ULTRAMagic Interval Chapter 21

Master Post - Patreon
Aelia’s familiar returned rather quickly and what it told her was not good. She stood up with a serious look on her face. “We need to find Orion right now.”
“Dang it, I knew something was off…” Will noted as he got up. “We should have gone with him.”
“Faustus, go warn Milan,” Aelia instructed. “I’ll inform the headmaster while…” As she said that, Orion ran by, heading straight towards the stage.
“Well that solves that issue…” Faustus remarked.
Several students were concerned and Milan had overheard this commotion. He quickly noticed Orion and went right to him. “Orion, what’s the matter?” he asked as he got down and put his hand on the boy’s shoulder.
“Beth… be-beth…” he was trying to catch his breath.
“Bethany?” Orion nodded. Milan could definitely sense something coming. “Will, Faustus, come down here for a moment…” he called out as he stood up.
Things went deathly silent, with the tension mounting. Right before Will and Faustus started to move, screaming could be faintly heard through the closed doors to the hallways. The staff present began to panic as they knew something was wrong. Before anyone could properly react, something burst through the doors with a mighty roar, shattering them to pieces. Milan could see it was Bethany in her manticore form once the dust had settled enough.
“I’ll be taking that boy, if you don’t mind…” she stated, flicking some debris off of her tail.
Orion hid behind Milan as the archmage readied a burning, red orb in his hand. “The Vermilion Manticore, aye? Well ain’t that surprise, no doubt Valentin…”
“NOT IN MY ACADEMY, INSUFFERABLE BEAST!” An older voice roared, cutting Milan off.
The declaration came from a mage with graying brown hair, dressed in robes that suggested a great deal of authority at the academy. He levitated Bethany up, grabbed something invisible, and sent her flying out of the hall. She tumbled through the academy until coming to a stop outside. The mage then stomped his foot, causing the entire room to shake.
Outside, Bethany got up and collected her bearings. “Ow, probably should’ve seen that coming…” What caught her off guard was two statues that leapt down from the front wall, landing with a massive thud. They were both stone knights standing at seven feet tall, wielding large maces and shields. “Oh great, a welcoming committee…”
Back in the lecture hall, the mage composed himself. “How in Merlin’s beard did she even get into this realm!?”
“Valentin’s doing, I’d imagine,” Milan figured. “Although I never thought him to be one for petty revenge.” He then turned to Orion. “Are you okay?”
He nodded. “Yeah. A little scared, but alright.”
“Oh, Orion, this here is Headmaster Vulcan…”
“Stay by my side, lad. I won’t let that beast touch a single hair on you.”
“Yes sir, thank you,” Orion replied.
Aelia came rushing over with Will and Sam. Faustus had already merged with his partner. “Milan, head back to M.A.I.G. and make sure we haven’t been breached!” Aelia instructed.
“Right! Good call. I’ll send Zoltan over immediately and… argh, should we send Orion back too?”
“No,” said Vulcan. “If this was a coordinated effort. M.A.I.G. should be considered compromised until the threat has been dealt with or we can confirm otherwise.”
“I doubt that, but fair enough,” Milan said as he made his way to the wrecked doorway. “I’m off, be back in a flash!”
Vulcan turned to the staff present. “Don’t just stand there, go help the students and make sure everyone is alright!” They quickly got moving.
“I’m sorry for bringing my nonsense here, headmaster,” said Will.
“Don’t apologize, William. This isn’t your fault…”
“Pretty sure it’s my fault given yesterday,” Orion interjected, causing Vulcan to laugh.
Aelia cleared her throat. “We can discuss this later. William, Samantha, follow me.” As they made their way through the hectic hallways, staff were doing their best to keep everyone calm and get people to safety.
“Here’s hoping Zoltan gets here soon” Will said as they exited through the front entrance.
Aelia chuckled. “I’m surprised you haven’t taken a jab at Zoltan, William…”
“Well, I mean, now's not the time for that.”
Sam giggled. “Progress, Boyo.”
“Hey, he’s a good man. It’s just those mouth breathers on the internet who think he’s bad…”
Bethany was getting tossed about and battered by the statues. She was barely holding her own as it was difficult to sting stone statues and a handful of professors and security were pelting her with spells. The manticore’s hide could fend it all off, but only for so long before she reverted back. She then noticed Aelia, Will, and Sam as she flung one of the knights aside with her tail. Milan was nowhere to be found, concerning her. Her focus was thrown off when a particularly strong fireball from Will hit her.
“Hey, Whiskers!”
Bethany leapt forward with a roar. “WHAT DID YOU JUST CALL ME?”
Will recoiled a little as Bethany stood before him, teeth bared and her warm breath hitting his face. He readied another fireball. “Don’t you dare lay another finger on my son.”
She growled. “You’re lucky you’re not my target today…”
Will was silently panicking as Bethany looked more like a lion this time around. Was this a new power or just how she always was? Regardless, he clenched his fist. “I said leave my son alone!” Will then punched her right in the snout with a flaming fist, causing Bethany to recoil and fall over with a pained roar.
Sam quickly pulled Will back a bit on Aelia’s signal, as Bethany had begun thrashing around widely. Aelia then snapped her fingers, causing giant, thorny vines to emerge from the ground. They began striking Bethany, albeit not as hard as they could. Ideally she wanted to stall until Zoltan got there as she had a hunch Bethany would run again. After repeated assaults from the vines, stone knights, and mages, Bethany reverted back with the attacks stopping. It then occurred to her… her opponents were holding back for some reason.
“Hey! What are you all playing at!?” Bethany demanded to know, sniffling as her burnt nose bled. She then got her answer as the exact individual she feared came running up.
“Hope I’m not late, everyone!” Zoltan announced.
“Fashionably late as usual, Mr. Dracul,” Aelia replied.
As Zoltan laughed in stride, Bethany pulled out one of Valentin’s cards. “GET ME OUT OF HERE!” She screamed at it as she vanished in a flurry of sparks. This took the majority of everyone present off guard.
Zoltan sighed and shook his head. “Again? Will, I’m not that scary, am I?”
“You’re definitely intimidating, I will say…”
Sam thought about it for a second. “Well she is a kid after all…”
“Very true,” Zoltan agreed as he scratched his stubble.
“Is M.A.I.G. safe, Zoltan?” Aelia inquired.
“Indeed. I was a bit stunned when Milan told us what was going on. Now let’s all head back. M.A.I.G. personnel are on the way and Vulcan has everything else taken care of.”
Making their way back to headquarters, the group went straight to the usual conference room for an emergency meeting. Antares, Trumna, Milan, and Reynard were present as Zoltan and the others arrived. The lights of the alarms along the walls were flashing yellow, indicating that the base was on watch. Despite all of this, Orion felt fairly safe, sitting down in his comfy conference chair.
“Oh boy, do we have a SNAFU on our hands…” Trumna declared.
“Not a good first outing as a parent, Private,” Antares chided.
Will groaned. “Hey, I thought it was safe! Despite the feeling I had…”
“Private, when you get a feeling like that, you stay together and call for backup!” Antares snapped. “This is basic training…”
“Captain,” Aelia interrupted. “To be fair to William, it is partially my fault. It was arrogant of me to assume that the academy was impenetrable to Valentin’s machinations.”
“He is a crafty one, Antares,” Milan added.
Just as Antares was about to respond, Jackson walked in. “Sorry I’m late. The base seems to be secure.” He then went over to Orion. “How are you doing, Kiddo?”
“A little shaken, but alright…”
“Tell you what, I’ll sit next to you just in case,” he replied as he sat down and handed  Orion some candy. “Here, have a sucker.”
“Thank you, Jack.”
Jackson then cleared his throat a little. “Weatherman…”
“I know…” Will said with a sigh.
“No need, Jack,” Reynard interjected. “Antares already talked to him.”
There was a slight awkward silence. “So now what?” Faustus asked.
“Well I’d say we need to get Orion to a secure location,” Zoltan replied. “He is a civilian that isn’t authorized to be here after all.”
“Agreed,” Trumna replied. “How quickly could we get him to Camelot, Antares?”
He thought about it for a moment, contemplating the logistics of such a plan. “The closest transports are a couple days out. Furthermore, Camelot has been running into trouble as of late. I firmly believe Despot knows we’re on the way, creating distractions all over the place. Truthfully I’m not sure it’s the safest place right now…”
“Well we have to pick somewhere, gentlemen,” Reynard put in. “I’d say GRENADIER’s HQ, but they are pretty far away…”
“Hey, what about my house?” Sam inquired. “It’s all the way in New York, so he should be safe there.”
Trumna shook his head. “I don’t know, that’s a bit of a gamble.”
“Valentin may be trying to get Orion out of the picture, now that I think about it,” Milan deduced. “But I do trust Randalph Scarfe to keep him safe.”
“Dear, wouldn’t we be playing right into Valentin’s hand though?” Aelia pointed out.
“Yes, but if it keeps Orion safe and gets Valentin to calm down, we should go for it…”
“Wait a second!” Jackson interrupted. “Orion, couldn’t you just scare Valentin again?”
“Yeah, but that doesn’t mean I’m invincible,” Orion answered. “I’m still a kid, you know?”
Will chuckled. “Well, Antonio would definitely make sure he’s safe. You should’ve seen it last year when a couple of anarchist thugs tried to rob us.”
Antares gave a slightly exasperated sigh. “Ah yes, that… we had to cover it up because Antonio used his demon form to beat them within an inch of their life.”
Reynard laughed sympathetically. “Seems like it was a real party. You know? He sounds like the Antonio Pari I met back in the 20s.”
Trumna thought over the idea of Sam’s house in his head. While it was still risky, it was becoming more and more appealing. “Will, can you get a hold of Antonio and Kyu?”
Will looked at the clock. “1 o’clock? Yeah, probably.”
All the way back at Sam’s house, Kyu was typing on his supercomputer. He was processing the data Bran had been sending him while he waited for Randalph to prepare that day’s magic lesson. Taking a sip of his tea, he looked at a framed photo of him, Will, and Sam. He then glanced out the window, watching the trees sway in the wind. Some of the leaves were starting to turn color. His computer beeped and hummed away as it went about its processes.
Despite getting used to the anxiety, it was still eating at him. Kyu really wished they could just come home already. It was nerve wracking to wait for updates on the Red River situation as he had no idea what they would say. It also did not help that he was feeling guilty over not having proper magic skills up until the incident. Kyu was deep in thought over these matters until a notification on his desktop startled him, causing him to nearly spill his tea. Upon reading the message, he rushed down stairs.
“GUYS!” Kyu exclaimed as Randalph was setting up some magic tools and Antonio was watching the television. “Priority message from M.A.I.G.!”
“Oh? what is it?” Randalph inquired.
“Doesn’t matter, let’s get up there” Antonio said as he got up. “Are there others okay?”
“Sounds like it, but Trumna wants to talk to us regardless” Kyu answered.
The three headed up stairs to Kyu’s room, which was a mess of cables, machines, and storage disks. As Antonio and Randalph carefully maneuvered around the clutter, Kyu started the video call. After a moment of the computer setting up a secure connection, a view of a conference room with multiple people in it popped up on the screen. Front and center was Will and Sam, happy to see Kyu and the others again.
“Hey guys!” said Will. “What’s up?”
“Will, Sam!” Antonio exclaimed. “Ain’t you two a sight for sore eyes?”
Kyu chuckled. “Thank you, Antonio. Will, Sam, I’m glad to see you two are alright.”
“Hello, everyone,” Randalph added.
After the greetings were out of the way, Kyu got straight to the point. “Alright, Will, Trumna, what’s the matter?”
“Where do I even begin?” Trumna wondered. “We need you three to look after someone. To put it bluntly, Will and Sam adopted an adolescent astral entity who ruined one of Valentin’s plans. The boy now needs protection as Valentin tried to send Bethany after him.”
The three were speechless. “Well that wasn’t on my bingo card…” Antonio remarked.
“I’m sorry, Trumna, but did you say an astral entity?” Randalph questioned.
“Will, Sam…” Kyu started to say. “Just what in the blue blazes is going on over there?!”
“A lot,” Will replied. “Also Buster is apparently from the Unlight…”
“Yeah, Bran told me about that one.” Kyu scratched under his left feeler and sighed. “Where is he?”
Orion walked over. “Hi, I’m Orion!”
“Nice to meet you, kid,” Antonio replied. “Jeez, Will, I expected you and Sam to get hitched before you brought home a kid. I haven’t even made the arrangements yet. I knew it was only a matter of time, but wow…” The couple were blushing a little.
“Do you guys think you can keep him safe?” Sam asked. “I know it’s a little sudden, but he’s in legitimate danger here.”
“Of course we can,” Antonio agreed. “Kyu?”
“Absolutely, as long as you don’t mind how strange we are, Orion.”
“It’s all good,” he answered as he finished his sucker.
“An astral entity, here on Earth!?” Randalph’s confusion made the other two laugh.
“When can you guys receive him, Antonio?” Trumna inquired.
“Umm… tomorrow would be ideal so I can get things ready. I can work on the paperwork while he’s here.”
“Alright then. We’ll arrange some transport and…”
“That’s alright, Mr. Trumna,” Orion put in. “I can walk.”
“You can? How?”
“Show me where mom’s house is and I should be able to walk around this realm to get there.”
Trumna was baffled. “Milan? Thoughts?”
He shrugged. “It’s elementary if you know where you’re going.”
“Very well. Any further questions, Kyu? Antonio?”
They looked at each other for a moment. “Er, sure Trumna,” Kyu answered. “I definitely have a couple…”

Sooo I ended up coming up with 3 kids of Henry’s…
(This gonna get long)
Bethany “Beth” Stein- the oldest child. She got sick a few years before Joey threw Henry into the cycle and ended up passing away from it at 19 soon after Henry got thrown in.
Joey felt guilty about this and thought the best solution was to just. Make a new Beth for Linda. Linda had a weak heart and was already not doing well with everything, and Joey showing her a child version of the daughter she just lost freaked her out so bad that she had a heart attack and couldn’t be saved in time.
After this, Joey couldn’t stand his version of beth calling him “uncle Joey” but got attached to the idea of raising her, but she ended up being unstable and melted away. So Joey decided to try again, but instead of just trying to recreate beth, he’d use her likeness to make his own daughter, Audrey Drew
William “Billy” Stein- the middle child. At 15, he lost his dad, sister and mom within a very short frame of time and only had his little sister left.
Him and his sister got taken in by Joey. Joey still wanted his own kid and figured billy and his sis would be ready to move out within a couple years anyway so he continued trying to make his own kid in secret.
Billy got suspicious and bitter towards Joey and ended up discovering joeys little project, alongside a journal detailing some of the atrocities Joey committed.
Unfortunately, Billy got caught before he could expose Joey and Joey infected him with the ink in order to not get caught. Billy managed to get away for a little bit as he was transforming into an ink monster and gave the journal to his little sister and told her to run, keeping Joey away from her long enough for her to escape.
Joey threw billy into the cycle and Billy transformed into a Boris with glowing golden eyes, often deemed “Borkis” by the rare few who see him
Mary Stein- the youngest Stein and the only one who managed to get away. She was 9 years old when all this happened and it destroyed her life.
She wasn’t able to get anyone to believe her, even with the journal. But fortunately she got put into an orphanage rather than back with Joey as Joey was under investigation.
She got to keep the journal and read through, growing more bitter and vengeful towards Joey as she read through his atrocities.
She also developed anger towards a certain monster Joey kept bringing up in his journal.
A version of Bendy.
Her favorite of her dads creation.
Twisted and mangled into a heartless beast.
It’s usually friendly grin now seeming sickening.
Joey was the true culprit behind everything, but it was clear from his writings this monster he created also caused so much pain.
So.
She vowed.
To do everything she could to not only get revenge on Joey,
But destroy his crooked empire,
And put down his horrific copies of her fathers creations.
No matter what it took.
At some point in her adulthood, she found herself working for Gent as a commander to Alan greys secret militia.
She’s not happy with greys experiments, but tolerated it in order to have access to his resources to complete her goals.
She only has one rule for him.
No kids.
Other than that, she’d let him experiment on whoever he wanted without argument.
In turn, Alan gave her access to the ink. She ended up using very small, controlled doses of it to keep herself young and strong until she could complete her personal mission (so she ends up looking 20 when she’s in her 40s by batai)
But once she discovers the ink demon resides within the body of a teenage Bendy, she’s conflicted.
On the one hand, this Bendy is just another monstrous copy of something her dad created,
On the other…
He was almost the same age as her brother when she lost him…
The ink demon was still just a monster to her,
But this was just a kid.
So she develops a new plan.
Separate Bendy and The Ink Demon first
Then take the ink demon out,
once and for all

Review: Revenge of the Beast by Jack Meggitt-Phillips and Isabelle Follath
Tumblr media
Last year, I was lucky enough to take part in the blog tour for the first instalment in this witty, madcap middle-grade series. This year, I’m lucky enough to take part in another blog tour with The WriteReads and Farshore for the follow-up to The Beast and the Bethany -Revenge of the Beast.
The beast has ruled 500-something Ebenezer Tweezer’s life for centuries and now it has finally gone. He and reformed prankster Bethany are now determined to become do-gooders and transform the neighbourhood’s opinions of them. But this proves harder than both of them thought and Ebenezer finds that he’s strangely missing the beast. Claudette the parrot is also feeling and behaving a bit strangely, so what’s really going on?
Tumblr media
The book is accompanied by Isabelle Follath’s quirky, charismatic illustrations. As well as the full page images, we are treated to double page spreads and decorative borders throughout the book. They add an extra engaging dimension, which I adored.
Tumblr media
Meggitt-Phillips’ humour is ridiculously silly and ideal for imaginative children’s writing. It manages to be slapstick with enough cheek and sass for it to appeal to older readers too. At their heart, these books are intrinsically dark but the comedy prevents them from being nightmare fodder.
Tumblr media
I don’t think I’ve ever read a building described as ‘an architectural equivalent of someone who freely picks their nose in public’ but it works wonderfully well for the orphanage. I am still in awe of the unique descriptions that Meggitt-Phillips puts to paper and I know that kids will laugh themselves silly over them.
Tumblr media
I think Gloria was one of my favourite additions to the sequel. She is an incredibly precocious, aspiring starlet, who has been left at the orphanage by her parents who aren’t dead -they have simply had enough of her! It might seem harsh to some readers but I found the whole idea incredibly funny!
Revenge of the Beast is a very funny, deliciously dark second book in the Beast and the Bethany series. Full of Dahl and Snicket-esque humour and stacks of imagination, I’m already looking forward to the third book!

And because I also love organization, here are all the fairy tale books I have read and reviewed, grouped by fairy tale and listed alphabetically. New Releases
We’ve got three new books on our radar for books launching tomorrow on 10/1. Happy early book birthday to…
Shadow Frost by Coco Ma IN THE KINGDOM OF AXARIA, a darkness rises. Some call it a monster, laying waste to the villagers and their homes. Some say it is an invulnerable demon summoned from the deepest abysses of the Immortal Realm. Many soldiers from the royal guard are sent out to hunt it down. Not one has ever returned.
When Asterin Faelenhart, Princess of Axaria and heir to the throne, discovers that she may hold the key to defeating the mysterious demon terrorizing her kingdom, she vows not to rest until the beast is slain. With the help of her friends and the powers she wields — though has yet to fully understand — Asterin sets out to complete a single task. The task that countless, trained soldiers have failed.
To kill it. But as they hunt for the demon, they unearth a plot to assassinate the Princess herself instead. Asterin and her companions begin to wonder how much of their lives have been lies, especially when they realize that the center of the web of deceit might very well be themselves. With no one else to turn to, they are forced to decide just how much they are willing to sacrifice to protect the only world they have ever known.
That is, of course… if the demon doesn’t get to them first. From young author Coco Ma comes a dazzling new tale of adventure, power, and betrayal, weaving together a stunning world of magic with a killer cast in an explosive, unforgettable debut. — Cover image and summary via Goodreads

You might be the kind of person who stands up to online trolls. Or who marches to protest injustice. Perhaps you are #DisabledAndCute and dancing around your living room, alive and proud. Or perhaps you are the trans mentor that you wish you had when you were younger. Maybe you call out false allies, or stand up to loved ones. Maybe you speak your truth and drop the mic, or maybe you take it with you when you leave.
This anthology features fictional stories–in poems, prose, and art–that reflect a slice of the varied and limitless ways that readers like you resist every day. TAKE THE MIC’s powerful collection of stories features work by literary luminaries and emerging talent alike, including Newbery-winner Jason Reynolds, New York Times bestseller Samira Ahmed, anthologist and contributor Bethany C. Morrow, Darcie Little Badger, Keah Brown, Laura Silverman, L.D. Lewis, Sofia Quintero, Ray Stoeve, Yamile Mendez, and Connie Sun, with cover and interior art by Richie Pope. — Cover image and summary via Goodreads
The Good Luck Girls (The Good Luck Girls #1) by Charlotte Nicole Davis Westworld meets The Handmaid’s Tale in this stunning fantasy adventure from debut author Charlotte Nicole Davis.
Aster, the protector Violet, the favorite Tansy, the medic Mallow, the fighter Clementine, the catalyst
THE GOOD LUCK GIRLS The country of Arketta calls them Good Luck Girls–they know their luck is anything but. Sold to a “welcome house” as children and branded with cursed markings. Trapped in a life they would never have chosen.
When Clementine accidentally murders a man, the girls risk a dangerous escape and harrowing journey to find freedom, justice, and revenge in a country that wants them to have none of those things. Pursued by Arketta’s most vicious and powerful forces, both human and inhuman, their only hope lies in a bedtime story passed from one Good Luck Girl to another, a story that only the youngest or most desperate would ever believe. It’s going to take more than luck for them all to survive. — Cover image and summary via Goodreads

For the week of 28 October 2019
Quick Bits:
Afterlift #1 is a digital original from Chip Zdarsky, Jason Loo, Paris Alleyne, and Aditya Bidikar. Very interesting concept here playing with a character who drives for a Lyft analogue in Cabit, leading to becoming a rather unique courier.
| Published by Jams & Jellies
Tumblr media
Batman Annual #4 actually gives us many adventures and stories as we go through almost two months’ of diary entries of Batman’s exploits from Alfred, as told by Tom King, Jorge Fornés, Mike Norton, Dave Stewart, and Clayton Cowles. It’s a nice way to pack a lot of story into this annual in a fairly unique way, while also showcasing just how busy Batman really is.
| Published by DC Comics
Tumblr media
Black Panther #17 sets up for the next confrontation with N’Jadaka and his forces, also giving us a rather...awkward but interesting conversation between Storm and Nakia. Gorgeous art from Daniel Acuña.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Bloodshot #2 continues the balls to the wall action as Bloodshot and the Black Bar conflict escalates, from Tim Seeley, Brett Booth, Adelso Corona, Andrew Dalhouse, and Dave Sharpe. It’s a bit of a throwback to a more action-oriented style, but it definitely works for Bloodshot. A nice change of pace to give a variety of storytelling.
| Published by Valiant
Tumblr media
Conan the Barbarian #10 spins us the twins’ yarn as they plotted their revenge on Conan, from Jason Aaron, Mahmud Asrar, Matthew Wilson, and Travis Lanham. The art from Asrar and Wilson is gorgeous. The backstory building up to last parts of this story and the fate of Conan is gripping.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Contagion #5 brings an end to this series from Ed Brisson, Adam Gorham, Veronica Gandini, and Cory Petit. Gorgeous and creepy art here from Gorham and Gandini.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
DCeased #6 is surprisingly hopefully, even as everything dies and everybody hurts. It appears to be setting up a sequel, though likely to be incredibly bleak. Tom Taylor, Trevor Hairsine, Neil Edwards, Stefano Gaudiano, Rain Beredo, and Saida Temofonte conclude this series in epic fashion as we say goodbye to Earth.
| Published by DC Comics
Tumblr media
Death’s Head #4 is another ending to a series this week, from Tini Howard, Kei Zama, Felipe Sobreiro, and Travis Lanham. Some very nice character work here for Death’s Head and Vee.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Doctor Strange Annual #1 gives us a pair of tales. The lead from Tini Howard, Andy MacDonald, TrĂona Farrell, and Cory Petit is a fun Halloween story dealing with the spirits haunting the Sanctum Sanctorum. Any art from MacDonald is a treat. The back up is a bit more deadly serious with Pornsak Pichetshote, Lalit Kumar Sharma, Sean Parsons, JosĂŠ Villarrubia, and Petit revealing a failsafe should Strange go rogue.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Ether: The Disappearance of Violet Bell #2 continues to be incredibly inventive as Boone tries to track down the assassin. David Rubín’s art is absolutely amazing. And Boone’s continued inability to really think about anyone other than himself is telling.
| Published by Dark Horse
Tumblr media
Excalibur #1 is another tick in the win column for “Dawn of X”. The X-Men dabbling in magic isn’t common, but Tini Howard, Marcus To, Erick Arciniega, and Cory Petit do so with amazing flair, fittingly taking us in through Otherworld, Captain Britain, and Betsy Braddock. Apocalypse’s new incarnation as  “ •|A| •” and his newfound interest in magic is fascinating.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Five Years #5 spotlights Zoe’s rather elaborate imagination for coming up with ways to murder people. Granted, the Russian agent may well deserve it, but still... Terry Moore continues to deliver some unexpected twists as the end of the world inches closer.
| Published by Abstract Studio
Tumblr media
Giant Days: As Time Goes By #1 is a one-shot finale special from John Allison, Max Sarin, Whitney Cogar, and Jim Campbell. It picks up roughly a year from the end of the series, dealing with why Esther has been missing from their reunions. It’s full of all of the humour that we’ve been used to and hammers home the power of friendship. Also, it gets very, very weird.
| Published by Boom Entertainment / BOOM! Box
Tumblr media
Harleen #2 works hard to portray Harley’s seduction by the Joker. Stjepan Šejić and Gabriela Downie portray it as an insidious, manipulative thing. It might appear romantic on the surface, but there’s definitely a darkness there. There are ideas of bringing back a monster from the edge of insanity, but the story makes you realize that some may well be beyond hope.
| Published by DC Comics - Black Label
Tumblr media
Hellboy and the BPRD: Long Night at Goloski Station might well be the best of these new format tales yet, and both of the previous ones were incredibly strong. Here Mike Mignola, Matt Smith, Dave Stewart, and Clem Robins deliver a single issue story building on Hellboy’s confrontation with Baba Yaga, Sir Edward Grey, and demons.
| Published by Dark Horse
Tumblr media
Invisible Kingdom #6 begins the second arc, “Edge of Everything”, as the crew first try to find food and fuel and then run afoul of a salvage ship. G. Willow Wilson, Christian Ward, and Sal Cipriano keep things interesting as we start to see the crew’s life after Lux.
| Published by Dark Horse / Berger Books
Tumblr media
Invisible Woman #4 is disturbing, basically everything goes to hell and everyone that Sue was trusting to see this operation through has let her down. Or worse. Mark Waid, Mattia De Iulis, and Joe Caramagna set up a rather horrifying situation in this penultimate chapter. Again, De Iulis’ artwork is stunning.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Joker: Killer Smile #1 is essentially a psychological horror from Jeff Lemire, Andrea Sorrentino, Jordie Bellaire, and Steve Wands. It comes from the point of view of a psychiatrist, Dr. Ben Arnell, who is trying to get to the heart of Joker’s mental state. It’s not going so well and it appears like the good doctor is losing time, doing strange things, and possibly worse. Very intriguing beginning to this story.
| Published by DC Comics - Black Label
Tumblr media
Knights Temporal #4 has some stunning artwork from Fran GalĂĄn, particularly during the gangster sequences where colour comes into play as another important storytelling element. There are some very nice twists this issue, making you wonder about a lot of what we thought we knew.
| Published by AfterShock
Tumblr media
The Last God #1 is dark fantasy done right by Phillip Kennedy Johnson, Riccardo Federici, Sunny Gho, Dean White, Tom Napolitano, Steve Wands, and Jared Blando. It gives us lying kings, heroes who weren’t rightly heroes, and a Lovecraftian terror returned to show the truth. It plays deep on resentment and distrust, and of a complete failure of institutions to uphold a decent society. All with absolutely stunning artwork from Federici, Gho, and White. This is a beautiful, haunting work.
| Published by DC Comics - Black Label
Tumblr media
Last Stop on the Red Line #4 is very, very weird. We get a peek behind the masks of the monsters and it’s even stranger. There’s a very interesting mix of symbolism and the supernatural where we’re really not sure where one begins and the other ends. This was a very unique series from Paul Maybury, Sam Lotfi, and Adam Pruett.
| Published by Dark Horse
Tumblr media
Mall #3 goes even harder into inter-faction warfare as it seems like all of the groups are at one another’s throats. Great world-building here from Michael Moreci, Gary Dauberman, Zak Hartong, Addison Duke, and Jim Campbell, with some interesting plot developments.
| Published by Vault
Tumblr media
Manor Black #4 concludes the series as we see what essentially amounts to order vs. chaos as the old blood takes on wild magic. This doesn’t feel so much as a conclusion as an end to a chapter of a wider arc, leaving much unresolved. Hopefully we see more. The artwork from Tyler Crook is phenomenal.
| Published by Dark Horse
Tumblr media
Marvel Zombies: Resurrection #1 is really damn good. Phillip Kennedy Johnson, Leonard Kirk, Guru-eFX, and Travis Lanham kick off this series with a new angle on the Marvel Zombies, playing up more on the horror angle, with a truly terrifying spread of the disease through a new vector. Gorgeous artwork from Kirk and Guru-eFX.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Monster Planet #1 is the kind of thing that you used to see regularly published by Image and Top Cow, the military action comic that throws in horror elements, from Joe Brusha, Marcelo Mueller, Maxflan Araujo, and Taylor Esposito. It’s not bad, setting up a world where humanity has been turned into dinosaur-like beasts and the remnants of society need to turn to classical monsters for help.
| Published by Zenescope
Tumblr media
The Necromancer’s Map #3 takes a bit of a different approach, giving us a fair amount of action as Tristan’s Will catch up with Bethany and co. as well as some great character building in between the action. Great stuff from Andrea Fort, Michael Christopher Horn, Sam Beck, Ellie Wright, and AndWorld Design.
| Published by Vault
Tumblr media
The Plot #2 is wonderful horror storytelling from Tim Daniel, Michael Moreci, Joshua Hixson, Jordan Boyd, and Jim Campbell. Very creepy build of supernatural events once Chase Blaine and his family arrive back at his ancestral home. Hixson and Boyd’s presentation of the black, gooey masses are also disturbing.
| Published by Vault
Tumblr media
Queen of Bad Dreams #5 concludes this excellent series from Danny Lore, Jordi PĂŠrez, Dearbhla Kelly, and AndWorld Design. Rather interesting confrontation with and revelations about Eleanor Chase here.
| Published by Vault
Tumblr media
Red Goblin: Red Death #1 is a one-shot featuring three stories set during Norman Osborn’s tenure as the Red Goblin at the end of Dan Slott’s run on Amazing Spider-Man. It’s kind of weird that it doesn’t instead tie-in with current events in Absolute Carnage, but it’s not bad for what it is. The art of the first two stories from Pete Woods is great.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Relics of Youth #2 is even better than the first issue, delving deeper into the mysterious tattoos that the kids have been branded with and their connection to the island that they’ve landed on within the Bermuda Triangle. Matt Nicholas, Chad Rebmann, Skylar Partridge, Vladimir Popov, and AndWorld Design are telling a very compelling adventure here.
| Published by Vault
Tumblr media
Roku #1 begins another mini-series focusing on one of the luminary villains in the Valiant Universe, this one from Cullen Bunn, Ramón F. Bachs, Stéphane Paitreau, and Dave Sharpe. It’s full of action and intrigue as Roku is hired by an unknown client to retrieve...someone. Things get more interesting as a new face stands in her way and we find out the unusual nature of the target.
| Published by Valiant
Tumblr media
The Sandman Universe Presents: Hellblazer #1 is a homecoming of sorts for John Constantine, back to his old haunts alongside some of the other Vertigo corner of the DC Universe. Si Spurrier, Marcio Takara, Cris Peter, and Aditya Bidikar spin a yarn that reconstitutes John after a massive magic war led by an evil Tim Hunter. How exactly the pieces fit are anyone’s guess, but it’s a brilliant darker take resetting him here.
| Published by DC Comics - Black Label / The Sandman Universe
Tumblr media
Savage Avengers Annual #1, though largely a self-contained story, is still integral to Conan’s adventure through the Marvel universe and the overall narrative as he, Hellstorm, and Black Widow stumble across a human trafficking ring that bears the marks of Kulan Gath. Gerry Duggan, Ron Garney, Matt Milla, and Travis Lanham deliver a compelling story.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
SFSX #2 does further world and character building, showing us just how much has changed since the Party took over, and how utterly betrayed many of the people from the Dirty Mind felt of Avory abandoning them. Very interesting stuff from Tina Horn, Michael Dowling, Chris O’Halloran, and Steve Wands.
| Published by Image

Silver Surfer: Black #5 concludes what has been a very trippy series from Donny Cates, Tradd Moore, Dave Stewart, and Clayton Cowles. There are some very interesting revelations of the past here, and it really makes you wonder about the Surfer’s new incarnation.

Star Pig #4 concludes the series, kind of, from Delilah S. Dawson, Francesco Gaston, Sebastian Cheng, and Shawn Lee. There’s some rather disturbing tentacles in this one.

Star Wars Adventures: Return to Vader’s Castle #5 brings an end to this round of the series. I think it’s a perfect approach for some all ages “ghost stories” within the Star Wars universe. Wonderful resolution for the framing story from Cavan Scott, Francesco Francavilla, and AndWorld Design.

Tales from the Dark Multiverse: The Death of Superman #1 is the second of these one-shots spotlighting DC events gone horribly wrong, this time giving us a much angrier Lois Lane’s grief at the loss of Superman to Doomsday. Jeff Loveness, Brad Walker, Drew Hennessy, Norm Rapmund, John Kalisz, and Clayton Cowles present her as vengeance against a world that didn’t deserve Superman’s grace, raising some of the questions that you’d often see in The Authority. Only, you know, kind of evil. It’s not bad, but definitely dark.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #99 is the extra-sized penultimate chapter of “City at War” as all of the pieces begin falling into place for the grand finale. The story here from Kevin Eastman, Bobby Curnow, Tom Waltz, Dave Wachter, Ronda Pattison, and Shawn Lee feels truly epic and that something huge may just happen next issue. As it is, there’s still a ton of action here, some interesting developments with the Rat King, more disappointment when it comes to Raph, and something new with the mutagenic bomb.

Tumblr media
Test #5 is very strange. Christopher Sebela, Jen Hickman, Harry Saxon, and Hassan Otsmane-Elhaou end this story as Aleph and Laurel find one another and a new way is planted, but there’s still seeds of something going awry.

Venom #19 largely plays out the end bits for the Maker and Dylan’s portions of Absolute Carnage, with some very interesting revelations. It seems like even bigger seeds are being lain for future stories here. Great art from Iban Coello and Rain Beredo.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media
Witchblade #16 gives us the fight between Alex and Haley, after a few distractions and discursions. The stakes are pretty high here and there are a few rather tense moments as it plays out. Beautiful art from Roberta Ingranata and Bryan Valenza.

Tumblr media
Wonder Woman Annual #3 is largely a flashback tale, set five years ago as Wonder Woman and ARGUS attempt to extract an agent sent to infiltrate Gorilla City to see the legitimacy of Grodd’s rule. What Steve Orlando, V. Ken Marion, Sandu Florea, Hi-Fi, and Pat Brosseau do with is establish a new backstory and interpretation for a very old Wonder Woman foe in a fairly interesting way that even ties in to Event Leviathan. It may strain a bit of credibility for the villainous turn, but that will largely depend on the follow-up.

Doom Upon the World: Aya and Galen made no formal support for either Cassandra, Leliana, or Vivienne for Divine, not wanting to choose between their friends; Aya and Galen defeated Corypheus together while their companions and Inquisition forces fought off the demon horde; and Leliana was chosen as Divine Victoria.
The Descent DLC: The earthquakes were stopped, and the secret origin of lyrium was discovered.
Jaws of Hakkon DLC: Discovered and met Ameridan, shared the truth about Ameridan, killed the dragon, and Aya and Galen both gained a legend-mark from the Avvar.
Trespasser DLC: Iron Bull remained loyal, the Inquisition was disbanded at Aya’s order, and Aya and Galen vowed to redeem Solas.

MARILYN MANOR #1
Magdalene Visaggio (A/CVR A) Marley Zarcone
Where were you in ’81? When the White House goes dark for 17 days in August, the president’s spoiled daughter and her best friend Abe-who claims to be possessed by the spirit of Abe Lincoln-throw a rager at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, unearthing long dead historical figures and government secrets that are better off buried. Sex, drugs, rock ‘n’ roll séances, and secret passageways lead to time-bending mystical romps where past and present collide. But at what cost to Marilyn Kelleher, the world at large, and music television?
Uniting the red-hot Eisner-nominated talents of writer Magdalene Visaggio (Eternity Girl, Kim and Kim) and artist Marley Zarcone (Shade, the Changing Girl, Effigy) for the first time, MARILYN MANOR explores identity, classism, appropriation, and friendship. It’s a rollicking, neon party gone out of bounds when we need it most-set just in time for the greatest pop cultural marriage to date: MTV.
“We’ve been trying to capture the feel, the excitement, the energy of the rise of the New Romantics, of the decade that embraced excess and excitement in hugely over-the-top ways, and filled it with chaos and insanity. This is the weirdest thing I’ve ever written in the best way possible, like an apocalypse directed by John Hughes.”

Strange things are happening in the woods around Ponyville! When ponies start seeing weird shapes, hearing unknown sounds, and losing the tools they need to work, all signs point to a mysterious monster! But it couldn’t actually be the Spirit of the Forest-right?!
PUNKS NOT DEAD: LONDON CALLING #5
David Barnett (A/CVR A) Martin Simmonds

But before that, have Sid and Fergie actually found a way to stop being stuck together? And finally, Dorothy and Asif return to London with Natalie in tow for a battle royale unlike any other. Don’t miss “To the Underworld,” the smashing conclusion to our sophomore arc!
“…razor-sharp dialogue, black humour … dripping in punk rock…” –Tripwire
“…a riot of technicolour and tentacles…extraordinary…” –Hero Collector

Ernest K Fabian Presents:
Northeast Wrestling Match Report:
Pro wrestling fans packed the Bethany town hall in Bethany Ct. for an exciting evening of pro wrestling action.  Ernest wants to send out a quick nod to the friends I rarely see who attended this extravaganza.   it was great to see Ajay Ramirez & Tammy Nolan.  Ernest also wants to give the proverbial nod to my regular wrestling fan buddies, Dakota Lofland, Jay Smith & Gary Lee Solomon.
Disclaimer: As a reporter I use my eyes & ears to follow & report the action to the best of my ability. Does that mean I never make mistakes? Absolutely not! I do get a few facts wrong. Any errata is appreciated & should be listed in the comments section.
Ring Announcer:  Vince Berry
Time Keeper:  Vince Berry
Referees:  Vinnie Lax Lax, Kevin Quinn & Eric S
Singles Match: Travis Gordon retained his "King of Bethany" crown in a match VS "Hard Hittin" Bobby Ocean via pinfall after planting the back of Ocean's head into the mat with his finisher; "the blockbuster."  After the match the two combatants shook hands in a display of sportsmanship.
Singles Match:  "Big Bacon" Brad Hollister in his debut match for Northeast Wrestling beat "All Good" Anthony Greene via pinfall after a seated power bomb.  Hollister dominated this match due to his superior physique & was able to beat Greene relatively quickly.
Tag-team Match:  "The Now"  Vik Dalishus & Hale Collins defeated "Adrenaline Rush" "Dangerous" Dan Evans & Keith Youngblood via pinfall when Dalishus pinned Youngblood after reversing Youngbloods small package.  The fans hated "The Now" & chanted for them to "go home."  "The Now acted like prima donnas & refused to wrestle until the ring had been swept of debris.
During this portion of the card, Northeast heavyweight champion Brian Anthony came out to ringside with his manager; "Showtime" Stevie Stamos & addressed the fans.  The fans chanted "TKO in homage of TK O'Ryan who was slated to face Anthony in the main event for the Northeast title.  Anthony stated that TKO is not a three time Northeast champion like him & that he (Anthony) was beating men such as Rik Flair & Jerry Lawler while TKO was in high school.  Anthony finished by saying that he was not just going to beat TKO, he was going to "kick TKO's ass."  Stamos then took the microphone & said, "TKO, you may be a "wildhorse" but Anthony is a tank.  You will never wear that belt around your skinny waist!"
Singles Match:  "Insanity" Vinny Marseglia stopped "Juice" JT Dunn via pinfall after Marseglia planted Dunn's back into his knees.  Dunn had missed with his signature finisher, "death by elbow" which enabled Marseglia to rally for the victory.  These two combatants were evenly matched and traded multiple near falls throughout the match.
During this portion of the card "Traven" came out to the ring and threw gifts into the audience.  Later during this portion of the card, Dan DeMan came to the ring and threw fake gifts to the fans.  Dan asked Traven for his gift.  That gift turned out to be Ron Zombie who ran out to the ring and planted Dan's head into the mat.  Ron Zombie admonished the fans to "bask in my glow."
Singles Match:  Keith Lee stopped Donovan Dijak via pinfall after executing a seated power bomb off the top rope that drove Dijaks back into the mat.  Lee was especially impressive for a man his size & was able to execute high drop-kicks and other moves that require extreme agility.  At the climax of this match, Dijak flipped out of the ring but was caught by Lee at ringside.  Later in the match, Scotty Slade came out to the ring with a chair but Lee was able to stop him by leaping out of the ring onto both men.   After the match Dijak pretended to shake hands with Lee but then hit Lee with a chair once in the mid-section & twice on the back.  Lee swore he would get revenge on Dijak.
Singles Match:  "Cold Steel" Chuck O'Neil got by "Sexy Beast" Bull Dread via submission at 1:30 after converting a power bomb into a devastating arm bar that made Dread tap out quickly..
Singles Match:  Wrecking Ball Legursky destroyed "Miracle" Mike Bennet via pinfall after utilizing a military press slam converted into a splash.  Bennet went for a quick attack at the beginning of the match.   Bennet hit Wrecking Ball with a series of fists & elbows but Wrecking Ball recovered quickly & delivered a series of big chops on Bennet.  Wrecking Ball then planted Bennet's shoulder into the ring-post & Bennet's head into the ring apron.  Bennet was able to rally and regain a temporary advantage & a near fall after a spear off the 2nd rope.  Bennet was then able to plant Wrecking Ball's head into the mat 2 times but Wrecking Ball recovered and reversed the third attempt for the pinfall victory.
Tag-team Match:  "The Battle Brothers" (Chris & Anthony) beat "That Guy" Scotty Slade & Cam Zagami via pinfall after Anthony pinned Cam following a double slam from both of the Battle Brothers.  A highlight of this match was when Anthony Battle delivered a Belly to Back Suplex on both of his opponents at the same time.
MAIN EVENT:
Northeast Wrestling Championship Match:  TK O'Ryan won the Northeast championship in his match against Brian Anthony (with manager; Stevie Stamos) via submission after utilizing a variation of a cloverleaf.  This match began when Anthony attacked TKO whilst TKO was distracted by Stamos.  Anthony immediately resorted to rule breaking tactics by choking TKO with his foot.  Stamos cheated multiple times during this match by choking TKO while the referee was distracted.  A highlight of this match was when Anthony suplexed TKO on the floor.  TKO was barely able to get back into the ring before the 10 count.  Anthony was able to deliver 3 chops, a forearm & a kick to the head against TKO.  Anthony was then able to score a near fall against TKO after an elbow off the top rope.  At the climax of this match, TKO gained a near fall after a roll-up but Stamos interfered.  This interference enraged TKO, who dove out of the ring onto Stamos, knocking Stamos unconscious. TKO then re-entered the ring and was able to rally for the submission victory.  The fans were ecstatic.
Northeast Wrestling returns to Bethany Ct. on January 21st.
See you at the matches!         .
