the West Indies three years ago today Mikey delivers his most profound and important address when he and Ebony Rainford Brent talk about the racism they have experienced in their lives. While the UK is in covid lockdown, the US is gripped by Black Lives Matter protests and Mikey’s monologue and the TV interviews that follow go viral. He writes a book afterwards, Why We Kneel, How We Rise, discussing the effects of racism through the prism of sport, his own experiences, and those of other stars, including Michael Johnson, Naomi Osaka, and his countryman, Usain Bolt. It wins many prizes.
youtube
youtube
He retired in 2021. The excellent Indian commentator, Harsha Bhogle described him as “cricket in rhythm,” but this is a disservice. Mikey Holding, Whispering Death, ended up using the eloquence and rhythm he played with for far more than just cricket.

★ HT Brunch Cover story: Kabir Khan’s crossover politics!
August 16, 2020
Anecdotes from the life of a documentary filmmaker, who easily transformed into making Bollywood blockbusters. How did he strike the balance?
Because he makes masala movies, most people tend to dismiss Kabir Khan as a director. True, he’s successful, they will agree. But he makes a certain kind of film targeted at a certain kind of an audience so, of course, he is successful.
But these people fail to recognise one crucial thing about Kabir Khan’s movies. That at the core of his masala entertainers, there is always a subtle, yet strong, political and social message.
Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015), for instance, was about borders. While it highlighted the human bond between the people of India and Pakistan, it also touched upon how people of a particular religion face ugly biases even while trying to rent a house. New York (2009) highlighted the illegal detention of Muslims in post 9/11 America. Phantom (2015) showed the aftermath of the 26/11 Mumbai attacks. This is a difficult thing to pull off in a Bollywood film. But Kabir Khan is an ace at messaging.
“As a director, I say what I want to with my movie. If a person can access the subtext, great! But on face value, the movie should hit the mark with its audience.”
“The main idea of making a movie is to provide entertainment,” Kabir explains. “But as a director, I also say what I want to say with my movie. If a person can access the subtext, great! But on face value, the movie should hit the mark with its audience.”
Tumblr media
The Salman factor
He followed it up with a bigger film, Ek Tha Tiger (2012), with superstar Salman Khan. This was Kabir’s third film while Salman Khan had had a good two decades of being Salman Khan. “So, of course the balance was hugely tilted!” Kabir laughs. “We had huge disagreements. Sometimes I would go overboard with my vision and sometimes he would get too mass-focused and had to be toned down, but we found a middle path.”
“Salman khan and I had huge disagreements [while shooting Ek Tha Tiger] but we found a middle path”
Though Salman often remained unconvinced about certain things, he always complied with the director’s vision. “He never came from the ‘Oh, I am the star, so you have to listen to whatever I say’ place. There was never arrogance. He would argue and sulk, but do it,” says Kabir. Perhaps Salman’s reputation as a brat on sets is too strong for most directors, Kabir muses. Perhaps they buy into the image so much that they don’t even try and push him.
But Kabir credits Salman for attempting a script like Bajrangi Bhaijaan. “It is essentially the movie of the little girl,” he points out. “There was nothing ‘hero’ like about Salman’s role. But he got so excited about the script that he even produced it! Although Salman never talks about politics and has an uneasy relationship with the press, his friends know just how conscious and concerned he is by what is going on. Salman’s politics are very similar to Bajrangi’s and I knew the script would resonate with him.”
Standing up for stars
Kabir has taken his own sweet time to get into the Bollywood groove; the songs in particular really foxed him. “I just couldn’t wrap my head around the very idea,” he says. “But while writing Bajrangi, I actually wrote songs into the script, and I didn’t have to force it!”
This does not mean the Bollywoodisation of Kabir Khan is finally complete. “I don’t care about box office numbers,” says the director whose Bajrangi Bhaijaan grossed ~300 crore, shaking his head about the corporatisation of Bollywood. “There are so many different parameters today that make these numbers,” says Kabir. “But I don’t make films for festivals either! I make movies for the mass audience and for myself. A filmmaker has to make a movie for himself first.”
“I don’t make films for festivals. I make them for the mass audience and for myself!”
However, Kabir does see value in international film festivals. “The idea is to highlight the uniqueness of cinema from various regions and there is a lot of interest for Bollywood as a genre,” he explains. “There is no point making an Indian film on the lines of Iranian cinema, because Iran is already making that! Why would you watch an Iranian movie that looks like a Korean movie? You will watch a Korean movie instead!”
A Bollywood movie is all about star power, and Kabir totally believes that is true. “Stars are stars because of their fan following; these are the people who will throng the theatres,” he points out. “Also, having a star makes it easier to get the money to make the film, which is crucial for a big budget movie.”
For instance, he explains, for his forthcoming movie, 83 (2020), he cast Ranveer Singh instead of a newcomer who looks more like Kapil Dev, so he could get the budget the film requires. In any case, most of the new stars are great actors, he says. “So it is a win-win situation. Ranveer is a brilliant actor! If he reminds you so much of Kapil Dev, it is not because of his make-up or prosthetics, it is because of Ranveer the actor. He has got the mannerisms spot on.”
And this is just the trailer. Picture abhi baaki hai, mere dost!

New Zealanders, Famous for Being Laid Back, Get on Top of Covid-19
Are New Zealanders as laid back as they are famous for? Thus went a query on Quora. Yes, in a nice way, said one software engineer who lived in New Zealand. Yes, agreed a New Zealand author too, but with a caveat – “Until you push us into a corner or do something we view as unfair or unjust. Then watch out. We are a warrior nation at heart. And we won’t back down from something that feels wrong to us.” One Indian software engineer disagreed and said ‘laid back’ should be substituted with ‘pragmatism’. The positive identity of New Zealanders is tied to Kiwi ingenuity as they often can come up with unconventional solutions to problems.
As an Indian, I only know the famous Kiwi cricketers as they were called until the term ‘Kiwi’ sort of came to be identified with a racist slant. Now they are Black Caps. Who can forget the famous and charismatic Richard Hadlee, one of the four great all-rounders of his time (Kapil Dev, Ian Botham and Imran Khan being the other three)? Then there was Martin Crowe, who stole our hearts with his beautiful cover drives, and also in the way he fought cancer and finally was consumed by it one day. Kane Williamson, the cool captain of the present New Zealand cricket team, stood like a rock when handed out what looked like an unfair defeat in the World Cup final in 2019. He said, “The players are shattered at the moment.”
New Zealand PM the Knight in the Country’s Shining Armour
Tumblr media
But the New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern didn’t let the nation get shattered when it needed her the most.
For a country of 4.91 million people today, with more than one-fourth of them overseas-born, Prime Minister Ardern’s response to the rampaging pandemic – that threatened the Britons to almost the brink and exposed the many deficiencies in their response – ensured that it was contained in a stellar way in this isolated nation, which in 1907 became self-governing Dominion of New Zealand under the British Crown. In 1983, the country technically severed the imperial connection through the new letter patent ‘Realm of New Zealand’, repealing the Imperial Letter Patent of 1917, and cut off the remaining link by removing the residual power of British Parliament to legislate for New Zealand by bringing in the Constitutional Act 1986. Always shadowed by its more famous trans-Tasman rival, Australia, New Zealand today has shown to the world what a determined leadership in a crisis can do. The kind and firm Prime Minister, who faced more crises in her short term at the helm, has proved much more capable of handling them superbly. The world stood up and took note of this centre-left Labour leader, who stitched up a delicate coalition to win the 2017 polls, when terrorists struck in a mosque in Christchurch in March 2019, as she led the nation in providing an empathetic leadership. Close on its heels came the Whaakari/White Island volcano eruption in December 2019 and Prime Minister Ardern again led the nation with determination.
Britain’s Feet of Clay and New Zealand’s Grip over the Situation
The Sunday Times from London made a scathing expose of the British government’s ‘laid back’ response to the coronavirus infections that was initially brushed off as non-threatening. The Times report alleged that the British Prime Minister Boris Johnson – who later was to get infected with the coronavirus necessitating his admission into the ICU of St. Thomas’ Hospital and who eventually recovered from Covid-19 – was taking it easy and holidaying, mired in personal problems of his life, at a crucial time period in late February when tough decisions such as a lockdown should have been made. Poor modelling and a belief in herd immunity, repeatedly parroted by the establishment as enough to take of the disease in itself, resulted in British government’s initial intrepid response. When the British PM finally woke up to strike a lockdown in late March, things were under water. The death toll in UK (in hospitals as of April 19, 2020) has crossed 15,000 and infections well over 100,000.
Tumblr media
While you could also take a sympathetic view that the British government, which sent as much as 270,000 pieces of support equipment to China on its request, did not foresee a worst situation as it eventually panned out, staying under the Covid-19 curve and then fighting it out. The situation seems overwhelming as the NHS is trying to procure enough PPEs and put in the required number of ICU beds. The good news is that people staying in hospitals from the Covid-19 disease is showing signs of tapering off. But the British government had to fight hard to bring the situation under its control, which seems to have not happened completely yet.
What makes New Zealand a role-model in its fight against coronavirus infections is the foresight with which the Prime Minister responded to the developing situation. Although, like many nations, New Zealand stopped incoming flights and people into the country late February, Prime Minister Ardern clamped a nationwide lockdown from March 25, 2020, a day after the British PM announced it from March 24, alarmed by the situation in Italy and Spain and modelling studies, which suggested 80,000 infections and 14,000 deaths if the situation goes unchecked in New Zealand. At that time, New Zealand had 102 cases of coronavirus infections and not a single death. The message to New Zealanders was “Act as if you have Covid-19. This will save lives.” The emphasis was on what was called a bubble – a smaller area where you could move around for biking and walking, say just your neighbourhood, with social distancing.
A Clear Elimination Strategy and Ashley Bloomfield a National Hero
As on April 19, 2020, only nine people have died from Covid-19 and 1431 infected with the coronavirus in New Zealand. Recoveries are at an impressive 912 cases. For a country of nearly 5 million people, there are only 519 active cases. New Zealand’s policy of ‘elimination’, rather than containment pursued by the United States and other Western nations, “is working,” reported the Washington Post in its report on April 7. A simple stat on this would make the situation clear: the number of new infections was lower than the number of recovered cases.

Tumblr media
In New Zealand’s fight against the pandemic. at the forefront is the nation’s Director General of Health, Dr. Ashley Bloomfield, whose press conferences – at times addressed alongside Prime Minister Ardern – have become a huge hit among New Zealanders for the precise way in which he delivers data. It even prompted New Zealanders to make him New Zealander of the Year 2021 for his “competent, calm and factual” updates. But he is humble enough to say, “I am lucky to be part of a fantastic team.”

On April 6, Tess Nicole called Ashley Bloomfield “the country’s unassuming rock star.”

Typical New Zealander Coming to the Fore
“New Zealand is a low-context country,” said Rosie, host of the YouTube channel, NotEvenFrench, in one of her YouTube videos. Rosie is a New Zealander who lives in Paris with her French partner. She says New Zealanders are open, warm and friendly and believe in clear and straightforward communication. And they are casual in their dress sense too, she emphasised, preferring flip-flops and even walking barefoot. “New Zealand is a beautiful country,” she points out and there cannot be two views on that. Bountiful nature is spread across New Zealand, uninhibited in some parts, with only the cities and urban areas a bit dense with populace.
Prime Minister Ardern uses the characteristic New Zealander trait of open and clear communication. She takes pains to explain, repeat and emphasise. She is active on Facebook and goes Facebook live to delve into questions posed by the people of her country. When announcing the lockdown on March 23, she clearly explained the rules of the lockdown. And when the imminent end of the lockdown is slated for April 22, a month after it was clamped, the New Zealand PM has started explaining the rules for relaxation from level 4 (complete lockdown) to level 3 (lockdown with some relaxations but strict on social distancing). She gets to the bottom of it, clearly explaining the implications of various scenarios, including what it would mean to scale down to level 3 and what precautions that the country has to take to adhere to those. She also cautions that a revert to level 4 might happen if there are flagrant violations.
New Zealand’s Future
The New Zealand government has also understood the pain of its countrymen during the lockdown and Finance Minister Grant Robertson announced a series of concessions including a six-month holiday on principal and tax on mortgages. The Government also plans to implement a business finance guarantee for small and medium businesses to protect jobs and support the economy in the unprecedented times.
https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-newzealand-banks/new-zealand-announces-mortgage-holiday-business-finance-support-to-cushion-virus-impact-idUSKBN21B0CA
But as everywhere, economic slump is a worrying outcome of the lockdown. And how economy will fare during the lockdown and after the lockdown is lifted is a challenge that the New Zealand government is confronted with. New Zealand is slated to go to polls in September 2020, and if Jacinda Ardern would pull it off again also remains to be seen.
Cricket-crazy Indians little realise that rugby is a religion in New Zealand. And the country won the Rugby World Cup in 2015. There was a YouTube video released then: The Greatest haka ever?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yiKFYTFJ_kw
Well, for now, it could be the greatest haka seeing the way Jacinda Ardern and Dr. Ashley Bloomfield are leading the Covid-19 campaign for the All Blacks.

Ross Taylor registered his name in the history of cricket as he has become New Zealand’s highest run-scorer in cricket’s longest format. The New-Zealand cricketer achieved it after scoring three runs through mid-on following the tea break on the fourth day of the third Test match against the Australia team.
India’s World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev celebrated his 61st birthday on Monday (that is on January 6, 2020). He is widely regarded as the greatest all-rounder to ever don the Indian Jersey and is arguably considered as one of the greatest Indian Cricketer till date.
The New Zealand Batsman Leo Carter hit six 6s in an over on Sunday against the Northern Nights team. In 16th over of the second innings, this historical movement took place. And the former Indian All rounder Yuvraj Singh has welcomed him to the sixes club in his instagram story.
In the second T20I against Ireland. Sheldon Cottrell, the Windies cricketer, blasted a six off the penultimate ball to help West Indies win a thrilling one-wicket victory. With his penultimate ball six, Cottrell became the first no. 11 batsman to finish an ODI with a six.
MS Dhoni, took a break from cricket after the end of India’s World Cup campaign following its loss in the semi-final to New Zealand in July 2019. MS Dhoni’s future in cricket has been a subject of discussion for quite some time now.Ravi Shastri, the cricket coach of the Indian cricket team, said that former captain M.S. Dhoni might retire from ODIs soon in order to concentrate on playing T20 cricket
Kohli was in Pune to play the third and final T20 match that was held between Sri Lanka and India. He used the Twitter platform to state that chole bhature was his cheat meal in a comical analogy. He compared his favorite food to the concentration and focus required while facing a bowler. He tweeted that the ball out of the bowler’s hand and chholle bhature for a cheat meal deserve the same focus. With this, he added a picture from his training session on Thursday.
Australia's Big Bash League (BBL) produced another brilliant moment of fielding on Saturday in the match between Sydney Thunder and the Hobart Hurricanes. Hobart's Nathan Ellis showed great reflexes to hang on to a catch to dismiss Usman Khawaja after he originally misjudged the ball coming his way.
Ishant Sharma posted a picture of himself on Instagram and captioned it "you only live once". Virat Kohli quickly came up with a cheeky comment on Ishant's post. "hamein toh pata hi nahi tha (which translates to we did not know this)," Kohli left a comment on Instagram. The India skipper's cheeky dig at the fast-bowler's post left fans in splits.
Team India got an injury scare when a ball hits the thumb of Rohit Sharma during a practice session.Rohit got hit on his right thumb when he was practicing at the nets in Mumbai.
It’s all over!! India defeated Sri Lanka by 78 runs in the third and final T20I to win the three match series in Pune on Friday.

Happy Birthday Amitji
Amitabh Bachchan completes 77 years and 50 years of entertaining us.
It was 1969 he made his debut. I was just 5 years old.
In 1970 we left for Brighton England for my Fathers doctorate, ( before which in 1969 a superstar came on the horizon in form of Rajesh Khanna
I remember the last movie we saw before leaving India was Aradhana).
We were in England for almost 4 years. So I missed the phenomena of Rajesh Khanna and the blooming of Amitabh Bachchan.
I remember the first movie I saw was Roti Kapada aur Makaan it was 1974 at Heer Palace Kanpur. I fell in love with the charismatic character of Vijay .
His journey from a unruly youth to the army where he looses his arm( my father used to tease me for many days as Dunda Haath Chalaaye Bandook ) was very well depicted by him under the direction of Manoj Kumar. The way he drives the motorcycle with the accelerator between his teeth. I was overwhelmed , His anger was so genuine.
The second movie I remember was Benaam. A suspense thriller and my admiration for him increased.
This was followed by reruns of Anand Namak Haraam and Abhimaan at our L7  auditorium at IIT Kanpur ( as they had been released when we were abroad )
I used to ask my parents to take me to see his releases.
Those were the days of advance booking and being away from the main city many times we could not get tickets to his movies..
We had to try thrice before we could see Deewar and Sholay both released in the year of emergency 1975.
Faraar, Chupke Chupke and Mili were the first movies I saw more than once in those days as a 11 year old. Thankfully for me my parents also were movie buffs. ( Obviously I could not go alone then but started doing so 4 years later )
Something which came to me genetically as my grandmother also was a movie fan. We used to see movies over the fortnight.
After almost 2and half months during my Diwali Vacation of 1975, we finally got tickets to Sholay at Sundar theatre. The movie then was ruthlessly edited with Asranis scenes as also Jayas Holi Scenes being cut . But that movie had a great impact on me, esp the character of Jai.
It was later in 1976 in its Golden Jubilee week I we saw Deewaar.
After Deewar I was totally smitten with Amitji, I used to tie a knot on my shirt like he did. Since then somehow or the other I saw every movie released.
In 1978 we shifted to Pune.
In Pune I realised that theatres were not so far as in Kanpur and I had a cycle.
In 1979 in 9th Standard I bunked school and went to see The Great Gambler ( which my parents would not allow as it was for Adults ). In Pune I understood the concept of Advance Booking, where bookings for a movie used to open on Monday and if one wished to see a film First day then that booking needed to be done.
In vacations we used to go my Dads Hometown of Washim ( then in Akola, now a district ) , there we had a theatre owned by a trust of which my grandfather was a trustee. Movies were free for us and seats were reserved for trustees.
Used to love going to the movies there but my memory brightens up when I remember that I saw Muqaddar Ka Sikander 4 times on the trot in 4 days, including once ( Interval to Interval ). Sholay I saw there 5 times in a week, this was thankfully the uncut version .
It is a well-known chapter of Indian film history beginning with the release of Prakash Mehras Zanjeer in 1973 which turned Amitabh into a goldmine.
This movie I finally got to see first on DD and in the theatre as late as 1980 during a re-run. Smouldering in the Salim-Javed dialogues and refracted through the Amitabh flamboyance fired the imagination of a whole nation as nothing had ever done before a trend which was carried ahead in Deewar, Sholay,Trishul, Don, Kaala Pathhar, Shaan, Shakti.
Movies then used to release phase wise first in Metros and a week or even later in other cities . Pune normally movies released a week later than Mumbai
And Lonawala used to come in the Mumbai circuit. I used to take a local to Lonawala to see Amitabhs movies. Once for Yaarana the tickets were not available in Black also , I took a ride at the back of a truck and went till Khopoli and saw the movie. Similarly Kaalia also I saw at Lonawala.
From Pune used to go for Summer Vacations to Mumbai and saw many movies there. Namak Halaal, Dostana, Desh Premee, Mahaan were all seen there.
Once I decided to go and visit his house, then Prateeksha. I had gone alone and after I reached just looked at the house in awe.
I always used to think if I could ever meet him, see him.
Thats a long story and long time ahead.
One incident I remember that in 1991, my father was travelling from Delhi to Mumbai,( and from Mumbai to Pune by road, as Pune airport was not functional then). On reaching home he asked me during dinner , guess who was next to me on the flight ( He was eligible for Business Class then ). I couldnt guess and he told me, your favourite Amitabh Bachchan. I was zapped, I said Dad did you get his autograph ? Dad replied, why should I , Iam not his fan, when you meet him, take it .
Cut to 1994 , I had won the All India award for Best Sales performance and the award was to be given at Mumbai. We were invited to Mumbai and put up at Ajantha Ambassador hotel. We were to join the team from Pune as they started from Sangli by Mahalaxmi express which reached Pune at 6am, we found that very early and decided to come by Deccan Queen which reached Mumbai by 10.30 am. As I reached the Hotel, I saw a Mercedes Van coming out of the gate, I wowed it and came to the reception where my colleague Pravin Rayate greeted me with.. You should have come a bit earlier, Amitabh Bachchan was in the lobby to pick up Jaya Ji {who had her office on the second floor ( Saraswati Audiovisuals, the makers of the TV hit seriel Dekh Bhai Dekh )}. So I Mercedes I saw was his and if I had taken Mahalaxmi express and come, I would have met him. It was not to be. It dampened the spirits of my award ( which I received two days later at Taj from the hands of Adi.B and Nadir.B Godrej .
The Journey moved on..
Insipte of the ups and downs, odds and evens Amitabhs box-office records can be described only in superlatives. Producers and distributors seemed to believe still that even a flop with Amitabhs name on the marquee is a good enough grosser, which was proved by the trade.
His image of the angry young man had viewers reeling under the magic of neorealism, where dream and daydream coalesced in a brave new world. The myriad manifestations of Amitabhs no-holds-barred rebellion offered a blissful release to the repressions of a whole generation. The star became a cult figure of radical dynamism, of iconoclastic change. He was no stranger to the seaminess of street life. His idealism rose not from birth or class, but from action. His avatars recurred in shanties and ghettos, in the underworld dens and among the dregs of humanity. There he battled with the predators of the concrete jungle for survivalhis belligerence hiding a tender heart, family virtues, human kindliness. He was the ultimate good man, often turned bad by circumstances, whose atonement came through self-sacrificeoften unto gory, long-drawn death.
So from Zanjeer through Deewar, Sholay, Mukaddar ka Sikandar, Shahenshah, Inderjeet, Agneepath and Akayla, to Khuda Gawah, the Amitabh archetype continues to reflect variations on a simplistic mould, magnified to a brilliant potency; it has now become part of the collective psyche of a nation of filmgoers. It was the perfect antidote to the dystopian nightmare of modern mechanistic existence, especially in the less cynical times of the recent past. Amitabh individuates his roles with the utmost confidence and conviction. He makes the unsubtle seem subtle, touches the crass with class, makes melodrama credible. Certainly, no other Indian actor had the speaking eyes and spellbinding voice to infuse nuanced suggestivity into stereotypical situations. His finesse did not alienate his characters from the masses.
In the mid 90s he moved towards central Character roles the catalyst being Mohobattein.
Then came the super hit T.V. show Kaun Banega Carorepati anchored by Amitabh. It gave an entire new life to his career which was under the dark shadow.
Finally out of the blue came the date, 12th November 2018.
The prelude to this date was the fact that I had connected to Amitji on all his social media accounts , also my senior colleague Dr Manoj Mehta who was an active participant of ABEF ( Amitabh Bachchan extended Family ), offered us a chance to be a spectator at the KBC show , we ( My friend / ex senior from Godrej Sanjay Pandey, and current colleague Kapil Sharma ) . The date was 12th November. It was the last week of shooting of that season. We reached the sets at Film City at 2 pm sharp but had a long wait till 8pm till we were finally seated, alas in the third row. It was another wait for an hour before the shoot began. Finally at @ 9.00pm he came in a Maroon Suit, seeing him I froze.. There he was some 25 feet away from me. Very interactive with the crowd, very sportive, responding to our comments and jokes. How almost 4 hours past, and it was well after 12am that the photos he has with the audience started and well after 1 am that he left. Look at his dedication reached the sets at 9 am completed 2 episode shoots and left at 1 am. He had just turned 76 then. I had finally seen with my eyes, my hero , my idol, or even if I may say My god.
But better things were ahead, The 2019 edition of KBC started in August 2019.
We had epressed our wish to be a participant again. It was 18th July, at 7.12 pm got a message from Dr Manoj that we could attend the shoot on 6th August as the show restarted on 5th August. This time the procedure was different. There was an online procedure which need to be followed up with the invite.
We did that. But July end, rains started in Mumbai and Pune, everywhere there were spells of flooding, roads closed. Sanjay and Myself were the only two left from Pune and a friend of Sanjay, Kailash Agarwal was to jpin us at Mumbai.
The forecast was rains, we debated till late evening weather to go or quit, but the urge of seeing him was so much that we decided to take the risk.
We reached at 3 pm sharp , but this time there wasnt a long wait. We enrolled ourselves and it was an hour and half later that we were inside. This time being enrolled from the ABEF , we got privileged entry, and were in the first row.
Oh what a feeling it was !! Another hour Later Big B made his majestic entry. Again he was interactive with the crowd, and the shooting ended at 8.30 pm.
Then the photographs moments came. Finally he was in front of me, I had taken a token gift for him, which he accepted. Took his Biography along which he autographed. I was trembling in joy as I shook hands with him, talked to him, it lasted a minute but the emotions were beyond eternity.
Finally at the age of 55 and 45 years later I got to meet him.
Nobody else ever had this deadly combination of unmatched talent and charisma and nobody else will ever have it in future. Then there was style, polish and a great deal of seclusion encouraging rumours and augmenting the aura. Anyway one looked at it, the man radiates power. To recapitulate there has only been one super star in India, and that is Amitabh Bachchan.

The most effective ones they permit pass of have been either too pricey like Jadhav or Chawla, or underutilized gamers. They would have retained Watson, however, regrettably, he retired from all kinds of cricket.
analyzing CSK’s performance inside the public sale, they got two strong gamers in the form of Moeen Ali and Krishnappa Gowtham. both suit CSK’s strengths and bring a lot of price to the desk. aside from those, CSK sold middle-order batsman, Cheteshwar Pujara, all-rounder Bhagath Varma, opener CH Nishaanth, and pacer Harishankar Reddy

Moeen Ali, who was acquired through for 7 crores can be a very good aggressive choice to play inside the middle-order. moreover, CSK wished an offspinner, and Ali is the actually the correct option for that.

Chandigarh, June 18, 2020, Thursday
When it comes to the achievements of Indian cricket, fans remember Kapil Dev's innings against Zimbabwe, which made India the world champions in 1983. Kapil Dev led India to an unbeaten 12-run unbeaten innings in a difficult one-day international against Zimbabwe on 19 June 1983. This innings has instilled confidence in Indian cricketers that Kapil Dev can win in any adverse situation.
Skipper Kapil Dev's team did well in the 1983 World Cup in England, but India's league batting line-up faltered in a league match against relatively inexperienced and weak Zimbabwe. India lost 6 for 6 and the fifth for 15.
Tumblr media
The best batsmen including Sunil Gavaskar, Srikanth, Mohinder Amarnath, Sandeep Patil, Yashpal Sharma were dismissed and returned to the pavilion when Kapil Dev handled the match as a captain with one hand. Kapil scored 12 not out off 12 balls with the help of 14 fours and 3 sixes. This is not only Kapil Dev's first century in ODI cricket in India, but also the fourth most individual (16) run record of any cricketer in the game. After Kapil's 19, the second highest score was by wicketkeeper Syed Kirmani with 4 runs. Kirmani was accompanied by Kapil Dev's 14 runs with the help of India's score of 2 wickets 3 runs. Zimbabwe came on the field to cross the 6-run target but India won by 21 runs after being bowled out for 4.
Winning the match against Zimbabwe was crucial to reach the semi-finals of the World Cup. Kapil won the toss and elected to bat first, but Zimbabwe's fast bowlers Peter Rosen and Kevin Curran dismissed the Indians early. The cameramen and technicians were on strike at the time, so the telecast of this historic match between India and Zimbabwe did not show Kapil Dev's great innings of 19 runs.

Going by India’s past record in one-day internationals and in the World Cup, they were not expected to even progress beyond the Group stage of the 1983 Cricket World Cup which was yet again held in England, despite having the likes of Sunil Gavaskar, Krishnamachari Srikkanth, Dilip Vengsarkar, Yashpal Sharma and Sandeep Patil in batting and a decent set of all-rounders in captain Kapil Dev, who was now one of the best all-rounders in world cricket, Mohinder Amarnath, Madan Lal, Ravi Shastri and Roger Binny. This time, the tournament format was slightly different from the previous editions. Teams were still divided among 2 groups of 4, but now each team in a group played each other twice. India were placed in Group B in the Group stage, which was considered to be the tougher of the 2 groups as it included 2 stronger opponents in the defending champions, the West Indies, whose dominance in world cricket at the time was at its peak, and Australia. World Cup debutants Zimbabwe were also in the group. The fact that the West Indies and Australia were in India’s group only worsened India’s prospects of putting a decent showing this time around. India’s first match in the tournament was against the West Indies at Old Trafford in Manchester. The West Indians were expected to steamroll India, but India caused a massive upset, winning the game by 34 runs in a match spread over 2 days. Middle-order batsman Sharma withstood the West Indian pace attack to score a fine half-century (89 from 120 balls, 9 fours) as India scored 262/8. Then, a disciplined performance from the Indian bowlers led by all-rounders Binny (3/48) and Shastri (3/26) ensured that the West Indian batsmen could not settle down after their starts, as a result of which the West Indies were bowled all out for 228. India followed this victory with another win against Zimbabwe at Leicester. In a one-sided match, India, bowling first, restricted Zimbabwe to 155 with Madan Lal taking 3/27, following which a half-century by Patil (50 from 54 balls, 7 fours, 1 six) ensured that India chased down the paltry total easily. However, despite the good start, 2 consecutive defeats against Australia at Trent Bridge in Nottingham and the West Indies at The Oval in London followed, and with other results going Australia’s and the West Indies’ way, India were once again staring at another early exit from the World Cup. Trevor Chappell scored 110 to ensure that Australia scored a mammoth 320/9, with India dishing out a listless bowling performance. Only Kapil bowled well, taking a 5-wicket haul (5/43). Australian medium-pacer Ken MacLeay took 6/39 as India were bowled all out for just 150, losing by 162 runs, with none of the Indian batsmen contributing. Against the West Indies, India, chasing 283 to win, never really got going despite Amarnath’s patient knock (80 from 139 balls). A combined effort from the West Indian pace attack saw India crash to 216 all out, losing by 66 runs. To add to India’s woes, Vengsarkar was ruled out for the rest of the tournament after a Malcolm Marshall bouncer injured his jaw. To reach the semifinals now, India had to beat Zimbabwe and Australia by huge margins, a daunting prospect. Should India lose even one of the matches, they would be knocked out of the tournament. India began their match against Zimbabwe at Tunbridge Wells on 18 June 1983 disastrously. The Zimbabwean bowling attack, led by Peter Rawson (3/47) and Kevin Curran (3/65), destroyed the Indian top order, reducing them to 17/5. A massive upset by the Zimbabweans and another early exit for India was now very much on the cards, until Kapil arrived. Kapil completely changed the course of the match with a breathtaking innings (175 not out from 138 balls, 16 fours, 6 sixes). With the support of the tailenders, he ransacked the Zimbabwean bowling as he played his most famous innings, which was also the highest individual score in ODI cricket at the time and the first ever ODI century scored by an Indian batsman. As a result of his astounding knock, India finished the innings at 266/8. Then, a good performance with the ball from Madan Lal (3/42) saw Zimbabwe being bowled all out for 235, despite Curran’s 73, to set up a famous win. Unfortunately, this match was not telecasted live due to a strike by the BBC staff on that day. But India’s woes weren’t over yet; they needed to beat Australia comprehensively to have any hope of reaching the semifinals. India’s must-win match against the Aussies took place at Chelmsford, two days after the famous victory against Zimbabwe. Despite Rodney Hogg (3/40) and Jeff Thomson (3/51) taking 3 wickets each, a combined effort from the Indian batsmen saw India reach 247 all out. Australia, chasing 248 to win, were rocked by the innocuous but penetrative medium-pace of Madan Lal (4/20) and Binny (4/29) and crashed to 129 all out, losing the match by a whopping 118 runs. With another win under their belt, India finished second in their group and qualified for the semifinals for the first time ever in the Cricket World Cup. India’s semifinal match was against hosts England at Manchester. Despite England being the favourites, India produced yet another upset. England won the toss and batted first. Despite an opening stand of 69, the English batsmen mistimed many balls and used the bat’s edge frequently, as the restrictive Indian bowling led England to 213 all out. English opener Graeme Fowler top scored with 33. Kapil Dev was the pick of the Indian bowlers (3/35), with Amarnath (2/27) and Binny (2/43) also being among the wickets. In reply, Sharma (61 from 115 balls, 3 fours, 2 sixes) and Sandeep Patil (51 not out from 32 balls, 8 fours) made half-centuries, with Amarnath (46 from 92 balls, 4 fours, 1 six) too contributing, as India reached their target comfortably, winning by 6 wickets in a classic victory over the hosts. Amarnath picked up the Man of the Match award for his all-round performance. This win brought India to the World Cup final for the very first time, which was to be played against the West Indies on 25 June 1983 at Lord’s in London. A third consecutive tournament victory for the West Indies was widely predicted by most pundits and fans. In the final, India lost the toss and were made to bat first on a seaming wicket against the mighty West Indian pace attack. Only Srikkanth (38 from 57 balls, 7 fours and 1 six) and Amarnath (26 from 80 balls, 3 fours) put up any significant resistance as the West Indian fast bowling attack comprising Marshall (2/24), Andy Roberts (3/32), Joel Garner (1/24) and Michael Holding (2/26) ripped through the Indian batting, ably supported by part-timer Larry Gomes (2/49). Only surprising resistance by the tail allowed India to reach 183 all out in the 55th over. It seemed to be all over for India, as the West Indies had a power-packed batting line-up comprising openers Gordon Greenidge and Desmond Haynes, followed by Vivian Richards and captain Clive Lloyd which was capable of destroying any bowling attack and were widely expected to make mincemeat out of the “mediocre” Indian bowling attack. Despite the early loss of Greenidge, Haynes and Richards steadied the innings and the West Indies was soon cruising to another World Cup win at 57/2. At this stage, Kapil ran a great distance (18-20 yards) to take the wicket of Richards off Madan Lal’s bowling. This proved to be the turning point of the match, as the Indian bowling then exploited the weather and pitch conditions perfectly to blow away the rest of the West Indian batting. Amarnath (3/12) and Madan Lal (3/31) took three wickets each, as the West Indies crashed to 140 all out in the 53rd over, setting up a famous tournament victory for India which was one of the biggest upsets not only in cricket, but in sport in general. India’s win ended the title defence of the West Indies, who never reached the final of the Cricket World Cup again. Amarnath was awarded a second consecutive Man of the Match award for another all-round effort. http://bit.ly/2Xe0W6x
