Ritchie Simpson continued to search frantically for the connection out of the computer and back to his body as he begged John to explain what he meant by saying “Goodbye.”

Had John disconnected him? He knew John’s sense of humor wasn’t the lightest, especially after Newcastle drove them all a bit insane, but that felt too far even for him. Nah, he’d probably just gotten himself a bit lost in the wave of energy he’d experienced in the Tongues of Fire network and was accidentally looking for his body in the wrong spot.

He pulled himself back and let his mental connection to the digital world expand outward, probing the rest of the machine for the connection. He knew he was in the right system, so as long as he looked thoroughly he’d definitely fi—

Everything flashed a surge of blinding white and then was replaced by pure darkness. He thought he screamed, but he couldn’t hear his own voice. Couldn’t even feel his own thoughts. Trapped in one single instant that stretched for indeterminable eons. Then, eventually (or was it immediately?), awareness began to trickle back.

He was still in the computer, though it felt… different, somehow. His thoughts still weren’t entirely in order. The first possible hints towards his location he found were the sound voices trickling through from the outside world. Voices he didn’t recognize. Young voices.

“I’m happy to help, Tuck, but I’m not really sure what you expect me to do here. You’re way better than me at this computer stuff than me.”

“By all means, feel free to keep complimenting me, but this has been frying my brain, man. I got this thing secondhand, and the system should be quite powerful, but there’s something using up a ton of its processing and I can’t figure out what. I was hoping you could do your ‘enter into the computer’ thing and see if you see anything.”

Hey unpopular opinion but JJ dying isn't bad writing, it's just sad. It's devastating and I bawled my eyes out, and it sucks that actors not being super professional is possibly what led to this, but it does make sense character wise. Like I can't say it doesn't. And I think they did a great job writing him off, I certainly prefer him dying over being written off Alex Karev style (character assassination of the century). I'm also interested to see how this affects the group.

I don't know, it just seems to me that everytime something unfair happens in a story, there's people saying it's bad writing, but...unfair things happen all the time? That's actually a very interesting thing to explore if done right, and I feel like it was in this case.

I want to make a longer post about this someday but: I think Arya's TWOW arc is going to include her coming to terms with her identity as a Lady. This has been an ongoing conflict with her since her first chapter and I think her flowering in winds is going to mark a turning point. The theory of her having an apprenticeship with the courtesans holds a lot of weight and the idea of Arya going through puberty among a group of unconventional women she's fostered a positive relationship with is just too perfect. It would really have an impact on Arya reconciling her personal idea of what a Lady should be. There's also a lot that she could learn from them in terms of courtesies, communication, appearances, body-language, etc. that would elevate her current skill-set and ways her relationship with them could push the plot.

Not to mention she will undoubtedly reclaim her identity as Arya Stark, and her being a Lady is inseparable from that. Arya Stark is a Lady Stark and being a Lady is a social position, not a measure of how well someone preforms feminine tasks. She shouldn't have to relinquish her position because she doesn't fit patriarchal standards. That's not to say that she's ever going to be the perfect example of a traditional Lady but what I think will happen is that she becomes capable of playing the part. She plays several identities throughout the series but she's always been Arya underneath, so I think it's appropriate that she learns to adopt a "persona" that's part of her. Her remembering Ned putting on his "Lord's face" (+ the various examples of other characters being separate from their ruling persona) makes me think that Arya will be donning her "Lady's face" when she makes a return to Westeros.

I'm attempting to weave a backstory timeline in my mind for the characters, and I'm just now realizing that Kaz broke his leg and met Jesper all in the same year. Then, a few months later probably, Inej arrives in Ketterdam.

Obvious stuff if I just took more time to think about it, but I think it's really neat how their storylines all converge like that

Later, Poundcake is laying her head down and smiling as Mori gently holds her still with one paw as he grooms her just under her ear, purring.

Anticipation

☆ Day 1: Anticipation , Zhongli / Childe

In hindsight, messing with Zhongli during an official meeting was a mistake.

It wasn’t Childe’s fault though! Sat across from Zhongli within that tiny meeting room, close enough that their knees brushed every time he so much as breathed, it was impossible to ignore the older man’s voice waxing poetry about taxation and new zoning laws. It didn’t matter what the man spoke about: he did so eloquently, exquisitely, and Childe found himself hanging off every word. Which was something he couldn’t just do on the job with his subordinates not so discreetly throwing glances between him and the prettiest man in Liyue.

Of course he’d do something about it. It was a matter of his job!

Okay, so maybe touching the consultant’s knee mid-sentence was a little inappropriate. And he probably should have stopped when Katya caught his eye, or when Zhongli stiffened and shot him a glare mid-sentence. Perhaps, just a chance, he could have stopped at drumming his fingers on Zhongli’s calf instead of crawling them up towards the spot he’d knew would earn him a shriek…

If he did, at least he wouldn’t be squirming in anticipation like this.

“Are you reflecting properly?”

“Yes?”

Childe bites back a giggle as Zhongli responds not with words but another squeeze of his knee, fingers trailing almost carelessly along his leg. They are most definitely not careless though, not in the least, when the right hand very threateningly pulls at his bootstraps as the left drags slow fingers over his inner thigh. He barely manages to not flinch when those fingers deliver two sharp pinches to the sensitive area, grin spreading nervously across his face.

“Ajax?”

“Wha-huh?”

Zhongli’s lips twitch. The sound of his boot zipper being pulled down is suddenly the loudest noise in the room. “I asked what you were thinking about.”

“Oh, well, you know!” How about how the thud of his left boot against the floor echoes in his ear, or the way Zhongli’s fingers tighten around his side earning a choked yelp? Or the fact that he could probably dissolve into a literal puddle of Hydro before turning into a metaphorical one, but doing so means leaving the amused twinkle in Zhongli’s eye and he kind of doesn’t want to?

“I’m afraid I don’t know if you don’t tell me.”

“Zhoongliiiii,” he stresses. Not whines! He most definitely doesn’t whine, eyes pleading, as Zhongli thumbs his hips in a slow mimicry of how he’d teased the other during the meeting. The tightening of his grip on his ankle sends shivers up his spine, and a whimper escapes through clenched teeth.

“Yes, Ajax?”

Dear archons. It’s worse when he knows exactly what’s next but not when, and his leg bobs. A half giggle does escape his lips when Zhongli squeezes his ankle, fingers lazily spidering up his foot. Childe’s grin wavers on the edge of desperate as Zhongli’s other hand settles itself firmly on his waist; it seems he’s not the only one strung tight in anticipation.

He swallows. “Have… mercy?”

Zhongli smiles at last. It is every bit as beautiful as when it split his face hours ago at the meeting table, laughter brightening up the room, and the sight of it is almost enough to render Childe’s impending doom worth it.

“I will give as much mercy as you offer your foes.”

The last thought that rings through his brain before dissolving into begging and laughter is that maybe he should’ve paid more attention during the meeting and taken Hu Tao up on that 50% off coffin deal after all.
