I was sitting in my hostel's common room (journaling and absentmindedly eating dinner) and tripped and fell into a two hour discussion with a British man who happened to be sitting there as well. We discussed international politics and I managed to hold my own---who knew I had this many opinions about the ICJ? Also he kissed my hand afterward, which has to be the most charming thing to happen to me in recent history. Now I'm sweetly cradled in wine bed and listening to a recording of the opera I wanted to see...it's okay, actually. Everything is wonderful.

#I went to the grocery store and bought a bunch of wine and cheese and crackers. excellent decision!#the lesser american roadtrip #you know I want to give credit to my trip to dublin about a year ago.#I think americans generally are weirded out by international travel; our country is so big and if you're used to a certain region #leaving feels.....strange.#but if you just hang out people will talk to you. I talked to a woman about swans two days ago; the curators here are young and lovely #so they don't talk to me but you know who does? older women. I am friend-shaped to them.#I am sitting listening to an opera with the window open and the sound of rain and it's lovely.

#I also think american exceptionalism and their bizarre cultural one-way street isolation plays a role #i think it's different if you actually see other countries as equals and see that they have female leaders and realise that it's #not going downhill it's not solving everything it's business as usual and it's just another boring fucking politician #and this makes the gender of the candidate LESS (not saying no) issue people obsess about or feel a need to discuss #(e.g. people laying into the appearance of female politicians? certainly misogyny. making jokes about cooking and shoes? definitely too #but I feel like that was more a 'gotta insult these fucking politicians' and gender being one of the targets when people want to do that)#but if you're the US and giant parts of the populace think they're the specialmost extra complicatedest country in this our planetworld #the fact that it works for so many other countries takes a much lower priority #because 'yeah sure a woman can govern a....'checks notes' Fineland and United Kingdom of England or Germanland'#but the US of freedom? we got a red button and what if she's on her period!!?! We are a REAL country!!'#not to mention how deeply entrenched the idea of the US as being CONSTANTLY under attack is and the president as the PROTECTOR #and that protector needs to be daddy of course #i also think the different attitude to leaders plays a role #because a part of misogyny is how much people love to HATE women - to sink their teeth into them and demonise them for every flaw #so any country that has some kind of weird worship of their leaders or sees them as some heroes or extra-class of person*#in my opinion might have a harder time to elect a woman because the moment a woman becomes a candidate #you just have to find the right flaw to go on and on about to make the population absolutely hate her or question her competency #meanwhile the general slack we cut men means they can do whatever but somehow still be compatible with that concept of leadership #(*not just the US ....though a lot of other countries with similar attitudes to their leaders are not standing out as democracies tbh)

okay so this is not about anything specific just a response to some back-and-forths i've been been seeing recently but it can be true that some americans are entitled and ignorant when encountering other cultures AND that some europeans have a superiority complex towards americans that make them hair triggered against any comment from americans about their experience in europe. like trust that i really try hard to see both sides, but sometimes, when an american talks about their experience in europe or (god forbid) complains about it, some europeans will respond with such vitriol and condescension that really isn't warranted in the slightest. in the end, we really are so much more alike than we are different. people are the same everywhere, they really really are. everyone complains, everyone shit talks, everyone has their own form of ignorance. it's just that the particular flavour changes from place to place. everyone is so defensive and i don't get why we have such violent reactions when talking about cultural differences. please, can we stop the fighting it's so pointless.

#OBVIOUSLY ik not all of europe is the same #obviously #but like i do think about this a lot bc #yeah a lot of americans do make fools of themselves #but it's just as foolish when europeans try and clap back by making fun of americans for things that are out of their control #like #why are people like this i really don't get it #i saw some girl on tt say that it was confusing to her that french ppl would introduce themselves as being from #the 35 or the 91 bc… if you haven’t been hearing it your whole life it’s not easy to remember a list of numbers that’s only kinda relevant #like day to day #she wasn’t mean she was just like it’s a bit frustrating because if they introduced with their region #or the name of their department i would know it but its just harder for me as a foreigner to remember all the numbers #(side note but like idk if this is universal but i never remember numbers in french like i have to say the english numbers outloud)#(like house numbers or phone numbers or stuff like that idk why that is)#and then some french woman stitched her essentially saying well if you can’t remember the numbers why don’t you go back to your country #like…#that was not a proportionate response #like at all
