some stuff about some interesting rooms in signalis and their music (warning: signalis spoilers)

fun fact about the signalis soundtrack:

while listening to them because they're especially charming to me, i was wondering what was the link between those two songs with basically the same name: ritual and ritual (nowhere). thought they sounded pretty similar, but for some reason i couldn't really place the difference between them; until i remembered one thing: the game likes to fuck with you, and the soundtrack is no exception.

in fact, the song 33. Ritual (Nowhere) is the reversed version of 11. Ritual. (this happens in another instance, where 51. Falke's Theme is the reversed version of 50. Ariane's Theme; although that was slightly more expected)

now, these two songs play in two specific rooms, which are definitely correlated to each other:

11. Ritual plays in B3, in the room where the five keys have to be inserted to access the surgery;

33. Ritual (Nowhere) plays in the analogue room in nowhere, where the plates have to be inserted.

maybe the brainrot is especially advancing but the fact that 33 is a multiple of 11 does things to me; as does the fact that 3+3=6 (rule of six). probably unrelated but hey i like to overanalyze things! :) the room before the surgery (first image) does enact the rule of six by making it 5+1 (actually common in the game) (another fun fact: the slots to insert the cards in have the same symbols as the plates).

the room in nowhere (second image) has six proper slots to insert the plates in; the plate of balance symbol is reversed (the triangle one).

the rooms are identical; in the pre-surgery room there are six chairs and some decorative? plants (don't remember the flavor text); meanwhile the nowhere room is a mockery of this, with its 5 cages and those peculiar...flesh tendrils writhing in the background. the fact that the game wants you to recognize you've already been through this in the same gameplay but in a different, much less cursed way, is awesome to me. nowhere does in fact ooze with the rule of six concept (whereas the game prior to this...whatever nowhere is doesn't really enforce the rule of six if not for the various posters or the inventory, which is also a gameplay choice; we do have the six number code for the first safe, which is symbolic on its own), as does the rest of the game after it. in nowhere, we got six plates, three dolls, three rings, three spare items (two needed to progress, which are the rusted key and the incense; one optional (small bottle) if you want the nitro rifle earlier than the falke fight). in rotfront we have six tarot cards and consequently six moons to reposition.

another thing: just noticed there are symbols near the center in the surgery door puzzle that look awfully similar to the cryo pod unused puzzle symbols.

wonder if there is any correlation in the numbers being (from top left, counter-clockwise): 2,7, 1, 6, 4 (following the order of numbers on the safe).

looking at the time: oh yeah, it's dissection analysis o'clock.

i've talked about how i think leo's view on what it means to be a leader is very misconstrued, but i didn't really go into specifics like i wanted. so here i am, doing just that.

firstly, i'm going to make this generalized enough so that it's not about any particular iteration, though i might put in details that aren't a universal part to leo's character.

i once said that "leo believes the leader is always the one to make the right choices" and by that i mean, the leader has to. he tries to think over his words carefully (there was a post for 2003 pointing out that leo stumbles on his words quite a bit and i love this detail) because he's trying to mimic his idea of a hero. not only is he the one meant to make the decisive calls, but in an imprudent, childish way, i think his ego has also convinced him that the title of leader makes his opinion more valuable djsaklg. he's kind of a funny, bossy older sibling like that.

he's full to the brim with anxiety and worst-case scenarios because he knows real life is dangerous and he is the one in-charge. rise fics have done a lovely job of showcasing the fact that leo struggles to really seem them as a team unless it's convenient for him, but i'd argue all leos (save for a few) are like this. people need to listen to him, because of course the leader knows best! leaders and heroes are synonymous, always saving the day... (...it's why rise leo doesn't think he should be leader-)

i have a little headcanon about his perfectionism that isn't completely relevant to this conversation, but i want to include it regardless. i think some of his perfectionism comes from a place of guilt and just general worries. he doesn't mind training extra or things like that, but i'm not too sure he likes it either. overdoing it can make him feel more reassured, and training better means he can make sure missions go smoother. leaders are the captains, and a captain always goes down with his ship.

anyways, if leadership to him is like being in-charge and having to be a shield, who would he be his ideal image of that to mirror? barring his cartoon heroes, it would be his father. leo has always tried to be like the person he admires most. i don't fully know why, but that makes me Sad. most kids think of their fathers as their heroes, and for all of the turtles, well. he really is one.

being the older child (in most iterations), leo unconsciously places himself on a similar pedestal as his father, copying what he does because he wants to be just like him.

.... for 2003 and 2012, yes. mirage? idw? less so. i just wrote a whole fic on the city at war arc (love me, love my dog) for the original comics that helped inspire this post. constantly leo mentions "growing up" in that arc, following it up by thinking they shouldn't stick within everything their father has taught him. he's leaving his father's shadow - that's what it means to grow up to him.

his brothers will always come before his father, no matter how much he admires him. in 2012, i truly do think leo would try too hard to become a father to his brothers. not only for their sakes, but because he's always been there, copying his father. he's trying to make his father stay by becoming more like him. he won't have to search for him in the walls of their home if he feels like he's right beside him.

^ i love this train of thought for mirage as well because in city at war he's gradually realizing that he doesn't know what he would do without splinter to back up his choices. he's having to think for himself and it's making him think that maybe he isn't as much like his father as he had always tried to be.

no matter the iteration, leo growing up is always becoming his own version of a leader (staring so badly at idw leo). it's a bittersweet thing, but it was a thought that occurred to me after leo returned from training with the ancient one in 2003. splinter already taught him everything, so why wasn't it enough? when will he teach him how to properly protect everyone like he wants to.

splinter is a VERY flawed character in every single iteration, and i think one of the most innocently child-like characteristics of leo is the way he idolizes him.

and this what do i even have to say. he is just so gentle and meticulous with her it makes my heart explode. he sure didn't have to delicately take her hand and open it for her and drop the coins in and close it for her and hOLD IT. but he sure did

Who would Jian peg as the cult leader if he’s thinking of attempting murder? Is Diavolo letting him in on the secret a choice or more of a you came here armed to confront me and this is why you’re wrong and it won’t work

i think it's more that diavolo witnesses jian's extremely determined method of investigation - the friendly-but-increasingly-persistent needling of his targets, the little traps he sets up, the dogged refusal to let go until he extracts the truth - and comes to the natural conclusion that jian might very well take matters into his own hands

i do think he'd quickly ascertain diavolo as a leader, but i feel like he'd also set his sights on barbatos... i could see him coming and going from simeon's cafe often, and he has a sort of mysteriously unsettling vibe that i feel would put jian on guard

from his pov, barbatos is this strange quiet guy who he keeps running into at the cafe, who simeon seems slightly nervous around, and who will interrupt a conversation/subtly warn simeon when it seems like he might say something incriminating...

he works for a company that jian is 100% sure does not legally exist, consistently brings very expensive teas with him on his visits, and one time he says something that heavily implies (to jian, anyway) that he's buried a body before. now, jian's expertise is murder, so for a time he turns his attention to this potential case

what he doesn't know is that this was roughly 3847 years ago, and barbatos is genuinely quite unsettled by jian's ability to Find things. unfortunately, as a time demon, he drags quite a lot of things with him into the present, and jian is picking said things apart with surgical precision (and grinning like a happy old dog the whole time)
