I seriously fucking swear, if WotC doesn't give us a Nissa/Chandra commander duo in the next Zendikar set, I will kill someone. We NEED the Nissa and Chandra partner commanders asap. And if they're made for a precon, it's name better reference that they're dating. Mark Rosewater, make this happen.

What's your favorite Snow card?
The sort-of cheating answer is Dead of Winter, where I got to directly reference the old Ice Age comics:
Actual snow card? Probably Dark Depths? I'd love to Marit Lage people in Legacy if I could afford to play Legacy.

There has been some talk about ante cards over the past week or two on mark rosewater's blog, blogatog. Some have argued for the return of ante on a card or two in sets like modern horizons 3 since they resuse a lot of older mechanics and throwbacks to older cards. I am not sure if anyone is actually serious about wanting ante to return or if it is just a meme dream but I do not know a single person that has ever played for ante or with ante cards. The ante cards and rules remind me of the battle city season of Yu-gi-oh where everyone had to gamble their rarest card in each duel. From a legal standpoint I can see why a card game would not want to pursue this idea as this is very close to gambling. While, wizards of the coast does not acknowledge the secondar market, all cards have some value and you do not want kids losing their property. All of the snte cards are basically banned in every format including commander so what is the point of discussing them at all? First, it is interesting to see the mindset of designers in the early days. Imagine is ante had been popular instead of being the most hated mechanic of all time according to Mark Rosewater. We could be putting our blinged out serialized cards on the line! Now I can see why ante contradicts certain aspects of the game. If I want to bling out my deck or show off all my rare cards in one deck that does not push me to want to play for ante. I would construct decks with the least expensive cards with the highest probability of winning games. Deck construction would be totally different and non-intuitive as you would not want to play the strongest cards for fear of losing them and having to face them in subsequent duels. Instead, you would put easily replaceable cards in your deck. Imagine if you had to ante reserved list cards? I do not think ante cards are fun in any way. Randomly losing an expensive card or even a card with sentimental valuer is backbreaking and I think would lead to a lot of people leaving the game frustrated and unhappy as the best cards get plucked away. This would also lead to situations where people with a lot of money would prey on those willing to invest less in the game. games are already pay to win so this would make it seem more like who can afford to replace cards. I am going to discuss all the ante cards separately but I did want to talk a little about the ante mechanic as a whole. Maybe we see an ante card in an unset? Amulet of Quoz actually has some lore behind it which is a real reason to discuss some of the reserved list ante cards individually. The amulet of Quoz was used by someone in the Carthalion family to banish Tevesh Szat from dominaria. So, what does this card do? In a hypothetic world where every duel was for ante would you play this card? I don't think you do. for 6 mana your opponent either antes another card or the opponent can choose to end the game immediately by deciding the outcome with a coin flip. If the opponent is losing or does not think they can win they will likely just have the game decided with a toss of a coin. However, if the game is even or the opponent thinks they can win then this does nothing to help you actually win the game for 6 mana. Albeit, getting extra cards for a victory is tempting and if you really need to end a game because you have to go home then you can use this. Should commander be played with ante? maybe we can start a commander format with ante that gambles reserved list cards for fun.

Tevesh Szat says of Shandalar: "The Mana. It breathes. Almost sssentient." What was he talking about? Is Shandalar's mana still different post-mending?
Yes, but It’s identity is mostly “generic high fantasy plane with secrets(tm)”. I think Invasion of Shandalar’s back face references the mana thing.

"I am entirely counting on him betraying us!" reminds me of something from Magic: the Gathering's story.
During the first Phyrexian Invasion, Urza (one of the greatest Planeswalkers in the multiverse) recruited eight other Planeswalkers and gave them mech suits to counter-invade Phyrexia.
One of them was an evil bastard called Tevesh Szat, who Urza only brought along because he knew that Tevesh would betray them, and could then use that as a justification to turn Tevesh into the magical fuel for a bomb that would utterly destroy Phyrexia.
This royally pissed off the other members of the Nine, not least of which because Tevesh killed two of them, one of which was the partner of another member.
It was also pointless, because Urza decided he couldn't destroy a place of such potential knowledge and dismantled the bombs.
Well that's fucked like BRUH

i would say that the phrase "enchant planeswalker" evokes imagery of the greediest possible win-more designs imaginable, and for most of these, that seems to be the case. but the black card in this cycle is actually a serious contender:
the ult ability on this card is the strongest out of all of them, and it only costs 2 mana to deploy this, meaning if you already have an 8-loyalty planeswalker you can use this to start a big counter war with a ton of mana open. if you're not particularly close to ult, you can still jam this on a walker for a low mana-investment and protect it by trading off any creatures that swing into it.
as for planeswalkers, i think Karn and Ugin are the most obvious combinations with this since they have enough loyalty to ult and survive the turn after you play them. Llolth, the Spider Queen can also give you the loyalty you need if you can kill enough creatures in one turn. and it should go without saying that this is an auto-include in Tevesh Szat lists.

Kraum x Tevesh - Discount cEDH Decks for Beginners
In an attempt to further democratize this lovely format we at The Paradox Engine have been hard at work building “challenger decks” for the cEDH sub variant format.
These decks aren’t meant as a “budget friendly” entry point into cedh. Our first one Kraum Tevesh.
Thoughts and Opinions?

Dead of Winter (Modern Horizons No. 85, Illus. Zack Stella)
With February coming soon, I'm slowly feeling drawn closer and closer to Lorwyn-style spring imagery. But before the winter goes, I'm going to talk about some snow- and winter-themed MtG illustrations.
The winter solstice, and the week between Christmas and New Year's, is one of my favourite times of the year. Life slows down, and the cold and darkness sometimes makes it feel like time itself has come to a standstill. Snow only enhances this feeling, absorbing sound and covering the landscape in a soft silence.
Most people spend their time indoors around this time of the year, so even a short walk around the dark neighbourhood, only lit by streetlamps and christmas decorations, can lead to somewhat existential thoughts. Not in a depressing way though, for me at least. There was darkness and cold before we existed, and everything will return to that state eventually. There will be a long time stillness, before the next sparks of light and new voices start to emerge again. It's not scary, it's just how things are. There is even a weird sense of comfort in knowing that all things eventually come to their end.
The illustration for Dead of Winter encapsulates this feeling of stasis, quiet, dark and finality almost perfectly (although it's a lot more violent). The cherry on top is the minimalistic flavor text that accompanies it:
“At last, silence.” —Tevesh Szat
In MtG color pie terms "black" characters are often portrayed as wanting more - wealth, power, influence, etc. But the idea of a character that is just so weary of the world that he simply wants everyone to shut up (forever) is kind of interesting.
Viewed through this lens, Dead of Winter shows the end result of such a character wielding their destructive magic. All the fighting has stopped, everyone has died, and all that remains is the howling of the wind as the world drifts away into an endless night. The magic wielder sits in his winterland fortress, reveling in the complete silence he alone gets to enjoy. It's a chilling image - no pun intended.

in particular, it's a reference to the flavor text of cabal evangel:
we can see that same set of titles listed as the search criteria, although the flavor text indicates there are even more titles he's claimed
Evincar of the Stronghold = Ascendant Evincar (Crovax)
Scion of Darkness = Scion of Darkness
Doom of Fools = Tevesh Szat
Lord of the Wastes = Yawgmoth
Master of the Ebon Hand = Ebon Praetor
Eternal Patriarch of the Cabal = Cabal Patriarch
Hi Mark! I have a very silly question for you: I was going through scryfall and noticed that there's a tag for "is: belzenlok" and I've been wracking my brain trying to think up answers, but I'm coming up short. Maybe you have the answer?
Belzenlok started taking credit for the work of other people trying to change the history so it referenced him instead of them. I believe those are the ones he took credit for.
