Doom Tuba - Fellfoot Sounds
Iâve been exploring the Eden Valley for, on and off, for the past four decades. Visitors to Cumbria often overlook this beautiful area which is rich in prehistory and scenic beauty. For me this isnât a bad thing because it means I can travel around visiting sites without having to deal with lots of people, but that is a selfish view. The local economy could do with a few more visitors spendingâŠ

Buffet Lunch â The Power of Rocks (Upset the Rhythm)
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/a074723266f5d3c18d1596ea7e680a0c/ed501452540dc9b0-e9/s540x810/9b3ea5e07a60035ddc3f043accdf231da598880c.jpg)
youtube
Buffet Lunch has mastered the art of cheery, chaotic insanity, threading nonsense words into ebullient spoke-sung verses while clever saxophone blurts and wheedling keyboards wreath their melodies in happy abandon. Behind this smiling, showman-like façade, the whole endeavor frays and tears at itself, guitar lines jittering off at angles to one another, as a bass bobs up to be heard. The interplay of instruments is both precise and full of entropy, as if, at any moment, the whole Rube Goldberg contraption could fall in on itself in pings and rattles and small explosions.
Consider, for instance, âRed Apple Happiness,â which dances clumsily to rooty-tooting saxophone and sticks on rims, shifting its weight ponderously from foot to foot like a bear that has recently learned to cake walk. The vocals are a precisely timed shout, unvarying in pitch but flexible enough in emphasis. The singer (so to speak) Perry OâBray ties up each phrase in a neat bow of rhyming, as the song honks and chortles and winks at us. Yet even so, there are hints of trouble in one guitar rattling away its anxieties and a zig-zagging sax line that canât seem to find its bearings. And yet, what could be more charming than a cheerful song tipped on its side, all efforts to please intact but coming from such a very odd angle?
Buffet Lunch is a Scottish four-piece, made up of OâBray plus Neil Robinson on bass, John Muir on guitar and Luke Moran on drums. With a couple of EPs and a string of live shows under their collective belts, the band set out to record in the rural north of Scotland in March 2020 and made much of this album in isolation while the rest of the world careened into pandemic and lockdown. They were mostly done when they went home to the lockdown, but OâBray recorded two ringers afterwards with Jayne Dent, the ethereal, dreamlike, melodic and wholly not-like-the-rest songs, âTen Timesâ and âAshleyâs Haircut,â which were then sent round to band members for remote contributions. Â As a result, there are two distinct types of songs on The Power of Rocks: the herky-jerky, dada-ist contraptions described in the first two paragraphs and a sort of luminous dream pop that might remind you of the Green Child.
âAs soon as a chunk is bitten/youâll see that real lifeâs/inside with the pips,â OâBray confides in âRed Apple Happiness,â inviting us all behind the surfaces to the messy vitality within. The accompanying video (above) is even stranger than the song, with brightly colored blob people playing a board game and pointing rhythmically toward an apple. Â And yet, it is all rather inviting, rather endearing, rather cheerful. You end up smiling, not knowing exactly why.

Exclusive Granite Counter-top
I have been getting more and more questions about our counter-tops in our new kitchen. I am going to be sharing my honest 100% opinion on my Granite Counter-tops and my Granite block counters. Why I have both and how they are doing 7 months into living with them. This of course is my counter-top review and does not mean everyone will be happy with my choices. I do believe they are each timeless classic looks for that French Farmhouse kitchen style that I designed.
I wanted a casual feel to our kitchen but also wanted something that never felt outdated. Considering I change my mind every ten seconds I needed to select a kitchen that I wouldnât get bored with and since we are tapped out on moolah, I needed to make sure they were finishes that would last too. This post contains some affiliate links for your convenience.
Well, Granite is a scary word to most people! I remember a year ago when we were planning for our kitchen how many people tried talking me out of Granite. I did my own research about it, talked with my kitchen designer about it, and tried finding the best match of quartz (since that was the durable material) or granite (a little more durable than Granite but still natural) that I could. I even considered soapstone since I absolutely love it as well, but ultimately decided I would get less sick of light counters than I would dark counters so I swayed back to the Granite. I also considered Granite which I fell in love with too, but it felt âfancierâ to me and Granite just felt more timeless, subtle, and paired well with the Farmhouse vibe of my kitchen.
Proâs to Granite:
So, letâs talk a little about the pros to Granite that I have personally found with having them in our home. The look! I mean this alone sells me every morning when I wake up. I love the veining, the timelessness, and the pureness of Granite. There is nothing quite like that true deep veining, color, and simplicity. The color is a true white and a true cool Black. I wanted that contrast with my greige color cabinets, that I felt quartz was just not going to provide. The more I looked at quartz the more I kept falling more in love with Granite. Not to mention real stone is trending again!
So, yes the look is what sells me every day! So, what else??? The coolness to touch is also something I appreciate about the Granite. The price was also way better than quartz. Quartz being on high demand is now more expensive that real stone. How can that be? I thought that was nuts when I first heard about it, but it totally makes sense. Iâm not quite sure the percentage of kitchen renovations that prefer quartz over real stone or other material, but I am sure itâs quite a bit. So, knowing I was getting a more luxurious product for cheaper was another selling factor for me.
Proâs to Granite Block
Well, with the Granite being a cool and more luxurious product, I wanted something not only to balance my bank account but also my fancy meets casual kitchen. The room needed something that would warm up the space and having the warm wood Granite block feel would definitely create that balance. Our island is 9âČ long so the counter was going to be a big chunk of money too. We looked at a few options but I kept coming back to images of kitchens with Granite block counters. We chose white oak so it has less âyellow or redâ in it and would mesh well with our flooring.
One of the questions I get all the time is how durable is my Granite block. Well, we had ours sealed through the counter-top company for long lasting wear and tear. It makes it super durable where I can clean it with just about anything and do just about anything on it. I needed that balance because Granite was not a durable surface so it was important to have a surface space in the kitchen that was. Having an island where the kids eat meals, snacks, and do homework on without flinching was important. I love the look of the wood for that Farmhouse feel and it also acts as a large table for us too.
Cons to Granite:
Well, as you all heard and Iâve been told Granite is not durable. Guess whatâŠitâs not! But there are ways to make it work.
#1. Seal your counter-tops with what your counter supplier suggests (I sealed mine twice already and plan to seal them once more this year- so exâs a year is good). This is the one I use!
#2 Have a mix of counters so prepping and food items that ruin Granite can be avoided. That means no wine on my Granite and no lemon! The two products I am always most concerned about. We have a few lemon marks already but fortunately as time goes on, they seep into the Granite a bit. The soda my son spilled last month, not much I can do about them cup rings (I lost my mind a bit that night).
#3 Clean with Granite and stone countertop cleaner ONLY! Hereâs the one I use!
#4 Make sure never to use the sponge you use to clean dishes on the counters. There could be left over acidic juices and weâve learned this the hard way too.
#5 Avoid moving items around on counter or placing anything abrasive that can scratch. We have one good scratch also from my son- clearly the rule âstay off the Graniteâ gets broken here and there.
#6 Be careful with edges of counter. We have had some slight chipping from taking items out of sink and placing into dishwasher.
So, yes this is a lot of upkeepâŠprobably annoying for most people, but if you are a Granite lover like myself having those scratches and marks on your counter still make it worth it. Remember Granite has been around since forever embracing the imperfections is what makes for a timeless look. I do agree though this is not for everyone. You totally have to babysit it, and let go of every ding and stain. I will say I would never have an entire kitchen with Granite.
The Granite works because I have the two materials (Granite and Granite block) to help with less wear and tear on the Granite. I have become that crazy lady to put up signs during a party like no wine or keep off the Granite. Some stains do fade over time and if they arenât in a ring form you may not ever really notice. I also have the honed Granite which helps best with etching where polished Granite etching is more noticeable. I believe it taking care of the products in your home and this just means you have to take extra care.
Cons with Granite Block:
There really is not that much cons when it comes to the Granite block unless you just donât love the look of it. We have some splintering and if you choose not to use a cutting board to cut something you can get dents and scratches. Other than that, I have nothing bad to say about it. I love the warmth and the casual feel it brings, but if you do want a fancier or glamorous feel to your kitchen Granite block may not be first choice.
I hope this was very helpful for those of you that are considering one or both of these materials for your kitchen. I wouldnât have it any other way. Only last bit of helpful tip I would say is if you consider doing a Granite back splash as Iâve done behind our range, keep in mind the color darkens when itâs vertical. That has been one little issue that Iâve had with my Granite because it does look a little bluer gray than I had wanted-so keep that in mind!

Ah, I didnât know Granite was that fragile. I was thinking about it as we plan to Reno out kitchen in the next two years but my husband loves to cook and heâs like a bull in a china shop so we definitely need something more durable. I swear the guy is like the Swedish Chef when he cooks and whatever is on the stove is all over the stove, back splash, counters, floor. I drove me crazy when we first met but he likes to cook and Iâm okay with that!
Answer from us
Nicole I can totally relate! My husband is totally accident prone and he makes me very nervous around the Granite. We have been able to manage but every stain and mark I have to remember itâs part of the process of being a Granite owner.

I believe this is the first really honest review I have seen
about Granite. I am single without any children and really wanted Granite
when I purchased a 50-year-old house with laminate counter tops. I kept reading reviews and, in the end, I decided against it and chose quartz. I have never regretted that decision and if someone is not prepared to do the maintenance there are some excellent quartz counters out there that will give you the Granite looks. I will say cost probably depends on what area of the country you reside as I found quartz definitely cheaper than the Granite in my Place.
Thank you for letting people know how a real family lives with Granite. I do think in time you will not even notice those stains and you will still love your Granite. However, you are correct that it isnât for everyone.

Love your honesty. Like you I love the life in natural stone. We are building our retirement home and after much studying and research Iâm going with granite for our back counter-tops and black honed granite for our island.
Your Granite counter-tops are gorgeous and timeless. This is how I feel about the white ice granite we have choose, it is timeless!

I have a question about the Granite? I had it in the past but found when food was spilled and allowed to dry on it (didnât wipe the spill immediately), then I couldnât get it up without using the scratchy side of the sponge and then that left scratch marks in the wood. Have you experienced this or does your sealing of the Granite take care of that?

August 24, 2019 at 9:20 pm
Hi Carol, I have not experienced this, but ours was sealed by the manufacturer so I do think there is a difference in the finish. I love an unfinished Granite counter, but I wanted a surface that would be durable for every day.

I renovated my kitchen eight years ago. Like you, I wanted a timeless look. Kitchens are a huge expense, so you donât want to be doing it often unless your bank account allows. Mine does not! đą I did think about Granite (love it in otherâs kitchens) but being a perfectionist, I knew the inevitable staining, scoring and chipping would bother me, so I went with a light granite. I love it! My hubby topcoats it once a year. I can sit anything on it including hot pots. I donât have to worry about guests setting down wet glasses or dropping salsa on it. Anything precious is not safe around my husband, no coasters for him. Lol Plus, cupboards are a soft white and I thought the stark white of Granite would not compliment the warm white of the wood. It was just the right choice for me.
Iâm thinking of Granite for my bathrooms but will toothpaste, shampoos or hot curling irons mar it?

Love your kitchen! I am a Granite lover myself and redid our bathroom so it looks like a bathroom in a hotel we stayed at in London. The maintenance is definitely worth it. I never thought of adding the Granite to the kitchen but will do so now.

I also went round & round on my counter tops when I built my home & now when Iâm building again. I opted for quartz last time (& this time too) even the it costs more. I have found it to be SOOO durable & maintenance free (meaning no sealing several times a year). I was after as maintenance free of a home as I could get! However, in my new home Iâm going for cultured Granite (more cost effective) in the bathrooms & my maintenance free quartz in the kitchen. Not everyone would put two different kinds of counter tops in their house, but I am & Iâm OK with it & thatâs all that matters!! Thanks for this article, it gave me some things to think about before Iâm to the point of no return in my new house.
Hi! Iâm Deb.

I was watching the 1992 Olympics compulsory dance and there was a fluff about Isabelle Duchesnay and Christopher Dean since the Duchesnays were competing for Olympic gold (they ended up winning silver behind Klimova/Ponomarenko) in their home country of France, Chris was their choreographer, and Isabelle and Chris were married. Then I came across a video from a Torvill/Dean shipper called âI DO NOT LOVE YOU ISABELLEâ (see here if you want lmao) and the comments said Chris only marred Isabelle because he was in love with Jayne and heartbroken after Jayne got married and that Jayne was the only one who could handle Chris since she was so laid back. I was like what, but someone on twitter told me this is actually true and he admitted it in their Life Stories special and âhe admitted he felt empty because Jayne "wasnât his" so he rushed into it. Jayne also admitted she always loved him too, but they decided to put it behind them.â So I decided to look up old articles for the drama!
BTW for some background info Jayne married Phil Christensen in 1990 and theyâre still married to this day and have two adopted children.
Chris Dean and Isabelle Duchesnay were married from 1991 to 1993 and then divorced because Chris cheated on her with tons of other women (that didnât include Jayne). Isabelle also said Jayne hated her, was probably in love with Chris, and the only time she ever smiled at her was when she announced she was divorcing Chris:
âJayne hated me. I think perhaps she was in love with Chris before and never accepted me. The only time she ever smiled at me was when I announced I was divorcing him.â -Isabelle Duchesnay, whose marriage to Dean lasted less than three years (x)
Duchesnay had gone public with complaints that Dean cheated on her with a succession of women and that his on-ice intimacy with Torvill left her feeling excluded. Of Trenary, then dating the legally separated Dean, Duchesnay said, âI feel sorry for her.â (x)
Chris and Jill Trenary (American singles skater who was world champion in 1990) were married from 1994 to 2010 and have two kids. Jill said she didnât care that Chris cheated on Isabelle because she was madly in love, Jayneâs husband Phil was the best man at their wedding, and Chris said that he was sure that he will spend the rest of his life with Jill:
Dean denied Duchesnayâs accusations, and Trenary didnât care: she was, she said, âmadly in love.â Dean, divorced in December, formally proposed two months later in Norway, moments after he and Torvill won a bronze medal in their Olympic reunion. In a room below the ice rink, he knelt and popped the question. âIt was kinda cute,â said Trenary.
And so was she, at the wedding, in her white lace, off-the-shoulder gown. When she walked down the aisle with her father, Robert, a steel-mill owner, Torvill sat in a nearby pew. Her husband, Phil Christensen, a sound engineer, served as best man. And yes, there was iceâat the reception, chilling the champagne Dean raised in toast to his new wife. âThere are not many things in life you can be sure of,â he said. âOne thing Iâm sure about: this is the girl Iâm going to spend the rest of my life with. (x)
It didnât last for the rest of his life and Chris and Jill ended up separating in 2010 due to various reasons, one being that Chris no longer lived full time in Colorado and had to go back to the UK for 6 months when Dancing on Ice started. Chris and Jill were still on good terms though.Â
Chris started dating Karen Barber (she was an ice dancer whoâs partner was Nicky Slater the B.ESP uncle) who was also a Dancing on Ice judge in 2011. Theyâre still together in 2019. They started dating after Chris separated from Jill and Karen separated from her husband of 21 years, Stephen Pickavance:Â https://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-1347560/amp/Dancing-On-Ices-Karen-Barber-leaves-husband-caught-kissing-Christopher-Dean.html
At first Chris denied the relationship and said they were just sleepovers as friends since they knew each other since they were 16 and competing together. I also found out that Chris, Jayne, and Karen all hate B.ESP uncle Nicky Slater even though he was Karenâs partner:
âPeople think if youâre doing that Â[having Âsleepovers]: âWell, there must be more to it than that.â But there doesnât have to be. We [he, Karen and Jayne] have skated together since we were all 16. Iâve known her as long as Iâve known Jayne. When we competed in the British ÂChampionships, it was her and NickyâŠâ
Heâs referring to Nicky Slater, the judge who has just been dropped from Dancing On Ice and whose relationship with Karen is, wellâŠâletâs say frosty. âHe was an acquired taste,â says Chris. âPeople were divided. You like or you donât like his style.â Do you? âWeâve known him a long time,â he says diplomatically. SoââŠâback to this sleepover.
âThere can be friendships as well,â 52-year-old Chris insists. âKaren will stay with Jayne, too.â (x)
I also found some things about how Jayne and Chris described their relationship over the years. They didnât skate together between 1998 (when they stopped competing professionally) and 2006 (the first time they skated together again because of Dancing on Ice) and Chris was depressed when they first stopped skating together, but his relationship with Jayne âlasted longer than any of his marriagesâ:
He pauses, trying hard to find the right words to explain this thing with Jayne. âItâs unique,â he says. âWeâre not brother and sister. Weâre not husband and wife. But we formed our own friendship that required much more trust than any Ârelationship. Weâve been together longer than both my marriages lasted.â
In the early Nineties, Chris was married briefly to French-Canadian skater ÂIsabelle Duchesnay, who was famously jealous of Jayne, referring to her as the âother womanâ in their marriage. Patting Jayne on the leg, Chris says now: âThis is the one marriage that lasted.â
So, how did he cope with the eight-year separation following their retirement from professional skating in 1998?
Chris says: âIt was huge. We did our last performance together in Vancouver, but didnât tell anyone it was our last performance. Only we knew. I came back to England, packed up and went to the U.S. with my then wife, Jill, because we both thought there would be more opportunities for us there.
âSo, I left the country, our partnership had finished and dissolved. Iâd moved into a new house and I hadnât got a job. All of that was in the space of two weeks. I went through a big withdrawal.
âI had a lot of depression for six months. Itâs weird. I thought I was ready for it. Iâd psyched myself up and suddenly everything you knew, everything you were, was gone â changed. For six months, I was scratching my head wondering: âWhatâs life about?â Suddenly there was no routine. No time you had to get up in the morning.â
Jayne sits nodding as she listens to Chris. âI remember looking forward to it,â she says. âI didnât have to get up early. I didnât have to get up at a certain time. But the loss of routine was tough. We chatted on the phone pretty much every day. Then Dancing On Ice came up. For me, the first performance we did on the first series was frightening. (x)
Thereâs also this quote from 1995 about how they were upset they kept being asked about a documentary clip filmed between 1994 Euros and 1994 Olympics where Chris âgleefullyâ makes Jayne cry in practice, but at least people stopped asking if they were in love because of it:
Their aura of invincibility had therefore been shattered, and within a few weeks their much-written-about "love affair on ice" was also dented by a television documentary which gleefully showed Dean reducing his partner to tears during practice.
"At least it stopped people asking us if we have been in love for the past 10 years," Torvill said. "It was a bit mean of the director to do this. We had this nice image, and he clearly wanted to ruin it by making out we were at each other's throats every day."
The "nasty and ruthless" Dean cuts in. "Most of the aggressiveness shown in the film took place in between the Europeans and the Olympics, when the pressure was on, and our moods, because we had seen the writing on the wall, were not good. The truth is that we've been doing this for 20 years, and there's no way either Jayne or I could have stood it for so long if I'd always carried on like that. People still approach me and say that I was mean to Jayne, but it's normally tongue in cheek. At least it showed the reality of what we do to the public." (x)

Tipping Point Live Festival Reveals First Wave of Acts for 2020 Event
Following a highly successful launch event last summer, Tipping Point Live, the regionâs champion for new and emerging music is back for another year bringing with it 50 of the best bands and musical acts the region has to offer right now.
Rising like a proud phoenix from the ashes of its predecessor, Evolution Emerging, the new look multi-venue, fully inclusive and genre-defying festival will this year take place on Saturday 13th June.
The second annual showcase promises to be as diverse and genre-spanning as last yearâs offering, which in itself delighted hundreds of music revellers who travelled to the valley for a sun-fuelled day of electrifying new wave sounds.
As part of a wave of forthcoming announcements, organisers Generator have today confirmed 11 stellar acts that will perform at the 2020 gathering which includes The Dawdler â delivered by the songwriting Tyneside powerhouse that is John Edgar âSunderlandâs post-punk pioneers Roxy Girls, the Nick Drake inspired songstress IMOGEN, the Grime Hip Hop trendsetter ZICO MC and BBC Hot Listers, Squarms.
Also confirmed on the Tipping Point Live 2020 line-up is the BBC Introducing favourite, Courtney Dixon, fresh from her critically acclaimed debut single, âSummerâs Eyesâ, as well as ME LOST ME â a solo electronic music project of artist come musician Jayne Dent â Ceitidh Mac, Trunky Juno, Hartlepoolâs Straight Girl and the psychedelic and expansive world of Jango Flash.
Reacting to todayâs announcement â which also sees early bird tickets on sale for just ÂŁ10 â organiser Charlie Dancer, said: âTipping Point Live is all about recognising the breadth of musical talent that is being created across the North East of England and giving it a platform.
âWhether itâs beautiful soundscaping music from Cal Raasay on last years bill, a new wave John Cooper-Clarkâs over electro beats in the form of Squarms, or quirky post-punkisms from Moshi Moshi Records signed Roxy Girls â we want to champion innovators and forward-thinkers, and most of all, good music.
âLast year, while we tested out a new brand and format we were restrictive on the amount of acts we booked so that we could grow and move forward organically and in the right way that best serves music fans and the artists we host.
âThis year, weâre going to push those numbers closer to the 50 mark, starting earlier in the day to give more bands and artists opportunities to showcase their music and punters a longer day in the sun. Stay tuned for more updates and donât forget to take advantage of the Early Bird ticket offer. They wonât last long!â
Music and creative development agency Generator has a long history of supporting the development of North-East musical talent. From aiding the rise of Geordie star Sam Fender and the legendary Maximo Park to L Devine, Generator has a long-standing tradition of helping artists get on the right path to a sustainable career in the music industry, and Tipping Point Live is just one of the platforms the organisation offers musicians.
Tipping Point Live will be returning in 2020 on Saturday 13th June in Newcastleâs cultural quarter, the Ouseburn Valley.
An upgrade on the highly successful Evolution Emerging Festival, Tipping Point Live is a multi-venue showcase championing fresh, new music for every taste and music fans can expect a groundbreaking lineup of emerging musicians from right here in the North East of England.

Womenâs Euro 2021 Qualifiers: Wales 2-2 Northern Ireland â Ashley Hutton rescues point for NI
Womenâs Euro 2021 qualifier highlights: Wales 2-2 Northern Ireland
Ashley Huttonâs injury-time header gave Northern Ireland a draw to dent Walesâ Womenâs Euro 2021 qualifying hopes.
Simone Magillâs header put the visitors ahead as they impressed in the Group C match at Rodney Parade.
Wales levelled when Angharad Jamesâ shot deflected in off Emma Jones, before Kayleigh Greenâs firm header looked to have won it for Wales.
Marissa Callaghan struck the crossbar before a mistake by goalkeeper Laura OâSullivan allowed Hutton to head home.
Both sides came into this contest after opening their qualifying campaigns with scorelines of 6-0 in Group C, Wales thumping the Faroe Islands and Northern Ireland on the receiving end of a hammering by Norway.
However, you would never have known which side was heading into this match from a position of strength based on an even first half, where if anything the visitors were the better side.
The teams are separated by 27 places in the world rankings but Northern Ireland started impressively in Wales, pinning Jayne Ludlowâs side back and creating decent chances.
A mistake by the Wales defence allowed Lauren Wade a run at goal, but OâSullivan repelled her shot and smothered the ball at the second attempt.
Walesâ last qualifying campaign saw them keep seven clean sheets in eight matches, but they were breached after just 10 minutes as they failed to clear a set-piece allowing Magill to calmly head home from Sarah McFaddenâs knockdown.
The home side struggled to create chances in the first period but from their first serious effort they levelled, though luck played a key role as Jamesâ shot rebounded off the back of team-mate Jones to wrong-foot goalkeeper Emma Higgins.
Forward Kayleigh Green peels away after putting Wales ahead against Northern Ireland
The goal sparked Wales and captain Sophie Ingle headed wide as they finished the half on the front foot.
However, Northern Ireland again started brightly after the interval and an excellent team move started by left-back Demi Vance culminated in her blasting over.
That was a key moment as from Walesâ next big chance they took the lead, with centre-back Rhiannon Roberts popping up in attack and delivering a pinpoint cross that Green headed home at the far post.
Kenny Shielsâ side did not give up and were close to equalising when substitute Callaghan rattled the crossbar from 25 yards via a slight deflection, with Wales scrambling the rebound clear.
It looked like it would be enough to secure a vital win, but Wales suffered a stoppage-time calamity.
Goalscorer Green gave away a free-kick from which keeper OâSullivan dropped the ball under little pressure, with Hutton on hand to head home.

Kaye Ballard, star of âThe Mothers-In-Law,â dies at 93 Kaye Ballard, star of âThe Mothers-In-Law,â dies at 93 http://bit.ly/2TaU9rV
LOS ANGELES â Kaye Ballard, the boisterous comedian and singer who appeared in Broadway musicals and nightclubs from New York to Las Vegas and starred with Eve Arden in the 1960s TV sitcom âThe Mothers-In-Law,â has died. She was 93.
Ballard died Monday night at her home in Rancho Mirage, California, after a fight with kidney cancer, her friend Marguerite Gordon said Tuesday.
âThe Mothers-In-Law,â in which Ballard starred with Arden (of the 1950s sitcom âOur Miss Brooksâ), aired from 1967 to 1969. It marked a high point in a career that began when Ballard was 12 and lasted into the 21st century.

She was on hand last week when a documentary on her life and career premiered at the Palm Springs International Film Festival.

(Vivien Killilea/Getty Images for PSIFF)
âShe was so excited to be able to tell her story,â said Dan Wingate, the filmâs director. âShe was really anxious for young people, especially, who are going into the arts to understand the full breadth of a life in the arts, the ups and downs.â
The audienceâs response was gratifying for her, âto hear that applause and feel that love,â Wingate said, and she was thrilled when the documentary was singled out for festival honours.
âThe Mothers-In-Lawâ was set in a Los Angeles suburb and featured its stars as women who become thorns in their married childrenâs lives, with comedic results influenced by the screwball style of âI Love Lucy.â
Desi Arnaz, who starred with wife Lucille Ball in that classic sitcom, produced and directed 24 episodes of the Ballard-Arden show. The âI Love Lucyâ team of Bob Carroll Jr. and Madelyn Pugh Davis were the showâs creators and lead writers.
Ballard made a mark in every form of show business except movies. She did appear as a secondary player in a few films, including 1958âs âThe Girl Most Likelyâ starring Jane Powell and in 1964âs âA House Is Not a Home,â but her high-octane personality may have been too potent for the big screen of that era and its more restrictive portrayals of women.
Movie stardom was her first dream, as it was for others of her generation, filmmaker Wingate said, and he wanted the documentary to be seen on the big screen to help fulfil that goal.
But even falling short of a big film career, âshe was able to reach and endear herself to so many people,â he said.
Rest In Peace Kaye. Thank you for all the kind words of encouragement you gave to me. I adore, admire and love you. You were one of a kind. #KayeBallard pic.twitter.com/PtYIDZvKrQ

Ballardâs first real break came when she was singing in a Detroit nightclub, The Bowery. Comedy bandleader Spike Jones dropped in one night and quickly drafted the exuberant young singer into his musical contingent. For two years she toured with Jonesâ troupe, singing, playing the flute and tuba and engaging in the bandâs antics. She also sang with the bands of Vaughn Monroe and Stan Kenton.
In 1945 she moved to New York and sought work in theatre, appearing on Broadway in a small part in the revue âThree to Make Ready.â She toured in summer stock and finally made a dent in New York as a madcap Helen of Troy in 1954âs âThe Golden Apple,â drawing applause with her song âLazy Afternoon.â One critic called her performance âa wonder of insinuation.â
She also won critical praise for her role as âThe Incomparable Rosalie,â the magicianâs assistant and mistress in 1961âs âCarnival!,â a musicalized version of the movie âLili.â She sang âAlways, Always Youâ while stretched out in a box the jealous magician was piercing with swords.
Ballard began working on TV in the early 1950s, becoming an in-demand performer on network variety programs including âThe Mel Torme Showâ and those of Ed Sullivan and Perry Como. She also became a favourite of talk show hosts, making repeat appearances with Jack Paar, Merv Griffin and Johnny Carson.
She was a regular on âThe Doris Day Showâ in the 1970s and the 1990s TV series âDue South.â
Her nightclub act played in first-class venues including the Blue Angel in New York, Mr. Kellyâs in Chicago, the Flamingo in Las Vegas and the hungry i in San Francisco.
Iâm so sad to hear of the passing of wonderful Kaye Ballard â one of the truly great entertainers. She could do everythingâŠwhat a voice, what a talent & wow, she could make me laugh. I love this pic of us in â66 with dear Liza & Jayne. Thank you Kaye. #KayeBallard pic.twitter.com/sbUE7PCdWb
â Mitzi Gaynor (@TheMitziGaynor) January 22, 2019
She was born Catherine Gloria Ballota to Italian immigrant parents in Cleveland, Ohio, on Nov. 20, 1925, according to her 2006 memoir âHow I Lost 10 Pounds in 53 Years.â (She noted she had always said she was born in 1926.)
She changed her name to Kaye Ballard when she entered show business. On the advice of a numerologist she switched to Kay in midcareer.
âHe said my luck would change if I dropped the âeâ,â she told a reporter in 1983. âIt did. It went steadily downward.â
She eventually returned to being Kaye.
Determined to become an actress, she would not be discouraged by a high school teacher who rejected her for a drama class, concluding she âwasnât pretty enough,â nor her parents, who didnât understand the business.
She sang at service clubs and appeared at a âStage Door Canteenâ in Cleveland. After graduating from high school she worked at a burlesque theatre, not as a stripper but as straight woman in comedy sketches. She went on the road with her act of songs, comedy and impressions of famous stars and in Detroit made the fortuitous connection with Jones.
In the early 2000s, Ballard toured with other stars in a musical comedy âNunsenseâ and joined the touring company of the Broadway hit âThe Full Montyâ as piano player for six men who stripped to make money with a musical show.
Ballard was engaged four times but never married.
âI didnât want to,â she told The Associated Press in 1999. âI could have, many times. But I just wanted a career too much. I was smart enough to know, if you get married and have children, thatâs it. Being Italian and raised as a Catholic, I took children seriously. Maybe I made a mistake. Who knows?â
She purchased her Southern California desert home from Arnaz in the early 1940s.
âItâs a stoneâs throw from Gerald Ford,â she said of her presidential neighbour in a 1981 interview. âWhen he moved in, he upped my property value. It made me think of becoming a Republican.â
A non-starter was ever leaving show business, even as the years passed.
âIâm not going to retire. I donât believe in retiring,â she told the AP in 2001. âI do take more time off now to enjoy life and my three dogs and house. But if something wonderful comes up, Iâm ready.â

Dinastia Blackfyre
Harrys I Blackfyre.
