Eihi Shiina in Audition (Takashi Miike, 1999)
Cast: Ryo Ishibashi, Eihi Shiina, Tetsu Sawaki, Jun Kunimura, Renji Ishibashi, Miyuki Matsuda, Toshie Negishi, Ren Osugi. Screenplay: Daisuke Tengan, based on a novel by Ryu Murakami. Cinematography: Hideo Yamamoto. Production design: Tatsuo Ozeki. Film editing: Yasushi Shimamura. Music: Koji Endo.
Takashi Miike's Audtition evokes so many genres -- the femme fatale fable, the succubus myth, feminist revenge stories, body horror, even torture porn -- that it risks being overloaded with subtext. At the same time, combining all of those themes and tropes is what makes it rise above most horror movies. It's both gripping and audacious. Much of its audacity lies in the creation of an initially sympathetic protagonist, Shigeharu Aoyama (Ryo Ishibashi), whom we originally see at the deathbed of his wife with his young son, who has just entered the hospital room with a present for his mother. Years later, we see Aoyama with his son, Shigehiko (Tetsu Sawaki), now a bright, handsome teenager with a pretty girlfriend and an absorbing interest in paleontology. Aoyama realizes that now that his son is almost grown up, he'll be left alone, so in a conversation with a friend, a film producer, a scheme is hatched: They will put out a casting call for young women, and in the audition process Aoyama will find another potential wife. Almost immediately, Aoyama is drawn to the beautiful Asami Yamazaki (Eihi Shiina), whose résumé says she trained in classical ballet until she incurred a hip injury and is now only partially employed in a bar. Aoyama's infatuation will slowly turn into terror. The moral crux of the film lies in whether the grisly punishment Aoyama receives fits the crime, his sexist attempt to forestall his loneliness. On that score, at least, Audition fails: Asami's actions go well beyond anything endorsed by the Me Too movement. So in the debate whether Audition is feminist or misogynist, I have to conclude that it's neither. It's just a well-made horror movie without a message of any coherence.

Audition (Japón, 1999)
(53) Reseña escrita por: Y. G.
Dirige: Takashi Miike Guión: Daisuke Tengan Actúan: Eihi Shiina, Ryo Ishibashi, Jun Kunimura, Tetsu Sawaki

Horror movie 5/31
Audition (Miike, 1999)
You can’t tell me this isn’t a comedy.
Seriously, the first 35-40 minutes plays like a Tom Hanks film. You have this loving, overworked father Shingeharu (Roy Ishibashi) who lost his wife seven years prior. His son Shingehiko (Tetsu Sawaki) suggests that he should remarry, and he agrees. His best friend Yasuhisa (Jun Kunimura) , who happens to be a movie producer, suggests they hold a mock audition for him to find a potential wife. He becomes smitten with the girl Asami Yamazaki (Eihi Shiina) after reading her essay for the “audition.” He asks her out four days after the audition, she just happened to be next to the phone.
This film makes frequent use of the long take wide shot. At first it’s odd and you question why the director chose to do this, but this film plays the long game. After a bag gets ruffled you’ll be dreading that shot. It’s honestly brilliant.
When the twist came I honestly couldn’t stop laughing. Out of all the girls he has a crush on just so happens to be a murderous psychopath. Womp womp.
This film gets real violent, real quick. It’s also unique because it’s a romcom turned horror film. Jim Rash would be a great lead in the American remake.

Audition (Odishon)
(1999) Unrated - 1hr 55m [Japanese - Eng. Subs]
Director Takashi Miike fashions an explosive drama in Audition. Shigeharu Aoyama (Ryo Ishibashi) has lived as a widower for too long and decides it's time to marry again. But how will he find a wife? When a friend suggests he hold a fake audition to pick the right woman, he takes him up on it -- only to realize that his choice may be a better actress than he bargained for.

Review: Audition
1999 Starring Ryo Ishibashi, Eihi Shiina, and Tetsu Sawaki Directed by Takashi Miike Written by Ryû Murakami (novel), Daisuke Tengan (screenplay) A middle-aged widower looks to get remarried by holding an audition arranged by his television producer friend. The girl he chooses, however, may not be all what she seems. Reviewed by Elly the Merciless Shigeharu Aoyama sits next to his dying wife in the hospital. She gasps her last just moments before the couple's young son, Shigehiko, arrives with a "get-well-soon" gift for her. So begins what appears to be a soft-hearted romantic movie by director Takashi Miike. Years later, Shigeharu sits in a bar with his best friend, a local television producer, to whom he confides that he has decided to remarry. At the friend's urging, the two set up an audition screening for young women under the guise of making a new television movie. While all the girls have their talents, Shigehiru is taken with a soft spoken young woman who claims to have been a former dancer. ......I feel like I need to take this bit of space to point out, THIS IS A HORROR MOVIE. Shigeharu's friend finds something quite eerie about the young woman, Asami, and urges him not to see her again. Shigeharu disregards the advice and calls Asami to see her again and we are treated to a shot of her sitting in almost a catatonic state, hair covering her eyes, as the phone rings several times before she, after giving an eerie, knowing smile, answers.... It is here I feel I need to stop my description because to say anything of what happens beyond this point would be a disservice to you, the viewer, as it would ruin what is a great example of how a well-made horror movie can suck you in with its promises and finally show you its true form. The first impression one might have when watching this is to turn it off because of the way it starts. I cannot urge you enough to resist this temptation, the payoff is well worth it. Director Takashi Miike once again proves his ability to twist and bend a story into a concoction of such terror even I found myself disturbed at the climax of the film and was left wondering if what I had seen was really what was happening or just my imagination. Pros: This movie has one of the best twists I've witnessed second only to my viewing of The Last Exorcism (review to come later). The music, while sparse, is generally catchy and reflects the dual nature of the film's tone. Praise especially for Eihi Shiina for her depiction of Asami and her dual nature. Cons: The one problem I had with this movie was that certain instances towards the end seemed to get jumbled over on themselves. Of course there were spots that dragged along, but then again, most good movies have those anyway and these in general were negligible. Bottom Line: If you're a fan of Takashi Miike or Japanese Horror in general, Audition is a must. Like I said, make yourself resist the urge to turn it off and discount it as a run-of-the-mill romantic movie. You'll really be glad you did. Rating: Rare This is a bloody, bloody piece of meat.
