What’s the Druid’s favorite food?

He doesn’t have a favorite food. He appreciates all of it. Also, he does eat meat! Animals in the wild eat meat. Circle of life kind of thing. Every time he eats meat he thanks his meal for giving him energy and life and that its death won’t be in vain.

I keep spamming you with asks so no rush to answer, but - do you have any headcanons on what food would've been common in Nargothrond? Do you already have a post on it and I somehow failed to find it? --tolkien-feels

I love asks like this because I love doing research on botany and climate and stuff to determine what food would be available to grow, hunt, gather, etc and what would have to be traded for and how and where, etc. Anyways we all already know that. I’m just trying to give more reason to keep sending me this stuff :)

OK so I have some thoughts and notes on the environment of Western Beleriand here and I’ve pulled from that a lot. It also has some shorter headcanons on food there! 

Nargothrond is a system of caves underneath a series of forested hills called the Taur en Foreth or Forest of Hunters in Western Beleriand. The river Narog runs just East of the caverns, cutting through the Taur-en-Foreth. The Realm of Nargothrond also encompasses the Talath Dirnen or Guarded Plain to the North of the caverns. This was a plain fortified with elvenmade hills including the most prominent, Amon Ethir or the Hill of Spies. 

Most food in Nargothrond obviously comes from beyond the caves. Especially during the construction of the city, hunting and gathering were the most common sources of food with Finrod’s dwarven allies also contributing. I personally headcanon that many forms of food preservation were taught to Finrod by the Dwarves of the Ered Luin including candied fruits and salted meats. Candied fruits became a favored delicacy in Nargothrond, usually wild cherry. 

Deer, elk, birds such as pheasants, grouse, and quail are the most frequent game. Trout, specifically freshwater brown trout are caught south of the doors of Nargothrond. There are...stranger creatures in the Nan Tethren and to the North but these...should not be caught or eaten. 

Daylilies, wild fennel, wild carrots, crosne, parsley (leaves and roots), dandelions (leaves and roots), and wild parsnips are gathered in the hills and forests and sometimes cooked with herbs such dill, summer savory, sage, and other herbs and spices received through trade with both dwarven and elven allies.  Salt and pepper were largely traded from by the dwarves of Ered Luin though there were some salt deposits in Western Beleriand. (In some parts of  Ossiriand and in Nevrast for example there were warmer regions some otherwise tropical herbs could be grown and cultivated. Over the Ered Luin elves, men and dwarves also cultivated these plants).

As I mentioned on my previous post, once Nargothrond was built, there was a period of time that allowed for some farming and agriculture though hunting and gathering remained an important source of food. Formal gardens were rare, rather, experimentation and cultivation of existing plants and sometimes animals were more often utilized. Mushrooms and root vegetables were some of the more common flora

Rye grasses (not to be confused with ryegrasses) were nourished in the outer Southern reaches of the Talath Dirnen where there was more protection and small, hard loaves of bread became a staple, often eaten with jam from orchard fruits. The Rye seeds were gifts from elves East of Nargothrond closer to Ossiriand as part of a trade beginning. 

Water plants such as pennywort and watercress were also eaten both fresh and dried. 

Mountain sheep and goats produced milk that was collected by both dwarves and elves in the Eastern parts of Beleriand and East of the Ered Luin. I headcanon for example that Bëor’s folk had goats that they traded from the elves of Ossiriand during their brief stay there that they would take Northwest.  Thus, while cows milk was almost never eaten inside Nargothrond or surrounding realms, there was a small population of goat and sheep in the nearby forests and hills. These were loosely tended to and were not considered a staple. Cheese making was an art practiced by a few talented innovators of both elven and dwarven peoples. 

Differences to Doriath: There was definitely more meat eaten by the elves of Nargothrond, less of a variety of fruits and other plants and more hardy staples. Seasonings tended to be spicier rather than herbal though there was some of both. Salt was somewhat more common and trade was more expansive.

Similarities include some similarities in vegetables

Mad Mage . Tethren the Tiefling by Hawkein

Soooo... I seem to be slowly designing all the clothing/armor of our Mad Mage characters. First Elrune, then Tethren, and now we’re onto the third!

This is Ometra Cautery, a draconic sorcerer / hexblade, half elf. Played by @rolytic over on @midgardia he already seems fun. I’m expecting him to turn out to be a real shit lord, and so far my expectations are being met, but hey! He’s helped me with mapping this dungeon so I’m not going to complain too much.

Okay fellow dnd nerds, I need help making a disabled character to play cause Im struggling with combat mechanics

So, my guy’s name is Tethren, but goes by Trip. Hes a teifling who has a muscle issue (undecided what yet) that makes it hard for him to walk and stand for long periods of time without assistance. So he uses arm crutches to help. Hes a level one sorcerer (divine soul origin) from a noble background.

My question: how would you go about including the arm crutches in combat? Should I just give them quarter staff stats? Something else? For combat, sessions, would it make more sense for him to put his crutches away and use a different weapon if he has the energy? Or should I focus on ranged combat for him instead and just hope he doesnt have to get too close to any enemies?

I just dont want to give him some magical out from his disability. I want that to be something that is fully incorporated into his character, not just a side note.

My name is Tethren Naïlo, the son of Duke Alek Naïlo and next in line to rule over the dukedom. Our family has been hailed for generations due to our service and loyalty to region.

The nobility of my country arent very fond of me, including most of my own family, due to… well, my differences. Its hard to fit in when you have red skin, horns, a tail, crutches, and magic. But thats okay, I’ve found friendship with the outcasts of society here in the dukedom. They understand what its like to be the black sheep, and I understand what its like to not be wanted or welcomed. So I use my position of power to be a voice for the voiceless and advocate for the disadvantaged.

When Im home, most of my spare time is dedicated to studying, be it law or magic. Though of course, my magic comes with a cost. The more I use it, the more my legs suffer. On good days, I dont need my crutches at all, but other times, I can barely move without them. My crutches can also be an asset though! They’ve proven to turn me into a great mountain climber when my legs are functioning!

But despite the toll taken on my body when I use my powers, Im determined to master them. Really I must if I want to protect my claim to the title. Truth be told, I dont even want to be the duke. But I cant risk letting one of my more… nefarious relatives taking over. It would be catastrophic for both our family’s name and the people of the dukedom.

How did your firbolg druid met his husband ? (I live for D&D PC-NPC romance ahah) What does he like to do as hobbies, if he has any ? Is he the kind to like being in groups/with friends all the time, or does he prefer to be on his own ?

Well, his husband who is named Milo, is a Sorcerer with a really successful magic shop in a town. When Tethren went to this town for the first time he asked Milo for directions. It was the first time in a long time someone didn’t recognize him and it was nice. He became his tour guide and Milo invited him to dinner. Tethren didn’t realize Milo was interested in him till their 3rd date when he kissed him. He just went with it.

He prefers to be in groups or with friends, but he does not mind being on his own. Definitely prefers the company of others, but he enjoys alone time to sit in nature, appreciate it, and meditate.

Flora and Fauna of the Havens of Sirion: Overview

Disclaimer: I used both what we can extrapolate is likely indigenous to the region based on descriptions of the landscape and climate as well as my own headcanons and inspirations and reference books on similar habitats as well as books like The Atlas of Middle Earth and The Flora of Middle Earth

I really love working on and researching these! and as always feel free to ask more, even if I’ve already done a place I’d always enjoy going into more detail of tacking a more specific kind of life there (birds of a location, ferns of a location, etc)

The Havens of Sirion was located in Southern Beleriand in the realm of  Arvernien at the mouth of the River Sirion where it reaches the Bay of Balar and the greater ocean. It was home to the refugees of some of the greatest atrocities of the first age including the second Kinslaying at Doriath and the sacking of Nargathrond and Gondolin.

Like with the Talath Dirnen, we do not have a great deal of information on climate. Thanks to The Atlas of Middle Earth, we do have some information on the types of habitats making up this region. However some speculation must still be used.

The lands around the Mouths of Sirion and the entrance to the bay seem to be made up of marshlands including coastal ones. The Mouths is likely at least partly an estuary.

There are a number of plants mentioned directly in the text as associated with the Havens of Sirion. Alegos, Gorse, whin, yellow iris, dense reeds, salt marsh grasses and cordgrass, seregon and stonecrops, seaweeds, and willows. This again gives us some information about what else could be found and what types of habitats make up Sirion. 

Other flowering and herbaceous plants might include Douglas Aster, a variety of species of saltbush, seaside arrowgrass, tufted hairgrass, loosestrife, sea lavender (despite the name this is not a species of lavender and is actually in the leadwort family), summer and autumn lady’s tresses, fen orchid, water primrose, tree mallow, and thrift as well as an abundance of lichens (not plants). 

There were two forested areas nearby, the Nan Tethren (valley of willows) to the North and the Birchwood of Nimbrethil to the West. Given the proximity to the bay, a possible species for the Nan Tethren is the coastal or dune willow. Likewise, as Brethil means silver birch, that this wood makes up a variety of this family is likely. 

The fauna for this section was difficult to do without just writing out overly long lists, as I said before, always feel free to ask me to go into more specific sections! It’s hard to balance being concise but also providing good information!

I’m making another post now about coastal birds but hooded cranes, species of whimbrels, curlews, godwhits and sandpipers closer to the waters as well as three-toed and green woodpecker, roller, and great tits in the more forested areas are some possibilities. 

Sand lizard, diamondback terrapin,  slow worm (a species of legless lizard), Western green lizard, stripeless tree frog, and Mediterranean tree frog are probably the reptile and amphibian species closer to the marshes and the havens themselves with gray tree frogs and common toads as well as species of salamander living in the forested areas (Nan Tethren and the Birchwood). 

The estuaries and wetlands have a wide variety of mollusks and crustaceans including species of whelk and cockle, freshwater shrimp, 

There are likely tide pools with a wide range of creatures as well as marine meadows with fish species like sand dab, pipefish, smaller rays and skates in deeper waters, blenny, sea scorpions, etc. 

There are also a large variety of fish in the brackish waters further from the coasts (sheepshead minnow, killifish, smaller mullets, etc). 

Tide pool biodiversity is extensive and I’ll possibly make another post on marine life in Beleriand especially if there’s interest. But generally, echinoderms like starfish, sand dollars, and urchins as well as bivalves and even more complex species of mollusks (cuttlefish or octopus), fiddler crabs, green crab, smaller spider crabs, sea hares, and some anemone (possibly snakelocks or Northern red) 

Gray seals, monk seals, beaked whales and pilot whales are possible marine mammals seen closer to the land. Larger otters in fresh and brackish waters are also possible.  Larger terrestrial predators are uncommon; golden jackals, crab-eating fox, polecat, and (European) wildcat are likely the largest. 

Chamois and red deer are possible in the more forested areas as are rabbits, Western hedgehogs, water voles, and pygmy shrews and a variety of bats. 

This had to be an overview as the area is large and contains several different habitats. I’m writing a piece now on sea and coastal birds of Beleriand that will go into more detail there and as always feel free to send requests.
