Augill Castle
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Augill Castle is located in Cumbria, England. Built in 1841 By John Pearson as a weekend retreat. John was the eldest brother of two, and allegedly after an argument, he wanted to build a house bigger and better than his brother’s. The castle boasts turrets, mullioned windows, castellated towers, and ornate lattice windows. The interior has a servants’ hall, kitchens, larders, a pantry, a drawing room, a great hall, a sitting room, a library, turret wardrobes, claw-footed tubs, and stained-glass windows. In 1997, Simon and Wendy Bennett purchased the run-down Victorian country house. The Bennett’s renovated the castle, and it currently serves as a family-run boutique hotel with The Music Room restaurant and The Great British Bar. The castle sits on twenty acres with gardens. Augill Castle has thirteen bedrooms, suites, and cottages in which to stay.

Doom Tuba - Fellfoot Sounds
I’ve been exploring the Eden Valley for, on and off, for the past four decades. Visitors to Cumbria often overlook this beautiful area which is rich in prehistory and scenic beauty. For me this isn’t a bad thing because it means I can travel around visiting sites without having to deal with lots of people, but that is a selfish view. The local economy could do with a few more visitors spending…

River Eden Cumbria
flickr
River Eden Cumbria by Adam Swaine Via Flickr: The River Eden is entirely Cumbrian and is one of the few large rivers in England that flows northwards. The source of the river is on the high limestone fells above Mallerstang Common, near the North Yorkshire border, and makes its way across eastern Cumbria, with the hills of the North Pennines to the East, and the fells of the Lake District to the west, to Carlisle. River Eden, river in northern England. It rises in the fells (uplands) that connect the Lake District with the highlands of the Pennines and flows 90 miles (145 km) northwestward to its estuary in the Solway Firth, an Irish Sea inlet. From Kirkby Stephen, where its narrow, steep-sided upper valley opens out into the lowland vale, it flows in a meandering course among moraine hummocks (mounds of glacial debris) past Appleby, which is sited on a river peninsula. It receives short, swift right-bank tributaries from the great escarpment of the Pennines and longer left-bank tributaries from the Lake District
