According to the map, about halfway through the woods, the road will split, each side narrowing to a single lane. The light is minimal, but they make it to the fork without incident.

What the map didn’t show – what they only realize once it’s too late to turn back, is that the next stretch of road is in serious need of repair. Not only do the bumps and potholes slow their progress, but the path twists and turns, making it seem like they are going miles out of the way.

“Didn’t anyone teach the engineers that the shortest distance between two places is a straight line?” Lydia mutters.

“They must’ve skipped school that day,” Noah jokes.

But she can tell he’s getting more frustrated by the minute.

Alli certainly wasn’t exaggerating when she described Trona Woods. A place that is somehow both cramped and desolate. Strangely still, yet teeming with activity. The farther they travel, the larger and more gnarled the trees become. And the fog… It’s like a living breathing thing, swelling and receding in unpredictable cycles, droplets of moisture reflecting the hue of the leaves and moss, giving everything an eerie green glow.

They are two-thirds of the way through when night falls, plunging them into darkness. Beneath the intricate web of branches and foliage, they can’t even rely on the guidance of either of Oz’s moons. Noah flicks on the high beams, but the road is so laden with dirt, debris, and overgrowth, one can hardly see the yellow bricks.

It’s not just the limited visibility that feels menacing. There’s something else. A presence.

Lydia shuts her eyes and takes deep, deliberate breaths.

That’s when she hears it.

The howl of a wolf.

They’re children living for the future through a lens of past. Fireside stories embraced by woodland caves. They chant, dance, and recite from a sacred book - the heirloom they claim from a father they chose.

The window is finally open, but time froze at Welton lake. Forever winter. Forever youth. A moment in time, a feeling, a community turned to dust.

It's all so fleeting. Carpe Diem. Teenage years, childhood, a lifetime in three months. It’s a tragedy of classical epics.

The tale is old, but this wound is fresh. Falling to your knees. Shouting at the sky, praying and wailing, and clutching at the earth.

But the snow never stops.

Spring is up to us.

We never find out how Jonathan got past the wolves.

Which means there's nothing in the text stopping me from imagining that he befriended them because they aren't vicious without the Count's influence. Just Jonathan and a pack of good boys who decided not to eat him.

(I don't know if they'd classify as werewolves, because they don't transform into humans or vice versa, but they are wolf men things so...) Werewolves only ever pick flowers when they are gifting them to a potential mate or someone they wish to court. That's how Sun could tell so easily what Moon was doing.
